Pope at Mass: “We are before a mystery”
25 March 2020, 08:27

Reflecting during the homily on Wednesday morning during the liturgy for the Solemnity of the Annunciation, Pope Francis repeats the Gospel for his homily, passage, he says that the Madonna herself would have recounted. (Playback of liturgy included)
By Vatican News

Pope Francis celebrated the liturgy for the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord on Wednesday morning at the Casa Santa Marta chapel. He began the liturgy announcing that the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, present at the liturgy, would renew their vows together with all their fellow sisters throughout the world. These sisters direct the Santa Marta dispensary. There, the sisters provide medical assistance to children and families in need. It is located just a stone’s throw away from the Pope’s residence inside the Vatican.

“I would like to offer the Mass today, for them, for their congregation, who has always cared for the sick and the poorest, as they have done here for 98 years”.

This prayer intention also extended to “all women religious who are working at this moment, caring for the sick and also risking their lives and giving their lives”.

We are before a mystery

After the proclamation of the Annunciation from the Gospel of Luke, Pope Francis began his homily. He said Luke would have known what had happened “only because the Madonna had told him”.

Pope at Audience: we are called to live the fullness of life
25 March 2020, 12:54

Pope Francis marks the 25th anniversary of Saint John Paul II’s Encyclical, Evangelium vitae, confirming that the fight to preserve human life and dignity is more important than ever.
By Francesca Merlo

March 25 marks both the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord and the 25th anniversary of Evangelium vitae. Pope Saint John Paul II’s Encyclical, also known as the ‘Gospel of Life’, is dedicated to the value and inviolability of human life.

The Gospel of Life

During his catechesis at the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis stressed the connection between the Annunciation and the “Gospel of Life”. Today, we must explain this “in the context of a pandemic that threatens human life”, making the Encyclical’s opening words “feel even more challenging”, he said. The opening words read as follows:

The Gospel of Life is at the heart of Jesus' message. Lovingly received day after day by the Church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as "good news" to the people of every age and culture.

As in every other Gospel proclamation, this must be ‘witnessed’, first of all, said the Pope. The Pope expressed his gratitude to all those who are “putting into practice the Gospel of Life” as they bear witness doing their best to help the sick, the elderly, the lonely and the destitute, he said.

Vatican updates guidelines for Holy Week liturgies during coronavirus
By Courtney Mares

Vatican City, Mar 25, 2020 / 12:01 pm (CNA).- After dioceses throughout the world suspended public Masses amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Congregation for Divine Worship has updated its decree on Holy Week liturgies.

The Congregation for Eastern Churches issued a similar decree.

“Given that the date of Easter cannot be transferred, in the countries which have been struck by the disease and where restrictions around the assembly and movement of people have been imposed, Bishops and priests may celebrate the rites of Holy Week without the presence of the people and in a suitable place, avoiding concelebration and omitting the sign of peace,” states the updated decree issued by the Congregation for Divine Worship March 25.

The document recommends that parishes and dioceses inform Catholics of times of Easter Sunday Mass and other Holy Week liturgies, so that “they can prayerfully unite themselves in their homes” via live broadcast or streaming, if possible.

Miraculous crucifix moved to St. Peter’s Square for Pope Francis' ‘Urbi et Orbi’ blessing

Vatican City, Mar 25, 2020 / 03:10 pm (CNA).- The miraculous crucifix at which Pope Francis prayed Sunday for an end to the coronavirus has been taken down from its altar and transported to St. Peter's Square, so it can be present on Friday during the pontiff's benediction "Urbi et Orbi."

The crucifix was removed from the Church of San Marcello al Corso by Vatican personnel Wednesday evening, and is expected to be installed temporarily at St. Peter’s Square on Thursday, according to Vatican journalist Francesco Antonio Grana.

The crucifix was venerated as miraculous by Romans after it was the only religious image to survive unscathed from a fire that completely gutted the church on May 23, 1519.
Less than three years later, Rome was devastated by the "black plague."

Upon the request of Rome’s Catholics, the crucifix was taken in procession from the convent of the Servants of Mary in Via del Corso to St. Peter’s Square, stopping in each quarter of Rome.

The procession continued 16 days, from August 4th to the 20th, 1522. When the crucifix was returned to St. Marcellus, the plague had disappeared from Rome.

