Bishop urges prayer, fasting in response to blessings of same-sex couples in Germany

San Sebastian, Spain, Apr 19, 2021 / 17:01 pm America/Denver (CNA).

In response to a planned day of blessings for same-sex partners in Germany, the Bishop of San Sebastián on Wednesday called on Catholics to join in prayer for the Church in Germany to be faithful to the Magisterium and not to fall into rebellion.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said March 15 that the Church hasn’t the power to bless same-sex unions.

However, members of the Church in Germany have announced a May 10 event, “Blessings for the unions of people who love each other,” with the participation of priests, deacons, and pastoral workers, and supported by some bishops, such as Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck of Essen.

Bishop José Ignacio Munilla Aguirre tweeted April 14: “I invite you to join a chain of prayer and fasting for the unity of the Church in Germany and throughout the world. Lord, grant us communion in fidelity to the Magisterium of the Church!”

Pope chooses theme for July 25 World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly
Catholic News Service  Apr 20, 2021

ROME — To express the closeness of God and of the church to every older person, Pope Francis has chosen “I am with you always” from the Gospel of Matthew as the theme for the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.

The theme for the celebration July 25 is especially appropriate “in these challenging pandemic times,” said the announcement from the Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life.

“‘I am with you always’ is also a promise of closeness and hope that young and old can mutually share. Not only are grandchildren and young people called upon to be present in the lives of older people, but older people and grandparents also have a mission of evangelization, proclamation and prayer, and of encouraging young people in their faith,” the statement said.

Pope Francis announced in late January that he was establishing the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, which is to be celebrated each year on the fourth Sunday of July to coincide with the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, Jesus’ grandparents.

Pope at Audience: vocal prayer is a sure way speak with God
21 April 2021, 09:30

Pope Francis reflects on the importance of vocal prayer in his catechesis during Wednesday’s General Audience.
By Christopher Wells

Prayer, Pope Francis said at his General Audience on Wednesday, “is dialogue with God; and every creature, in a certain sense, engages in dialogue with God.”

For human beings, he continued, “prayer becomes word, invocation, hymn, poetry… The divine Word is made flesh, and in the flesh of every person the word returns to God in prayer.”

Pope Francis to Speak at President Biden’s Climate Summit
The Holy Father is among the featured presenters on the first of the two-day gathering.
Edward Pentin  Blogs  April 21, 2021

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis will join dozens of world leaders tomorrow when he speaks at President Joe Biden’s two-day online climate summit that is aimed at cutting global emissions and galvanizing “climate ambition.”

The Pope is scheduled to address the meeting via video link sometime during the second session of the “Leaders Summit on Climate,” which will take place in the morning.

According to the summit’s website, that session will focus on “Investing in Climate Solutions,” although the precise topic of the Pope’s talk has not yet been announced.

Discussions during the session will “highlight the urgent need to scale up climate finance; efforts to increase public finance for mitigation and adaptation in developing countries; and efforts to shift trillions of dollars of private investment to finance the transition to net zero by 2050,” the website says.

Pope addresses Covid crisis in message to Ibero-American Summit
21 April 2021, 17:00

Pope Francis highlights the need for solidarity in the face of the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic in a message to the participants of the 27th Ibero-American Summit taking place on 21 April.
By Fr. Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis on Wednesday sent a message to the Secretary-General of the Ibero-American Secretariat, Rebecca Grynspan Mayufis, and to all the Heads of State and Government participating at the 27th Ibero-American Summit.

The summit, which is taking place on Wednesday in Andorra, will see leaders from Latin American countries gather for discussions under the theme: “Innovation for Sustainable Development – Objective 2030.”

In his message, the Holy Father noted that the meeting falls in these particularly difficult times of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has demanded sacrifices from nations and their citizens, yet calls upon the entire international community to commit itself, in a spirit of responsibility and fraternity, to face the many already-existing challenges, and those yet to come.

Vatican dedicates May to global rosary ‘marathon’ for end of COVID-19
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Apr 21, 2021 / 14:00 pm America/Denver (CNA).

The Vatican has announced a rosary initiative dedicating the month of May to prayer for an end to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization said April 21 that “for the deep desire of the Holy Father, the month of May will be dedicated to a prayer marathon with the theme ‘Prayer to God went up incessantly from the whole Church.’”

The council said that the world’s Catholic shrines would be involved in a special way as promoters of the rosary among Catholic individuals, families, and communities.

Thirty of the shrines will take turns leading a daily live-streamed rosary at 12 p.m. Eastern time, the council said.

The Catholic Church dedicates the month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Francis will open the month of prayer on May 1, asking for Mary’s intercession.

Pope Francis calls for urgency in joint efforts on the path towards protecting our planet, in two separate video messages for Earth Day 2021.
By Vatican News staff writer

Commemorating the 51st Earth Day on Thursday, Pope Francis sent two video messages reminding everyone of the importance of working together to protect our planet.

In a message for the Leaders Summit on Climate, the Pope said the initiative sets world leaders on a path towards the COP26 meeting to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, in November 2021.

He said the Leaders Summit encourages nations to "take charge of the care of nature, of this gift that we have received and that we have to heal, guard, and carry forward."

"Our concern is to see that the environment is cleaner, purer, and preserved," said the Pope, "and to take care of nature so that it takes care of us."

In a separate video message marking Earth Day 2021, Pope Francis continued in the same vein.

