Pope at Angelus: Strive to see clearly and speak charitably
27 February 2022, 12:18

Reflecting on the Sunday Gospel reading, Pope Francis invites us to reflect on how we look at ourselves, others and how we express ourselves in order purify our gaze and our speech.
By Vatican News staff writer

In his Sunday reflections before leading the recitation of the Angelus, Pope Francis recalled the Sunday Gospel where Jesus observed how we can sometimes focus only on the faults of others, while completely overlooking our own, noticing the speck in our borther's eye and not noticing the beam in or own. The Pope said we often find reasons to blame others while justifying ourselves, whether we focus on what is wrong in society, the Church or our world, "without first questioning ourselves and without making an effort to change ourselves first." Acting this way, we look blindly and cannot claim to be a guide or teacher for others.

“The Lord invites us to clean up our gaze. He first asks us to look within ourselves to recognize our failings.”

Pope: 'Silence all weapons. Those who wage war forget humanity!'

Pope Francis renews his invitation to set aside 2 March as a Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace in Ukraine, and decries the "diabolical and perverse logic of weapons" which, he says, is far from the will of God.

Pope Francis receives representatives of Iraqi Churches
28 February 2022, 14:18

Meeting a delegation of Iraqi Church religious leaders on Monday, Pope Francis encourages the local Christian communities to continue promoting dialogue so as to build fraternity and counteract extremism and fundamentalism.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis on Monday received in audience Representatives of the Christian Churches in Iraq visiting Rome on the occasion of the first anniversary of his Apostolic Journey to the country in March 2021.

Courageous witnesses of the Gospel

In his address to the delegation , the Holy Father recalled that Iraq is the cradle of civilization and of Christianity, remarking that it has also been a land of exiles since biblical times. Referring to the tragic events of these recent years, he expressed his deep gratitude to the Christian communities of Iraq for their “courageous witnesses of fidelity to the Gospel” amid persecution.

“I bow before the suffering and martyrdom of those who have preserved the faith, even at the cost of their lives. Just as the blood of Christ, shed out of love, brought reconciliation and made the Church flourish, may the blood of these many martyrs of our time, belonging to different traditions but united in the same sacrifice, be a seed of unity among Christians and a sign of a new springtime of faith.”

Pope Francis reportedly tells Order of Malta leaders there is ‘no urgency’ to complete reforms
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Feb 28, 2022 / 10:05 am

Pope Francis reportedly told leaders of the Order of Malta on Saturday that there is “no urgency” to make a final decision on long-awaited reforms.

Marwan Sehnaoui, the chairman of the steering committee for the constitutional reform process, said in a letter that the Feb. 26 meeting at the Vatican was focused on the sovereign order’s ongoing reform.

According to Sehnaoui, Pope Francis opened and closed the two-hour discussion by underlining that ultimately he himself would decide on the “critical issues regarding the order’s constitutional reform.”

“Pope Francis listened carefully to the presentations and interventions of both sides. After the exchange of views, the Holy Father said that there is no urgency in making a final decision. His Holiness also said that he wishes to gather and review more information and that he would probably convene another audience,” Sehnaoui said in his letter.

The papal meeting included the Lieutenant of the Grand Master Fra’ Marco Luzzago, as well as the papal delegate Cardinal Silvano Maria Tomasi, who is overseeing the drafting of the new constitution.

In a statement following the Feb. 26 meeting, Tomasi said that the participants in the meeting had presented to Pope Francis how the proposed reform “maintains and better frames the order in its characteristic of a religious lay order and allows for the continuation of its charitable, diplomatic, and humanitarian action.”

Tomasi said that Pope Francis had granted the Order of Malta another audience, after which the pope will decide on the projects they have presented to him.

In the ninth hearing of the proceedings for the alleged illicit use of funds of the Holy See, the president of the Court, Giuseppe Pignatone, read out a long order in which he rejected all the requests for dismissing the case made since July by the defense lawyers. The next hearing will be on March 17 when Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu takes the stand.
By Salvatore Cernuzio - Vatican City

The trial in the Vatican for alleged misconduct in management of Secretariat of State funds has moved forward in the next steps of the judicial process. The next hearing will take place on March 17 and mark the start of what the president of the Court, Giuseppe Pignatone, termed "the real trial" with the first interrogation of Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu. In an order of about forty pages, read this morning in the meeting hall of the Vatican Museums, Pignatone rejected all the requests for case dismissal presented by defense lawyers from July 27 up until yesterday's hearing, which lasted over three hours. The ordinance: every defense claim rejected.

