Pope at Angelus: Treasure the signs of God’s love
16 January 2022, 12:10

At the Sunday Angelus Pope Francis explains that the signs we read about in the Gospels are clues that reveal God’s love for us, who is always near, tender, and compassionate.
By Vatican News staff writer

Reflecting on the Sunday Gospel reading, which recounts the wedding at Cana, where Jesus transformed water into wine, Pope Francis explained how this sign at Cana sparked the faith of His disciples. The signs we read about in the Gospels are clues that reveal God’s love.

Pope: Search for Christian unity must be a journey together
17 January 2022, 10:50

Pope Francis welcomes an ecumenical delegation from Finland to the Vatican, on the eve of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis began his address to the Ecumenical Delegation from Finland with a reflection on the Magi, the Wise Men of the Gospel who found the Child Jesus and worshipped Him.

“The Magi reached the goal because they sought it,” the Pope said. “Yet they sought it because the Lord, by the sign of the star, had first set out in search of them.” Like the Magi, we too are sought by God, “and our response must surely be like that of the Magi: a journey together.”

Pope to Holy Land Review: Tell the story of fraternity in the Middle East
17 January 2022, 12:44

Pope Francis urges the journalists of The Holy Land Review to tell the world the story of fraternity among Christians and among all the children of Abraham.
By Devin Watkins

A group of around 50 journalists from The Holy Land Review, accompanied by Fr. Francesco Patton, OFM, the Custos of the Holy Land, met the Pope for a private audience on Monday morning.

The publication of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and offers news, information, and insights on life in the land of Jesus.

Pope Francis thanked the entire media group—which includes staff from the Christian Media Center and the Custody’s website and social media—for their dedication to the Church’s mission.

“The service you carry out today is in line with the communicative intuition which guided the Custos Ferdinando Diotallevi, and consists—as he wrote in the first edition of the review—in ‘making better known the Holy Land, the Land of God, the cradle of Christianity, the venerable shrines where the Redemption of the human race was fulfilled.’”

Pope Francis sends aid to migrants at Belarus border and victims of typhoon in Philippines
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Jan 18, 2022 / 06:00 am

Pope Francis has sent 100,000 euros (around $114,000) in aid to migrants at the border between Poland and Belarus, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development announced on Jan. 18 that the pope had also given the same sum to victims of a devastating storm in the Philippines.

The Vatican department said in a press release that the pope had earmarked the funds for migrants living in freezing winter conditions along the roughly 250-mile border separating Poland and Belarus.

It said that the money would also help Caritas Poland, the country’s biggest charitable organization, “to address the migratory emergency on the border between the two countries.”

Pope Francis to confer new lay ministries for first time in St. Peter’s Basilica
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Jan 18, 2022 / 08:20 am

The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis will confer the ministries of catechist, lector, and acolyte upon lay men and women for the first time in St. Peter’s Basilica on Sunday.

Candidates from three continents will receive the new ministries during the papal Mass for the Sunday of the Word of God on Jan. 23.

Two people from the Amazonian region in Peru will be formally made catechists by the pope, along with other candidates from Brazil, Ghana, Poland, and Spain.

The ministry of lector will be conferred on lay Catholics from South Korea, Pakistan, Ghana, and Italy.

Each of these ministries will be conferred through a rite prepared by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments that will be presented for the first time, according to a Vatican communique issued on Jan. 18.

“Before the homily, the candidates will be summoned, called by name and presented to the Church,” it said.

Those called to the ministry of lector will be presented with a Bible, while catechists will be entrusted with a cross.

In this case, it will be a copy of the pastoral cross used by popes St. Paul VI and St. John Paul II.

Pope at Audience: Joseph's paternity reflects God's tender love
19 January 2022, 09:40

Continuing his catechetical series on Saint Joseph, Pope Francis looks at his role as a loving father and a reflection of God's tenderness, which allows us to feel loved and welcomed in all our weaknesses.
By Vatican News staff writer

Speaking to pilgrims in the Paul VI Audience Hall, Pope Francis explored the role of Saint Joseph as a "father in tenderness."

Recognising that the Gospels do not offer details on how he excercised his paternity, the Pope said we can be sure that Joseph being a "just" man translated into the education he gave to Jesus, and the loving care he showed Him.

