21 February 2020, 13:22

Pope Francis greets participants in a study visit of young priests and monks of the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and encourages them to share the gift of the Spirit as they learn more about the Catholic Church.
By Devin Watkins

Eighteen young Orthodox priests and monks are spending this week in Rome at the invitation of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.
The study visit is aimed at deepening their understanding of the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis welcomed the group to the Vatican in an audience on Friday, and took the opportunity to send a special greeting to the Heads of the Oriental Orthodox Churches.

US bishops: Pope Francis talks Fr. James Martin, euthanasia, at private meeting

Vatican City, Feb 20, 2020 / 05:00 pm (CNA).- During a private meeting with bishops from the southwestern United States, Pope Francis talked about his 2019 meeting with Fr. James Martin, SJ, and about pastoral care and assisted suicide.

The pope met Feb. 10 for more than two hours with bishops from New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

Several bishops present at the meeting told CNA that in addition to discussions about his then-pending exhortation on the Amazon region, and on the challenges of transgenderism and gender ideology, Pope Francis discussed his Sept. 30 meeting with Martin, an American Jesuit who is well-known for speaking and writing about the Church’s ministry to people who identify themselves as LGBT.

"The Holy Father's disposition was very clear, he was most displeased about the whole subject of Fr. Martin and how their encounter had been used. He was very expressive, both his words and his face -  his anger was very clear, he felt he'd been used," one bishop told CNA.

Pope: Re-aquire true meaning of law in the Church
21 February 2020, 11:04

Pope Francis receives in audience members of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, and emphasizes the pastoral nature of canon law.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis on Friday received members of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, who are meeting for their plenary session.

In his address, the Holy Father noted that the Council assists the Pope in his legislative function, helps interpret canon law, aids other dicasteries in matters of canon law, and supervises the legitimacy of the normative texts enacted by legislators to the Church.

The true meaning of law in the Church

Additionally, he said, the Council offers its help to Bishops and Episcopal Conferences “for the correct interpretation and application of the law; and more generally, in spreading knowledge of and attention to [the law]”. Pope Francis said, “It is necessary to re-aquire and deepen the true meaning of law in the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, where the Word of God and the Sacraments are pre-eminent, while the juridical norm has a necessary but subordinate role in the service of communion”. He emphasized the importance of helping people understand “the pastoral nature of canon law, its instrumentality with regard to the salus animarum [the salvation of souls], and its necessity in obedience to the virtue of justice”.

The pastoral nature of canon law

He also highlighted the pastoral nature of canon law, which is not “hindrance” to pastoral effectiveness, “but rather a guarantee of the search for solutions that are not arbitrary, but truly just, and therefore, truly pastoral”. Quoting Benedict XVI, he said “a society without law would be a society deprived of rights”, and added that today, “in this area of ‘world war fought piecemeal’, we see, as always, there is the lack of law… Dictatorships are born and grow without law. In the Church this cannot happen”.

Pope’s condolence for victims of shooting in Germany
21 February 2020, 16:23

Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin has sent a message on behalf of Pope Francis, expressing his sorrow for those killed and their families, in the shooting in Hanau.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis has expressed his pain after a gunman shot and killed nine people of foreign background in Hanau, Germany.

A 43-year-old German man shot and killed 9 people at several locations in a Frankfurt suburb overnight in attacks that, officials say, appear to have been motivated by far-right beliefs.

The gunman first attacked a hookah bar and a neighbouring cafe in central Hanau Wednesday, killing several people, before heading west and opening fire again, first on a car and then a sports bar, claiming more victims.

“Pope Francis was shocked to learn of the terrible violence in Hanau which has led to the death of innocent people,” wrote Cardinal Parolin in a telegram to Bishop Michael Gerber of Fulda, under whose jurisdiction comes Hanau.

He said the Holy Father shares in the grief of the bereaved, expresses his closeness to them in their pain, and entrusts the dead to the mercy of God in prayer.  The Holy Father, Cardinal Parolin wrote, implores Christ, the Lord of life, so that all those mourning their dead may find consolation and trust, and be accompanied by the blessing and peace of God.

Pius XII faces moment of truth as opening of Vatican archives nears
Elise Ann Allen  Feb 19, 2020

ROME - For years controversy surrounding the figure of Pope Pius XII has been a sore point for the Holy See, but  Vatican will be seeking to set the record straight when the Vatican archives opens its doors to researchers who will scrutinize all documentation related World War II-era pope.

The documents, texts and letters relating to Pius XII’s pontificate, up to his death, will be made available March 2, the 80th anniversary of Eugenio Pacelli’s election to the papacy.

