Pope at Angelus: We are called to strive for sincerity
07 November 2021, 12:25

Reflecting on the Sunday Gospel reading at the Angelus, Pope Francis says “we must watch out for” those who live their faith with duplicity, so as not to become like them; whereas we must “watch” the sincerity of the widow, described in today's reading, whose humble love for God is an example for all.
By Vatican News staff writer

In his catechesis before leading the recitation of the Angelus, Pope Francis described the two scenes in today's Gospel: inside the Temple of Jerusalem we see the scribes who revel in being greeted and respected while they "devour windows' houses and recite long prayers in order to be seen"; then we see the poor widow, one of those exploited by the powers of the time, who drops coins in the Temple treasury,  “everything she had, her whole living.” This contrast is a reason for us today to be on guard, the Pope said. “We must watch out” for those who live their faith with hypocrisy, like the scribes, in order to not become like them; whereas we must "watch" the widow whose sincerity, humility, and love for God are an example for us to follow.

Pope Francis: Memories of the priest that baptised him
07 November 2021, 15:59

Vatican News presents excerpts from Pope Francis’ preface to the book “Ho fatto cristiano il Papa” (“I made the Pope a Christian”), the biography of Don Enrico Pozzoli, the Salesian missionary who baptised Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires in 1936 and followed his vocation up to the novitiate. The new book by Ferruccio Pallavera will be presented in various Italian cities over the next few days, with the first event taking place in Asti on 10 November at the city's seminary.
By Pope Francis

He [Fr Enrico Pozzoli] was called upon by all those who had a particular problem, in the certainty that he would do anything he could to help. People also turned to Father Pozzoli when they needed advice.

Father Pozzoli had a sense of reality. And when something unusual happened, he had a particular way of expressing himself. He would bring his hand to the top of his head and scratch it with his five fingers, saying, “Canastos...!” This was his only gesture of impatience. He was a man of great common sense, which he showed in the many pieces of advice he gave people. For this reason, he was greatly appreciated by everyone.

Vatican liturgy chief: Traditional Latin Mass ‘abrogated by Pope St. Paul VI’
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Nov 8, 2021 / 09:00 am

The Vatican’s liturgy chief has said that the Traditional Latin Mass was “abrogated by Pope Saint Paul VI.”

Archbishop Arthur Roche made the comment in a letter dated Aug. 4 to the English Cardinal Vincent Nichols.

The prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments was replying to a letter from the cardinal dated July 28, regarding the application of Pope Francis’ motu proprio Traditionis custodes in England and Wales.

A spokesman for Cardinal Nichols confirmed in a email to CNA on Nov. 8 that the correspondence, published on Nov. 5 by the website Gloria.tv, was genuine.

In a letter to the world’s bishops accompanying Summorum Pontificum, Benedict XVI wrote that the pre-conciliar liturgy was “never juridically abrogated.”

“As for the use of the 1962 Missal as a Forma extraordinaria [extraordinary form] of the liturgy of the Mass, I would like to draw attention to the fact that this Missal was never juridically abrogated and, consequently, in principle, was always permitted,” he said in the letter dated July 7, 2007.

Pope Francis sends a message of solidarity to Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi in the wake of an attack on his residence in Baghdad, Iraq’s capital
By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis has expressed his closeness to Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, after a recent attack on his residence, from which Al-Kadhimi came out unscathed.

The Prime Minister’s residence in Baghdad’s high-security Green Zone was attacked by an explosive-laden drone on Sunday. The drone struck the building injuring seven of the Prime Minister's bodyguards and drawing condemnation from several quarters.

News sources say that three drones were used in the attack, but two were shot down.

“Following the attack on your residence in Baghdad, His holiness, Pope Francis wishes me to convey his prayerful closeness to you and your family, and to those injured,” read the telegram signed by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Pope Francis expressed hope that in condemning this “vile act of terrorism,” he is confident that with God's blessing, the Iraqi people “will be confirmed in wisdom and strength in pursuing the path of peace through dialogue and fraternal solidarity.”