At Fatima, 24 countries consecrated to Jesus and Mary amid the coronavirus pandemic

CNA Staff, Mar 25, 2020 / 05:25 pm (CNA).- Twenty-four countries on Wednesday were consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Fatima, Portugal.

In a March 25 ceremony that included the recitation of the rosary and a litany asking the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray for the afflicted, Fatima’s bishop, Cardinal Antonio Marto, renewed the consecration of Portugal and Spain to Jesus and Mary, and added the names of twenty-four other countries.

In response to the global coronavirus pandemic, the Portuguese bishops’ conference announced last week they would reconsecrate Portugal to Christ and Mary on the evening of March 25. Shortly after the announcement, the Spanish bishops’ conference requested that their country also be consecrated in the same liturgy.

The Portuguese bishops subsequently invited the heads of other national bishops’ conferences to request that their nations be added as well.

In addition to Spain and Portugal, the other 22 countries consecrated at the request of their respective episcopal conferences are: Albania, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Slovakia, Guatemala, Hungary, India, Mexico, Moldova, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Kenya, the Dominican Republic, Romania, Tanzania, East Timor and Zimbabwe.

In a statement, the bishops’ conference of Portugal noted that on 36 years ago, on March 25, 1984, Pope St. John Paul II consecrated the entire world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Coronavirus Latest From Rome
Latest updates from the Eternal City in lockdown since March 10.
Edward Pentin
UPDATES (Rome time)

March 26, 1.10pm

Despite concerns about Pope Francis’ proximity to people who might be infected with the coronavirus, he has continued with meetings today, receiving four more people in private audience at his Santa Marta residence.

They were two prelates: Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, and Archbishop Giacomo Morandi, Secretary at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

He also met two laymen: Ambassador Juan Bosco Cayota Zappettini of Uruguay who made a farewell visit, and Professor Marco Impagliazza, president of the Sant’Egidio lay community.

Yesterday, it was reported that a Vatican official living in the Santa Marta residence was hospitalised after contracting the virus.

The Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano reported today that the Pope was tested negative for the virus after news of the official's infection.

Four other people in the Vatican have also been tested positive for the virus this month.

The Pope has so far decided to stay in Santa Marta rather than be fully quarantined or moved to a separate location.

Pope at Mass: “May the Lord help us conquer our fear”
26 March 2020, 09:34

Pope Francis expresses his concern for all of us who are coping with various fears and prays for them during Mass at the Casa Santa Marta chapel on Thursday morning.
By Sr Bernadette M. Reis, fsp

“In these days there's so much suffering. There's a lot of fear.” Pope Francis’ thus began the Sacred Liturgy which he offered in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta on Thursday morning. Then he went on:

“The fear of the elderly who are alone in nursing homes, or hospitals, or in their own homes, and don't know what will happen. The fear of those who don’t have regular jobs and are thinking about how to feed their children. They foresee they may go hungry. The fear of many civil servants. At this moment they're working to keep society functioning and they might get sick. There’s also the fear, the fears, of each one of us. Each one knows what their own fears are. We pray to the Lord that He might help us to trust, and to tolerate and conquer these fears.”

During his homily, he reflected on how idolatry affects all of our lives. He based his thoughts on the first reading from Exodus 32:7-14.

Pope makes special request for prayers for the sick
26 March 2020, 11:24

Pope Francis releases a special video message, in which he asks for prayers for the sick and the suffering, while thanking all those who pray for those affected.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis is making a special call for prayers for all the sick and suffering, in the context of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The call comes in a video-message published by “The Pope Video”, an initiative of the “Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network”.

In his message, the Holy Father invokes the Blessed Virgin Mary with the ancient prayer Sub tuum praesidium:

“We fly to thy protection, O Holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.”

Pope Francis also takes the opportunity in his message to thank all Christians, and all men and women of good will – whichever religious tradition they belong to, who are praying in unison in this moment.

Vatican official living in Santa Marta tests positive for coronavirus
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Mar 26, 2020 / 09:31 am (CNA).- A Vatican official who is a resident of the guesthouse where Pope Francis lives has tested positive for coronavirus, according to reports.

The Catholic Herald wrote March 26 that Fr. Gianluca Pezzoli, an official in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, is sick with COVID-19, his diocese confirmed.

According to a report by the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero Wednesday, the 58-year-old priest has been hospitalized.

The Diocese of Mantua, where Pezzoli is incardinated, did not give information on the priest’s current location or condition, according to The Catholic Herald.