When announcing his decision to open the archives a year ago, in March 2019, Pope Francis declared that “the Church is not afraid of history but, rather, she loves it, and would like to love it more and better, as God loves it!”

At the time, Francis voiced his confidence that “serious and objective historical research will succeed in evaluating in its proper light, with appropriate criticism, the praiseworthy moments of that Pontiff and, no doubt also the moments of grave difficulty, of anguished decisions, of human and Christian prudence.”

Though appearing “reticent” to some, Francis insisted that Pius XII’s actions were “human and hard-fought attempts to keep alive, in periods of intense darkness and cruelty, the flame of humanitarian initiatives, of hidden but active diplomacy, of hope in the possible favorable opening of hearts.”

Update:  Cardinal Pell

https://cruxnow.com/church-in-oceania/2020/02/australian-high-court-releases-submissions-for-cardinal-pells-appeal/

Australian High Court releases submissions for Cardinal Pell’s appeal
Catholic News Service  Feb 24, 2020

CANBERRA, Australia - Australia’s High Court has released the full set of submissions for Cardinal George Pell’s March 11 and 12 final appeal hearing against historic child sexual abuse crimes.

The first appeal by Pell - who continues to claim he is innocent - was dismissed 2-1 by a panel of judges of the Victorian Supreme Court in August. The documents released in late February show that the High Court requested submissions from Pell’s counsel about the fact that the three judges of the Victorian court decided to view the original video testimony from Pell’s only living victim as they considered his appeal.

On March 11, the High Court’s full bench will first decide, based on written submissions and oral pleadings, whether to grant Pell’s special leave to appeal to the court. If leave is not granted, the cardinal will return to prison and serve out his term - at least 32 more months.

If leave is granted, the justices would immediately proceed to hear the appeal. This likely would include questioning lawyers from both sides, and an extra day has been set aside for this eventuality. The court would then return after some months, with a decision to either uphold Pell’s conviction or set him free.

Any Vatican decision or canon law inquiries would begin once the High Court has made its decision.

Pope at Mass: Service, not titles, is the measure of greatness in the Church
25 February 2020, 11:39

Pope Francis warns against passions and against envy and gossip, in his homily at the daily Mass at Casa Santa Marta. Worldliness, he says, is the enemy of God, because the Lord calls us to humility.
By Vatican News

In his homily at the daily Mass at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis reflected on the day’s Gospel, in which Jesus tells the disciples, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all". If we make compromises while trying to live out the Gospel, he said, we will end up imbibing the spirit of the world, which leads to dominating others and is the “enemy of God”. On the contrary, Jesus calls us to the path of service.

Jesus knew that the disciples, because of ambition, had been arguing about which one of them was the greatest. Pope Francis explained that this attitude of wanting to advance, of wanting to be raised up is “the spirit of the world”. Going back to the first reading, he noted that St James says that “to be a lover of the world means enmity with God”. The Pope continued:

This anxiety of worldliness, this concern to be more important than others, saying, “No! I deserve this, that person doesn’t deserve it”: this is worldliness, this is the spirit of the world, and those who breathe in this spirit, breathe in the enmity of God. Jesus, in another passage, says to the disciples, “Either you are with me or you are against me”. There are no compromises in the Gospel. And when someone wants to live the Gospel while making compromises, they ultimately find themselves with the worldly spirit, which always seeks to make compromises in order to climb higher, to dominate, to be greater.

Pope at Audience: ‘disconnect from TV, smart phones and connect to the Gospel in Lent’
26 February 2020, 12:43

Pope Francis holds the General Audience in St. Peter’s Square on Ash Wednesday, reflecting on how the coming forty days are a good time to make room for the Word of God in our lives.
By Linda Bordoni

“Lent,” Pope Francis said to some 12,000 pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square,  “is a time in which to turn off the television and open the Bible.”

During his catechesis for the weekly General Audience the Pope reflected on the 40 days spent by Jesus in the desert as He prepared for His public ministry and said that, in a sense, it is a time for us to imitate Jesus and seek a place of silence, where we are free to hear the Lord’s word and experience His call.

“In the desert one hears the Word of God,” he said, “one finds intimacy with God and the love of the Lord,” noting that Jesus taught us how to seek the Father, who speaks to us in silence.

The pollution of verbal violence
He remarked on the fact that, for many of us, it is not easy to be in silence as we live in an environment that is “polluted by too much verbal violence," by so many "offensive and harmful words" which are amplified by the internet.  “Lent is a time to disconnect from cell phones and connect to the Gospel,” he said, recalling that when he was a child there was no television, but his family would make a point of not listening to the radio.

