04 September 2021, 12:14

On the eve of the start of the International Eucharistic Congress in Budapest, Hungary, Cardinal Péter Erdő describes the joining of leaders of different Churches, along with the visit of Pope Francis, as a sign of hope for the unity of the Church.
By Francesca Merlo

"The arrival of the Holy Father will be a great sign of hope, even after a year and a half of pandemic," Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and primate of the Catholic Church of Hungary, told Vatican News, as the Hungarian Church and the people of the country await the arrival of Pope Francis.

The event

Pope Francis will be in Budapest, Hungary on 12 September for the closure of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress, which will bring together representatives of all the world's Churches, including those from countries in conflict. Papal Foundation's new executive director hopes to expand philanthropic giving
By Autumn Jones
Philadelphia, Pa., Sep 4, 2021 / 06:00 am

The Papal Foundation recently named David Savage to the role of executive director. Savage, who has a background in marketing and nonprofit leadership, will be responsible for addressing Pope Francis’ priorities for relief, education, and services for vulnerable and underserved communities around the world.

“As Catholics we’re called to love our neighbor, and that means all people, whether they are Catholic or not, and whether they are next door, or half-way around the world,” said Savage, who has 25 years of executive experience in direct-to-consumer marketing. “What I love about our Church is that we are universal. And what I love about The Papal Foundation is that its reach is global. So we are united with those on every continent.”

The Papal Foundation, founded in 1988, awards grants and scholarships for initiatives such as shelter for homeless adults and children; support for hospitals and health facilities; seminaries and scholarships to prepare future leaders; relief for victims of natural disasters; services for refugees and immigrants; pro-life programs and education; and care for aging priests and religious. Since its inception more than 30 years ago, the organization has awarded more than $190 million in 121 countries.

“As Americans, we are some of the most financially blessed humans on the planet, we have a special responsibility to help those in need and to help build up the Church all around the world,” Savage said.

Savage’s previous experience will “greatly benefit our organization,” said Sean Cardinal O’Malley of Boston, chairman of The Papal Foundation Board of Trustees, in a release. Cardinal O’Malley also said he is happy to have Savage at the helm to “build the resources that the Foundation deploys to care for the needy in developing nations around the globe.”

Pope at Angelus: Healing of the heart begins with listening
05 September 2021, 12:25

In his reflections before leading the recitation of the Angelus, Pope Francis recalls in today's Gospel when Jesus restores the hearing and speech of the deaf man. He says we can ask Jesus to touch and heal our own interior deafness, since the healing of the heart begins with being able to listen.
By Vatican News staff writer

Recalling the today’s Gospel reading which presents Jesus who heals a deaf man with a speech impediment, Pope Francis observed the many actions Jesus took in healing him: putting his finger into the man’s ears, touching his tong with saliva and looking up to heaven and then saying to him “Ephphatha”, that is, “Be opened!”. Perhaps, the Pope suggested, it was because the man’s condition of deafness had a special symbolic value and can say something to all of us, since we all have ears, but “very often we are not able to hear”.

'Our Common Mission': a regional meeting on the protection of minors
06 September 2021, 14:21

Since early 2017, Professor Hanna Suchocka and other Members of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors have been organizing a regional meeting on the protection of minors for Central and Eastern Europe to be held in Warsaw in September. She recounts how this conference came about.
By Professor Hanna Suchocka

The Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors (PCPM) was established in 2014 as an advisory body at the service of the Holy Father. The mission entrusted to the PCPM is “to propose initiatives to the Roman Pontiff…for the purposes of promoting local responsibility in the particular Churches for the protection of all minors and vulnerable adults” (Statutes, Art. 1). The PCPM’s main concern from the start was how to find the best way to protect children and how to help the Pope and the Church achieve this goal. Its role, however, is not to take any responsibility for individual cases of abuse (which is the competence of a prosecutorial body or a court).

Vatican hosts screening of film that invented papal soundbite on civil unions
By Elise Ann Allen
Sep 6, 2021

ROME – Nearly a year after a Vatican media fiasco involving snippets of commentary by Pope Francis spliced together in a high-profile documentary to create a soundbite endorsing same-sex civil unions, the Vatican is now screening that same documentary for a group of migrants and refugees.