On the diocese’s website, Pezzoli’s residence and contact is listed as the Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City.

Il Messaggero also reported March 25 that Pope Francis was not likely to have come into contact with Pezzoli recently; right now the pope moves mostly between his room and the chapel, where he offers Mass every morning with his three priest secretaries and at least one religious sister.

During this time, he is also eating his lunch alone in his room, not in the guesthouse’s dining room, according to Il Messaggero.

Francis’ schedule has lessened, though he continues to have some meetings in the apostolic palace, from where, during the coronavirus pandemic, he is also livestreaming his weekly Wednesday general audience and Sunday Angelus.

Covid-19: Christians, Jews and Muslims join in prayer in Jerusalem
26 March 2020, 14:57

The Franciscan Custodian of the Holy Land reflects on the significance of a common prayer raised to the Lord by believers of the three Abrahamic religions in the sacred city of Jerusalem.
By Linda Bordoni

The leaders of the three Abrahamic religions – Christians, Jews and Muslims – prayed together in Jerusalem on Thursday amid the global Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic.

The initiative, taken by the Mayor of the Holy City, took place at 12.30 pm local time at Jerusalem City Hall and saw the presence of representatives of other faiths as well, including Druze and Bahai.

Speaking to Vatican Radio before the common prayer, the Franciscan Custodian of the Holy Land, Father Francesco Patton, highlighted the significance of this moment and explained that every religion was to recite a prayer according to its own tradition.

“We will be together to pray to the Almighty God that this pandemic may stop,” Fr. Patton said explaining the initiative has a deep spiritual significance.

“It is important in itself because we are all believers with the same roots; and thanks to this same root we can express with faith and with confidence our prayer to God the Almighty,” he said.

The common prayer comes on the heels of a joint communiqué, issued on 21 March, in which the leaders of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (Latin, Greek Orthodox and Armenian) expressed their hope that "in this dangerous situation all the children of Abraham could pray together to the Almighty to ask for protection and mercy".

Pope at Mass: Thank you to those who pray for people in difficulty
27 March 2020, 10:25

In his Mass at Casa Santa Marta on Friday, Pope Francis expresses his gratitude for those who are concerned for the sick, the elderly, and families that don’t have the means to get by.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis began his homily on Friday morning by noting that the difficult times we are facing have inspired in many people a more general concern for others: for families that don’t have enough to get by, for the elderly who are alone, for the sick in hospitals. They are praying for others, “that help might somehow arrive”.

“This is a good sign”, the Pope said, “and we thank the Lord, who is arousing these sentiments in the hearts of the faithful”.
The fury of the wicked against Jesus

In his reflections on the day’s readings, Pope Francis said that the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, reads almost like a news report about what will happen to Jesus. “It’s almost an historical account of what will happen later”, he said. It tells how “the wicked” are obsessed with Jesus because He reproves them for their evil way of life; and so they plan to test Him “with revilement and torture”, and ultimately “condemn Him to a shameful death”.

How to pray with the Pope on Friday
27 March 2020, 08:38

Join Pope Francis in prayer and receive his extraordinary “Urbi et orbi” blessing and plenary indulgence on Friday at 6pm Rome time.
By Linda Bordoni

Faithful across the world are invited to join Pope Francis spiritually in prayer on Friday, 27 March at 6 pm Rome time.

The Director of the Holy See Press Office confirmed that the moment of prayer on Friday will be broadcast live from the Vatican, beginning at 6 pm Rome time. He noted that the plenary indulgence attached to the Urbi et orbi blessing is subject to the conditions foreseen by the recent Decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary.

Pope Francis will pray before an empty Square from the sagrato of St. Peter’s Basilica, the platform at the top of the steps immediately in front of the façade of the Church, as he explained when he made the announcement on Sunday and as he reiterated on Wednesday during the General Audience:

"We will listen to the Word of God, we will raise our supplication, we will adore the Blessed Sacrament, at the end I will impart the Urbi et orbi Blessing, and you will have the possibility of receiving a plenary indulgence."

From 6pm Rome time, the ceremony will be broadcast live to the world by Vatican Media and can be followed in several languages on our website, on our Facebook page via Facebook Live and on our YouTube channel.

