Pope at Audience: St Joseph 'a dreamer able to discern God's voice'
26 January 2022, 09:54

At the General Audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis offers a meditation on St Joseph as a “man who dreams,” and who knows how to discern the voice of God and act upon it.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis focused his catechesis at the Wednesday General Audience on the dreams of St Joseph, showing how the example of Jesus’ foster father can help us to discern the voice of God.

The Holy Father noted that in the Bible, “dreams were considered a means by which God revealed Himself.”

Dreams, he said, symbolize “the spiritual life of each of us, that inner space that each of us is called to cultivate and guard, where God manifests Himself and often speaks to us.”

However, the Pope also warned of other voices within us, the voices of our own fears, experiences, hopes, as well as the voice of “the Evil one, who wants to deceive and confuse.” Therefore, he said, it is necessary to cultivate discernment, which allows us to recognize the voice of God among many others.

Pope Francis to parents: Never condemn a child
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Jan 26, 2022 / 03:35 am

Pope Francis urged parents on Wednesday never to condemn their children.

At his Jan. 26 general audience in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, the pope encouraged parents to turn to St. Joseph for help, including those whose children are of “different sexual orientations.”

He said: “I am thinking at this moment of so many people who are crushed by the weight of life and can no longer hope or pray. May St. Joseph help them to open themselves to dialogue with God in order to find light, strength, and peace.”

Speaking off the cuff, he added: “And I am thinking, too, of parents in the face of their children’s problems: Children with many illnesses, children who are sick, even with permanent maladies — how much pain is there! — parents who see different sexual orientations in their children; how to deal with this and accompany their children and not hide in an attitude of condemnation.”

The Munich report and Ratzinger's fight against abuse
26 January 2022, 11:30

Following the publication of the investigation, the years of the Pope Emeritus’ Bavarian episcopate are in the spotlight. It's only fair to remember Benedict XVI’s fight against clerical paedophilia during his pontificate and his willingness to meet and listen to the victims, asking them for forgiveness.
By Andrea Tornielli

The words that were used during the press conference to present the report on abuse in the Archdiocese of Munich, as well as the seventy-two pages of the document dedicated to the brief Bavarian episcopate of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, have filled the newspapers in the past week and have triggered some very strong comments. The Pope emeritus, with the help of his collaborators, did not evade the questions of the law firm commissioned by the Archdiocese of Munich to draw up a report that examines a very long span of time, from the episcopate of Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber to that of the current Cardinal Reinhard Marx. Benedict XVI provided an 82-page response, after having been able to examine some of the documentation in the diocesan archives. Predictably, it was Ratzinger's four and a half years at the helm of the Bavarian diocese that monopolized the attention of commentators.

Pope Francis meets Auschwitz survivor on Holocaust Remembrance Day
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Jan 27, 2022 / 11:40 am

Pope Francis marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Thursday with an hour-long meeting with Auschwitz survivor Edith Bruck.

The Holy See press office said on Jan. 27 that the pope had “a long and affectionate conversation” with the 90-year-old Hungarian-born Jewish writer at his residence, the Casa Santa Marta.

“In particular, both stressed the inestimable value of transmitting the memory of the past to the youngest, even in its most painful aspects, so as not to fall back into the same tragedies,” the press office said.

The pope visited Bruck at her home in Rome in February 2021.

Holy See warns against Holocaust denial and revisionism trends
27 January 2022, 15:36

On the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp, the Holy See’s Permanent ******* to the OSCE warns of dangerous distortions, including Holocaust denial and revisionism, that risk warping the importance of historical remembrance.
By Linda Bordoni

Addressing the permanent council of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on Holocaust Remembrance Day, Fr Janusz Urbańczyk upheld dialogue as a tool to combat prejudice, and warned of the perils of “distortions, including Holocaust denial and revisionism,” that “warp the importance of remembering this horrific event,” allowing the threat of anti-Semitism to lurk in Europe and elsewhere.

In his speech, the Holy See’s Permanent ******* to the OSCE said the commemoration of these abhorrent events includes two elements:

First, the remembrance of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp by the Allies on 27 January 1945.