On Monday, Francesco, produced by Russian Jewish filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky, will be shown in the Vatican’s new synod hall for a group of 130 migrant and refugee families.

While hosting the poor and less fortunate for special VIP events inside Vatican walls has become a hallmark of Francis’s papacy, news of the screening caused a collective raising of eyebrows for those who remember the contretemps that unfolded shortly after the film’s release last year.

Released in late October 2020, the documentary includes a 20-second clip Afineevsky claimed came from fresh interviews conducted with the pope specifically for the film in which Francis said that homosexual individuals “have the right to be in a family. They are children of God.”

“You can’t kick someone out of a family, nor make their life miserable for this. What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered,” the pope is heard saying in the clip.

Immediately after the film went public, the comments made headlines around the world, with papers everywhere announcing that Pope Francis had become the first pope in history to endorse same-sex civil unions.

Yet in the days after the documentary’s release, doubt began to arise among the Vatican press corps as to the actual origins of the interview.

It was eventually established that the pope’s remarks were not made in a new interview given for the Francesco film, as Afineevsky had claimed, but taken from an interview the pope had given to Mexican journalist Valentina Alazraki in 2019 and spliced together in a way that seemed like Francis was pushing for same-sex civil unions.

52nd International Eucharistic Congress -- Budapest, Hungary -- Sept. 5-12

52nd International Eucharistic Congress begins in Budapest
06 September 2021, 11:30

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco invites the whole Church to reflect on the theme of the International Eucharistic Congress: “All my springs are in You” during the homily at the opening Mass for the occasion. He notes that the Eucharist “goes beyond all loneliness, all distance and all indifference.” Pope Francis will celebrate the closing Mass of the Congress on 12 September.
By Benedetta Capelli

"May the Lord God grant us to the capacity to feel in these days that Christ is with us in the Eucharist. He does not leave the Church, people and humanity alone".

Cardinal Péter Erdő, Primate of Hungary, pronounced these heartfelt words at the beginning of the Mass in Budapest that opened the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress, which had to be postponed from last year due to the pandemic.

The Cardinal also extended his greetings to the representatives of Eastern Christians with whom he works and prayed “to build Christian unity” so that “our witness may be credible.”

Metropolitan Hilarion: Catholics, Eastern Orthodox are united in belief in Christ’s Real Presence
By CNA Staff
Budapest, Hungary, Sep 6, 2021 / 04:25 am

A Russian Orthodox leader said on Monday that belief in Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist unites Catholics and Eastern Orthodox believers despite their divisions.

Delivering the opening catechesis at the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress in Budapest, Hungary, on Sept. 6, Metropolitan Hilarion outlined the Eastern Orthodox understanding of the Eucharist.

“The Catholics and the Orthodox are not united in the Eucharist, but they are united in the conviction that in the Eucharistic bread and wine after their consecration we have not just the symbolic presence of Christ, but his full and real presence,” said the chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate.

“We believe that the bread and wine of the Eucharist are the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Eucharistic celebration is not only a commemoration of the Last Supper, but also its actualization for each believer who participates in it.”

“And the celebrant does not act in the Eucharist on his own behalf. It is on behalf of Jesus Christ himself that he pronounces the words originally uttered by Christ at his Last Supper. And it is Christ himself who administers the sacrament for his followers, not a priest or a bishop.”

Pope and ecumenical leaders: Caring for God’s creation requires commitment
07 September 2021, 14:00

In a joint message for the 2021 Season of Creation, Pope Francis, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, and Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury stress the importance of cooperation and valuing sustainability over short-term advantages as essential parts of our common response to the threat of climate change and environmental degradation.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

“For more than a year, we have all experienced the devastating effects of a global pandemic—all of us, whether poor or wealthy, weak or strong. Some were more protected or vulnerable than others, but the rapidly-spreading infection meant that we have depended on each other in our efforts to stay safe.”

These observations begin the “Joint Message for the Protection of Creation” issued on 1 September by Pope Francis, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, and Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury.