It will consist in readings from the Scriptures, prayers of supplication, and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; and will conclude with Pope Francis giving the Urbi et orbi Blessing, with the possibility of gaining a plenary indulgence for all those who listen to it live through the various forms of communication. This plenary indulgence will also be extended to those who may not be able to participate in the prayer through the media due to illness but who unite themselves in spiritual communion with the prayer.

The blessing “to the City [of Rome] and to the World” is normally only given on Christmas and Easter.

The extraordinary moment of prayer in time of pandemic will last about an hour. The “Salus Populi Romani” icon and the crucifix of St. Marcellus, will be placed in front of the central door of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the altar in the atrium of the Vatican Basilica

What is the ‘Urbi et Orbi’ Blessing? Pope Francis is Imparting it Today Extraordinarily
Special Prayer for End to Pandemic
March 27, 2020 15:45 LARISSA I. LOPEZ

Today, March 27, 2020, Pope Francis will preside over an extraordinary moment of prayer, to implore for an end to the pandemic, which will culminate with the imparting of the Urbi et Orbi blessing, to which will be attached the possibility of receiving a Plenary Indulgence.

It will take place in the sagrato (the courtyard in front of the entrance) of Saint Peter’s Basilica, facing an empty Square, as the Holy Father announced last Sunday, March 22, 2020, at the end of the Angelus prayer.

The Urbi et Orbi blessing was the usual formula with which the proclamations of the Roman Empire began.

At present, it’s the most solemn blessing that the Pope imparts, proper of the Petrine ministry, because it refers to the city of Rome, as Bishop of the diocese, and to the world, as Supreme Pontiff, explained liturgist, Father Arturo Elberti.

Pope’s special Urbi et Orbi blessing: ‘God turns everything to our good’
27 March 2020, 19:00

Pope Francis delivers an extraordinary blessing “To the City and to the World” on Friday to pray for an end to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. In his meditation, the Pope reflects on Jesus’ words to His disciples: “Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?”
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis held the special Urbi et Orbi on Friday from the steps of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Usually a colorful event reserved only for Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, this extraordinary blessing was held in keeping with the gravity of the current global situation, as more than half of the world’s population is confined to their homes to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Standing in a deserted St. Peter’s Square with a steady rain falling, Pope Francis spoke to the world through all the means of modern communication: Facebook, YouTube, TV, and radio.

Symbols of faith

He prayed for the world at this critical juncture in the presence of two images that have accompanied the people of Rome for centuries: the ancient icon of Mary Salus Populi Romani – usually housed in the Basilica of St. Mary Major – and the miraculous crucifix kept in the church of San Marcello on the city’s Via del Corso.

Most importantly, the Pope exposed the Blessed Sacrament for adoration and imparted his Apostolic Blessing, offering everyone the opportunity to receive a plenary indulgence.

Pope at Urbi et orbi: Full text of his meditation
27 March 2020, 20:08

Pope Francis meditated on the calming of the storm from the Gospel of Mark during the prayer service over which he presided on the steps of St Peter's Basilica on Friday evening. Here is the full text.

“When evening had come” (Mk 4:35). The Gospel passage we have just heard begins like this. For weeks now it has been evening. Thick darkness has gathered over our squares, our streets and our cities; it has taken over our lives, filling everything with a deafening silence and a distressing void, that stops everything as it passes by; we feel it in the air, we notice in people’s gestures, their glances give them away. We find ourselves afraid and lost. Like the disciples in the Gospel we were caught off guard by an unexpected, turbulent storm. We have realized that we are on the same boat, all of us fragile and disoriented, but at the same time important and needed, all of us called to row together, each of us in need of comforting the other. On this boat… are all of us. Just like those disciples, who spoke anxiously with one voice, saying “We are perishing” (v. 38), so we too have realized that we cannot go on thinking of ourselves, but only together can we do this.

By Vatican News

Fr Giuseppe Tonello is the latest to be appointed counsellor to the Apostolic Penitentiary. He is an Italian priest who is a Member of the Disciplinary Commission of the Rome Vicariate. He earned his law degree at Rome’s Pontifical Holy Cross University.

Vatican Dicasteries regularly include a certain number of counsellors, or advisors, who are experts in their specific fields.

Tribunal of mercy

The Apostolic Penitentiary is one of the tribunals of the Roman Curia, and is responsible for issues relating to the forgiveness of sins. Also called the “Tribunal of mercy”, its field of jurisdiction includes the lifting of excommunications, the dispensation of sacramental impediments, and the issuance and governance of indulgences.
