Pope at audience: The "infirmity" of Jesus is a teaching of Christmas
23 December 2020, 10:09
During his general audience of Wednesday, Pope Francis urges Christians to make the celebration of the birth of Jesus rich in faith, not merely a sentimental or consumerist event
.
By Vatican News
Christmas teaches us that God did not look down upon us and pass by but He fully assumed our nature and our human condition, except sin. This event gives meaning to human existence and to the whole of history and can remove the pessimism generated by the pandemic. Pope Francis made the point in this week’s general audience, two days before Christmas.

Pope Francis will celebrate Christmas liturgies at the Vatican
2020/12/24
The Vatican has made arrangements to guarantee Pope Francis' Christmas ceremonies. The pandemic has forced a change in the location and schedule of the ceremonies
.
On Dec. 24, the "Midnight Mass," which was scheduled at 9:30 p.m., has been moved to 7:30 p.m. by the pope. It will be at the Altar of the Chair in St. Peter's Basilica and not at the central altar.
This year, the pope will not come out to this balcony at noon for the "Urbi et Orbi" blessing on Dec. 25, though he will be very close.
He will give it from inside that hall, which is known as the Hall of Blessings. Therefore, it is possible that when he finishes, he will lean out to bless the city and the world in these difficult times.

Pope at Christmas Mass: Jesus comes as a child to make us children of God
24 December 2020, 20:50
Millions of people around the world join Pope Francis virtually for the Christmas “Mass during the Night,” celebrated in St Peter’s Basilica on Thursday
.
By Vatican News staff writer
With Italy under a new lockdown for the holidays, Pope Francis celebrated Christmas Mass “during the Night” in a near empty Saint Peter’s Basilica on Thursday evening. Millions of people were able to follow the ceremony through radio, television and the various means of social communications.
In his homily, Pope Francis said, “The birth of Jesus is the ‘newness’ that enables us to be reborn each year, and to find, in Him, the strength needed to face every trial.”

Pope at Urbi et Orbi: Christmas reminds us we are all united as brothers and sisters
25 December 2020, 12:01
“To us a child is born, to us a son is given” (Is 9:6). The theme of the Pope’s Christmas message looks at how Jesus was born for everyone, “the ‘Son’ that God has given to the entire human family”
By Vatican News staff reporter
Pope Francis gave his traditional Christmas message and Blessing Urbi et Orbi (“To the City [of Rome] and the World”), offering words of hope and consolation, saying a birth is always a source of hope, and “this Child, Jesus, was born ‘to us’ … without any borders, privileges or exclusions.”
He pronounced his message in the Hall of Benediction of St. Peter’s Basilica, the upper area just behind the central loggia where he would usually have delivered his message. The pandemic and safety measures in place led to a decision to avoid the risk of large public gatherings in St. Peter’s Square and hence to broadcast live his message from inside the Basilica.

Pope at Angelus: Christian witnesses turn evil into good with love
26 December 2020, 12:16
At the Angelus prayer on the feast of Saint Stephen, Pope Francis urges Christians to witness to faith in Christ, by repaying evil with good and breaking the cycle of hatred with love
.
By Devin Watkins
Pope Francis prayed the Angelus at noon on Saturday, as the Church marks the feast of St. Stephen.
The Pope said the saint was the first person to witness to Jesus with his life, making him the first Christian martyr, which means “witness”.
St. Stephen was “the first of a host of brothers and sisters who continue even today to bring the light into the darkness.” These men and women, added the Pope, do not succumb to violence but break the chains of hatred with meekness and love.
“In the world’s nights, these witnesses bring God’s dawn,” he said.

Pope Francis reflects on Holy Family at Sunday Angelus
27 December 2020, 12:41
During his Sunday Angelus address, Pope Francis announces a year to study more deeply the content of the Apostolic Exhortation “Amoris laetitia” during his reflection on the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
.
By Vatican News staff reporter
Sunday’s feast of the Holy Family, said Pope Francis at the weekly Angelus, calls us to reflect “on the fact that the Son of God wanted to be in need of the warmth of a family, like all children.” This is why the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph can serve as a model “in which all families of the world can find their sure point of reference and sure inspiration.”