Charles de Foucauld to become a saint on 15 May
09 November 2021, 12:51

The Congregation for the Causes of Saints announces the date for the canonization of Charles de Foucauld and six other Blesseds.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Charles De Foucauld, considered to be one of the pioneers of interreligious dialogue, together with six other Blesseds, during a Canonization Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on 15 May.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. It follows the Ordinary Public Consistory of 3 May 2021, whereby the Pope had authorized the canonizations, without however setting a date for the ceremony due to the health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pope at Audience: Walking according to the Spirit makes us free
10 November 2021, 11:41

Pope Francis concludes his General Audience catechetical series on the Letter to the Galatians highlighting how the Apostle Paul teaches that "the fulfillment of the true Law is found in this life of the Spirit given to us by Jesus." And the life of the Spirit "can only be lived in freedom".
By Vatican News staff writer

Speaking to pilgrims gathered in the Paul VI Hall in the Vatican for Wednesday's General Audience, Pope Francis noted that Saint Paul's Letter to the Galatians shows his role as a great evangeliser, theologian, and pastor. He pointed out how he helps us discover "the shocking newness contained in the revelation of Jesus Christ", contemplating the mystery of Christ and sharing it with "creative intelligence" with those to whom he preached.

At the same time, he ably guided and encouraged a lost and confused community at the time with great pastoral sensitivity, the Pope observed, showing how the strength of the Spirit had "truly entered his heart" and how his meeting with the Risen Christ transformed his entire life.

Traditionis custodes: Rome diocese bans Traditional Latin Mass for Easter Triduum
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome, Italy, Nov 10, 2021 / 04:20 am

The vicar general for the Diocese of Rome has banned the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass during the Easter Triduum in his implementation of Pope Francis’ motu proprio Traditionis custodes.

In a letter dated Oct. 7, but made public on several blogs Nov. 9, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis said that Mass could continue to be celebrated according to the 1962 Roman Missal at five churches in Rome on all days except from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday, the period known as the Triduum.

De Donatis also stated that no other sacraments or sacramentals may be celebrated according to the pre-Vatican II missal except the Mass.

The diocesan press office confirmed on Nov. 10 that the letter, addressed to the priests and faithful of the Diocese of Rome, was authentic.

As pope, Francis is also the bishop of Rome, but because the pope has many other responsibilities, the day-to-day care of the Diocese of Rome is entrusted to the vicar general, whose full title is Vicar General of His Holiness.

A vicar general is given, by canon law, executive power over the diocese in all administrative acts except those reserved to the bishop. In the Diocese of Rome, the cardinal vicar functions like a de facto diocesan bishop.

Rome diocese’s guidelines were issued in response to Pope Francis’ motu proprio Traditionis custodes, published in July, which placed tight restrictions on Mass using the 1962 Roman Missal, known variously as the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite, the Tridentine Mass, and the Traditional Latin Mass.

COP26: Pope warns of God’s judgment for failure to care for creation
11 November 2021, 10:34

In a letter to the Catholics of Scotland, Pope Francis prays for “wisdom and strength” for leaders at the COP26 meeting on the environment, warning that “this occasion must not be wasted, lest we have to face God’s judgment.”
By Christopher Wells

“Time is running out,” Pope Francis said in a Letter to the Catholics of Scotland, made public earlier this week by the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

The occasion of the COP26 conference, he said, “must not be wasted, lest we have to face God’s judgment for our failure to be faithful stewards of the world He has entrusted to our care.”

Pope urges governments to take action against child pornography
11 November 2021, 11:17

In an interview with French magazine “Paris Match”, Pope Francis denounces those responsible for the production of child pornography, and expresses regret for the abuse scandal in the Church.
By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis has denounced the proliferation of child pornography and called on States to act quickly against this crime.

