Pope at Mass prays for media workers
06 May 2020, 08:33

During Mass at the Casa Santa Marta Pope Francis prays for all those who work in the media in this time of pandemic and reflects on Jesus as the light who brings us out of darkness.
By Lydia O'Kane

At the beginning of Mass at the Casa Santa Marta on Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Easter, Pope Francis prayed for those who work in the media.

“We pray for the men and women who work in the media. In this time of pandemic they risk a lot and work a lot. May the Lord help them to always transmit the truth.”

In his homily, the Pope reflected on Wednesday’s Gospel (Jn 12:44-50) in which Jesus says: “I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness”.

Pope at Audience: ‘We are all beggars before God’
06 May 2020, 10:20

Pope Francis begins a new series of catechesis during the General Audience on the theme of prayer and invites the faithful never to suffocate that cry for hope and salvation.
By Linda Bordoni

Taking inspiration from the Gospel episode of Bartimaeus, the blind beggar from Jericho who is able to see again after making a profession of faith in Jesus, Pope Francis invited Christians to reach out to God with prayer and to persevere in their journey of faith.

Addressing the faithful from the Library of the Apostolic Palace during his live-streamed weekly General Audience, the Pope reflected on the reading from the Gospel of Mark (Mk 10:47) and described prayer as “the breath of faith, a cry arising from the hearts of those who trust in God.”

Pope at Mass prays for artists: ‘without beauty we cannot understand the Gospel’
07 May 2020, 08:22

Pope Francis celebrates Thursday morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta with special prayers for artists and an invitation to Christians never to forget they are part of the chosen people of God.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis presides over Mass on Thursday of the Fourth Week of Easter. During his introduction he turns his thoughts to artists saying that yesterday he received a letter from a group of them thanking him for his prayers:

“I would like to ask the Lord to bless them because through artists we understand beauty, and without beauty we cannot understand the Gospel,” he said.

At the end of his General Audience on Wednesday on the theme of prayer, the Pope said, “It is artists who often interpret this silent groan which weighs on every creature and is expressed above all in the heart of men and women, for “man is a beggar before God.”

Covid-19: UN urges unity and service on Buddhist feast of Vesakh
07 May 2020, 13:29

he UN chief has released a message for Vesakh, underscoring Buddha’s timeless message of unity and service. The Vatican had earlier released a message for the occasion.
By Robin Gomes

Many Buddhists across the world are marking the feast of Vesakh on May 7.   Sometimes informally called "Buddha's Birthday", Vesakh actually commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha, and is celebrated on different days in different countries.

The Vatican on Vesakh

Earlier, on April 2, the Vatican had also released a message  for Vesakh. Entitled, “Buddhists and Christians: Constructing a Culture of Compassion and Fraternity”, the message by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID) encouraged the followers of the two religions in the service of “a wounded humanity”.  It underscored the high value given by both religions to compassion and fraternity.

In this regard, the Vatican recalled the words of Pope Francis when he met the Supreme Buddhist Patriarch of Thailand in Bangkok on November 21 last year. “We can grow and live together as good ‘neighbours’,” the Pope said, “and thus be able to promote among the followers of our religions the development of new charitable projects, capable of generating and multiplying practical initiatives on the path of fraternity.”

Vatican news spoke with Cardinal Louis Raphaël Sako, the Catholic Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans. He spoke positively about this turn of events in Iraq.

Day of prayer and fasting

Cardinal Sako concluded speaking of the day of prayer and fasting recently promoted by Pope Francis. He said thaat due to the restrictions in place to stem the spread of Covid-19, there cannot be a public ecumenical prayer service as he would have wished.

Cincinnati auxiliary bishop resigns after failing to act on allegations
By Ed Condon

Washington, D.C. Newsroom, May 7, 2020 / 07:55 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Joseph Binzer, Cincinnati's auxiliary bishop, who was accused in August of failing to act on allegations made against a priest.

