Pope Francis prays for the sick and suffering before Our Lady

Pope Francis performs a private act of veneration to Our Lady on the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
By Vatican News staff writer

On Wednesday morning, just before 6:15 am, Pope Francis went to Piazza di Spagna for a private act of veneration to Our Lady, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception liturgically celebrated on 8 December by the Church.

A statement by the Holy See Press Office said that while it was still dark, Pope Francis placed a bouquet of white roses at the base of the column where the statue of the Madonna is, and turned to Our Lady in prayer, asking for her intercession for the miracle of a cure for the many sick and for healing for peoples suffering from wars and the climate crisis.

The Holy Father also prayed for conversion, to melt the hearts of stone of those who build walls to separate themselves from the pain of others.
The statement notes that the Pope left Piazza di Spagna around 6:20 am and went to the Basilica of St. Mary Major. There he prayed before the icon of Maria Salus Popoli Romani before returning to the Vatican shortly after 7: 00 am.

By Francesca Merlo

Addressing the faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square for the Angelus on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Francis turned to the day’s Liturgy, which “brings us into the house of Nazareth, where she receives the angel’s annunciation”. Within intimate domestic walls, the Pope noted, “the Gospel gives us a detail that reveals the beauty of Mary’s heart”.

Pope to Cenacolo Community: Let us not be afraid of our miseries
09 December 2021, 08:55

Pope Francis on Wednesday made a private visit to the "house" of the Good Samaritan fraternity in Rome. He listened to the songs and testimonies of the volunteers and guests of the association that welcomes those who live in physical and spiritual distress. With a prayer in the chapel, created by the young people, the Pope concluded the year dedicated to St Joseph.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

"Two minutes and he’s here!". It was a boy wearing a hood and a mask who announced, at around 4.18pm, the arrival of Pope Francis at the Good Samaritan fraternity of the Cenacolo Community in Rome, where the Pope closed the Year dedicated to St Joseph inaugurated on 8th December 2020. Boys and girls, families, priests and religious, guests and staff at this place that exudes grace, joy, welcome stood outside 30 minutes before the Pope’s arrival along the avenue of the entrance. They braved the pouring rain and a few hailstones, waving banners and coloured garlands. They waited for the Pope by reciting the Creed or the Rosary, the one they pray every day even three times a day "out of gratitude" and to bring order to a life previously lived in total chaos.

Pope: Let us not experience a fake, commercial Christmas
10 December 2021, 12:30

Pope Francis on Friday met delegations from Peru and Italy who donated the Nativity Scene and the giant Christmas tree in the centre of St. Peter’s Square this year. Another Italian group donated the crib in the Vatican’s Paul VI audience hall.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis on Friday exhorted Christians to keep clear of a fake, commercial Christmas, polluted by consumerism and indifference.  He made the remark to a group of 3 delegations who donated two Nativity Scenes and a Christmas tree to the Vatican this year.

This year’s Nativity Scene in St. Peter Square’s is a gift from Peru and comes from the Chopcca Nation, which comprises several communities located in the Huancavelica region in the highlands of the Andes mountains. The scene comprising more than 30 life-sized figurines in typical Andean costumes, are made of ceramic, maguey wood and fibreglass, and features alpacas, vicunas and the Andean condor, Peru’s national symbol. Next to the crib, the majestic 28-meter-high red fir Christmas tree as well as its wooden decorations are from the Andalo forest of the northern Italian region of Trentino.

Another Nativity Scene has also been set up at the Vatican’s Paul VI audience hall, where the Pope received the delegations.  It is a gift of the young people of the parish of San Bartolomeo in Gallio, in the Italian Diocese of Padua.

Fact or fiction? Nine popular myths about Our Lady of Guadalupe
By David Ramos
Mexico City, Mexico, Dec 10, 2021 / 08:00 am

In the 500 years since Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared, the image of Our Lady has become the subject of several popular myths and legends, especially in Mexico, where she appeared.

Fr. Eduardo Chávez was the postulator for Juan Diego's canonization and is a renowned expert on the apparitions. He is also director of the Institute for Guadalupan Studies.

Speaking to ACI Prensa, CNA's Spanish language news partner, Chávez separated fact from fiction.

Is it true the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe has the same temperature as a human body?

“It's logical that marble, stone, wood, and fabric have different temperatures,” he said. The image of the Virgin is formed on “a cloth made out of plant fibers, an agave called 'ixotl.' And it doesn't have a temperature like a human being would have,” he said, dispelling a common rumor about the image.

Update:  Plans for the interior of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris

France’s heritage authorities back controversial plans for Notre-Dame Cathedral’s interior
By CNA Staff
Paris, France, Dec 10, 2021 / 05:00 am

France’s heritage authorities approved on Thursday controversial plans for the interior of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Members of the National Heritage and Architecture Commission backed the proposals during a closed-door meeting on Dec. 9 amid an outcry over the restoration of the cathedral badly damaged by fire in 2019.

French media quoted the Ministry of Culture as saying that “the experts gave a favorable opinion on the interior refurbishment program.”

The commission expressed two reservations about the plan. The first concerned a proposal to remove saints’ statues in the chapels. The second related to plans to install moveable pews.

