Holy See: The Church cannot bless same-sex unions
15 March 2021, 12:00

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith responds in the negative to the possibility of imparting a blessing to unions of same-sex couples, noting that it “does not imply a judgment on persons” involved.
By Vatican News

The Church does not have the power to bless same-sex unions. Such blessings, therefore cannot “be considered licit”, according to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) which issued on Monday a Response to a dubium that had been presented. Therefore, it is not licit for priests to bless homosexual couples who ask for some type of religious recognition of their union. The CDF says Pope Francis was informed and “gave his assent” to the publication of the Response and an accompanying Explanatory Note signed by the Prefect, Cardinal Luis Ladaria, and the Secretary, Archbishop Giacomo Morandi. The Holy See Press Office also published an Article of Commentary on the Responsum ad dubium.

The statement is based on specific assertions and some actual practices. The document situates its Response into the context of the “sincere desire to welcome and accompany homosexual persons, to whom are proposed paths of growth in faith”, as expressed also in the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris laetitia, which speaks of “the assistance they [those who manifest a homosexual orientation] need to understand and fully carry out God’s will in their lives.” Therefore, pastoral plans and proposals in this regard are to be evaluated, including those concerning the blessings of such unions.

Fundamental to the CDF’s Response is the distinction that must be made between ‘persons’ and ‘union’. The negative response given to the blessing of a union does not, in fact, imply a judgement regarding the individuals involved, who must be welcomed “with respect, compassion, and sensitivity” avoiding “every sign of unjust discrimination” as already written in Magisterial documents.

Full text: Vatican doctrinal office’s response to a question on the blessing of same-sex unions

CNA Staff, Mar 15, 2021 / 05:52 am MT (CNA).- Here is the full text of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s response to a question on the blessing of same-sex unions, followed by an accompanying commentary, issued March 15, 2021:

Responsum of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to a dubium regarding the blessing of the unions of persons of the same sex

TO THE QUESTION PROPOSED:

Does the Church have the power to give the blessing to unions of persons of the same sex?

RESPONSE:

Pope requests study of worship congregation before naming new prefect
Cindy Wooden  Mar 15, 2021
CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE

ROME — Before Pope Francis names a new prefect for the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, he has asked that an outside expert consult with the office’s staff and review its procedures.

The pope in late February accepted the resignation of Guinean Cardinal Robert Sarah, who had reached the normal retirement age of 75 last June. The cardinal had been prefect since 2014.

A French website reported March 12 that it would be a “canonical visitation” carried out by Bishop Claudio Maniago of Castellaneta, president of the Italian bishops’ conference’s liturgical commission and a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments.

In response to questions from Catholic News Service, Archbishop Arthur Roche, who has served as secretary of the congregation since 2012, had an assistant reply that “this is not a canonical visitation. Rather it is more in the nature of the consultations a diocesan bishop would have with his vicar general and others when he is appointing a new parish priest. In such an instance, the idea is to get to know the needs of the parish, the actual situation, as well as having an eye to its future direction.”

The congregation is charged with promoting the celebration of the Mass and the sacraments and fostering their correct celebration, including by overseeing the approval of the translations of liturgical books and texts.

Pope designates buildings near St. John Lateran Basilica for cultural purposes
16 March 2021, 14:52

In a letter addressed to the Vicar for the Diocese of Rome, Pope Francis designates the buildings annexed to the Papal Basilica of Saint John Lateran for museum and cultural activities in various forms and contents.
By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis has written a letter to the Vicar for the Diocese of Rome, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, authorizing the use of the buildings attached to the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran for museum and culture-related purposes.

“Throughout the centuries, the Church has always worked to promote what is the fruit of the genius and mastery of artists, often as a testimony to experiences of faith and as instruments for giving honor to God,” the Pope’s note read.

“This has been done not only out of love for art, but also to safeguard the cultural heritage in the face of challenges and dangers that would deprive it of its function and value.”

