Pope at Angelus: Christmas invites us to offer help and joy
19 December 2021, 12:12

At the Sunday Angelus on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, Pope Francis recalls how Mary "arose and went with haste" to visit and assist her relative Elizabeth. In a similar way, he says we can reach out in generosity towards others and bring the joy of Jesus, as Mary did with Elizabeth.
By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis greeted pilgrims in Saint Peter's Square on this Fourth Sunday of Advent and encouraged them to "arise and to go in haste towards Christmas." He was referring to the day's Gospel reading which recounts when Mary went to visit Elizabeth, who was also pregnant, as a response to an inner impulse calling her to be close and help her. He said in this way Mary gave Elizabeth "the joy of Jesus, the joy she carried in her heart and in her womb", proclaimed in her Magnificat.

Pope Francis dialogues with society's marginalized in special broadcast
19 December 2021, 21:30

Pope Francis dialogues with four people living tough realities, those often “invisible” to society, in a special broadcast by Italy’s Mediaset network.
Vatican News

During a Sunday evening broadcast by Italy’s Mediaset network, Pope Francis addressed various themes on modern-day issues, including violence, poverty, the consequences of the pandemic, and the lives of those in prison. The discussion over these grave problems in society was recorded by Mediaset at the Casa Santa Marta residence. The dialogue and conversation took place with four people described as the "invisible ones" of society, those often forgotten and marginalized, facing great difficulties and life challenges. Italian journalist, Fabio Marchese Ragona, who covers the Vatican for Mediaset coordinated the encounter which included a mother by the name of Giovanna, who lost her job and struggles with violence in her family; Maria, a homeless woman; Maristella, an 18-year-old scout whose youthful joy has been lost due to the pandemic; and Pierdonato who served 25 years in prison.

Intergenerational dialogue, education and work at heart of Pope’s Peace Day message
21 December 2021, 11:30

In his message for the 55th World Day of Peace marked on 1 January, Pope Francis points to three paths for building a lasting peace: dialogue between generations, education and work.
By Linda Bordoni

In his annual message for the Catholic Church’s World Day of Peace, Pope Francis is calling on all men and women of goodwill, on government leaders, and on decision-makers to walk together with courage and creativity on the path of intergenerational dialogue, education and work.

Introducing his message, the Pope notes that the path of peace continues to remain “sadly distant from the real lives of many men and women.”

Citing the intensification of wars and conflicts, climate change and environmental degradation, an individualistic economic model and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, “the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth,” he says, “constantly make themselves heard, pleading for justice and peace.”

But, he points out, “in every age peace is both a gift from on high and the fruit of a shared commitment”, and he singles out three paths for building lasting peace.

Cardinal Turkson: Pope Francis will decide if I continue to lead Vatican dicastery
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Dec 21, 2021 / 06:15 am

Cardinal Peter Turkson told journalists on Tuesday that Pope Francis will decide whether he continues to lead the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

Speaking at a Vatican press conference on Dec. 21, the Ghanaian cardinal confirmed that his five-year term is expiring and he is awaiting the pope’s decision on his future.

“If the Holy Father decides to have me continue, that’s what it is. If he decides to reassign me, that’s what it is,” he said.

“All of us come here to serve and support the Holy Father in his ministry, and that’s what it is. So your question, then, probably is just that, whether I’ll be here next year. We just wait for the Holy Father to see what he wants us to do.”

Pope Francis meets Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Hilarion
22 December 2021, 10:39

Metropolitan Hilarion meets with Pope Francis on Wednesday ahead of the weekly General Audience, to discuss various issues of common concern among the Russian Orthodox and Catholic Churches.
By Lisa Zengarini

Before the General Audience on Wednesday morning, at 7:50 am, Pope Francis met the Metropolitan of Volokolamsk, His Eminence Hilarion Alfeyev, in the study of the Paul VI Hall.

Fraternity and common concerns

The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, reported that during the fraternal conversation, they discussed issues of common concern for which the two Churches are committed to seeking concrete human and spiritual responses.

