Pope: Christian freedom leads to welcoming people and cultures
13 October 2021, 07:59

Pope Francis says that, freed by grace and love, Christianity is able to welcome every people and culture, and in turn opens peoples and cultures to greater freedom.
By Christopher Wells

Christian freedom “does not enter into conflict with cultures or with the traditions we have received,” Pope Francis said at Wednesday’s General Audience, “but rather introduces into them a new freedom, a liberating novelty, that of the Gospel.”

Continuing his reflection on St Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, Pope Francis explained that Christians, freed from the slavery of sin and death by the passion and resurrection of Jesus, are able to welcome every people and culture, and in turn introduce peoples and cultures to even greater freedom.

Not everyone, however, welcomed the “novelty” of evangelical freedom, the Pope said. He noted that Paul’s detractors criticized him for “minimising the demands received from his narrower religious tradition.” He noted that Paul responded with “parrhesia,” insisting that he was not seeking to please men, but only to obey God.

Pope John Paul I on the road to sainthood
13 October 2021, 11:49

Pope Francis authorizes the promulgation of a Decree advancing the cause for the beatification of Pope John Paul I. The heroic virtues of other holy men and women were also recognized as were the martyrdoms of two Argentinean priests.
By Vatican News staff writer

The Church has recognised the miracle attributed to the Venerable Servant of God, Pope John Paul I (Albino Luciani), who was born on 17 October 1912 in the northern Italian town of Canale d’Agordo and who died on 28 September 1978 in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. He headed the Church from when he was elected Pope on 26 August 1978 until his death 33 days later.

At an audience for the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Pope Francis authorized the dicastery to promulgate the Decree advancing his cause, along with the causes of seven other Servants of God including the confirmation of another miracle and the recognition of martyrdom for Argentinean priests Fr. Pietro Ortiz de Zàrate and Fr. Giovanni Antonio Solinas, killed in odium Fidei (in hatred of the faith) on 27 October 1683 in Argentina's Valle del Zenta.

10 things you need to know about how Fatima's 'Miracle of the sun' ended an Atheist regime
By CNA Staff
Fatima, Portugal, Oct 13, 2021 / 09:15 am

October 13, 1917 marked the last Marian apparition in Fatima, and the day in which thousands of people bore witness of the miracle of the dancing sun; a miracle that not only proved the validity of the Fatima Marian apparitions, but also shattered the prevalent belief at the time that God was no longer relevant.

Dr. Marco Daniel Duarte, a theologian and director of the Fatima Shrine museums told CNA these 10 things we need to know about the impact of the miracle during those days in Portugal.

1) If one were to open philosophy books during that period, they would likely read something akin to the concept conceived by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who boldly asserted in the late 1800s that “God is dead.”

2) Also, in 1917, Portugal, like the majority of the world, was embroiled in war. As World War I raged throughout Europe, Portugal found itself unable to maintain its initial neutrality and joined forces with the Allies. More that 220,000 Portuguese civilians died during the war; thousands due to food shortages, thousands more from the Spanish flu.

He made the exhortation to some 150 representatives of the Italian Society of Hospital Pharmacy and of the Pharmaceutical Services of Health Authorities (SIFO) as they kick off their 42nd national congress in Rome, October 14-17.  They are deliberating on the theme, "The pharmacist promoter and interpreter of change, emergency, and planning."

Pope: ‘I will never tire of upholding the dignity of work’
14 October 2021, 14:30

Pope Francis sends a video message to an event in Argentina that aims to find sustainable solutions to business development safeguarding the dignity and rights of workers and their families.
By Linda Bordoni

“I would like to applaud the space for dialogue,” Pope Francis said in a message to Argentina’s IDEA Foundation and Union of Representation of Popular Economy, who are holding a 3-day colloquium to talk about how to find ways to safeguard business development and the dignity of all workers.

Expressing his hope that the event will prove to be “a moment of true exchange that can bring together the innovative contribution of entrepreneurs and workers who are fighting for their dignity and for their families," he reiterated his opinion that work and the respect for the creativity and gifts of all are at the basis of a society in which respect for human dignity is paramount.

White House confirms Oct. 29 meeting between Pope Francis, Joe Biden
By Matt Hadro
Washington D.C., Oct 14, 2021 / 09:02 am

The White House has confirmed that President Joe Biden and his wife Jill will meet with Pope Francis on Oct. 29 at the Vatican.

According to a Thursday statement by White House press secretary Jen Psaki, the Bidens will discuss several issues with the pope, including “ending the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling the climate crisis, and caring for the poor.”