Pope Francis appoints apostolic visitor for Eritrean Catholics in US and Canada
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Jan 19, 2022 / 13:00 pm

Pope Francis appointed an apostolic visitor on Wednesday for Eritrean Catholics in the United States and Canada.

The pope named Father Tesfaldet Tekie Tsada, chaplain of the Eritrean community of Los Angeles, on Jan. 19 as apostolic visitor of Eritrean Catholics of the Alexandrian Ge’ez Rite in the two countries.

The Vatican announced on the same day that the pope had chosen an apostolic visitor for Eritrean Catholics in Europe: Msgr. Kesete Ghebreyohannes Weldegebriel, protosyncellus of the Archeparchy of Asmara, the metropolitan see of the Eritrean Catholic Church.

The move follows the pope’s decision in January 2020 to appoint an apostolic visitor for Ethiopian Catholics in Europe and name an apostolic visitor for Ethiopian Catholics in the U.S. and Canada in July of that year.

Pope: Workers are people, not numbers
20 January 2022, 12:30

Pope Francis addresses Italy's National Association of Building Contractors and talks about the importance of their work, highlighting the necessity of ensuring safe working conditions for all.
By Vatican News staff writer

Addressing Italy's National Association of Building Contractors in the Vatican on Thursday, Pope Francis noted that their meeting, marking the association's 75th anniversary, was "an occasion to recall a history that goes back to the post-World War II period in Italy". In fact, he continued, the National Association of Building Contractors was founded in 1946 as an entrepreneurial association representing Italian companies of all sizes operating in the construction sector.

Pope asks Curia to make personal arrangements for Spiritual Exercises
20 January 2022, 12:03

The continuing health emergency posed by the Covid-19 pandemic will have an effect on the annual Lenten Spiritual Exercises of the Roman Curia and Pope Francis.
By Vatican News staff writer

Due to the continuing epidemiological emergency caused by Covid-19, this year too it will not be possible to hold the Spiritual Exercises of the Roman Curia at Casa Divin Maestro in Ariccia.

A statement released on Thursday by the Holy See Press Office explains, “The Holy Father has therefore invited the Cardinals residing in Rome, the Heads of Dicasteries and the Superiors of the Roman Curia to make their own personal arrangements, withdrawing in prayer, from the afternoon of Sunday, 6, to Friday, 11 March.”

The statement also notes that during that week, all the Holy Father's engagements will be suspended, including the General Audience of Wednesday, 9 March.

The same precautions were adopted by the Pope and the Vatican in 2021 as well.

Saint Irenaeus to become Doctor of the Church
20 January 2022, 13:05

Pope Francis authorizes the conferral of the title Doctor of the Church on Saint Irenaeus, and the promulgation of three Decrees concerning the Heroic Virtues of three people on the path to canonization.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis on Thursday received in audience Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and authorized him, in accordance with the opinion of the Plenary Session of the Cardinals and Bishops who are members of the same Dicastery, to confer the title of Doctor of the Universal Church on Saint Irenaeus.

The Pope had already announced this intention during an audience with members of the St. Irenaeus Orthodox-Catholic Joint Working Group in the Vatican last October.

On that occasion, he described Saint Irenaeus, (who, though born in Smyrna, in what is now Turkey, served as Bishop of Lyons between 130 and 140 AD) as “a great spiritual and theological bridge between Eastern and Western Christians.”

Report on abuse in Munich diocese: 497 victims in 74 years
20 January 2022, 14:49

A press conference presents the report by a law firm commissioned by the Church. The mandate was to look into the handling of abuse cases by the archbishops of Munich between 1945 and 2019, including then-Cardinal Ratzinger. Holy See Press Office director Matteo Bruni tells journalists: "We are waiting to examine the contents of the document” and expresses grief for abuses and closeness to all victims.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

At least 497 people were abused in the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising over a period of almost 74 years (from 1945 to 2019). Most of them were young; 247 are male victims and 182 are female. Sixty percent of the victims were between the ages of 8-14. The report identifies 235 perpetrators of abuse including 173 priests, nine deacons, five pastoral workers, 48 people from the school environment. This is the data presented in the report on clerical abuse in the Church of Munich, compiled by the Westpfahl Spilker Wastl law firm, which was commissioned by the archdiocese in February 2020.