Pope at Audience: Alliance of generations is indispensable
02 March 2022, 09:26

Pope Francis has begun a new cycle of catechesis on old age, focusing his second reflection in the series on long life as a “symbol and opportunity.”
By Christopher Wells

The tremendous longevity of the Old Testament patriarchs – who in the ritual narrative of the Scripture are said to have lived for centuries after fathering their children – has a “profound symbolic meaning,” Pope Francis said at Wednesday’s General Audience.

In his second reflection in a new catechetical series on old age, the Pope said the earliest moments of human history required a “slow and prolonged initiation,” as human beings, created in God’s image and likeness, yet bearing the fragility of mortal existence, needed time “to decipher experiences and confront the enigmas of life.” During that same time, he said, “the spiritual quality of man was also slowly cultivated.”

Ash Wednesday: We implore the peace only God can give
02 March 2022, 17:18

Cardinal Pietro Parolin presides over the customary Mass on Ash Wednesday in Rome's Basilica of Santa Sabina in place of Pope Francis, who is resting due to acute knee pain doctors are treating. The Cardinal read the Pope's homily, which recalled this day of prayer and fasting for Ukraine.
By Vatican News staff writer

Following an ancient Ash Wednesday tradition, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State began the “stational” liturgy at the Church of Sant’Anselmo before leading a penitential procession down the street to the Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill where he presided over Mass. Pope Francis had been scheduled to preside, but as already announced last week, could not due to acute knee pain with doctors requesting he give his leg rest.

March 2nd this year marks the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period of prayer, fasting, abstinence, and good ‎works, in preparation for Christianity’s most solemn feast of Easter, which celebrates Jesus’s glorious ‎resurrection following His passion and death on the Cross. The imposition of ashes on the forehead or head on Ash Wednesday is a Biblical symbol of repentance, reminding the faithful of man’s sinfulness before God and his mortality. The priest who imposes the ashes says, “Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return."

Bishops ask Pope Francis to consecrate Ukraine and Russia to Immaculate Heart of Mary
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Mar 2, 2022 / 09:15 am

Ukraine’s Latin Rite Catholic bishops have asked Pope Francis to consecrate Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In a letter to the pope, the Ukrainian bishops said that they were writing “in these hours of immeasurable pain and terrible ordeal for our people” in response to many requests for the consecration.

“Responding to this prayer, we humbly ask Your Holiness to publicly perform the act of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Ukraine and Russia, as requested by the Blessed Virgin in Fatima,” said the letter, published on the bishops’ website on Ash Wednesday, March 2.

“May the Mother of God, Queen of Peace, accept our prayer: Regina pacis, ora pro nobis.”

Their request came as Russian forces moved to encircle the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, where multiple blasts were reported early Wednesday morning, and troops laid siege to Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Russian Orthodox priests: no call for peace should be rejected
02 March 2022, 18:22

Reconciliation, forgiveness, dialogue, and the full awareness that there can be no room for violence are underscored in an appeal for peace by a group of 233 clerics of the Russian Orthodox Church, who also expressed hopes that all soldiers, Russian and Ukrainian, can return home unharmed.
By Andrea De Angelis - Vatican City

A group of 233 priests and deacons of the Russian Orthodox Church has launched a strong appeal to all those who can bring an end to the war in Ukraine. They have described the situation as "fratricidal" and called for reconciliation and an immediate cease-fire. They write: "We mourn the ordeal to which our brothers and sisters in Ukraine were undeservedly subjected". The appeal came following the Sunday of the Last Judgement and in the week before Forgiveness Sunday (the two Sundays preceding Great Lent in the Eastern calendar).

The Last Judgement

Recalling that each person's life is a unique and priceless gift from God, the priests and deacons stress that the Last Judgement awaits all. "No earthly authority, no doctor, no guard," they read, "will protect us from this judgement. Concerned for the salvation of every person who considers himself a child of the Russian Orthodox Church, we do not want him to come to this judgement, carrying a heavy burden. Let us remember that the blood of Christ, shed by the Saviour for the life of the world, will be received in the sacrament of Communion by those who give murderous orders, not for life, but for eternal torment".

