Pope Francis blesses pro-life bells going to Ukraine and Ecuador
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Oct 27, 2021 / 05:50 am

Pope Francis on Wednesday blessed two large bells headed to Ukraine and Ecuador, where they will serve as a way for people to express their support for the lives of the unborn.

The “Voice of the Unborn” bells received the papal blessing before the general audience at the Vatican Oct. 27.

The bells are part of an initiative by the Polish Yes to Life foundation. Last year, Pope Francis blessed a bell which has now traveled to nearly 30 cities in Poland to be rung in support of the unborn.

“Today I blessed the bells that bear the name: ‘The voice of the unborn,’” Pope Francis said in a greeting to Polish pilgrims during his general audience in the Paul VI Hall.

“They are destined for Ecuador and Ukraine. For these nations and for all they are a sign of commitment in favor of the defense of human life from conception to natural death,” he said.

“May their sound announce the ‘Gospel of life’ to the world, awaken the consciences of men, and be a reminder of the unborn,” he added. “I entrust to your prayer every conceived child whose life is sacred and inviolable.”

Pope Francis: Love alone attracts and changes the human heart

At the General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis reflects on the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
By Christopher Wells

Saint Paul reminds the Galatians – and us – that the centre of salvation and faith is the death and resurrection of the Lord, Pope Francis said at Wednesday’s General Audience.

The Pope warned that there are many people today “who still seek religious security rather than the living and true God, focusing on rituals and precepts instead of embracing God’s love with their whole being.”

Vatican providing third dose of COVID-19 vaccine
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Oct 27, 2021 / 07:30 am

Vatican City is providing a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with priority given to the vulnerable and those over 60 years of age, a press release said Wednesday.

The city state's health and hygiene office started administering the third dose in the second half of October, according to a Vatican statement.

The Vatican has provided the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine to its residents and employees since January, beginning with the elderly, health and safety personnel, and those in frequent contact with the public.

Pope Francis and Benedict XVI received two doses of the vaccine in early 2021. The second dose was administered in February.

Pope Francis and Benedict, both well over the age of 60, may be among the first group to receive a third dose of the vaccine, though Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni declined to confirm this deduction Wednesday.

White House: Pope Francis ‘has spoken differently’ than Biden on abortion
By Matt Hadro
Washington D.C., Oct 27, 2021 / 14:00 pm

Ahead of President Joe Biden’s Oct. 29 meeting with Pope Francis, a White House spokeswoman acknowledged on Wednesday that “the pope has spoken differently” than Biden on abortion.

Biden, a Catholic, “is somebody who stands up for and believes that a woman’s right to choose is important,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said at an Oct. 27 briefing with reporters.

“The pope has spoken differently,” she added, in response to a question by EWTN News Nightly White House correspondent Owen Jensen.

Pope Francis will meet with President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden on Friday at the Vatican.

Psaki on Wednesday said that areas of agreement between the two will feature as the “centerpiece” of Friday’s meeting, including the issues of “poverty, combatting the climate crisis, ending the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“These are all hugely important, impactful issues that will be the centerpiece of what their discussion is when they meet,” she added.

Pope Francis has previously called abortion “murder,” compared abortion to “hiring a hitman,” said that unborn victims of abortion bear the face of Jesus, and decried efforts to promote abortion as an “essential service” during the pandemic.

The theme for the upcoming March for Life will be “Equality Begins in the Womb,” event organizers announced at a press conference on Oct. 27.

“The pro-life movement recognizes the immense responsibility this nation bears to restore equal rights to its most defenseless citizens in the womb,” March for Life president Jeanne Mancini said at the Wednesday press conference.

The 49th annual March for Life will be held on Friday, Jan, 21, 2022, in Washington, D.C. According to organizers, it is the world’s largest annual human rights demonstration.

Vatican recalls Pope Francis’ condemnations of gender ideology in letter to pro-life association
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Vatican City, Oct 28, 2021 / 06:00 am

The Vatican’s doctrinal congregation has recalled Pope Francis’ statements on gender ideology in a letter to a pro-life association in Italy.

The letter, dated Oct. 1, was made public shortly before the Italian senate blocked a controversial “anti-homophobia” bill, known as “Ddl Zan,” in a surprising 154 to 131 vote on Oct. 27.

The letter was the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s response to a request for clarification about how Catholic politicians should react to legislation in contradiction with Catholic teaching, in particular, gender ideology.

The CDF’s letter pointed out Pope Francis’ clear criticisms of gender ideology, made in several statements during his pontificate, and noted that Catholic legislators must oppose laws not consistent with Catholic teaching, as specified in a 2002 CDF document about Catholics in political life.

The CDF made these statements to the Pro Vita & Famiglia association, which promotes pro-life and pro-family policies in Italy.

Vatican cancels live broadcast of Biden greeting pope
By Nicole Winfield
Oct 28, 2021 | Associated Press

ROME — The Vatican on Thursday abruptly canceled the planned live broadcast of U.S. President Joe Biden meeting Pope Francis, the latest restriction to media coverage of the Holy See.

