Pope at General Audience: ‘Jesus is with us at all times although we may not know it'
12 May 2021, 10:20

Pope Francis continues his cycle of catechesis dedicated to Christian prayer during the weekly General Audience reflecting on how prayer is sometimes hard and on how many great Christian figures struggled to overcome discouragement and crisis in times of trial.
By Linda Bordoni

“Christian prayer, like all Christian life, is not a walk in the park,” Pope Francis told the faithful following the Wednesday General Audience through the media and in the Vatican’s Courtyard of St. Damasus. He pointed out that so many of the “great praying people we meet in the Bible and the history of the Church did not have a comfortable prayer,” but encouraged us to never forget that Jesus is always with us.

Continuing a cycle of reflections dedicated to Christian prayer, the Pope focused on the theme of “spiritual struggle” and on how the great masters of Christian history recognize that prayer is not always easy, for our human nature.

Cardinal Ladaria to US Bishops: Debate on Communion and abortion should not lead to division
12 May 2021, 11:58

Cardinal Luis Ladaria, Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, writes to US Bishops urging them to preserve unity amid discussions on pro-life issues. He notes that it would be misleading if the impression were given that abortion and euthanasia alone constitute the only grave matters of Catholic moral and social teaching.
By Vatican News staff writer

The Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Luis F. Ladaria, SJ., has sent a letter to the president of the US Bishops Conference, Archbishop José Gomez, concerning moves by the conference to formulate a national policy regarding admission to Communion for Catholics in public office who support legislation permitting abortion, euthanasia or other moral evils.

Cardinal Ladaria’s letter dated 7 May, comes in response to a letter from Archbishop Gomez in March, informing the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) that the US Bishops were preparing to draft a document following some controversy related to US President Joe Biden and some of the policies of his administration.

German foreign minister welcomes day of same-sex blessings ahead of papal audience
CNA Staff, May 12, 2021 / 09:00 am America/Denver (CNA).

Ahead of an audience with Pope Francis on Wednesday, Germany’s foreign minister welcomed a day of same-sex blessings held in defiance of the Vatican.

Speaking before he met with the pope on May 12, Heiko Maas backed the blessing ceremonies held in around 80 German cities on Monday in protest at the Vatican’s “no” to same-sex blessings.

“At least I see that there is a great deal of openness in parts of the Catholic Church to social developments that one cannot ignore,” he said, according to the newspaper Die Welt.

“I very much welcome the fact that these discussions are being initiated again and conducted in more depth.”

Talking to reporters after his private audience with the pope, Maas said that the two men discussed the coronavirus pandemic, the future of Europe, violence in Jerusalem, Latin America, and the clerical abuse crisis.

The 54-year-old member of Germany’s Social Democratic Party is a baptized Catholic who was an altar server in his youth.

German media reported that he was the first German foreign minister in almost 20 years to secure a private papal audience.

The audience took place just two days after a nationwide protest against the Vatican’s declaration that the Church does not have the power to bless same-sex unions.

Holy See launching 3 webinars ahead of UN Food Systems Summit
12 May 2021, 16:24

In Autumn this year, the United Nations will convene a Food Systems Summit to raise global awareness and coordinate initiatives aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 2 of Zero Hunger (SDG2), by 2030.
By Lisa Zengarini

In view of the UN's Food Systems Summit in the context of the implementation of the UN’s 2030 Agenda and of the Covid-19 crisis, the Holy See is launching a three-part webinar series entitled “Food for Life, Food Justice, Food for All

The first webinar during Laudato si' Week

The series is organized by the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, the Vatican’s Permanent Mission to FAO, IFAD & WFP, the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and the Vatican COVID-19 Commission alongside its partners working in food security and will kick off on May 17 ‘Laudato si’ Week’ (May 16th - 24th).

Integral ecology to transform food systems

Inspired by Pope Francis’ Encyclical letter on care for our common home, the three online seminars will showcase how an integral ecology - a paradigm that considers the interconnections, among others, between social systems and ecosystems - can inspire the regeneration of food systems in the post-Covid future. They will highlight how Church and other actors can contribute to this transformation of food systems towards the care for our common home, the eradication of hunger, the respect of human dignity and the service of the common good, so that no one is left behind.