The Oct. 29 event would mark the first meeting with the pope during Biden’s presidency. Biden, a Catholic, previously met with Pope Francis in 2016 as vice president. He spoke on the phone with Pope Francis on Nov. 12, 2020, where the pope congratulated him on his election as president.

Pope Francis has met with other top U.S. officials in-person this year. He met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, also a Catholic, on Oct. 9 at the Vatican during Pelosi’s international travels. According to the Speaker’s office, that discussion focused mostly on climate change.

In June, Pope Francis met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken for a 40-minute private audience at the Vatican. According to the State Department, the two discussed China, as well as "the humanitarian crises in Lebanon, Syria, the Tigray region of Ethiopia, and Venezuela." Blinken also thanked the pope for his “leadership” on the issue of the environment.

After Biden’s election to the presidency, the president of the U.S. bishops’ conference, Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, noted some areas of agreement and disagreement between Biden and the conference on policy issues.

US dioceses prepare to open synod process this month

Denver Newsroom, Oct 14, 2021 / 14:35 pm

Dioceses across the United States are preparing for the consultation process for the Synod on Synodality, a two-year, worldwide undertaking during which Catholics will be encouraged to submit feedback to their local diocese.

Most dioceses contacted by CNA said they are still in the process of determining how feedback will be collected from the faithful, and several dioceses are planning an opening Mass on Oct. 17.

One objective of the synod on synodality, according to the preparatory document, is to examine “how responsibility and power are lived in the Church as well as the structures by which they are managed, bringing to light and trying to convert prejudices and distorted practices that are not rooted in the Gospel.”

The “diocesan phase” of the synod will run until April 2022. The Vatican has asked all dioceses to participate, hold consultations, and collect feedback on specific questions laid out in synod documents. Earlier this month, the Vatican released a preparatory document and handbook to help dioceses to take part.

Pope Francis to meet with the poor in Assisi
15 October 2021, 17:11

Pope Francis will travel to the town of Assisi on 12 November for a private meeting with the poor.
By Vatican News

The meeting in Assisi, St. Francis’ hometown, will be a private one during which Pope Francis will share moments of listening and prayer with about 500 people from all over Europe in preparation for the World Day of the Poor on 14 November.

That World Day was wanted by the Pope to raise awareness and call on all men and women to listen to the cry of the poor. The theme of this year’s celebration is from the Gospel of Mark: “The poor you will always have with you.”

He established it in his Apostolic Letter, Misericordia et Misera, issued on 20 November 2016 to celebrate the end of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.

In its press release for the event, the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization explains that the Pope will travel privately to the little town in the heart of Italy’s Umbria region, and will meet with a group of poor people from across Europe in the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels.

Pope to Popular Movements: You create hope and forge dignity
16 October 2021, 15:30

In a video message, Pope Francis invites participants in the IV World Meeting of Popular Movements to dream and work together through solidarity and subsidiarity in order to build a better society and emerge better from the Covid-19 pandemic.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

“Dear Social Poets,” Pope Francis said, beginning his video message addressed to Popular Movements on Saturday.

“I like to call you this: Social Poets,” he explained, “because you have the ability and the courage to create hope where there appears to be only waste and exclusion. Poetry means creativity, and you create hope.”

“With your hands, you know how to forge the dignity of each person, of families and of society as a whole, with land, shelter, work, care, and community,” the Pope said.

Pope Francis: A Bishop is called to a life of service
17 October 2021, 11:09

Pope Francis ordains two new bishops during Holy Mass in St Peter’s Basilica on Sunday, telling them their life is one of service and closeness to others.
By Lydia O’Kane

In his Homily during Mass, on the occasion of the Episcopal Ordination of two Bishops, Pope Francis reflected on the role they were being called to carry out in the Church.

Against the backdrop of St Peter’s Basilica, he took inspiration from the twelve Apostles who were sent out into the world by Jesus so they might proclaim the Gospel to all peoples, leading them to salvation.

Gift of the Spirit

The Pope explained that “in order to perpetuate this apostolic ministry from generation to generation, the Twelve gathered together co-workers, transmitting to them through the laying on of hands the gift of the Spirit received from Christ, which conferred the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders.”

Thus, he continued, “through the uninterrupted succession of bishops in the living tradition of the Church, this living ministry, this primary ministry, has been preserved, and the work of the Saviour continues and develops to this day.”

Chosen to serve

Welcoming the new Bishops, Guido Marini and Andrés Gabriel Ferrada Moreira with “joy and gratitude”, Pope Francis told them that they had been chosen for a life of service.