The Vatican press office provided no explanation for why the live broadcast of Biden’s visit had been trimmed to cover just the arrival of the president’s motorcade in the courtyard of the Apostolic Palace, where a Vatican monsignor will greet him.

Cancelled was any live coverage of Biden actually greeting Francis in the palace Throne Room, as well as the live footage of the two men sitting down to begin their private talks in Francis’ library, at which time the cameras normally would have stopped running.

The Vatican said it would provide edited footage of the encounter after the fact to accredited media.

The meeting between Biden and Pope Francis is scheduled to start at noon on Oct. 29 and last for about an hour.

Biden has previously met Pope Francis on three occasions, but this will be his first face-to-face meeting with the pope as the 46th president of the United States and the country’s second Catholic president.

According to the White House, the president plans to discuss “ending the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling the climate crisis, and caring for the poor.”

Vatican extends opportunities to gain indulgences for the dead
28 October 2021, 15:51

Due to the ongoing pandemic and related health and safety measures, the Apostolic Penitentiary – in response to requests from bishops around the world – is once again extending opportunities to gain indulgences for the benefit of the faithful departed.
By Adriana Masotti

The Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary published a decree on Thursday providing for the possibility of obtaining plenary indulgences in favour of the faithful departed throughout the entire month of November.

The decree, signed by Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, notes that the decision to once again extend the time period for gaining the indulgences was taken in response to “various pleas recently received from the various Sacred Pastors of the Church, due to the continuing state of the [Covid-19] pandemic.”

2021 Vatican Nativity Scene hails from the Andes
28 October 2021, 16:14

The traditional St. Peter’s Square Crib is a gift, this year, from Peru’s Chopcca Nation, while the majestic red fir Christmas tree comes from a forest in the northern Italian region of Trentino.
By Vatican News staff writer

Over 30 figurines created by five different artists belonging to the Chopcca Nation, make up the traditional Nativity Scene soon to be inaugurated in St. Peter’s Square

The Chopcca Nation comprises several communities that are located in the Huancavelica region in the high Andean region of Peru; their name refers to a character that represents a “common ancestor”, and oral sources and accounts date the First Nation to times prior to the arrival of the Incas.

Pope Francis had announced the Andean origin of the 2021 Nativity Scene last Sunday after the recitation of the Angelus when he greeted a group of Peruvian pilgrims who were celebrating the feast of Señor de Los Milagros.

A universal call to Salvation

With its representation of a cross-section of the life of the peoples of the Andes, a Holy See Press Office communiqué on Thursday explained that the Nativity Scene also celebrates 200 years from the independence of Peru, and symbolizes the universal call to Salvation.

Update:  Former Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick

Former cardinal McCarrick to faces next court hearing on Dec. 21
By John Lavenburg
Oct 28, 2021

DEDHAM, Mass. – The first pretrial hearing in the criminal sex abuse case against ex-cardinal Theodore McCarrick came and went in a matter of minutes. The case was continued until December 21, for a second pretrial hearing.

The attention paid to the case at Dedham District Court on Oct. 28 was noticeably different from that of McCarrick’s arraignment at the Massachusetts courthouse on Sept. 3. There was hardly any media presence and the court operated as normal with McCarrick’s pretrial hearing lumped in with 30-plus other cases on the docket.

McCarrick was criminally charged in July with three counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14 stemming the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old boy during a wedding reception at Wellesley College on June 8, 1974.

McCarrick’s in person appearance at the arraignment was his first public appearance since 2018. He is first former or current U.S. cardinal to be charged criminally with sexual abuse.

By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis on Friday received in audience the President of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Moon Jae-in, at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.

The South Korean President subsequently met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, accompanied by Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States.

A statement by the Holy See Press Office notes that during the cordial discussions, “appreciation was shown for the good bilateral relations between the States and for the positive contribution the Catholic Church offers to society, evoking particular diligence in the promotion of dialogue and reconciliation between Koreans.”

In this regard, hopes were further shared that joint effort and good will may favour peace and development in the Korean peninsula, supported by solidary and fraternity.

The discussions then allowed an exchange of views on some themes regarding current regional affairs and humanitarian issues.

By Vatican News staff writer

On Friday morning, Pope Francis met with the President of the United States of America, Mr. Joseph Biden, in the Vatican Apostolic Palace. A Holy See Press Office communiqué said that during the cordial talks, they dwelt on their common commitment to the protection and care of the planet, the health situation and the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the issue of refugees, and how to provide assistance for migrants.

Both parties also spoke about the protection of human rights, including the right to freedom of religion and conscience.

Finally, the talks enabled an exchange of views on some matters regarding the current international situation, also in the context of the G20 summit in Rome, and on the promotion of peace in the world through political negotiation.

Pope: Crises present us with the opportunity to build together
29 October 2021, 08:52

Pope Francis invites listeners during the BBC "Thought for the Day" radio column on Friday to join efforts for the protection of our common home through a renewed sense of shared responsibility and solidarity based on justice.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis on Friday, offered some reflections on building together in the face of the climate crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic to listeners of the BBC “Thought of the Day” radio column, as world leaders prepare to meet in Glasgow for the UN COP26 Climate Change Conference.

“Climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic have exposed our deep vulnerability and raised numerous doubts and concerns about our economic systems and the way we organize our societies,” the Pope said in an audio/video message.

However, “every crisis calls for vision, the ability to formulate plans and put them rapidly into action, to rethink the future of the world, our common home, and to reassess our common purpose.”

Deadline extended for first phase of the synodal process
29 October 2021, 13:03

The General Secretariat for the Synod of Bishops extends the deadline for the first phase of the synodal process to 15 August 2022.
By Vatican News staff writer

In order to “provide a greater opportunity for the people of God to have an authentic experience of listening and dialogue” during the recently launched synodal process, the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops has decided to extend the deadline of the first phase.

In a statement on Friday, the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops said that it has extended “the deadline for the presentation of the synthesis of the consultations by the Episcopal Conference, the Oriental Catholic Churches sui iuris and other ecclesial bodies” to 15 August 2022.

The statement notes that extension comes in response to numerous communications from various quarters in these first weeks of the synodal process requesting an extension of the duration of the first phase.

These communications, the statement says, “are truly an encouraging confirmation of those in the Church who are committed to celebrating the first phase of the synodal process… constituted by the consultation of the People of God.”

Further explaining the decision to extend the deadline, the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops notes that it evaluated the requests, always seeking the good of the Church, “aware that a synodal Church is a Church that listens, and considering that this first phase is essential for this synodal path.”

Pope Francis on Saturday received in the Vatican Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the first-ever meeting between the two leaders.  After holding talks with the Pope, Modi was received by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

“During a brief conversation, the cordial relations between the Holy See and India were discussed,” said a brief note by the Holy See Press office soon after the visit.

Modi’s Vatican visit lasted nearly an hour.  The Indian Prime Minister gifted the Pope a silver candlestick and a book on the commitment to the environment.  The Pope reciprocated with a bronze plaque with the inscription “The desert will become a garden”, volumes of papal documents, his message for World Day of Peace and the document on Human Fraternity, signed on February 4 of 2019 in Abu Dhabi by the Pope and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar.

President Joe Biden receives Communion at Mass in Rome
By Autumn Jones
Denver Newsroom, Oct 30, 2021 / 12:10 pm

President Joe Biden received Communion during Mass Saturday evening in Rome, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Biden met with Pope Francis on Friday, during which, he says, Pope Francis told him to “keep receiving Communion,” despite his views on abortion.

According to the A.P., about 30 people attended the Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, which had a large security presence. The president and his wife sat in the last row.

The report stated that Mass was celebrated by Father Joe Ciccone and two concelebrating priests, and that Biden was seen putting U.S. currency in the collection basket.

Pope at Angelus: May our love for God and neighbour resound in us
31 October 2021, 12:10

At the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis calls on us to repeat Jesus' words and truly endeavour "to Love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength and my neighbour as myself”.
By Vatican News staff writer

Greeting pilgrims gathered in Saint Peter's Square before leading the recitation of the Angelus, Pope Francis focused his Sunday catechesis on the day's Gospel reading, which recounts when a scribe approached Jesus asking Him which commandment is first.

Jesus answers by quoting Scripture saying the first commandment is to love God and the second to love one's neighbour as oneself. The scribe recognises and repeats Jesus's words.

The Pope said this repetition serves to reinforce a key teaching and to understand that the Word of God must be received in a special way, noting "it must be repeated, made one’s own, safeguarded."

Pope meets head of scandal-plagued order struggling with reform
By Elise Ann Allen
Nov 1, 2021

ROME – Pope Francis met with the leader of a scandal-ridden Peruvian lay group Saturday, a meeting which comes amid further complaints from former members and as the community is redrafting its governing constitutions.

On Saturday, Oct. 30, Pope Francis met privately at the Vatican with Father José David Correa Gonzalez, Superior General of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae (SCV), known colloquially in Spanish as the Sodalites. Neither the Vatican nor the group has yet confirmed the content of the meeting, but presumably it concerned the ongoing overhaul of the SCV following waves of scandals involving charges of sexual, physical and psychological abuse.

A spokesman for the SCV told Crux that a statement on the nature of the meeting is forthcoming.

Correa Gonzalez’s meeting with the pope follows a visit of a commission charged with revising the SCV’s statutes to Rome earlier this month.

Polish bishops say ‘no taboo topics’ during ad limina visit to Vatican
By Paulina Guzik
Nov 1, 2021

ROME – Poland’s bishops have wrapped up their ad limina visits to Rome, which usually take place every five years, but have been delayed due to the pandemic.

During their time in Rome, the bishops hold meetings with Pope Francis and the various departments of the Roman Curia, the central bureaucracy of the Vatican.

“There were no taboo topics,” said Auxiliary Bishop Adrian Galbas of Ełk, in northeastern Poland.

“The suggestions were not given as instructions. The pope was open to any questions. The pontiff told us – ask whatever you want, every issue important for you is the one I want to think through as well,” Galbas told Crux.