Italian broker for Vatican’s London property arrested in UK
By Hannah Brockhaus

Rome Newsroom, May 12, 2021 / 03:30 am America/Denver (CNA).

Gianluigi Torzi, the Italian businessman who brokered the final part of the Secretariat of State’s purchase of a London investment property, has been arrested in the United Kingdom.

The arrest, which took place May 11 in London, was requested by an Italian judge in Rome in April.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Service said: “Officers from the National Extradition Unit attended an address on Campden Hill Road, W8, on Tuesday, May 11.”

“Gianluigi Torzi, 42 (16.01.79), was identified and arrested on a Trade and Cooperation Act (TACA) warrant issued in Italy on Wednesday, May 5 and certified by the National Crime Agency on Thursday, May 6.”

“He is accused in Italy of money laundering and fraud offenses.”

“Mr. Torzi appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court for an initial extradition hearing where he was remanded in custody. His next appearance is on Tuesday, May 18.”

Torzi, who has denied wrongdoing, is being investigated by Italian authorities for suspected fraudulent billing, money laundering, and other financial crimes in collaboration with three of his associates.

He is also under investigation by the Vatican for his role in facilitating the Secretariat of State’s purchase of a London property on 60 Sloane Avenue in 2018. The Vatican alleges that in doing so, Torzi was part of a conspiracy to defraud the secretariat of millions of euros.

Cardinals Cupich and Tobin Met With CDF Prefect in Late April

Sources have told the Register that the two cardinals met with Cardinal Luis Ladaria shortly before the CDF sent a letter to the US bishops on pro-abortion politicians receiving the Eucharist.
May 12, 2021

VAICAN CITY — Cardinals Blase Cupich and Joseph Tobin met with the prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican just days before the congregation’s prefect sent a letter urging the U.S. bishops to fulfill a set of conditions before implementing a plan regarding pro-abortion Catholic politicians receiving Holy Communion.

The Register has confirmed through Vatican sources that the two cardinals, both of whom oppose stricter rules on the issue, visited the Vatican mid-morning on April 30, during which they met with CDF prefect Cardinal Luis Ladaria.

Cardinal Cupich, of Chicago, and Cardinal Tobin, of Newark, New Jersey, returned to the United States on May 1, the sources said. Both are members of the Congregation for Bishops but they did not visit the dicastery, a congregation official told the Register.

The Holy See Press Office was contacted for confirmation of their Rome visit. It did not respond by publication time but the meeting was confirmed by two other Vatican sources.

Their trip took place a week before Cardinal Ladaria sent a letter dated May 7 to Archbishop Jose Gomez, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, in which he urged a number of steps be taken before the bishops rule on a national policy regarding Communion for pro-abortion Catholic politicians.

Cardinal Ladaria’s letter responded to the USCCB’s plans to vote on whether to draft a document clarifying the bishops’ position on the issue by formulating a national policy at their annual general assembly in June. U.S. bishops remain divided over such a policy, which has come to the fore with the election of Catholic President Joe Biden, who has driven through a raft of pro-abortion policies.

Pope Francis: 'A society that does not welcome life stops living'
14 May 2021, 11:40

Pope Francis highlights the importance of solidarity, improving the birth rate, protecting the family, and generational sustainability, in his address at a meeting on the “General States of Birth” in Italy.
By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis opened the meeting on the “General States of Birth”, which held on Friday at the Auditorium della Conciliazione, close to the Vatican.

The initiative, organized by the “Forum for Family Associations”, aims to explore the demographic crisis in Italy, which has been further brought to the fore by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic that has resulted in increasing levels of poverty among families. The meeting gathered experts and high-level Italian officials, including Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

In his speech, Pope Francis applauded the initiative, stressing that it is essential to get Italy moving again, “starting with life and with the human being.”

Pope urges French scouts to be dynamic Christians, faithful scouts
14 May 2021, 12:00

Pope Francis addresses the Scouts Unitaires de France on the occasion of their 50th anniversary, and encourages them to help rebuild a culture of community after the pandemic.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis opened his speech to members of the French Scouts Unitaires on Friday by thanking the Council for this initiative "which recognises you, the young scouts, as protagonists in evangelisation and in the construction of society."

The scouts are in Rome celebrating their 50th anniversary.