A statement from the Holy See press office May 7 said the pope had accepted the 65-year-old bishop’s resignation but gave no reason for the decision.

In a statement released by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr said the pope accepted Binzer’s resignation after conversations between the bishop and the Holy See.

The archdiocese also included a brief statement from Binzer in which he said he was “deeply sorry for my role in addressing the concerns raised about Father Drew, which has had a negative impact on the trust and faith of the people of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.”

Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima to be held without the faithful
07 May 2020, 12:03

As large gatherings and assemblies are still prohibited due to the coronavirus, pilgrimages usually undertaken on the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima will all be virtual.
By Vatican News

The streets will be empty this year as the world gathers, virtually, to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima. The annual celebrations usually see thousands of pilgrims making their way to the Shrine of Our Lady in Cova da Iria in Fatima, on the 13th of every month from May through to October – the days of the six apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the three children of Fatima in 1917.

This year, due to the coronavirus measures, 350 groups have been forced to cancel their pilgrimages. There will be no pilgrims in Fatima and there will be no faithful present to celebrate this miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary on her Feast Day.

A spiritual journey

To compensate for the impossibility of pilgrims going to Cova da Iria, the Shrine of Fatima proposes a "spiritual journey", with suggestions for daily prayers, as an alternative. They can be found on the shrine’s website at: www.fatima.pt and on social networks.

Fr Carlos Cabecinhas, the Rector of the shrine of Fatima, launched a message in which he invited the faithful to join in a "pilgrimage of the heart", whose path will not be physical, "but interior". Pilgrims are also invited to light a candle in the windows of their homes every day until 12 May.

The future reopening

The resumption of Masses with the physical participation of the faithful in Portugal is scheduled for 30 May. The Shrine of Fatima will gradually resume its activities, already reopening today for individual prayer, while the museum space will be reopened on 19 May.

Update:  Cardinal Pell

https://www.vaticannews.va/en/church/news/2020-05/cardinal-pell-surprised-by-royal-commission-statement.html
Cardinal Pell surprised by Royal Commission statements
07 May 2020, 14:05

In a statement issued on Thursday, Cardinal Pell says some of the views of the Royal Commission concerning his actions with regard to child sexual abuse are not supported by the evidence.
By Vatican News

Cardinal George Pell says he was “surprised” at some of the views expressed by Australia’s Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. In a statement, the Cardinal said, “These views are not supported by the evidence”.

Although the Royal Commission’s delivered its Final Report  to Parliament in December 2017, findings related to Cardinal Pell had been redacted due to ongoing legal proceedings. The case against Cardinal Pell was concluded on 7 April 2020, when the Australian High Court overturned his conviction, saying the evidence produced at his trial “did not establish guilt to the requisite standard of proof".

The newly released findings from the Royal Commission are critical of Pell’s involvement in several cases involving notorious instances of clerical abuse primarily in the 1970s and 80s.

Statement by Cardinal Pell

In a separate statement also issued on Thursday, Cardinal Pell said he was “especially” surprised by statements in the final report concerning the case of George Ridsdale, a priest who committed more than 130 acts of abuse against children over the course of several decades beginning in the 1960s. Diocesan officials, including Pell, were involved in decisions to transfer Ridsdale between parishes. The Commission looked especially at two personnel meetings, which took place in 1977 and 1982. The Cardinal’s statement notes evidence presented to the Commission that Ridsdale’s offences were not known to officials at the time those decisions were made. Pell left the diocese in 1984.

Cardinal Pell also took issue with the final report’s views with regard to the Peter Searson case while Pell was an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Melbourne. Searson was accused of abusing children in parishes and schools over more than a decade beginning in the 1960s. He was never formally charged, however, on the basis of those allegations. Pell says that he met in 1989 with a delegation from a parish at which Searson was assigned. No mention was made of sexual assaults, and the delegation did not ask for Searson’s removal, Pell’s statement says. Pell adds that shortly after being named Archbishop of Melbourne in 1996, he placed Searson on administrative leave, and removed him from the parish less than two months later, in May 1997.