In an interview with Caroline Pigozzi for French magazine “Paris Match”, the Holy Father said the groups responsible for the production of child pornography “behave like mafias who hide and defend themselves,” to the detriment of the victims who are children and minors.

The Pope also spoke about the results of the investigations on sexual abuse carried out by the French bishops, referring to the situation as a “shame.”

The Pope’s interview will be published in “Pourquoi eux” (Why them), a publication by the Plon Publishing House which will be released on 18 November. The book details Caroline Pigozzi’s meetings with Popes, Heads of State and other personalities.

Pope: If integrated, migrants help society and Church grow
11 November 2021, 12:22

At the Vatican on Thursday, Pope Francis receives participants in a conference promoted by the ‘Migrantes Foundation,’ the pastoral arm of the Italian bishops’ conference (CEI) for people on the move.
By Robin Gomes

“In the light of the Latin American experience, I was able to affirm that ‘immigrants, if they are helped to integrate, are a blessing, a source of enrichment and new gift that encourages a society to grow’”, Pope Francis said on Thursday, citing from his encyclical ‘Fratelli tutti’.

He was speaking to some 200 participants in a conference promoted by the ‘Migrantes Foundation’, the pastoral ministry of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) for emigrants, immigrants and migrants.  The November 9-12 conference in Rome is discussing the theme, “Italians in Europe and the Christian mission".

Integration

He reiterated the four steps of welcoming, accompanying, promoting and integrating migrants, failing which, he warned, could lead to serious problems. The 3 suicide bomb attacks in Brussels, Belgium on March 22, 2016, including at Zaventem Airport, he said, were carried out by children of non-integrated, ghettoized migrants.

Peace Forum: Pope calls for ‘responsible hope’ to emerge from pandemic
11 November 2021, 13:17

Pope Francis sends a message to the 4th edition of the Paris Peace Forum calling for “responsible hope” to improve the world and emerge from the pandemic. He also writes that “there can be no peace-generating cooperation without a concrete collective commitment to integral disarmament.”
By Vatican News staff reporter

In his message to the Paris Peace Forum 2021, which runs from 11-13 November, Pope Francis focuses on a world emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, and writes that in this “historical phase, the human family is faced with a choice.”

Return to normality?

The first possibility, he writes, “is that of a so-called 'return to normality.’” However, the Pope notes that this would mean “a return to the old social structures inspired by ‘self-sufficiency, nationalism, protectionism, individualism and isolation’ and excluding our poorer brothers and sisters.”

Pope Francis emphasizes that “in this globalised but fractured world, the decisions we take today to get out of the crisis determine the ‘course’ for generations to come.”

In order to create a better future, remarks the Pope,  “we need a new way out; we must work together to come out better than before.”

Pope prays with poor in Assisi: ‘May we always share our bread with those in need’
12 November 2021, 12:10

Pope Francis visits the Italian town of Assisi to speak and pray with the poor, and urges all Christians to extend our hands toward those in need of assistance.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis kicked off his Friday morning visit to the Italian town of Assisi with an unexpected visit to the Poor Clares Convent, where he met privately with the cloistered nuns serving the Church in prayer.

He then traveled to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, where a poor person presented him with the pilgrim’s staff and mantle, to show that all present were pilgrims in the town of St. Francis.

Pope: Ratzinger Prize enriches human and spiritual heritage
13 November 2021, 12:20

Pope Francis addresses past and current winners of the prestigious Ratzinger Prize, recalling that the award, given in Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI's name, enriches an immense human and spiritual heritage to be shared.
By Francesca Merlo

Speaking on Saturday on the occasion of the presentation of the annual Ratzinger Prize, Pope Francis greeted all those present, and in particular the prize winners, offering them a warm welcome.

