Pope postpones official audiences but continues meetings at Santa Marta
28 February 2020, 10:45

The schedule of Pope Francis has been modified for the second day, Friday, the Vatican Press Office said.
Vatican News

“The Holy Father celebrated Mass this morning and at the end, as usual, greeted the participants, but decided to postpone today's official audiences,” the Director of the Holy See Press office, Matteo Bruni, said on Friday.  “The meetings on the agenda at Casa Santa Marta continue regularly ", he told journalists.

The previous day, Thursday, Pope Francis had skipped a scheduled penitential service with the clergy of Rome at Saint John Lateran, letting his speech be read by the Vicar of Rome Diocese, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis.  Bruni explained to journalists that because of “a slight indisposition” the Pope "preferred to stay inside Santa Marta,” where the pontiff lives.  “All other commitments will go ahead regularly,” he said.

Pope Francis forms Child Protection Task Force
28 February 2020, 12:30

Following up on a plan announced at last year’s Meeting for the Protection of Minors in the Church, Pope Francis has launched a task force to help Bishops’ Conferences prepare and update child protection guidelines.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis has established a task force “in order to assist the Episcopal Conferences in the preparation and updating of guidelines for the protection of minors”. The intention to form such a group had already been announced by the Pope at last year’s Meeting for the Protection of Minors in the Church, which ran from 21-24 February 2019. One year later, after the details of the project had been worked out, Pope Francis has made the plan a reality.

Supervising committee

In a statement released on Friday, the Holy See Press Office explained that the task force will be supervised by Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the Substitute for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State, together with the  members of the organizing Committee for last year’s Meeting: Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay; Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago; Archbishop Charles Scicluna, Archbishop of Malta and Deputy Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; and Father Hans Zollner, SJ, Dean of the Institute of Psychology of the Pontifical Gregorian University and member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.

Pope cancels audiences for third day with apparent cold
Associated Press  Feb 29, 2020

ROME - Pope Francis canceled official engagements for the third day in a row Saturday as he battled an apparent cold.

The 83-year-old pope, who lost part of a lung to a respiratory illness as a young man, has never canceled so many official audiences or events in his seven-year papacy.

Francis is, however, continuing to work from his residence at the Vatican’s Santa Marta hotel and is receiving people in private, the Vatican press office said. On Saturday, those private meetings were with the head of the Vatican’s bishops’ office, Francis’ ambassadors to Lebanon and France and a Ukrainian archbishop.

Canceled were his two planned official audiences - formal affairs in the Apostolic Palace where Francis would have delivered a speech and greeted a great number of people at the end. Those were to include an audience with an international bioethics organization and with members of the scandal-marred Legion of Christ religious order.

On Sunday, Francis is expected to leave the Vatican with top Holy See bureaucrats for a week of spiritual exercises in the Roman countryside, an annual retreat that the pope attends at the start of each Lent.

Pope urges Regnum Christi to continue along path of renewal
29 February 2020, 14:22

Pope Francis invites the Legionaries of Christ and Regnum Christi members to continue along the path of discernment to reform the Federation, in remarks prepared for an audience on Saturday.
By Devin Watkins

The Legionaries of Christ recently held their General Chapter in Rome, as the wider Regnum Christi Federation held its General Assemblies.

Pope Francis was scheduled to address the group on Saturday, but had to cancel due to a “slight indisposition”. The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, said the Pope did celebrate Mass and keep his scheduled appointments in the Casa Santa Marta on Saturday morning.

Difficult past

In his prepared remarks which were read out to the group, Pope Francis said the “criminal behavior” of Father Marcial Maciel Degollado generated “a major institutional and personal crisis” within the Regnum Christi Federation.

Vatican urges subsidiarity and solidarity in care for persons with rare diseases
29 February 2020, 14:17

The last day of February is observed as Rare Disease Day. It is estimated that over 300 million people in the world suffer from over 6,000 identified rare diseases.
By Robin Gomes

The Vatican is urging the international community to implement the Catholic social principles of subsidiarity and solidarity in healthcare policies in order to provide specific support and care for patients with rare diseases and their families, and make them feel part of society.

Cardinal Peter Turkson, the Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, made the call on Saturday  in a message for Rare Disease Day, that is observed on the last day of February.

European Organisation for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS), a non-governmental organization, established the annual observance in 2008 to raise awareness for unknown or overlooked illnesses.

According to the NGO, there are over 300 million people in the world suffering from over 6,000 identified rare diseases.

