Pope receives in audience outgoing German Chancellor Merkel
07 October 2021, 14:31

Angela Merkel paid a visit to Pope Francis in the Vatican during her farewell visit to Rome. The German leader will step down after a new government is formed following the recent election.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is on her farewell visit to the Italian capital Rome, was received in a private audience in the Vatican Thursday morning, the Holy See Press Office said. Later, she met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, along with Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

Focus on pandemic and migration

“During the cordial discussions, appreciation was expressed for the good existing bilateral relations and the fruitful collaboration between the Holy See and Germany,” the Press Office said in a communique.

The two sides then reviewed “matters of mutual interest in the international and regional spheres, agreeing on the advisability of relaunching cooperation to address the multiple crises underway, with particular reference to the consequences of the health emergency and migration”.

Pope: Environmental studies are beneficial to all
07 October 2021, 10:36

Pope Francis addresses a letter to the Pontifical Lateran University of Rome with regards to the implementation of university's new course on ecology and the environment.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis has penned a letter to Cardinal Angelo de Donatis, Grand Chancellor of Rome's Pontifical Lateran University, on the establishment of a cycle of studies in Ecology and the Environment: Care of our Common Home and Protection of Creation, Pope Francis noted that in being called to educate in responsibility towards the gifts of creation, "the Church also fulfils her commitment in forming the true meaning of every action aimed at preserving, protecting and guaranteeing life on and of the earth".

In this regard, wrote the Pope, believers and non-believers alike, "have a duty not only to ensure abstract sustainability or to proclaim the good of future generations but to provide the means to safeguard the various ecosystems and their components, knowing that we cannot dispose of them without measure". A lack of ecological awareness has serious repercussions, continued the Pope, "not only on the environment but also on human relations and social life, feeding a culture of waste that primarily means exclusion, poverty, inequality, forced displacement of populations and failure to meet basic needs".

Pope Francis to declare St. Irenaeus a Doctor of the Church with title ‘Doctor of Unity’
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Oct 7, 2021 / 06:50 am

Pope Francis said on Thursday that he plans to declare St. Irenaeus of Lyon a Doctor of the Church with the title “Doctor unitatis,” meaning “Doctor of Unity.”

The pope made the announcement in a speech to the St. Irenaeus Working Group, a group of Catholic and Orthodox theologians who conducted a study together on synodality and primacy.

“Your patron, St. Irenaeus of Lyon -- whom soon I will willingly declare a Doctor of the Church with the title Doctor unitatis -- came from the East, exercised his episcopal ministry in the West, and was a great spiritual and theological bridge between Eastern and Western Christians,” Pope Francis said on Oct. 7.

Pope prays for peace with faith leaders: ‘Demilitarize our hearts!’
07 October 2021, 17:47

Pope Francis attends an International Meeting for Peace with leaders of various religions and confessions at Rome's Colosseum, and urges everyone to work toward purifying our hearts so that peace might fill our world.
By Devin Watkins

The St. Egidio Community has held a two-day peace meeting in Rome which was attended by numerous faith leaders from across the globe.

The 35th International Meeting for Peace concluded on Thursday evening with a prayer for peace at the Colosseum, which was attended by Pope Francis.

Held under the theme, "Peoples as Brothers, Future Earth", the event saw the participation of religious leaders from Christianity, Islam, Hebraism, Buddhism, Tenrikyo, Hinduism, and Sikhism.

New beginning

Participants from over 40 countries met to discuss how to “start again” in the “spirit of Assisi”, which is one of friendship and dialogue.

The president of the St. Egidio Community, Marco Impagliazzo, called on everyone not to waste the opportunity presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. “May it become a new beginning, and not just a moment of degradation which separates us one from another,” he said in a video message opening the Peace Meeting.

Demilitarize human heart

Pope Francis wrapped up the Prayer for Peace meeting at the Colosseum which was attended by hundreds of people from various faith traditions.

Ahead of a moment of silence for the victims of all wars, the Pope offered the concluding address for the event, asking God to “demilitarize the human heart.”

He opened his address praising the many people who traveled to Rome this week to show that prayer is a “quiet source of strength which brings peace and disarms hate-filled hearts.”

Vatican finance trial update:   Cardinal Becciu

Vatican finance trial: Judges order prosecutors to re-do interrogations, hand over evidence
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Oct 6, 2021 / 09:00 am

Judges in the Vatican finance trial ruled on Wednesday that the prosecution’s office needs to hand over missing evidence to the defense, while also re-doing a part of the investigation into seven of the 10 defendants, including Cardinal Angelo Becciu.