Two-hour press conference
The report was presented this morning during a two-hour press conference in the "Haus der Deutschen Wirtschaft," in the presence of representatives of the diocese but in the absence of Cardinal Reinhard Marx. Also present were members of the Archdiocesan Abuse Victims' Council. During the meeting, excerpts from the over 1,000-page report were read out by attorney Martin Pusch, head of the law firm in charge, and by attorney Marion Westphal.

Some of the numbers
The report, focused on the handling of past abuse cases, is based on information gathered through colloquiums and interviews with victims as well as those who held, and still hold, positions of responsibility in the archdiocese. Of the 71 people surveyed, 56 of them responded to the request. Statements were compared at the end of August 2021. The names of sixty-five "actual or suspected" perpetrators of abuse were submitted. According to experts, the number of unreported crimes would be "considerably higher."

Reviewing the management
Specifically, the report reviews the management of a succession of archbishops: Cardinals Michael von Faulhaber, Joseph Wendel, Julius Doepfner, Joseph Ratzinger, Friedrich Wetter, and Reinhard Marx. The report also examined Cardinal Ratzinger's years as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; Ratzinger, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, served as Archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1982. The independent commission reportedly identified four cases that occurred during the ministry of then-Cardinal Ratzinger, with those responsible for the abuses still remaining in office. The authors of the report believe he would have had responsibility, while acknowledging that the Pope Emeritus - as they put it - answered their questions and said he had no knowledge of the situation. The most egregious case, involving a priest from the diocese of Essen who was later transferred to Munich, has been known since 2010.

Pope's Communications Day message: 'Listening is essential for dialogue'
24 January 2022, 11:51

In his Message for the World Day of Social Communications, Pope Francis says listening is an indispensable first step in human communication, and a dimension of love.
By Christopher Wells

After focusing last year on seeing reality and conveying it to others, Pope Francis in his 2022 Message for the World Communications Day emphasized the quality of listening, which he said “is decisive in the grammar of communication and is a condition for genuine dialogue.”

The Pope noted that people are quickly losing the ability to listen to one another, while at the same time listening is undergoing new developments, especially due to new forms of communicating. These trends demonstrate that “listening is still essential in human communication.”

Benedict XVI confirms he attended disputed 1980 meeting in Munich
By CNA Staff
Munich, Germany, Jan 24, 2022 / 03:38 am

Pope emeritus Benedict XVI has apologized for mistakenly saying that he did not attend a disputed meeting in 1980 while serving as archbishop of Munich and Freising.

In a statement published in the German Catholic weekly Die Tagepost on Jan. 24, the 94-year-old retired pope said that the mistake was the result of an editing error, reported CNA Deutsch, CNA’s German-language news partner.

Benedict XVI initially told investigators that he was not present at a meeting of archdiocesan officials on Jan. 15, 1980.

But in the statement, Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Benedict XVI’s private secretary, said that the pope emeritus “would now like to make it clear that, contrary to what was stated during the hearing, he took part in the ordinariate meeting on Jan. 15, 1980.”

“The statement to the contrary was therefore objectively incorrect,” he said.

“He would like to emphasize that this was not done out of bad faith, but was the result of an error in the editing of his statement. He will explain how this came about in the pending statement. He is very sorry for this mistake and asks for this mistake to be excused.”

Claims that the future Benedict XVI covered up an abuse case in the German Archdiocese of Munich and Freising resurfaced this week, more than 10 years after the Vatican firmly rejected the allegations.

Pope celebrates Vespers for Feast of the Conversion of St Paul

Pope Francis presides at Vespers for the Solemnity of the Conversion of St Paul, celebrated in the Basilica of St Paul’s Outside-the-Walls at the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
By Christopher Wells

Representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and other Christian churches and ecclesial communities joined Pope Francis in the Basilica of St Paul’s Outside-the-Walls for an Ecumenical Vespers service marking the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

The theme for this year’s Week of Prayer is taken from the Gospel account of the journey of the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Child Jesus: “We saw His star in the East, and we came to worship Him.”

The story of the Magi can help us along the path to full unity, Pope Francis said in his homily at Vespers, focusing on three stages of their journey: its beginnings in the East, their passage through Jerusalem, and their final arrival in Bethlehem.