Pope Francis

Pope Francis also called for support for persons with rare diseases.  In a post on his @Pontifex Twitter account on Saturday, he wrote: “#RareDiseaseDay offers us the opportunity to together care for our brothers and sisters who are ill, to integrate research, medical care, and social assistance so that they might enjoy equal opportunities and lead a full life.”

Pope at Angelus: 'never engage in dialogue with the devil’
01 March 2020, 12:20

Pope Francis addresses the faithful on this first Sunday of Lent reflecting on how temptation is an attempt to walk alternative paths than those of God.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis on Sunday urged Christians to be alert and vigilant when “messages, coming at us from many places” invite us to be tempted and to experience “the intoxication of transgression.”

Speaking to the pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Angelus, the Pope reflected on the Gospel for the first Sunday of Lent that tells of how Jesus, after having been baptized in the River Jordan, was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

He recalled that Jesus prepared himself for his mission of proclaiming the Kingdom of Heaven by fasting for forty days.

“At the end of this period of fasting, the tempter, the devil, breaks in and tries three times to put Jesus to the test,” he said.

Pope to follow Spiritual Exercises from the Vatican
01 March 2020, 13:52

Pope Francis says a cold is keeping him indoors; therefore he will follow the annual Spiritual Exercises from the Vatican.
By Linda Bordoni

Asking the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square to remember the Spiritual Exercises of the Roman Curia in their prayers, Pope Francis revealed that a cold will be keeping him indoors, therefore, he will not be going to Ariccia for the annual retreat.

The Pope had been scheduled to travel to the town in the Alban Hills outside Rome this afternoon to participate in a week-long cycle of meditations.

“I will be following from here,” he said, adding that although he will not physically participate in the retreat, he will spiritually join the Curia and all those who are experiencing moments of prayer.

Archbishop Gallagher: Vatican archives will show greatness of Pius XII
01 March 2020, 08:30

The Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, says the opening of the Vatican Archives between the years 1939 and 1958 will show the great works of Pope Pius XII, as well as his efforts to communicate with the Soviet Union.
By Vatican News

On 2 March, the Vatican Apostolic Library opens the Holy See’s archives on the pontificate of Pope Pius XII.

Scholars and researchers can dig into a wealth of material that spans the years 1939 to 1958, including dispatches sent during World War II.

Ahead of the opening, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States, sat down with Andrea Tornielli, the Editorial Director of the Dicastery for Communication.

While highlighting the importance of the historical archive of the Secretary of State, Archbishop Gallagher shares his special insight into the part of the archive relating to the Section for Relations with States, which he says, “is important, above all, because of the insights in terms of historical continuity that if offers.”

He explains this particular archive has its origins in 1814 and it brings together the various archives of Councils and offices that eventually became the Section for Relations with States as it is today, with a continuity of documents that go back from the beginning of the 19th century, to the present day.
Unique insight
Gallagher notes that normally, these archives would be open up until 1939 - to the death of Pope Pius XI – but says that Pope Francis decided to open them up as quickly as possible, effectively making them accessible until the end of the pontificate of Pope Pius XII in 1958.

Vatican opens archives on Pope Pius XII
02 March 2020, 15:41

The Holy See opens its archives on the pontificate of Pius XII, offering researchers the opportunity to shed light on a dark period in world history.
By Benedict Mayaki

From Monday, 2 March 2020, the Vatican Apostolic Archives, alongside several other archives of the Holy See on the pontificate of Pius XII (1939 – 1958), have been opened to consultation by scholars.

First announced by Pope Francis on 4 March 2019, the opening is the result of more than fourteen years of preparation by the Historical Archives relating to the Vatican's Section for Relations with States.

The vast quantity of material available for consultation includes about 120 Series and Archives from the Secretariat of State, Roman Congregations, and Curia offices, which make up about 20,000 archival units.

A large portion of these resources is available in digital form according to a statement released on Monday by the Vatican Apostolic Archives.

Opening up the archives

Only a Pope can grant access to the documents of his predecessors.

In 1881, Leo XII opened the Vatican Archives for the period up to 1815. In 1921, Benedict XV extended it till 1830.

In more recent times, Pope Benedict XVI made the documents of the pontificate of Pius XI accessible.

The goal of opening up the archives on Pius XII is to give scholars the possibility of accessing sources that were unavailable up until now.

Papal retreat: Moses, an example of intimate friendship with God
02 March 2020, 12:14

Pope Francis sends a letter to the retreat director for the Roman Curia’s Spiritual Exercises, as Fr Pietro Bovati launches into his reflections on Moses, who enjoyed intimate friendship with God.
By Devin Watkins

Even though he is following the Spiritual Exercises from the Casa Santa Marta due to a cold, Pope Francis kicked off the annual retreat in Ariccia with a letter sent to Jesuit Fr Pietro Bovati.