Public Masses in Italy will resume on 18 May
08 May 2020, 14:40

In Italy, Masses, weddings, funerals and baptisms are set to resume in Italy on 18 May, with the provision that those attending abide by a strict set of social distancing and sanitation measures.
By Vatican News

After two months of live-streamed Masses and private prayer at home, the faithful in Italy will once again be able to attend religious ceremonies in churches around the country.

The news came on Thursday, 7 May with the signing of a Protocol, by Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, President of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, and the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorghese.

The protocol outlines rules and regulations that must be followed in order to ensure minimal risk of contagion of the coronavirus.

All religious ceremonies – Masses, baptisms, weddings and funerals – were either cancelled or closed to the public in early March when the government imposed a nationwide lockdown to help curb the spread of Covid-19, a virus that has now killed almost 30,000 people in Italy alone.

Pope at Mass: the Church experiences both consolation and persecution
09 May 2020, 06:56

Pope Francis offers Saturday’s Mass for the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul who help the Pope and live in the Casa Santa Marta. In his homily, he says the Holy Spirit makes the Church grow, while the evil spirit tries to destroy it with envy, power and money.
By Robin Gomes

Celebrating Holy Mass on the Saturday of the Fourth Week of Easter, the Pope recalled the memorial of Saint Luisa de Marillac, who co-founded the Daughters of Charity with Saint Vincent de Paul. A community of the nuns lives in the Casa Santa Marta, and run the paediatric dispensary in the Vatican.  Her feast day was earlier on March 15 but since it fell during Lent, it was moved to May 9 in 2016.

A  painting of the foundress was placed at the side of the altar in the chapel for her feast.

“Today is the commemoration of Saint Luisa de Marillac,” the Pope said at the start of the Mass.  “Let us pray for the Vincentian sisters who have been running this clinic, this hospital, for almost 100 years and have worked here, in Santa Marta, for this hospital. May the Lord bless the sisters,” he said.

Preaching and persecution

In his homily, Pope Francis commented on the passage from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 13:44-52) where the Jews of Antioch "filled with jealousy and with violent abuse” contradicted Paul's statements about Jesus. They incited the pious noblewomen and the famous people of the city, provoking a persecution that forced Paul and Barnabas to leave the territory.

Vatican Museums set to reopen
09 May 2020, 13:00

The Secretary-General of the Vatican City State Governorate, Bishop Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, lays out plans for reopening the Vatican Museums.
By Vatican News

The Vatican Museums will soon be reopened to the public, while following the safety guidelines prescribed by Italian and Vatican health officials. They will be accessible only by reservation.

In keeping with the precautionary steps taken by Italian authorities due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the Vatican Museums has closed its doors to the public since 9 March. The Museums have only been accessible digitally, free of charge, through virtual tours offered on its website.

In an interview with Vatican News, the Secretary-General of the Vatican City State Governorate, Bishop Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, explained that, while virtual tours can be enhanced, “virtual reality can never replace reality.” He said: “Let us not forget that what brings museums alive are people. To enjoy art, you need your eyes and heart.”
Reopening plans

Bishop Vérgez pointed out that, as the date for the reopening of museums in Italy draws near, the Vatican Museums are taking steps to ensure people’s health is protected.
“For the incoming public, we are completing the installation of thermoscanners for temperature readings,” he said.

Bishop Vérgez also explained that entry to the Museums will be by reservation only so that the number of people inside can be managed. He also noted that no large groups will be allowed at this time. Also, visitors to the Museums will be required to wear a facemask.

On the Fifth Sunday of Easter, Pope Francis offers Mass for the unity of Europe and reflects on the most important task of every Bishops: prayer
By Sr Bernadette Mary Reis, fsp

Pope Francis began Sunday morning Mass at the Casa Santa Marta recalling two anniversaries that have fallen in the past two days. The first, “the 70th anniversary of Robert Shuman’s Declaration out of which the European Union was born", and the second, "the commemoration of the end of the war”. He invited us to “pray to the Lord for Europe that it might grow united, in this fraternal unity that allows all peoples to grow in unity in diversity”.