Pope at Ash Wednesday Mass: We are dust loved by God
26 February 2020, 17:07

Pope Francis celebrates Mass on Ash Wednesday in the Basilica of Santa Sabina, and reminds us that we are dust that can become much more if we allow ourselves to be shaped by God.
By Devin Watkins

Following an ancient Ash Wednesday tradition, Pope Francis began the “stational” liturgy at the church of Sant’Anselmo before leading a penitential procession to the Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill where he celebrated Mass.

In his homily, the Pope reflected on ashes imposed on the foreheads of the faithful at the start of Lent.

Dust loved by God

“We are dust in the universe,” he said. “Yet we are dust loved by God.”

The Holy Father added that we are precious dust that is destined for eternal life.

“We are the dust of the earth, upon which God has poured out his heaven, the dust that contains his dreams,” he said. “We are God’s hope, his treasure and his glory.”

Pope praises Brazil’s Lenten solidarity campaign
26 February 2020, 12:08

Pope Francis sends a message to the people of Brazil at the start of the local Church’s Lenten “Solidarity Campaign”, and encourages Catholics to combine conversion with service to those most in need.
By Devin Watkins

For more than 5 decades, the Catholic Church in Brazil has carried out its Solidarity Campaign to raise awareness of the concrete problems facing Brazilian society.
The campaign culminates in a collection at Mass on Palm Sunday, whose funds go toward supporting social projects run by local dioceses.

Conversion and service

In a message sent on Ash Wednesday, Pope Francis praised the Lenten initiative, saying it shows that conversion cannot be separated from service to our brothers and sisters, especially those most in need.

“This year,” he said, “the campaign’s theme deals precisely with the value of life and our responsibility to care for it in all its stages, because life is a gift and a commitment. It is a loving gift from God, which we must continually care for.”

Pope to priests: Turn bitterness into fresh water for the people
27 February 2020, 14:22

To mark the beginning of Lent, a traditional penitential liturgy was held for clergy of the Diocese of Rome on Thursday. The ceremony took place in the Archbasilica of St John Lateran, the cathedral of the Diocese.
By Vatican News

After a meditation by the Cardinal Vicar of Rome, Angelo De Donatis, the priests of the diocese had the opportunity to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation during a penitential liturgy at St John Lateran. Normally, Pope Francis, as the Bishop of Rome, is present for the event, and personally hears the confessions of several priests. This year, however, due to a “slight indisposition”, the Pope “preferred to remain in the vicinity of Santa Marta”, according to a statement from the Director of the Holy See Press Office. The Holy Father’s prepared remarks were read out to the Roman clergy by Cardinal De Donatis.

In his address, Pope Francis reflects on the “bitterness” some priests experience, while expressing the hope that it might “show us [clergy] the way to greater adoration of the Father, and help us to experience anew the power of His merciful anointing”.

Vatican City implements health measures over coronavirus
By Courtney Grogan

Vatican City, Feb 27, 2020 / 03:00 pm (CNA).- The Vatican has implemented special health measures and canceled some events as more than 500 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Italy.

Hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed in Vatican City offices, and there is a nurse and a doctor on call at a Vatican clinic to give immediate assistance, Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni told Vatican News.

While there have been no diagnosed cases of the coronavirus in Vatican City, Bruni said Feb. 24 that Vatican health staff have worked with the Italian Ministry of Health on procedures which can be brought into action, and are in close contact with the regional authorities in Lazio.

“In compliance with the provisions of the Italian authorities, some events scheduled for the next few days in indoor places and with an important influx of public have been postponed," Bruni said.

With Pope Francis’ Lenten retreat scheduled for March 1-6, there are no papal audiences scheduled for next week, but conferences in Rome and other indoor events have been canceled.

Pope: Church’s social teaching can help AI serve the common good
28 February 2020, 14:41

Pope Francis sent a message to participants in a workshop titled, "The 'Good' Algorithm? Artificial Intelligence: Ethics, Law, Health", organized by the Pontifical Academy for Life in the Vatican, February, 26-28.
By Robin Gomes

In the newly emerging discipline of “the ethical development of algorithms” or more simply “algor-ethics”, a critical contribution can be made by the principles of the Church’s social teaching, namely the dignity of the person, justice, subsidiarity and solidarity.

The Pope made the remark on Friday in a message that was read to participants in a workshop titled, "The 'Good' Algorithm? Artificial Intelligence: Ethics, Law, Health", organized by the Pontifical Academy for Life in the Vatican, February, 26-28.

The Holy Father was scheduled to address the group but because of a “slight indisposition”, he postponed all of Friday’s official audiences outside Casa Santa Marta, where he resides.