Scouts: a sign of encouragement

The Pope went on to note that "in society, we find all too often a degradation of human relations and a lack of trustworthy models for young people in search of formation." This situation, he said, is made even more precarious by the current health crisis.

Faced with all these difficulties, the Pope noted that "your Scout movement is a sign of encouragement to young people, because it invites them to dream and to act, to have the courage to look to the future with hope."

Pope: child abuse is a kind of "psychological murder"
15 May 2021, 12:40

Pope Francis on Saturday met a delegation from the Meter Association, which fights abuse of children, especially online.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis on Saturday urged families, educational and public institutions to tackle with renewed determination the scourge of child abuse, paedophilia and child pornography, describing them as "psychological murder".  “Continue your work without hesitation, paying particular attention to the educational aspect, in order to form a firm conscience in people and eradicate the culture of abuse and exploitation,” the Pope told some 50 members of the Meter Association.  The group founded in Sicily, Italy, in 1989 by Father Fortunato Di Noto, has been championing the rights of children especially against child pornography and paedophilia.

Pope Francis on Myanmar: May God convert all hearts to peace
16 May 2021, 11:45

Pope Francis presides over a special Mass for Myanmar Catholics living in Rome and joins them in prayers for peace.
By Vatican News staff writer

As an expression of the Church’s closeness to the suffering people of Myanmar, Pope Francis joined Burmese Catholics for the celebration of Mass on Sunday. Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands injured in the three and half months of violence following a coup in February overthrew the nation's elected civilian government.

The Mass for the Seventh Sunday of Easter took place at the Altar of the Chair in Saint Peter’s Basilica.

Recalling the Gospel reading for the celebration when Jesus prays for His friends as He prepares to take leave of His disciples and the world, the Pope said this passage teaches us how to deal with “dramatic and painful moments” in our own lives. In praying to the Father, the Lord uses the world “keep,” the Pope noted. As Myanmar experiences “violence, conflict and repression,” he said, we need to ask what are we being called to keep.

Jesus’ Ascension brings us joy says Pope Francis at Regina Coeli
16 May 2021, 12:46

At the Regina Coeli on Sunday, Pope Francis says Jesus' Ascension into heaven as true God and true man and His promise of the Holy Spirit, are causes of joy
By Christopher Wells

There are none of the usual feeling of loss or abandonment among the disciples when Jesus ascended in the Heaven, said Pope Francis at Sunday’s Regina Coeli. Instead, “despite their separation from the Lord, they do not appear grief-stricken, but rather, are joyful and ready to go into the world as missionaries.”

“Why are the disciples not sad?” the Pope asked. “Why should we too rejoice at seeing Jesus ascend into Heaven?” His answer: “The Ascension completes Jesus’ mission among us.”

In Italy, as in many countries throughout the world, the solemnity of the Ascension is observed liturgically on the sixth Sunday after Easter. “After descending into our humanity and redeeming it, now Jesus ascends to heaven, taking our flesh with Him,” the Pope said. Jesus is the first human being to enter Heaven, precisely because He is both true God and true man. “Our flesh is in heaven,” the Pope exclaimed, “and this gives us joy!”

His Ascension is not “an abandonment," because Jesus "remains forever with the disciples, with us” in prayer. Jesus shows the Father the wounds “with which He redeemed us,” — and this, the Pope said, “should give us security, and even joy, great joy!”

Pope Francis meets with Iran’s foreign minister, speaks to Turkish president about Palestinians
By Courtney Mares

Vatican City, May 17, 2021 / 10:30 am America/Denver (CNA).

Pope Francis spoke Monday with Iran’s foreign minister and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan amid the ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the violence in the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The pope received Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s head diplomat since 2013, for a private audience on May 17 in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace.

Zarif said that he and the pope “exchanged views” on Palestine, interfaith dialogue, and U.S. sanctions in a post on Twitter.

The Iranian government delegation also met with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Secretary for Relations with States.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed that Pope Francis also spoke on the telephone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the morning of May 17.

According to a statement from the Turkish president’s office, Erdogan told Pope Francis “that Palestinians would continue to be subjected to massacre as long as the international community did not punish Israel - which is committing humanitarian crimes - with sanctions.”

The Vatican did not comment on the content of the discussions in either the phone call with Erdogan or the meeting with Zarif.