During his homily, he reflected on Jesus’s intercessory role before His Father described in the Gospel (John 14:1-12). Then he focused on Peter's description of the role of the Apostles (Acts 6:1-7). This also applies to the role of the Successors of the Apostles, the Bishops. Their first task, Pope Francis emphasized, is prayer, then the proclamation of the Word.

Jesus’s intercessory role

The Pope said that the first part of John chapter 14 describes Jesus’s intercessory role before the Father on our behalf. So many times Jesus spoke about the Father’s care for us, Pope Francis said. “He spoke of the Father as the One who takes care of us just as He takes care of the birds of heaven and the lilies of the field”, he said.

“Jesus is very strong in this passage. It is as if He is opening the doors of the omnipotence of prayer: ‘Whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it’ (John 13-14)."

Pope Francis then recalled that prayer requires courage and the same boldness needed in preaching the Gospel. Abraham and Moses provide examples to us. Both “negotiated” with the Lord, Pope Francis said: Abraham, when the Lord told him about what was to happen to Sodom and Gomorrah (see Genesis 18:16-33), and Moses, when God wanted to destroy His people and make Moses the head of another nation (see Exodus 32:7-14).

Pope at Regina Caeli: 'a self-centered life does not lead to joy'
10 May 2020, 12:07

How can we go through life without anxiety and anguish? How can we make sure we are on the right path? Pope Francis reflects on Jesus’ “Farewell discourse” during the Regina Caeli address on the Fifth Sunday of Easter.
By Linda Bordoni

During a live-streamed address from the Vatican's Apostolic Library, Pope Francis prayed the Regina Caeli and invited the faithful never to fall into despair, but to trust in Jesus in the knowledge that he is always at our side and that there is a place awaiting us in Heaven.

He centered his catechesis on the Gospel passage of the day (Jn 14: 1-12) in which, he said, we hear the beginning of Jesus’ so-called “Farewell discourse” when, at the end of the Last Supper and just before the start of the Passion, Jesus reassures the disciples saying “Do not let your hearts be troubled”. The Lord is saying these same words to us, he said, “But how can we make sure that our hearts are not troubled?”

Pope at Mass prays for those who have lost their jobs
11 May 2020, 08:22

Pope Francis turns his thoughts during morning Mass to those who are suffering because they have lost their jobs due to the pandemic and reflects on how God has sent the Holy Spirit to accompany and sustain us throughout our lives.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis presided over Mass at the Casa Santa Marta on the Monday of the Fifth Week of Easter. During his introduction he said that at this time his thoughts go to the unemployed.

“In these days many people have lost their jobs”, the Pope said, many have not been re-employed, or are  working "under the table."

“We pray for these brothers and sisters of ours who are suffering because of lack of work,” he said.

During the homily, the Pope commented on today's Gospel (Jn 14:21-26). He said it is the ‘Farewell Discourse’ after the Last Supper in which Jesus reassures His disciples and tells them they will never be left alone.

“Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.”

Pope Francis explained this is the promise of the Holy Spirit who dwells with us, and whom the Father and the Son have sent to accompany us in life.

Pope Francis praises late cardinal’s ‘gentleness of spirit’

Vatican City, May 12, 2020 / 09:30 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis has paid tribute to the Italian Cardinal Renato Corti, who died May 12 aged 84.
In a telegram Tuesday, the pope said the cardinal was “animated in all things by a passionate desire to communicate the Gospel of Christ.”

Corti preached the spiritual exercises to the Roman Curia in 2005 in the presence of St. John Paul II, who died later that year.

In 2015, he wrote the meditations for the Good Friday Way of the Cross at the Colosseum in Rome. A year later, he received the red hat from Pope Francis.