The Ratzinger Prize

The prestigious Ratzinger Prize is given to two scholars each year who stand out for their scientific research in the field of theology, regardless of their religious faith. Due to the pandemic, last year's winners, Professors Jean-Luc Marion and Tracey Rowland were unable to celebrate, and so are celebrating along with this year's winners, Professors Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz and Ludger Schwienhorst-Schönberger.

Joseph Ratzinger

The Pope then went on to speak of Joseph Ratzinger, whom he described as one of the many teachers who "educate us to think in order to live our relationship with God and with others ever more profoundly, to direct human action with virtues and above all with love". Benedict XVI, said the Pope, is a theologian who was "able to open and nourish his reflection and his cultural dialogue towards all these directions together, because faith and the Church live in our time and are friends of every search for truth".

With this prize being given in his name, continued the Pope, it is an opportunity for me to "address once again our affectionate, grateful and admiring thoughts to him". The Pope recalled that just a few months ago they celebrated Benedict XVI's 70th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. "We feel that he accompanies us in prayer, keeping his gaze constantly fixed on God's horizon".

"Let us not forget that Benedict XVI continued to study and write until the end of his pontificate", continued the Pope. About ten years ago, while fulfilling his governmental responsibilities, he was busy completing his trilogy on Jesus "and thus leaving us a unique personal testimony of his constant search for the face of the Lord".

Pope Francis to Poor Clares in Assisi: pray for the Church
13 November 2021, 13:05

Speaking to the Poor Clares in Assisi on Friday, Pope Francis focused on the need for prayer so that the Church might not be affected by sin, stressing that God "only asks our humility to ask for forgiveness.”
Vatican News staff writer

Before going to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi to meet the poor on Friday morning,  Pope Francis visited the Poor Clares Convent, where he met privately with the cloistered nuns serving the Church in prayer.

Peace of mind

In his speech he asked the Franciscan nuns to pray for the Church so that it may not be corrupted by sin, calling on them to be attentive contemplatives. Pope Francis said attentiveness to the Lord requires having peace of mind, serenity of the heart and serenity of the hands, lest we miss Him when He passes by. It is not watching the world pass by and chatting from a window, but being aware of what is going on with a pure mind, thinking well and not badly of people, he remarked.

Pope to Christian entrepreneurs: Grow in creativity
13 November 2021, 12:37

In a video message to the International Christian Union of Business Executives (UNIAPAC), the Pope says that entrepreneurs are called to make their contribution for development in order to overcome the crisis triggered by the pandemic.
By Amedeo Lomonaco

"Grow in creativity! Do not be afraid! And, if there is fear, think of the creativity that your parents had. This is the kind of creativity you must pursue!" With these words, Pope Francis exhorted members of the International Christian Union of Business Executives (UNIAPAC) to do their part in a post-Covid world.

He was speaking to UNIAPAC President, Bruno Carlos Pinto Basto Bobone, who was received by the Pope in a private audience on 6 November in the Vatican. On that occasion, he addressed the members of the organization through a video message in which he Pope focused on creativity as a crucial aspect of our time: "Today we need it, we have all suffered from the Covid crisis. One does not overcome a crisis alone: either we all come out of it together, or no one will!".

55th World Peace Day: Education, work and dialogue between generations
13 November 2021, 12:27

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development presents the message for the 55th World Peace Day, an observance marked annually on 1 January.
By Vatican News staff writer

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development has released the title of the next World Peace Day Message.

In a Communiqé released on Saturday, the Dicastery stated that the 55th World Day of Peace, to be held on 1 January 2022, will be entitled "Education, work and dialogue between generations: tools for building lasting peace".

Three contexts

In its communiqué the Dicastery writes that "Pope Francis thus identifies three vast contexts today in full mutation, to propose an innovative reading that responds to the needs of current and future times, inviting everyone 'to read the signs of the times with the eyes of faith', so that the direction of this change awakens new and old questions with which it is right and necessary to be confronted".

World Peace Day

World Peace Day was established by Pope Paul VI in his December 1967 message and celebrated for the first time in January 1968.