In it, the Pope extended his prayer and blessings to the retreat director and the Roman Curia.

“I am accompanying you from here,” he wrote. “I will do the Exercises in my room, following Fr Bovati’s preaching, to whom I extend my gratitude. I pray for you. Please, pray for me.”

New date for “Economy of Francis” set for November
02 March 2020, 10:52

A new date for the Economy of Francis, in Assisi, is set for 21 November 2020.
By Francesca Merlo

The organising committee of the Economy of Francis has announced that the event, previously set for 26-28 March, will now be taking place on the 21 November in Assisi.

The change in date comes because of the difficulties many people are facing in travelling, both on an international and national level due to the Coronavirus outbreak. The Holy Father, therefore, in agreement with the committee, has set the new date of his meeting to accomodate the 2000 young people from 115 countries who are due to attend the event.

Pope Francis accepts resignation of Buffalo’s Bishop Edward Grosz
By Courtney Mares

Vatican City, Mar 2, 2020 / 06:15 am (CNA).- Pope Francis Monday accepted the resignation of Bishop Edward Grosz, the auxiliary bishop of Buffalo, who has been accused of mishandling a sex abuse allegation.

Grosz, who turned 75 on February 16, offered his resignation at the age required by canon law. The Vatican’s March 2 announcement accepting Grosz’s resignation did not indicate whether it will conduct any investigation into the allegation against the bishop.

His retirement comes following a year of allegations of a cover-up of clergy sex abuse made against the leadership of the Diocese of Buffalo, including an allegation of negligence on the part of Grosz himself.

The Diocese of Buffalo announced on Feb. 28 that it is declaring bankruptcy as hundreds of abuse lawsuits have been filed against it in the last several months. Following the opening of a window in the state statute of limitation last summer, hundreds of abuse lawsuits filed against the diocese in New York courts.

Earlier in February, Scharfenberger announced the decision to close Buffalo’s Christ the King Seminary. The seminary was reportedly facing an annual $500,000 average deficit over a period of a decade.

The diocese said it was formally filing for Chapter 11 reorganization under the U.S. bankruptcy code to provide the most compensation for victims of clergy sex abuse while continuing the day-to-day work of its Catholic mission.

Nicaragua's Father Ernesto Cardenal dies at 95

Managua, Nicaragua, Mar 2, 2020 / 05:06 pm (CNA).- Fr. Ernesto Cardenal, a Nicaraguan poet and Marxist liberation theology activist whose priestly faculties were long suspended for his assuming a public office, died Sunday at the age of 95.

Fr. Cardenal died March 1 after a brief hospitalization.

St. John Paul II publicly reprimanded Fr. Cardenal when he visited Nicaragua in 1983.

The priest continued to serve as Nicaragua's culture minister until 1987, and he later distanced himself from the FSLN.

He was absolved of all canonical censures one year ago. The Nicaraguan apostolic nunciature announced Feb. 18, 2019 that Pope Francis had accepted the request recently made by Fr. Cardenal “to be readmitted to the exercise of the priestly ministry.”

Pope Francis has a 'common cold,' Vatican says, amid Italy's coronavirus outbreak
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Mar 3, 2020 / 04:10 am (CNA).- Pope Francis was reportedly tested for the novel coronavirus, Covid-19, with negative results, an Italian newspaper said Tuesday.

Last week, the pope began to show symptoms of a cold. “His doctors immediately intervened to check the case. Of course, he was also swabbed to see if it was coronavirus but fortunately the outcome was negative,” Vatican journalist Franca Giansoldati reported in Il Messaggero March 3.

The Holy See issued a statement Tuesday evening indicating that Pope Francis has a “common cold,” and that he does not have “symptoms caused by other diseases.”

“Pope Francis celebrated daily Mass and follows the spiritual exercises that are taking place at the Casa Divin Maestro in Ariccia,” the Holy See’s press office added.

Papal retreat: God’s vocational call comes as a surprise
03 March 2020, 12:56

The retreat director of Pope Francis’ annual Spiritual Exercises reflects on how God calls Moses to lead His people, and warns against the temptation to resist God’s will.
By Devin Watkins

As the Pope continues to follow the Roman Curia’s Spiritual Exercises from the Casa Santa Marta due to a cold, Fr Pietro Bovati picked up the themes of vocation and our resistance to the grace of God.