Second, the reflection on the inhumane and mechanical persecution and extermination of Jews at the hands of the German Nazi regime, thus ending in the Shoah. The horrendous acts committed are a most drastic reminder of the danger of disregarding people’s intrinsic human dignity and urge a collective commitment to “saying […]: Never again!”

He recalled Pope Francis’ appeal on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, in which he appealed to educators and young people “to not forget that tragic event of history so that we can build a future where human dignity is never again trampled by racist ideologies".

“In confronting today’s anti-Semitism, dialogue can serve as a powerful tool to combat prejudice and foster recognition of human dignity,” he said.

Pope to Catholic media: Check facts but always respect people
28 January 2022, 10:44

Pope Francis meets with members of the International Catholic Media Consortium, and urges journalists to remain faithful to the truth by always checking facts and respecting individuals.
By Devin Watkins

As misinformation continues to swirl regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, Pope Francis is calling on journalists, especially Catholic media professionals, to verify the facts they report while adopting a respectful attitude toward those who produce and consume fake news.

Meeting with members of the International Catholic Media Consortium on Friday, the Pope reflected on the theme of communications and truth.

The consortium—run up by Aleteia and I Media, two news websites, and Verificat, a fact-checking agency—set up the “Catholic FactChecking” website in early 2021.

Fr Guerrero: We have reduced costs and will show our accounts to Bishops’ Conferences
28 January 2022, 11:55

The Prefect of the Secretariat for Economy describes how the scope of the Holy See's budget has increased with the inclusion of new entities. The total deficit expected for 2022 is €33 million, compared to the €42 budgeted for 2021: "Containment of expenditures, without reducing the Pope's charitable work, but rather increasing it." A forthcoming report on Peter’s Pence is expected to show a 15% reduction in 2021 contributions.
By Andrea Tornielli

"To help the economy of the Holy See to meet its needs, taking care that economic activity does not distract or detract from the credibility of the Holy See's mission of fostering unity in charity and the evangelising mission of the Church, which is what matters.” This is how the Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, Father Juan Antonio Guerrero Alves, describes the task of the Dicastery he has led for two years now.

In this interview with Vatican Media, Guerrero offers some data on the new budget of the Holy See, which has increased significantly this year due to the inclusion of new entities. Cost containment continues (further reduced by €4 million). The budgeted deficit is lower than that of last year, and the Prefect hopes to soon be able to provide data on the income and expenditure of Peter’s Pence as well, anticipating that this year too contribution of the faithful has decreased.

Pope: Pandemic an opportunity to improve worker solidarity
29 January 2022, 12:43

Pope Francis meets with members of the Italian Leather Chemists Association, and urges them to minimize the environmental impact of leather production while conserving their professional heritage.

“The current crisis can be approached as an opportunity to grow together in solidarity and the quality of work.”

Pope Francis expressed that belief on Saturday during an audience with members of the Italian Leather Chemists Association.

The group represents scientists who draw on chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology to produce leather from raw cattle hide and sheepskins, a process also known as tanning.

World Day for Consecrated Life: Invitation to the synodal spirit of participation
29 January 2022, 12:52

On the occasion of the World Day for Consecrated Life, 2 February, the Vatican Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life has addressed a letter to the world’s consecrated men and women.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis will mark the World Day for Consecrated Life on Wednesday with a Eucharistic celebration in Rome’s St. Peter's Basilica.

Pope Saint John Paul II instituted the annual observance of the Catholic Church, marking it for the first time in 1997.  He designated its celebration on February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.

For the 26th edition of the celebration this year, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life has addressed a letter to the world’s consecrated men and women inviting them to walk together as a community in the synodal spirit of participation, where members exercise responsibility for one another through mutual listening, excluding no one.

Pope at Angelus: Find Jesus in those who are close to you every day
30 January 2022, 12:10

Pope Francis reflects on the Gospel reading of the day inviting believers to be humble and willing and never to reject the ways of the Lord.
By Linda Bordoni

Reflecting on the passage from the Gospel of Luke that tells of how Jesus met with incomprehension and hostility when he gave his first sermon in his home town, Nazareth, Pope Francis invited Christians to believe in good, even when faced with closures and rejection (Lk 4:21-30).