Visitation at Vatican’s liturgy office before Cardinal Sarah’s successor announced
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Mar 16, 2021 / 05:00 pm MT (CNA).- An Italian bishop is carrying out a visitation at the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments less than a month after Cardinal Robert Sarah resigned as prefect.

According to media reports, Bishop Claudio Maniago of Castellaneta, president of the liturgy commission of the Italian bishops’ conference, began a visitation to the Vatican’s liturgy office March 15.

Maniago is also a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship, appointed in 2016.

Pope Francis accepted Cardinal Sarah’s resignation as prefect of the Divine Worship congregation Feb. 20. His successor to lead the office has not yet been named.

Information about Maniago’s visitation has not been made public, but the Italian newspaper La Stampa wrote March 16 that it had confirmed it was taking place and seen an internal email of the congregation announcing the visitation.

According to La Stampa, the March 12 email, from Archbishop Arthur Roche, secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship, said: “The Holy Father has decided, before making appointments to the Congregation, that there should be a visit to the Dicastery by one of his representatives.”

The email reportedly further said that Maniago would be learning about the congregation's work and meeting with officials one by one.

“I have already expressed to the Holy Father our openness to this visit and our sure and sincere welcome to Msgr. Maniago,” Roche reportedly wrote.

“There is nothing to be alarmed about in this. As you know, this style of visit is now becoming a regular occurrence at the end of the mandate of the heads of the Dicastery or at the time of a significant change.”

La Stampa reported that internal consultations of the sort described in Roche’s email did not take place, however, in the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples or the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, which both received new prefects in recent years.

Since Sarah’s resignation was accepted in February, the question has been who might be chosen to replace the Guinean cardinal at the head of the liturgy congregation.

CNA reported last month that Pope Francis could be looking at three possible candidates, one of which is Maniago, the bishop carrying out this month’s visitation.

Pope Francis concludes his catechesis on “prayer as a relationship with the Holy Trinity,” focusing at Wednesday’s General Audience on the work of the Holy Spirit.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis continued his reflections on prayer as a relationship with the Holy Trinity, part of an ongoing series of catechetical lessons on prayer in general.

At Wednesday’s General Audience, the Holy Father focused in particular on the role of the Holy Spirit. “The first gift of every Christian existence is the Holy Spirit,” he said. The Holy Spirit opens our hearts to Christ, and allows us to invoke God as “Abba,” that is, “Father.”

Pope: St. Joseph a model for pastors
18 March 2021, 13:35

Pope Francis on Thursday received the student priests of Rome’s Belgian Pontifical College and reflected on the fatherhood of St. Joseph that a genuine pastor can emulate in caring for the flock entrusted to his care.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis is urging priests to learn the art of fatherhood from St. Joseph by being a shepherd who only seeks the good of the flock entrusted to them.  He made the exhortation on Thursday to a delegation from the Belgian Pontifical College, a hostel for priests from Belgium who study in Rome.  Receiving them on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the College, he recalled that Saint Pope John II had been a boarder there as a student priest from 1946 to 1948

Speaking to the priests on the eve of the feast of St. Joseph, in the Year dedicated to him, who is also the patron of the College, the Holy Father reflected on the Guardian of the Redeemer as a role model for pastors.  “It will do you good to place yourselves and your vocations under his mantle and to learn from him the art of fatherhood, which you will soon be called to exercise in communities and in the areas and ministerial services that will be entrusted to you,” the Pope told the group.

Church ‘exults with joy’ at Year Amoris Laetitia Family
18 March 2021, 13:14

Officials from the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life, along with a married couple, introduce the Year “Amoris Laetitia Family,” which begins on March 19 – the Solemnity of St Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
By Christopher Wells

“The Year ‘Amoris Laetitia Family’ has truly made the Church exult with joy,” says Gabriella Gambino, under-secretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.

Speaking at a press conference introducing the initiative, Dr Gambino, a wife and mother of five, said the Year “is an occasion to give a boost to pastoral ministry for the family, seeking to renew means and strategies, and perhaps even some of the goals of pastoral planning.”

Dr Gambino’s presentation highlighted the efforts of the Dicastery to provide pastoral tools for families, parishes, and dioceses, in order to support their ministries.