Pope Francis to mark fifth anniversary of ‘Amoris laetitia’ with year dedicated to family
Vatican City, Dec 27, 2020 / 04:16 am MT (CNA)
.-
Pope Francis announced Sunday a special year dedicated to the family, marking the fifth anniversary of the publication of his apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia
.
In his Angelus address Dec. 27, the feast of the Holy Family, the pope noted that March 19, 2021, would mark five years since the signing of Amoris laetitia following synods on the family in 2014 and 2015.
He said: “Today’s feast reminds us of the example of evangelising with the family, proposing to us once again the ideal of conjugal and family love, as underlined in the apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia, promulgated five years ago this coming March 19. And it will be a year of reflection on Amoris laetitia and it will be an opportunity to focus more closely on the contents of the document. These reflections will be made available to ecclesial communities and families, to accompany them on their journey.”
The dicastery also announced the creation of a new website,
www.amorislaetitia.va
, dedicated to the year, which will begin on March 19, 2021, and end on June 26, 2022, with the celebration of the 10th World Meeting of Families in Rome.
It explained that an “informational brochure” would be available on the site, which currently redirects to the dicastery’s homepage.

Administration of Secretariat of State holdings passes to APSA
28 December 2020, 13:36
A Motu Proprio of Pope Francis officially authorizes the transfer announced in an earlier letter to Cardinal Parolin, after preparation by a special commission. It strengthens the supervisory role of the Secretariat for the Economy which will function as a papal secretariat over economic and financial matters.
By Vatican News
With the Motu Proprio focusing on areas of competence in economic and financial matters, dated December 26 and published today, Pope Francis authorizes the transfer of the management of financial investments and real estate holdings owned by the Secretariat of State (including the administration of Peter’s Pence), over to the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA), effective as of 1 January 2021. Pope Francis previously announced this decision last August in a letter to the Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin; it was then subsequently developed by a special "Commission of transfer and control" established in early November.

As befits the memory of a master of the official language of the Church, Pope Francis’ condolences for the passing of Fr. Reginald Foster, OCD, came in Latin.
The late Carmelite friar—beloved of Vatican Radio listeners as “The Latin-lover”—served as one of the Vatican’s foremost experts in the Latin language for nearly 40 years.
He died in his hometown of Milwaukee, in the US state of Wisconsin, on Christmas Day, at the age of 81.
Decades of service
Pope Francis sent a telegram on Monday to Fr. Saverio Cannistrà, the Father General of the Order of Discalced Carmelite Friars, to express his condolences. The note was signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
The Pope expressed his appreciation for Fr. Reginald’s many years of service to the Holy See.
He worked from 1970 until 2009 in the Latin Letters section of the Secretariat of State, translating innumerable papal and Vatican documents into Latin.
Acknowledging his years of service, Pope Francis said Fr. Reginald “demonstrated the brilliance of Latin to copious numbers of students.”
And the Holy Father prayed that the Latinist of the Popes might receive from God “recompense in full measure.”

Pope Francis will not preside over end of the year Vespers and the solemn chanting of the Te Deum this evening, 31 December, in St. Peter’s Basilica, or at the Holy Mass for the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God on 1 January, due to “painful sciatica.”

Pope reflects on past year: pandemic prompts acts of compassion
31 December 2020, 17:26
In the homily prepared for New Year’s eve Vespers, Pope Francis asks how we can give thanks to God after such a difficult year. God, he says, always has compassion for us, and we are thankful for the acts of closeness, care, and solidarity that we have seen throughout 2020

Pope Francis, suffering from an attack of sciatica, was absent from the celebration of Vespers and the recitation of the Te Deum – the Church’s solemn chant of Thanksgiving for the past year – but nonetheless offered a reflection on how we can give thanks for the year that is drawing to a close.
The liturgy was presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who pronounced the homily prepared by Pope Francis for the occasion.