The Holy Father thanked Metropolitan Hilarion for his 85th birthday greetings expressed on behalf of Patriarch Kirill. For his part, Pope Francis expressed his affection and closeness to the Russian Church and to its Patriarch, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, recalling with gratitude the fraternal conversation they had in Havana in 2016.

After the meeting, the Pope and the Metropolitan exchanged gifts. Metropolitan Hilarion greeted Pope Francis with an icon of the Madonna "of the Sign” and the Holy Father gave a mosaic depicting the Madonna "Synkatabasis of God", in addition to  volumes containing papal documents, copies of his Peace Day Message 2022 and of the Abu Dhabi Document on Human Fraternity.

The meeting ended around 8:50 am.

Pope at Audience: Christmas an invitation to adore Son of God
22 December 2021, 09:22

At the Wednesday General Audience ahead of Christmas, Pope Francis reflects on the birth of Jesus, and says the event is a reminder that we are loved first by God without any merit of our own.
By Christopher Wells

With the Christmas season fast approaching, Pope Francis on Wednesday took the opportunity of the weekly General Audience to reflect on the birth of Jesus – an event that “history cannot dispense with.”

Recalling the familiar figures of Mary and Joseph in the stable at Bethlehem, the humble shepherds, and the rich and powerful Magi from the East, the Pope explained, “The message of the Gospel is clear: the birth of Jesus is a universal event that concerns all of humanity.”

Pontifical Academy for Life releases document on Covid and Education
22 December 2021, 13:00

The Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Life releases a new document on the dire consequences Covid-19 has had on education, and calls for schools to reopen to children.
By Francesca Merlo

On Wednesday, the Pontifical Academy for Life presented a new Document entitled: "The Pandemic and the Challenge of Education" which has been prepared in collaboration with the Dicastery for Integral Human Development and the Covid-19 Vatican Commission.

A parallel pandemic

The text  begins by stating that the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on the lives of children and adolescents requires a focus on what has been called a “parallel pandemic” , that is the psycho-social stress caused by the Covid-19, resulting in distress and illnesses with different consequences according to age and social backgrounds.

The aim of the Document s to  treasure the experience of recent months and recognize the “positive resources” that emerged  during the pandemic, identifying some particularly critical issues "in order to face the immediate future with the hope that the younger generations deserve", the PAV explains in the introduction.

Pope to Roman Curia: Humility embraces weakness, leaves space for creativity
23 December 2021, 11:15

Pope Francis exchanges Christmas greetings with members of the Roman Curia, and urges them to embrace humility like the Child Jesus in order to leave space for creativity, build communion, and keep the Church’s mission focused on Christ.
By Devin Watkins

Officials of the Roman Curia met with Pope Francis on Thursday for the annual exchange of Christmas greetings.

The Pope said the audience offers a yearly opportunity to “express our fraternity ‘out loud’” and to reflect on the identity and mission of the Church’s central governing body.

Humility formed the focus of the Pope’s speech, since the King of kings entered the world through precisely that door.

Pope Francis to beatify ‘smiling pope’ John Paul I in September 2022
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Dec 23, 2021 / 09:53 am

Pope Francis will beatify the “smiling pope” John Paul I on Sept. 4, 2022.

Vatican News, the website overseen by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, said on Dec. 23 that the pope who reigned for only 33 days will be beatified in St. Peter’s Basilica.

It added that the Congregation for the Causes of Saints shared the ceremony’s date with Cardinal Beniamino Stella, postulator of the cause of canonization, and Bishop Renato Marangoni of Belluno-Feltre, the Italian diocese where the cause opened on Nov. 23, 2003, and closed on Nov. 9, 2017, with the proclamation of John Paul I’s heroic virtues.

Pope Francis recognized a miracle obtained through the intercession of his papal predecessor in October.

John Paul I was elected pope on Aug. 26, 1978, following the death of Paul VI. A priority of his short pontificate was carrying forward the work of the Second Vatican Council.

He died unexpectedly on Sept. 28, 1978, at the age of 65, and was succeeded by Pope John Paul II.