Pope Francis: ‘Sport should always be a team effort’
22 April 2021, 16:41

Pope Francis receives an Italian water polo team in audience, and recalls the importance of team spirit in any type of sport.
By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis met Thursday with the “Pro Recco Waterpolo 1913” team, one of the most successful water polo clubs in Europe.

The team, which hails from the city of Recco in Italy’s Liguria region, has won 33 Series A1 titles, 14 Italian Cups, 8 LEN Champions League titles, and 6 LEN Super Cups.

Teamwork

Speaking off-the-cuff to the athletes, the Pope recalled that true sport always relies on teamwork.

“The greatest defeat for any athlete,” he said, “is to work and play alone.”

He recalled an Argentinian saying of “morfarse la pelota”, which could be rendered as “hog the ball”.

The Pope pointed out that this attitude runs contrary to the virtues of sport. True competition, he said, should always be done as a team.

Care for nature, pope tells world leaders at climate summit
Vatican City, Apr 22, 2021 / 15:01 pm America/Denver (CNA).

In a video message sent to a climate summit on Thursday, Pope Francis urged care for nature and the preservation of the environment.

“I greet you who are gathered in this initiative, which seems to me a happy one,” the pope said April 22 to participants in a climate summit of 40 international leaders that was organized by US president Joe Biden.

Francis said the summit encourages humanity “to take charge of the care of nature, of this gift that we have received and that we have to heal, guard, and carry forward. This is increasingly significant because it is a challenge we face in the post-pandemic era. We need to keep moving forward and we know that one doesn’t come out of a crisis the same way one entered. We come out either better or worse.”

“Our concern is to see that the environment is cleaner, purer, and preserved. We must take care of nature so that it takes care of us.”

Official prayer of the 10th World Meeting of Families released
22 April 2021, 18:27

The 10th World Meeting of Families is scheduled for June 22 to 26, 2022 in Rome. The Diocese of Rome and the Vatican Dicastery for the Laity, the Family and Life have jointly released the official prayer for the Church event.
By Robin Gomes

The theme chosen by Pope Francis for the 10th World Meeting of the Families (WMOF) is, “Family love: a vocation and a path to holiness”, which has been the inspiration of the official prayer for the ecclesial event.

Praying with family, parish, diocese

“Praying is a way to enter into the heart of the Amoris Laetitia Year and the preparation for the event in Rome,” explained Cardinal Joseph Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, the Family, in a statement to release the prayer. “Many families and communities,” he said, “have been waiting a long time to be able to set out on their way, at least spiritually, to Rome.”  “Prayer will accompany them and help them to grasp the message of the gathering.”

Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, the Vicar of Rome Diocese, of which the Pope is the Bishop, explained that “prayer will be at the heart of the path of preparation”. “It will guide our work and inspire the reflections to help us, in the light of faith, to discern the new challenges that the pandemic emergency poses to the ecclesial community with regard to families.” He thus invited “everyone to prepare for this event of grace that the Church of Rome has the joy of hosting, and to address this prayer to the Lord in the intimacy of their family, together with the parish and diocesan community.”

Pope Francis, in a message signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, expressed his "spiritual closeness" to those affected by the eruption of the volcano La Soufrière, which is located in the Caribbean island state of St Vincent and the Grenadines, situated in the Lesser Antilles. His thoughts and prayers are addressed in particular to “the many displaced persons forced to evacuate their homes and seek shelter from the effects of this disaster,” as well as to rescue workers and volunteers. The Pope has entrusted the entire population "to the loving providence of Almighty God."

The strength of a people who believe in what they pray for
23 April 2021, 14:10

The Marian marathon convened by Pope Francis for the month of May to pray for an end to the pandemic brings to the fore the power of prayer in times of danger, and in particular, the intercession of the Virgin, to whom Christians have had recourse since the dawn of the Gospel.

Defeating the invisible nemesis that slowly extinguishes your capacity to breathe in a hospital room - or perhaps in the street because there simply isn't a hospital that will take you in - and believing you can do so by getting down on your knees.

This might seem a solution more suited to times in which ancient collective superstitions competed with the fresh words of the Gospel, rather than to an era like ours in which individualism exhibited everywhere tends to debase the sense of community action, especially if it as intangible as the spiritual.

CDF to hold study day on 2001 instruction for dissolution of marriage ‘in favorem fidei’
By Hannah Brockhaus

Vatican City, Apr 23, 2021 / 12:00 pm America/Denver (CNA).

The Vatican’s doctrinal office will hold a study day April 27 on the theme of the dissolution of marriage “in favorem fidei.”

The study day marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of the instruction Potestas Ecclesiae, which regulated the dissolution of a marriage between two non-Catholic persons, when at least one is not baptized, to allow for the contraction or validation of a Catholic sacramental marriage in the future.

The dissolution of a marriage “in favorem fidei” (in favor of the faith), can be approved on a case-by-case basis and only by the pope. In this way, it differs from what is called the “Pauline privilege,” when the Church recognizes the automatic dissolution of a natural marriage between two non-baptized persons.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has organized the study day in partnership with the Pontifical Lateran University; the event is intended for Catholic university students, scholars, and those working in diocesan curias.

Attendance will be possible both in-person and online. The morning of April 27 will be dedicated to studying the theological-juridical aspect of Potestas Ecclesiae; in the afternoon participants will break into moderated small groups to look at practical cases related to the instruction.