AFP reported that the commission asked to view a prototype of the pews, which would replace the current straw chairs.

The vote by a 24-member committee came shortly after more than 100 of France’s leading figures in the arts and academia criticized the proposals.

In an article published jointly by the magazine La Tribune de l’Art and newspaper Le Figaro on Dec. 7, they wrote: “The Archdiocese of Paris wants to take advantage of the restoration work to transform the interior of Notre-Dame into a project that completely distorts the decor and liturgical space.”

“Everything we do is at the service of the Gospel, and you, in particular, serve that "gospel" which is consecrated life, so that it may be the gospel for the world today.”  Pope Francis made the remark to some 60 members of the Vatican Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, at the end of their plenary assembly.   He expressed his closeness to all those who believe in the future of consecrated life.

Pope: During Advent ask what we should do for Jesus and others
12 December 2021, 12:20

At the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis says the Advent Season is about asking ourselves how to prepare for Christmas and what we can do for Jesus and others, concretely, in our lives. He also blessed the statues of the Child Jesus brought by children to St. Peter's Square on this Third Sunday of Advent.
By Vatican News staff writer

During the Angelus on this Third Sunday of Advent, Pope Francis greeted the many pilgrims present, including many families with their children, who brought little statuettes of the Child Jesus to be blessed on this day, known as "Bambinelli Sunday". Saint Pope Paul VI started this tradition over fifty years ago.

Speaking from the window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking the Square, Pope Francis greeted the children present, wishing them and their families a blessed Christmas. He blessed the figurines of the Child Jesus they brought with them to be placed in their Christmas nativity scenes back home.

What should we do?
Before leading the recitation of the Angelus, the Pope reflected on today's Gospel reading, which recounts John the Baptist responding to those who come to him asking how to change their lives for the better, since their hearts were touched by the Lord. It reflects an enthusiasm for the Lord's coming and a desire to prepare themselves concretely for this joyous, life-changing experience. In the same way, we too should ask ourselves what we should do within our own lives, the Pope suggested, and reflect on what we are called to do and become.

Pope laments deadly US storms, prays for victims
13 December 2021, 12:05

Pope Francis sends his condolences to Americans in central and southern parts of the United States who were affected by deadly storms over the weekend.
By Devin Watkins

As the death toll continues to rise in the wake of deadly storms over the weekend, Pope Francis renewed his condolences to those affected.

He had already sent his thoughts and prayers for the tragedy on Sunday at the Sunday Angelus address.

On Monday, the Pope sent a telegram—signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin—to Archbishop José Gomez, the president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The Pope expressed his sadness at learning of the devastating tornadoes which have killed around 100 people, though that toll could rise further as rescue operations continue.

‘Immense tragedy’
Pope Francis offered his “heartfelt prayers that Almighty God will grant eternal peace to those who have died, comfort to those who mourn their loss, and strength to all those affected by this immense tragedy.”

He also sent his gratitude to rescue and healthcare personnel, and to “all engaged in caring for the injured, the grieving families, and those left homeless”.

The Pope concluded the telegram invoking “upon all engaged in the massive work of relief and rebuilding the Lord’s gifts of strength and generous perseverance in the service of their brothers and sisters.”

Synod of Bishops restores resource page link to New Ways Ministry, issues apology
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Dec 13, 2021 / 10:58 am

In a reversal of an earlier decision, the Synod of Bishops has restored a link to a video by New Ways Ministry on its resources webpage. An employee at the General Secretariat also apologized to the LGBT outreach group after the link was removed last week.

According to a Dec. 13 statement on the New Ways Ministry website, Thierry Bonaventura, communications manager of the General Secretariat, had apologized “for removing from their website a link to our video encouraging LGBTQ people to participate in synod consultations.”

Bonaventura told CNA on Dec. 7 that the link had been taken down after he was made aware that the U.S. bishops’ conference expressed its disapproval of the LGBT outreach ministry in 2010.

As of Dec. 13, the link is again visible on the synodresources.org website.

Pope sends a letter to the King of Bahrain
14 December 2021, 12:17

Cardinal Luis Tagle, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples visited Bahrain for the consecration of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia. The Cardinal also presented the Bahraini King with a letter from Pope Francis.
By Vatican News staff writer

The newly-constructed Cathedral of “Our Lady of Arabia”, Awali, Bahrain, was inaugurated on 9 December by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain.

Present at the occasion was Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples who consecrated the Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady, on the next day in the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio to Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar and Apostolic Delegate to Saudi Arabia, Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent and the Apostolic Administrator of Northern Arabia, Bishop Paul Hinder.

During the homily at Mass, the Cardinal urged the faithful to be “living stones” that make the Church a home to the family of God. He also highlighted three ways through which Christians can remain living stones in Jesus, our cornerstone: listening to the Word of God, offering ourselves as spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God, and the service of charity.

Cordial meeting

Cardinal Tagle also presented a letter from Pope Francis to the Bahraini King, who, for his part, expressed his desire to receive the Pope in Bahrain one day . On 3 February 2020, Pope Francis had received the King in audience at the Vatican.