The Vatican tribunal also asked the prosecutor to clarify Msgr. Alberto Perlasca’s position in the case and to communicate whether he is accused of any crimes.

Perlasca was Becciu’s former chief deputy at the Vatican’s Secretariat of State. In that position, he signed off on aspects of the 350 million-euro London real estate purchase at the center of the historic trial.

Originally a suspect in the Vatican’s investigations, Perlasca was never indicted and is a star witness for the prosecution after volunteering information without the presence of a lawyer

Judges sided on Wednesday with arguments by defense attorneys, ordering Vatican deputy promoter of justice Alessandro Diddi to make evidence available to the defense, including video recordings of four interviews with Perlasca.

The footage and other forensic evidence are due to be handed over by Nov. 3, but attorneys can request to see it and have a copy from today. The court is scheduled to reconvene for the next hearing on Nov. 17.

Pope marks German edition of L’Osservatore Romano on 50 years
08 October 2021, 12:00

The German weekly edition of the Vatican's newspaper L’Osservatore Romano was started in 1971 with the blessing of Pope Paul VI.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis has felicitated the weekly German-language edition of the Holy See’s newspaper L’Osservatore Romano (Italian for The Roman *******),  for its 5 decades of service in “edifying” its readers with an inside look into the Church of Rome and the world.  “With affection, I have taken note of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the weekly edition of L'Osservatore Romano which is being celebrated in these days. I gladly accompany the collaborators, as well as the German-speaking readers, with my prayers.” the Pope wrote in a brief letter to the newspaper.

Edifying readers

“For half a century,” he noted, “the newspaper has been edifying its customers week by week with a look inside the events of the Church of Rome and that of the world; it reports on the Word of the Successor of Peter and provides a rich variety of cultural contributions.” All this, Pope Francis said, makes it possible for the faithful of local Churches to know the Universal Church better.  He concluded imparting his apostolic blessing on all those contributing to “this service of mediation” and to all its readers.

President Biden's pick for Vatican ambassador: former Sen. Joe Donnelly
By Kevin J. Jones
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Oct 8, 2021 / 15:04 pm

Former U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana is President Joe Biden’s nominee for U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, the White House announced on Friday.

Donnelly is a Catholic and a former professor at the University of Notre Dame, where he received his undergraduate degree and his law degree. He served in the U.S. Senate from 2013 to 2019, leaving office after he lost the 2018 election to Republican challenger Mike Braun. He represented Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District from 2007 to 2013, during which time he voted against funding embryonic stem cell research and was a strong foe of abortion funding in the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

In the Senate he reversed his position against federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions.

Donnelly is currently a partner at Akin Gump law firm in Washington, D.C. He is chairman of the board at the New York-based Soufan Center, a non-profit think tank whose work on global security and foreign policy focuses on counter-terrorism, violent extremism and armed conflict.

He is an advisor to multiple corporations. The White House noted that his honors include the U.S. Navy Distinguished Service Medal.

Pope Francis and Nancy Pelosi meet at the Vatican
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Oct 9, 2021 / 05:20 am

Pope Francis met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Saturday.

At the time of publication, the Vatican had released no information about what the pope and Pelosi discussed, in line with its usual custom for papal meetings with non-heads of state.

But it noted the audience in its daily bulletin for Oct. 9, saying that the House Speaker was accompanied by her husband, the businessman Paul Pelosi, and entourage.

Photographs released by the Vatican showed that Pelosi also met with Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and “foreign minister” Archbishop Paul Gallagher.

Pope to pre-COP26 meeting: You owe your best efforts to future generations
09 October 2021, 12:03

Pope Francis reiterates the need for genuine ecological conversion and an inclusive model of development in an address to participants at a preparatory meeting for the upcoming COP26 Climate Change Conference.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis received participants of the 2-day pre COP26 parliamentary meeting co-organised by the Italian Parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), in the Vatican's Paul VI Hall on Saturday morning as it concluded in Rome, and encouraged them to work for the common good and for the future of the next generations. The meeting's aim was to set the floor for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference, hosted by Italy and the UK and scheduled to run in Glasgow from 1 to 12 November.