Day 2 afternoon: Vocation as a turning point

In his Monday afternoon reflection, the Secretary of the Pontifical Biblical Commission told members of the Roman Curia gathered at the Divine Master House in Ariccia that God calls each of us individually.

Vocation, said Fr Bovati, “is a decisive encounter in which God speaks to us”. Since it marks a turning point in our lives, he said, we should frequently return to that moment of “rebirth” to recall the voice of the Lord.

Fr Bovati focused his reflections on readings from Ex 3:1-12; Mt 16:13-23; and Psalm 63.

ITC studies relationship between faith and sacraments
03 March 2020, 12:00

A new document produced by the International Theological Commission (ITC) reflects on the relationship between the Catholic faith and the sacraments, especially the sacraments of initiation and the sacrament of Matrimony.
By Christopher Wells

The International Theological Commission (ITC) has issued a new document studying the relationship between faith and the sacraments.
The sacramental nature of the faith

Entitled “The Reciprocity between Faith and Sacraments in the Sacramental Economy”, the new document aims at contributing to a deeper understanding of the sacramental nature of the faith, and to a revitalization of sacramental ministry. Specifically, it speaks to the problem of so-called “baptized non-believers” – those who have received the sacrament of Baptism, but who do not possess the faith in a meaningful sense.

The ITC seeks to address this issue by providing a doctrinal reflection on the significance of the faith for the sacraments, as well as proposing practical pastoral indications for those in ministry.

The new document is divided into five chapters. The first chapter elaborates the problem, and explains the decision to focus on the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist), and the sacrament of Matrimony.

“The Reciprocity between Faith and Sacraments in the Sacramental Economy” was authorized for publication by the President of the International Theological Commission, the Prefect for the Congregation for the Faith, Cardinal Luis Ladaria Ferrer, SJ, after having received the favourable opinion of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis invites the Church to celebrate Laudato Si’ Week
03 March 2020, 12:00

Pope Francis in a video message invites Catholic communities around the world to celebrate Laudato Si’ Week from 16 to 24 May 2020.
By Vatican News

In view of the 5th anniversary of the publication of the Encyclical Laudato si', Pope Francis recorded a video message. In it, he addresses Catholic communities around the world.

“What kind of world do we want to leave to those who will come after us, to children who are growing up?" Pope Francis asks in the video message.

“Motivated by this question”, he says, “I would like to invite you to participate in Laudato Si' Week from 16-24 May 2020. It is a global campaign on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the encyclical letter Laudato si': On the care of our common home.”

The Pope also renews his urgent call to respond to the ecological crisis: “The cry of the earth and the cry of the poor cannot continue”, he says.

“Let's take care of creation, a gift of our good Creator God. Let's celebrate Laudato Si' Week together.”

Vatican sends abuse experts to Mexico to help church in safeguarding

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — After receiving a request from Mexico’s bishops for assistance in handling cases of the abuse of minors, the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is sending its top abuse investigator to Mexico.

Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna of Malta, adjunct secretary of the doctrinal congregation, will be accompanied by Spanish Father Jordi Bertomeu Farnos, a congregation official, on a visit to Mexico City March 20-27 to help church leaders with safeguarding and to listen to victims.

Pope Francis had sent Archbishop Scicluna and Father Bertomeu to Chile in 2018 to listen to survivors and investigate charges of abuse and its subsequent cover-up. Their report and supporting documentation — totaling more than 2,300 pages — helped correct the pope’s belief that abuse accusations were exaggerated; after a later meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, every bishop in Chile offered his resignation.

German bishops elect new conference chairman

Mainz, Germany, Mar 3, 2020 / 10:30 am (CNA).- The German bishops’ conference has elected Bishop Georg Bätzing of Limburg as its new chairman. Bätzing replaces the outgoing chairman, Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Münich and Freising, and will lead the conference for a six year term.

The election of Bishop Bätzing was confirmed Tuesday, following a vote by the German bishops at their spring assembly, which is currently underway in Mainz. CNA Duetsch reported March 3 that, after no candidate received the necessary two-thirds majority during the first two rounds of voting, Bätzing was elected on the third ballot with a simple majority of votes cast.

The bishop used his first press appearance as chairman to reaffirm the conference’s support for the ongoing “synodal way” being conducted in partnership with the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK).

"At the center of our considerations is the 'Synodal Way.' I fully support that," Bätzing said Tuesday.

The so-called binding synodal process formally opened during the first week of Advent, 2019, but the first meeting of the synodal assembly was convened in January. The assembly’s working groups will offer proposed changes to various aspects of Church teaching and discipline, including on women’s ordination, clerical celibacy, and human sexuality.