May the Holy Spirit renew the grace of Baptism in us
17 October 2021, 12:20

Addressing pilgrims gathered for the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis invites us to ask the Holy Spirit to renew the grace of Baptism in us, the immersion in Jesus, in his way of being, in service.
Vatican News staff writer

Focusing his reflections on today’s Gospel reading which recounts when the disciples James and John asked the Lord to one day sit beside him glory, Pope Francis observed that Jesus responded offering them a fundamental teaching: “true glory” does not mean rising over others, but “experiencing the same baptism” that Jesus would receive soon in Jerusalem. As the baptism means “immersion”, Jesus with his Passion “immersed himself into death, offering his life to save us”, he explained, so His glory, God’s glory, is “love that becomes service, not power that seeks to dominate”.

Pope Francis pointed out that two types of thinking are happening here. The disciples wish “to rise up”, while Jesus wants us to be “immersed”. The first verb reflects a tempting worldly mentality, he noted, where we wish to rise up to have and experience everything, feeding ambitions, climbing the ladder to success. This quest for prestige, he noted, can become a spiritual problem, hiding behind good intentions where the end desire is all about ourselves and our own affirmation. He said this is why we must always discern our heart’s real intentions, asking ourselves questions about our underlying motivations in whatever we do: are we aiming to serve others or really seeking recognition, praise and compliments? The Pope said Jesus instead calls on us to rise up instead to serve others, not to rise above and over others to dominate, but to be “immersed in others’ lives.”

Pope: The dignity of the patient comes before sickness and profit
18 October 2021, 13:40

Pope Francis receives in audience a delegation from the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital of Rome and commends its work and Christian approach to healthcare.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis on Monday urged Catholic healthcare operators to be outgoing and extrovert in order to testify in action that there are no lives that are unworthy to be discarded, and which is not prey to the demands of profit.  “Every health care facility, especially those of Christian inspiration, should be a place where care for the person is practiced and where it can be said: ‘Here you do not see only doctors and patients, but people who welcome and help each other: here you can experience the therapy of human dignity’.” He made the remark to a delegation from the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital of Rome.

Founded in 1993, the Catholic institution was inspired by Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, a Spanish bishop of the Opus Dei prelature.  The Pope noted that Blessed del Portillo had encouraged them to put the patient before the disease, which, he said, is essential in every field of medicine and is fundamental for a treatment that is truly comprehensive and human.

Vatican regulates the role of postulator in saints’ causes
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Oct 19, 2021 / 07:05 am

The Vatican has introduced formal regulations for postulators — those who help guide the process behind the declaration of a saint in the Catholic Church.

The norms are part of the reform of the administration of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, which began in 2016.

The regulations for postulators, set out in 86 points, are designed to clarify the tasks and procedures, and to prevent conflicts of interest.

Pope Francis approved the rules at the end of August, and the congregation’s prefect, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, signed the document on Oct. 11.

‘I hope that I can join them soon’: Benedict XVI sends condolence message after friend’s death
By CNA Staff
Wilhering, Austria, Oct 19, 2021 / 09:00 am

Pope emeritus Benedict XVI has said that he looks forward to joining his friends in heaven in a condolence message following the death of a Cistercian priest.

In a letter dated Oct. 2 and released by Wilhering Abbey in Austria, the 94-year-old retired pope said that the death of Fr. Gerhard Winkler touched him profoundly, reported CNA Deutsch, CNA’s German-language news partner.

“The news of the passing of Prof. Dr. Gerhard Winkler O. Cist., which you have conveyed to me, has affected me deeply,” wrote Benedict XVI, who was pope from 2005 to 2013.

“Among all colleagues and friends, he was the closest to me. His cheerfulness and deep faith always attracted me.”

“Now he has arrived in the next world, where I am sure many friends are already waiting for him. I hope that I can join them soon.”

Pope Francis wants seminarians to read this letter from a clerical abuse survivor
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Oct 20, 2021 / 08:00 am

Pope Francis has shared a letter written by a clerical sexual abuse survivor with candidates preparing for the Catholic priesthood.

“For years I was mistreated by a priest who I should have called ‘little brother,’ and I was his ‘little sister,’” the letter writer said. “If we want to live the truth, we cannot close our eyes!”

Addressing priests, the abuse survivor wrote: “Please realize that you have received a huge gift. The gift of being an ‘alter Christus,’ of being the incarnation of Christ here in the world. People, and especially children, do not see a person in you, but Christ Jesus, in whom they trust without limits.”

“It is something HUGE and STRONG, but also very FRAGILE and VULNERABLE. PLEASE BE A GOOD PRIEST!” she said.