COP26 will bring together leaders from across the globe to advance climate action and promote implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement, the world’s major legally-binding international treaty on climate change. Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin is scheduled to participate as are many faith-based groups and religious leaders.

In his address, Pope Francis recalled having just signed a Joint Appeal, together with various religious leaders and scientists in view of the Summit. That document, he said, is the result of months of intense dialogue, and the Appeal is based on the “awareness of the unprecedented challenges that threaten us and life on our beautiful common home… and the necessity of an even deeper solidarity in the face of the global pandemic and of the growing concern” in that regard.

Pope on Synod: The participation of everyone, guided by the Holy Spirit
09 October 2021, 10:56

Pope Francis leads a moment of reflection in the Vatican, ahead of the solemn inauguration of the Synod on Sunday with a Holy Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.
By Robin Gomes

As the Universal Church is about to embark on the synodal journey, Pope Francis on Saturday invoked the Holy Spirit on the People of God so that they will be able to move forward together, to listen to one another and discern our times, in solidarity with the struggles and aspirations of all humanity.

The Pope prayed as he presided over a moment of reflection in the Vatican’s Synod Hall, on the eve the official inauguration of the diocesan phase of the Synod for all the dioceses around the world, marked by a solemn Mass in Rome’s St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, Oct. 10. Dioceses across the world will inaugurate the synodal journey at the local level on Oct. 17.

A special Synod

The theme of the upcoming 16th Synod of Bishops is: “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission”.  Synodality indicates walking together and listening to one another but above all to the Holy Spirit.  To deepen this essential characteristic of the Church, the upcoming synod is unlike any previous one.  It starts with, and involves all the faithful at local Churches across the world, promising to listen to all, especially to laypeople. That is why this Synod is a 2-year process, starting from October 10, 2021, to October 2023.

The diocesan listening phase will run until April 2022 and will be followed by a continental phase from September 2022 to March 2023.  The final “universal Church phase” will culminate in the traditional assembly of the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican in October 2023.

Nancy Pelosi leaves Mass in Rome due to security concerns
By CNA Staff
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Oct 10, 2021 / 09:19 am

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband left Mass at a church in Rome Saturday evening due to a “security incident,” the church’s rector said.

“You probably heard or saw the commotion. Unfortunately, I guess, there was a security incident and sadly Speaker Pelosi and her husband had to leave,” Fr. Steven Petroff, rector of St. Patrick’s Church in Rome, said in a video posted on social media.

“She was going to do our second reading today, but of course her safety is most important,” he said.

Veteran Rome journalist Joan Lewis told CNA Sunday that she had spoken to Petroff, who told her that the security concerns stemmed from restive demonstrations going on in the streets of Rome Saturday that were moving into the area where St. Patrick’s is located around the time of the 6 p.m. Mass.

Pope: Celebrating Synod means walking together on the same road
10 October 2021, 10:45

Pope Francis celebrated Mass at St Peter’s Basilica for the solemn opening of the Synod of Bishops, which will take place in three stages over the next two years.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis formally opened the Synod of Bishops on Sunday with a solemn Mass in St Peter’s Basilica.

Faithful from around the world – including laymen and -women, priests, seminarians, women and men religious, cardinals and bishops – took part in the liturgy, which marked the beginning of a two-year synodal process.

In his homily, Pope Francis took the day’s Gospel reading, recounting Jesus’ encounter with a rich young man, as the starting point for a reflection on synodality: “Celebrating a Synod,” he said, “means walking on the same road, together.”

Following the example of Jesus, he emphasized three verbs that characterize the Synod: encounter, listen, and discern.

Pope at Angelus: Salvation is a gift, not a bargaining chip
10 October 2021, 11:01

Pope Francis tells the faithful that Christian life is a gift, based not on our abilities and our plans, but on God’s loving gaze.
By Linda Bordoni

Reflecting on the Gospel readings of the day, Pope Francis invited all Christians to say “yes” to God and savour the beauty of making life a gift.

Speaking during the Sunday Angelus in St. Peter’s Square, he recollected the encounter between Jesus and a man who “had great possessions” (Mk 10:22), and who went down in history as “the rich young man,” and said that the Gospel of Mark suggests that we can all see ourselves in this man and that his encounter with Jesus allows us to test our faith.

Noting the man’s attitude that shows he lives his religiosity as a duty – something that needs doing in order to obtain salvation – the Pope explained that there is no commercial relationship with God based on a “must-do-obtain” ritual: “It is a question of freedom and love.”