Speaking during the Sunday Angelus, the Pope recalled that in Nazareth, Jesus is received with incomprehension and hostility. Rather than a word of truth, he explained, his fellow villagers “wanted miracles and prodigious signs.”

They reject him, he said, and “Jesus therefore utters a phrase that has become proverbial: “No prophet is acceptable in his own country.”

The Pope explained that these words reveal “that Jesus’ failure was not entirely unexpected. He knew his people, he knew the risk he was running, he took rejection into account.”

“And, so, we might wonder: why, if he foresees a failure, does he go to his hometown all the same? Why do good to people who are not willing to accept you?”

This, Pope Francis continued, is  a question that we too often ask ourselves. But it is a question that helps us understand God better: “Faced with our closures, he does not withdraw: he does not put brakes on his love.”

Pope: Taxation should favor wealth redistribution for public services
31 January 2022, 12:43

.Pope Francis urges members of Italy’s taxation authority to implement Gospel values as they work to favor the redistribution of wealth and support public services for society’s neediest members
By Devin Watkins

The Pope met Monday with a delegation of the Agenzie delle Entrate, Italy’s revenue agency, and reflected on the Biblical roots of taxation and its purpose in society.

The theme of taxation, noted Pope Francis, appears regularly in the Bible, and was an aspect of every government that ruled over the Holy Land.

“The Bible,” he pointed out, “does not demonize money, but offers an invitation to use it correctly, to not become slaves to it, and not to turn it into an idol.”

Even the Biblical kings of Israel imposed taxes on their subjects, he said, making it part of life even in ancient times.

Pope’s February prayer intention: For consecrated women
01 February 2022, 16:00

Pope Francis releases his prayer intention for the month of February, and invites Catholics to pray for religious sisters and consecrated women as they continue in their mission with courage.
By Devin Watkins

“What would the Church be without religious sisters and consecrated laywomen? The Church cannot be understood without them.”

Pope Francis made that affirmation in his February prayer intention, released on Tuesday by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.

The Pope encouraged all consecrated women to discern how best they can respond to the challenges facing humanity.

“I exhort them to keep working and to have an impact with the poor, with the marginalized, with all those who are enslaved by traffickers,” he said. “I especially ask them to make an impact on this.”

Pope at Audience: Communion of saints joins all Church’s members
02 February 2022, 09:31

At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis reflects on the communion of saints, and says every member of the Church is closely connected to each other in Christ.
By Devin Watkins

The Pope turned his attention at the Wednesday General Audience to the communion of saints, calling it an expression of God’s love.

Pope Francis noted that some forms of devotion to the saints seem to stem more from a “pagan” mindset than a Christian one.

He said the difference is that Christians place our trust in God alone, rather than in a person or image.

“Even when we rely fully on the intercession of a saint, or even more so that of the Virgin Mary, our trust only has value in relation to Christ.”

The Pope pointed out that saints do not “work miracles”, but are merely the vessels through which the grace of God works.

Saints, he added, are intercessors “who pray for us, and the Lord gives us grace through that Saint.”

Pope at Mass: Cultivate a renewed vision of consecrated life
02 February 2022, 18:30

Pope Francis presides over Mass on the feast of the Presentation of the Lord on 2 February, which also marks the World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life.
By Vatican News staff reporter

In his homily on Wednesday evening, Pope Francis took his cue from the feast of the Presentation of the Lord which is celebrated this 2 February.

The Pope recalled two elderly people, Simeon and Anna who are waiting in the Temple, “the fulfilment of the promise that God made to his people: the coming of the Messiah.”

Pope Francis noted that Simeon is moved by the Spirit; “then he sees salvation in the Child Jesus and finally he takes him into his arms.”

Pope Francis releases a video message to mark the 2nd International Day of Human Fraternity, and urges all people to trod the difficult path of fraternity in order to overcome the prejudices and conflicts that divide humanity.
By Devin Watkins

The International Day of Human Fraternity was set up by the UN General Assembly to commemorate the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, in Abu Dhabi on 4 February 2019.

Pope Francis sent a video message on Friday as the world marked the second Day dedicated to this historic event. Fraternity, said the Pope, can act as a “bulwark against hatred, violence, and injustice”.