Heralds of the Good News

Also present at the press conference was the prefect of the Dicastery, Cardinal Kevin Farrell. He emphasized that “it belongs to the Church’s mission to always be a herald of the good news of the Gospel.”

Recalling the words quoted by Pope Francis at the beginning of Amoris laetitia – “The Christian proclamation on the family is good news indeed” – Cardinal Farrell said, “It is more appropriate than ever, therefore, to dedicate an entire pastoral year to the Christian family, because presenting God’s plan for the family to the world is a source of joy and hope. It is truly good news!”

The Cardinal outlined three particular aspects of the pastoral renewal called for by Pope Francis: greater collaboration; a change of mentality that would allow us to see the family as protagonists, and not simply as objects, of pastoral ministry; and the formation of formators, that is, those who train future ministers.

Pope Francis honours Ireland’s Knock Shrine with special status
19 March 2021, 09:25

The Pope on Friday evening will deliver a special message via video link recognising Knock Shrine as an International Marian and Eucharistic Shrine.
By Lydia O’Kane

The message will be broadcast during Mass that will be celebrated by the Archbishop of Tuam, Michael Neary, and concelebrated by Fr Richard Gibbons, Parish Priest and Rector of Knock Shrine.

This honour comes nearly two and a half years after Pope Francis visited the Marian Shrine, located in the west of Ireland, during his Apostolic Visit to the country for the World Meeting of Families.

While there, he prayed in front of the Chapel of the Apparition for all the families of the world, and presented the Shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Knock with a golden rosary in acknowledgment of the tradition of the family rosary in Ireland.

As part of the three days of celebration to St Joseph, Pope Francis will speak via video at the 7.30pm Mass on 19 March; Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna, will speak at the 7.30pm Mass on 20 March; and to conclude the three days, Archbishop Michael Neary, Archbishop of Tuam will speak at 12pm Mass on Sunday 21 March. (All times are local)

Pope’s message for World Vocations Day: ‘St. Joseph an example of faithful service'
19 March 2021, 12:08

Pope Francis releases a message for the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, and urges all religious and clergy to look to St. Joseph as a model of unreserved fidelity to God’s invitation to service.
By Devin Watkins

As the Church marks the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Pope Francis released his Message for the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, which falls this year on 25 April.

The Pope held up the husband of the Virgin Mary and foster-father of Jesus as a model for all members of the clergy and religious men and women. He drew heavily on his Apostolic Letter Patris Corde, released on 8 December 2020, which seeks to “increase our love for this great saint.”

Heart of a father

St. Joseph, said the Pope, is an extraordinary figure, not because of any astonishing charism or special status, but because he accomplished extraordinary acts of service in his daily life.

“God looks on the heart,” he said, “and in Saint Joseph He recognized the heart of a father, able to give and generate life in the midst of daily routines.”

Pope Francis launches "Amoris Laetitia Family" year
19 March 2021, 16:15

Pope Francis inaugurates the "Amoris Laetitia Family" Year with a message to participants in a webinar on the theme “Our Daily Love”, in which he urges all to support families and accompany them along the journey of life.
By Vatican News staff writer

Five years after the publication of Pope Francis’ post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Amoris laetita, the Vatican inaugurates the “Amoris Laetitia Family” Year. Marking the beginning of the year-long celebration, Pope Francis sent a message on Friday to participants in a webinar on the theme “Our Daily Love”.

Pope Francis opened his message by greeting participants, and in particular, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, the Family and Life; Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, Vicar for the Diocese of Rome, and Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, Grand Chancellor of the John Paul II Theological Institute for the Sciences of Marriage and the Family - who organised the event.

The Pope recalled the publication of the post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris laetitia on the beauty and joy of conjugal and family love, and invited all to “live a year of rereading the Document and reflecting on the theme, until the celebration of the Tenth World Meeting of Families which, God willing, will take place in Rome on 26 June, 2022.”