“Here is a first test: what is faith for me? If it is mainly a duty or a bargaining chip, we are off track, because salvation is a gift and not a duty, it is free and cannot be bought,” he said.

Pope to Sisters of Charity: you are masters in walking the way of charity
11 October 2021, 11:54

Pope Francis addresses the Sisters of Charity on their 21st General Chapter and thanks them for their work in charity.
By Francesca Merlo

On the occasion of their 21st General Chapter, Pope Francis welcomed the Sisters of Charity in the Vatican on Monday. He opened his discourse to the sisters by welcoming their newly elected Superior General, and by wishing her "a serene and fruitful service".

The Pope noted that their visit coincides with the opening of the Synod and took advantage of this coincidence to point out that "the commitment we take on as a Church to grow in synodality is also a strong incentive for Institutes of Consecrated Life".

"I like to think that you consecrated women are an extension of the female presence that walked with Jesus and with the Twelve, sharing the mission and making your own particular contribution," the Pope said.

Pope Francis appoints Msgr Diego Ravelli as new Master of Pontifical Liturgical Ceremonies.
By Vatican News staff writer

The Holy Father has appointed the Most Reverend Diego Giovanni Ravelli as Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations and as head of the Pontifical Sistine Chapel Choir.

Curriculum vitae

Monsignor Diego Giovanni Ravelli was born on 1 November 1965 in Lazzate, Italy. He was ordained a priest for the Public Clerical Association Priests of Jesus Crucified in 1991, then incardinated in the diocese of Velletri-Segni. In 2000 he obtained a diploma in pedagogical methodology from the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome, and in 2010 a doctorate in sacred liturgy at the Liturgical Institute of the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm in Rome. From 2013 he has served as office head in the Office of Papal Charities, where he had held the role of official since 1998. After collaborating with the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff as Assistant Master of Ceremonies, he was appointed Papal Master of Ceremonies in 2006.

Msgr. Ravelli takes over the role of Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations from Monsignor Guido Marini, who earlier this year was appointed bishop of Tortona by Pope Francis.

New JPII Institute president: My stance on Humanae vitae was misinterpreted
By Solène Tadié
Rome, Italy, Oct 11, 2021 / 04:00 am

Msgr. Philippe Bordeyne, the new president of the John Paul II Pontifical Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences in Rome, officially took office on Sept. 22.

The 61-year-old French theologian’s appointment was made public on March 19 by Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, the institute’s grand chancellor, at the launch of the Amoris Laetitia Family Year.

Bordeyne, who specializes in moral theology, ecumenism, and the theological hermeneutics of Vatican II, succeeded Msgr. Pierangelo Sequeri, who led the institute since 2016.

Bordeyne had served as rector of the Institut Catholique de Paris (ICP) since 2011.

He is taking up his new post at a tumultuous time in the institute’s history.

Pope John Paul II founded the Pontifical Institute for Studies of Marriage and Family in 1982 with the apostolic constitution Magnum Matrimonii Sacramentum.

Explaining why he was taking the initiative, he wrote that it was now “necessary to found a primary institute of studies whose special concern it will be to promote the basic theological and pastoral study of marriage and the family for the good of the whole Church.”

The new institute was based at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.

In 2017, Pope Francis refounded the institute with the apostolic letter Summa familiae cura, issued motu proprio (“on his own impulse”).

He decreed that the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family would now be known as the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences.

Formerly homeless artist, now in Vatican palace, paints Christmas stamp
By Paulina Guzik

Christmas Vatican stamps are among the most recognizable postal stamps in the world. This year the Holy Family and the Magi featured on a special Yuletide francobollo (Italian for “stamp”) have a very special story behind them, as they were drawn by a painter-in-residence at a Vatican palace who was homeless just a year ago.

Adam Piekarski is a 42-year-old Pole living in Rome for 6 years now. He was sleeping on the streets until a Polish Redemptorist, Father Leszek Pyś, found out he paints.

“More than a year ago Pyś saw me drawing and asked me whether I could paint a portrait for their chapel, and that’s how it started,” Piekarski said.

The news quickly spread that Piekarski paintings are valuable pieces of art, and on April 19, 2021, Polish Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the pope’s point man for charitable activity, offered Piekarski a workshop in the attic of the Palazzo Migliore, a palace-turned-homeless-shelter just footsteps from Bernini’s famous colonnade at the Vatican.