The religious leaders note that in facing this worldwide calamity, “no one is safe until everyone is safe,” because “our actions really do affect one another,” and “what we do today affects what happens tomorrow.”

Choose life

The joint message comes in the midst of the 2021 Season of Creation running from 1 September through 4 October, which presents “an opportunity to pray and care for God’s creation.” It also comes as world leaders prepare to meet at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), scheduled to take place in November, in Glasgow, Scotland, to deliberate on the future of our planet.

First Communion given to 1,200 children as part of Eucharistic Congress
06 September 2021, 18:09

As Hungary hosts the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress in Budapest, hundreds of children have made their First Communion, while thousands of Catholics throughout the world take part in the event which Pope Francis will conclude on Sunday.
By Stefan J. Bos – Budapest, Hungary

At Budapest's majestic Heroes Square, some 1,200 Children received their First Communion. They are among the youngest pilgrims participating in the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress in Hungary.

It's seen as a hopeful sign for a nation where the Church is still recovering from decades of Communist rule, during which Christian education for children was discouraged or forbidden.

Organizers described the Mass and other events during the Congress as "a celebration of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist."

Pope at Audience: Equality in Christ overcomes our differences
08 September 2021, 09:40

At the General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis highlights the equality of all Christians in Christ, noting that anyone who accepts Christ in faith has “put on” Christ and His filial dignity through baptism.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Continuing his catechesis on the Letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians during the General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis noted the apostle’s insistence to Christians not to forget the novelty of God’s revelation that had been proclaimed to them.

The Pope reflected on St. Paul’s emphasis on faith in Jesus which has allowed us to truly become children of God and His heirs. Therefore, Christians are to remember with gratitude the moment we became such - the moment of our baptism - “so as to live the great gift we have received with greater awareness.”

Pope Francis sends 15,000 ice creams to Rome prisoners
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Sep 8, 2021 / 07:00 am

Pope Francis sent 15,000 ice creams to prisoners in Rome as the Eternal City sweltered in the summer heat, the Vatican announced on Tuesday.

The gelati were taken to the Regina Coeli and Rebibbia prisons by the papal almoner Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Office of Papal Charities said in a Sept. 7 press release.

The Vatican department that performs charitable acts on behalf of the pope said that in the summer months it sought to make “small evangelical gestures to help and give hope to thousands of people in Rome’s prisons.”

The office explained that it focused on undertaking corporal works of mercy during the summer, when canteens and charities in Rome are forced to limit their activities.

Burma’s Cardinal Bo: Jesus waits patiently for us in the Eucharist
Rome Newsroom, Sep 8, 2021 / 09:30 am

Burma’s Cardinal Charles Maung Bo told Catholics at the International Eucharistic Congress on Wednesday that it was important to imitate Jesus’ patience amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Look at our world and our lives. The modern man lives in a feverish pitch. He is in a tearing hurry. He is rushing all the time. He is restless. He wants to acquire more, consume more,” Bo said Sept. 8.

“He is not content. He abhors silence. He cannot wait. Speed, speed is the number one value today. Being slow is considered a vice, a waste of time.”

“But Jesus waits. He came to us because he loves us.”

Bo spoke for about an hour on “the Divine Patience in the Eucharist” on the third day of catechesis at the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress in Budapest.

Masses were offered at several churches in Budapest as a part of the congress program on Wednesday.

Cardinal Robert Sarah, the former prefect of the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, was due to offer a Mass at the Church of the Holy Angels in Gazdagrét and a Byzantine Divine Liturgy was celebrated at St. Stephen’s Basilica.

“I strongly feel this Eucharistic Congress is the starting point of global healing,” Cardinal Bo said in his catechesis.

Pope to Claretians: Go forth to be close to the people
09 September 2021, 12:30

Pope Francis addresses members of the Claretian order and urges them to go out to the people, to be close to them in their mission, and to never forget that their only real security is in Christ.
By Francesca Merlo

Addressing Claretians, who are in Rome for their General Chapter, Pope Francis noted that the theme of their meeting - "Rooted and Bold" - "presupposes a life of prayer and contemplation that allows you to contemplate the Mirror, which is Christ, so that you yourselves may become mirrors for others".