Pope: Mary is the road we must travel to reach Jesus

In a homily read by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, Pope Francis reflects on three words that find their fulfilment in Mary, the Mother of God: to bless, to be born, and to find
.
By Vatican News staff reporter
Holy Mass for the Solemnity of Mary, the Most Holy Mother of God, was celebrated on the morning of New Year’s Day by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, standing in for Pope Francis, who is suffering a painful attack of sciatica.
In his homily, which was read by Cardinal Parolin, Pope Francis focused on three words from the day’s readings: to bless, to be born, and to find, which he said “find their fulfillment in the Mother of God.”
To bless
Beginning with the first Reading, where God commands Moses to bless the people, Pope Francis writes, “This is no pious exhortation: it is a specific request.” We need to be blessed, the Pope said; and at Christmas, we receive “not only the words of blessing, but the blessing itself: Jesus is Himself the blessing of the Father.”
Whereas Jesus is the blessing, Mary is blessed through grace, and “in this way, brings us God’s blessing. Wherever she is, Jesus comes to us,” the Pope said. Similarly we too are called to bless, to speak well, of others, of society, and of ourselves, especially in a world so often “polluted” by speaking and thinking badly.

Pope at Angelus: Entrust yourselves to Mary for a united world
01 January 2021, 13:18
Pope Francis recites his first Angelus of the New Year, focusing on the importance of entrusting ourselves to the motherly gaze of Mary – through whom all is possible
.
By Vatican News staff writer
Pope Francis opened his first Angelus of the New Year by urging the faithful to join in “placing ourselves under the maternal and loving gaze of Mary Most Holy”. The Pope explained that the day’s liturgy celebrates Mary “as Mother of God”.
Pope Francis went on to explain that throughout our journey along the paths of time, “the reassuring and consoling gaze of the Blessed Virgin Mary” is one of encouragement as we entrust our anguish and torment to her, “who can do all things”. Mary looks at us with the same maternal tenderness with which she looked at her son Jesus, and this gaze is “an encouragement”, he said. This gaze, ensures that this time “given to us by the Lord” can be one that is spent “for our human and spiritual growth”, the Pope continued; a time “to iron out hatred and divisions”; “to feel that we are all more brothers and sisters”; “to build and not to destroy” and “to take care of one another and of creation”.

Vatican reaffirms non-supernatural origins of alleged Marian apparition in Amsterdam
Peter Doorakkers – Katholiek Nieuwsblad Jan 1, 2021
The Dutch diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam has affirmed the negative Vatican verdict on the alleged mid-20th-century apparitions of the Blessed Virgin in Amsterdam. These alleged apparitions became known as the “Lady of All Nations,” a devotion that has since spread across the borders of the Netherlands
.
However, although Mary may be venerated under the title ‘Lady of all Nations,’ this may in no way be interpreted or presented as a recognition of the alleged apparitions and messages, according to local bishop Jan Hendriks in a clarification published on Wednesday.
Questions had arisen after several news outlets, among them the Dutch Catholic newspaper Katholiek Nieuwsblad, reported that the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (CDF) had reaffirmed its 1974 negative judgment on the supernatural character of the apparitions.

Pope at Angelus: God loves us in all our frailty
03 January 2021, 12:10
Pope Francis reflects on how by making himself flesh, God united himself to humanity, loving us in all our frailty and inviting us to share everything with Him
.
By Vatican News staff writer
Pope Francis on Sunday invited the faithful to invite God into their homes, their families, to share with Him their frailties and fears in order to allow Him to change their lives.
Speaking during the Angelus on the second Sunday after Christmas, the Pope contemplated the tenderness of the Child Jesus in the crib, and reflected on the Gospel of John (Jn 1:1) explaining that, especially in the prologue, “it tells us about Him before He was born.”
He said that the apostle uses similar words to those used in the Bible with the account of Creation, but says that today “the One we contemplated at His Birth, existed before: before things began, before the universe. He existed before space and time. “In Him was life” (Jn 1:4), before life appeared.”