Pope Francis blesses Carlo Acutis statue for orphanage in Egypt
By Courtney Mares

Vatican City, Mar 19, 2021 / 07:00 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis has blessed a statue of Blessed Carlo Acutis which will be sent to an orphanage in Cairo, Egypt.

The pope received the family of Carlo Acutis in a private audience at the Apostolic Palace on March 18 after his general audience. Acutis’ parents, Andrea and Antonia, were present for the blessing of the statue of their recently beatified son, as were Carlo’s younger twin siblings, Francesca and Michele.

The lifesize statue of a young Carlo Acutis was created by Matteo and Daniela Perathoner, artists from northern Italy who specialize in hand-carved wooden crucifixes. It depicts the young blessed in a red polo shirt and tennis shoes with an image of the Eucharist radiating from his heart.

Blessed Carlo Acutis was a young Catholic from Italy with a passionate devotion to the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and an aptitude for computer programming.

Pope: 'Touching Christ’s wounds in the poor helps create better world'
20 March 2021, 12:23

Pope Francis thanks members of Fidesco, a Catholic NGO, for 40 years of service in promoting the integral development of people in poor countries.
By Robin Gomes

The cry of the poor that echoes within us urges us to go out of our way to touch the wounds of Christ in them, and helps create a better world and establish God’s Kingdom.

The Pope made that remark on Saturday when he met a delegation from Fidesco, an international Catholic non-governmental organization that engages its volunteers and their professional skills in development projects in the poor countries of the world.

A statement released by the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses on Saturday said the event “will be held in the year 2024, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the consecration of that noble country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.”

“This great ecclesial gathering will manifest the fruitfulness of the Eucharist for evangelization and the renewal of faith in the Latin American continent,” the Committee added.

Vatican names former head of financial police to lead foundation managing scandal-ridden hospital
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Mar 20, 2021 / 10:15 am MT (CNA).- The Vatican announced Saturday it had appointed the former commander general of Italy’s financial police force as president of the foundation overseeing a scandal-ridden dermatological hospital in Rome.

Saverio Capolupo, 70, served from 2012 to 2016 as the commander general of the Guardia di Finanza, a militarized police force responsible for dealing with financial crime and smuggling.

Capolupo is now a member of the Council of State, which ensures the legality of Italy’s public administration.

The Vatican named him president of the board of directors of the Luigi Maria Monti Foundation, which owns and manages Rome's Istituto Dermopatico dell’Immacolata, or IDI, along with other health structures.

Pope at Angelus: Witness to Jesus with a life given in service
21 March 2021, 12:09

On the Fifth Sunday of Lent Pope Francis recalled the Gospel reading where some Greeks approach the apostle Philip asking to see Jesus. He said their request reflects symbolically one asked by men and women down through the ages wishing to know Jesus.
By Vatican News staff writer

Addressing the faithful via a live broadcast from the library of the Apostolic Palace due to a new pandemic lockdown in Italy, Pope Francis recalled the great responsibility Christians and our communities have in helping people to meet and know Jesus.

The day’s Gospel reading recounts how Jesus responds to the request of the Greeks by saying “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified…. Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (Jn 12:23-24). The Pope said this answer shows that Jesus is “the hidden seed ready to die in order to bear much fruit” and in order to know and understand Him you look at the cross.

Pope to Filipino College: Have a ‘prophetic gaze’ on future
22 March 2021, 12:50

Pope Francis tells the community of the Pontifical Filipino College in Rome they should “know the past, prepare for the future and fully experience the present as an opportunity for formation and growth in holiness.”
By Vatican News staff reporter

Last Sunday in St Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis commemorated the five-hundredth anniversary of the evangelization of the Philippines and of the celebration of the first Holy Mass, which took place on Easter Sunday, 31 March 1561.

Just a week on from that commemoration, the Pope on Monday met with priests, religious, and laity from the Pontifical Filipino College in Rome, to mark the 60th anniversary of the College’s foundation.

Addressing those gathered in the Vatican, he shared with them some thoughts about time, remarking that time itself is a gift from God “to be used responsibly to express our gratitude to him, to do good works and to look to the future with hope.”