Archbishop Roche on ‘Traditionis Custodes’ and Its Guidelines: ‘The Liturgical Possibilities Are in Place’
The prefect for the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments discussed the implementation of the guidelines regarding the July apostolic letter on the Traditional Latin Mass.
Edward Pentin  Interviews  December 23, 2021

VATICAN CITY — The promotion of the traditional liturgy has been “curtailed but does not characterize discrimination,” Archbishop Arthur Roche has said in Dec. 22 comments to the Register.

“What is important to realize now is that the Holy Father has spoken,” the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments continued. “The liturgical possibilities are in place; the challenge is to get on with it without licking one’s wounds when no one has been injured.”

The archbishop was responding to email questions about Responsa ad dubia — responses to 11 dubia (questions) he issued with the Pope’s approval on applying Pope Francis’ July 16 apostolic letter  Traditionis Custodes (Guardians of the Tradition).

Pope at Christmas night Mass: Jesus shows the way from littleness to greatness
24 December 2021, 20:25

At the Mass during the Night for the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord, Pope Francis reflects on how God comes into the world in littleness, as a tiny infant, drawing near to us to touch our hearts. The Pope celebrated the Mass in St. Peter's Basilica with a smaller congregation on hand in respect for health-safety rules.
By Vatican News staff writer

Celebrating the Christmas Mass "during the Night," Pope Francis recalled how in the darkness, a light shines, an angel appears, announcing to the shepherds, “To you is born this day a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord." Telling them how to find the "God who has come down to earth," the angel directs them to the child wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Pope's Christmas: memories and prayers for our future
24 December 2021, 11:08

In an interview with Italian newspapers “Repubblica” and “La Stampa” Pope Francis reflects on the meaning of Christmas today and thinks back to cherished memories of his childhood in Buenos Aires.
By Adriana Masotti & Linda Bordoni

In the run-up to Christmas festivities, Pope Francis took time to chat with reporters from the Italian daily newspapers “Repubblica” and “La Stampa” with whom he reflected on the significance of Christmas today and recalled memories of growing up in Buenos Aires. He talks about what he liked reading and his favourite sports, but he also turns his attention to the poor, to sick children, to victims of abuse, to the future of humanity.

A Family Christmas

It was tradition for his family in Argentina, the Pope says, to celebrate Christmas on the morning of 25 December at his grandparents' house. Once, he says, "we arrived and his grandmother was still making “cappelletti” (the ring-shaped ravioli filled with meat). She made them by hand and had produced 400 of them! We were amazed! Our whole family was there: uncles and cousins came too." Today, the Pope says, Christmas "is always a surprise. It is the Lord who comes to visit us," a surprise for which he prepares himself by preparing to "meet God." He reveals that he loves Christmas songs like "Silent Night" and the Italian "Tu scendi dalle stelle” that, he says, convey  “peace and hope, and create an atmosphere of joy for the Son of God who is born on earth like us, for us."

Pope at Urbi et Orbi: Christmas invites us to dialogue, unity, peace
25 December 2021, 12:21

In his "Urbi et Orbi" Christmas message given at midday in Saint Peter's Square, Pope Francis expressed the joy of this day when God shows us through the birth of Jesus the way of encounter and dialogue so that we might know it and follow it in trust and hope, something needed more than ever in our troubled world.
By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis gave his traditional Christmas message followed by his "Urbi et Orbi" blessing (to the city and the world) to crowds of pilgrims gathered in a rainy Saint Peter's Square and to the world via a broadcast and streaming spanning the globe.

In his opening words he announced "the Word of God, who created the world and who gives meaning to history and to humanity’s journey, became flesh and came to dwell among us." This event that fills the heart with wonder, he noted, shows how "the Word became flesh in order to dialogue with us," since "God himself, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is dialogue, an eternal and infinite communion of love and life." Through Jesus, God showed us the way to encounter and dialogue, "so that we might know it and follow it, in trust and hope."

Greeting pilgrims in St. Peter's Square on the Feast of the Holy Family of Nazareth, Pope Francis calls on us to remember our family roots and to realise that each day we learn how to be a family.