German Cardinal Woelki submits resignation to Pope Francis for 2nd time
By CNA Staff
Cologne, Germany, Mar 2, 2022 / 02:34 am

Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki has submitted his resignation for a second time to Pope Francis as leader of Germany’s Catholic archdiocese of Cologne.

The archdiocese announced the cardinal’s move on March 2, Ash Wednesday, the day that he returned to lead the archdiocese after a period of “prayer and reflection,” reported CNA Deutsch, CNA’s German-language news partner.

The Cologne archdiocese, which is Germany's largest and reportedly also its richest diocese, said that the pope had instructed the 65-year-old cardinal to resume his ministry on Wednesday, pending a decision on his resignation.

Woelki began his sabbatical at the end of September 2021 “at his own request,” after he was confirmed in office by Pope Francis, who had ordered an apostolic visitation amid fierce criticism of the archdiocese’s handling of abuse cases.

In a Lenten pastoral letter published on Wednesday, Woelki said: “Certainly, I realize that the situation has not become any easier since October last year. A time-out in itself does not solve any problems.”

Any reconciliation could “only be contemplated, attempted and concretely undertaken in cooperation,” not by taking time out from each other, the cardinal added.

Pope Francis accepts retirement of Peoria’s Bishop Jenky on 75th birthday
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Mar 3, 2022 / 05:55 am

Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Daniel Jenky as head of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, on Thursday, the day of Jenky’s 75th birthday.

Diocesan bishops are required by canon law to submit a letter of resignation to the pope when they are turning 75, but it is unusual for their retirement to be accepted the same day.

Jenky, who is a member of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, is automatically succeeded by Bishop Louis Tylka, who has been coadjutor of the Diocese of Peoria since 2020.

Tylka, a priest of Chicago archdiocese, was consecrated as a bishop on July 23, 2020, by Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop Jerome Listecki, and Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Jenky said: “Bishop Tylka has selflessly given himself in service to the people of the Diocese of Peoria since his ordination. I am confident that the faithful will find him to be a loving and dedicated shepherd.”

Jenky led the Peoria diocese for 20 years, during which time he opened the cause for beatification of popular media evangelist Archbishop Fulton Sheen.

Pope: Be close to those with cancer and support their families
04 March 2022, 12:17

Pope Francis pays tribute and offers encouragement to members of the Italian League for the Fight against Tumours, who are marking their recent 100th anniversary in assisting cancer patients and their families.
Vatican News staff writer

Meeting with the members of the Italian League for the Fight against Tumours, Pope Francis paid tribute to their century-long history in serving those struggling with cancer, along with the families who care for them. He noted how they have adapted to the changing times in society and health systems and served as a forerunner of modern-day palliative care. The Pope praised how the group has chosen over and over again to fight the battle against the disease together with patients and those who care for them, choosing to be a neighbor in the face of a culture

In conclusion, Pope Francis encouraged the League members to persevere in their service to others, and prayed that Saint Leopold Mandić, patron saint of cancer patients, accompany them from heaven.

Many seeing ‘luminous angels’ over Ukraine, says major archbishop
By CNA Staff
Kyiv, Ukraine, Mar 4, 2022 / 07:15 am

The leader of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church said on Friday that “many people” have told him that they have seen “luminous angels over the land of Ukraine.”

Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk was speaking in a video message recorded on March 4 in the besieged Ukrainian capital Kyiv, whose patron saint is St. Michael the Archangel.

“Here in Kyiv we perceive that the patron of our city is the Archangel Michael who with the cry ‘Who is like God?’ cast into the abyss Lucifer — the one who rose up against God’s truth and was the leader of the diabolical armies,” he said.

“We perceive today that the Archangel Michael together with the whole Heavenly Host is fighting for Ukraine. So many people from throughout Ukraine are turning to me saying that they saw luminous angels over the land of Ukraine.”

He added: “Today we pray: O Archangel Michael and all the Powers of Heaven, fight for Ukraine! Cast down that devil who is attacking us and killing us, bringing devastation and death!”

Social media users have shared unverified images purporting to show cloud formations resembling angels in Kyiv.

Hmmm...

Can a pope help Ukraine? (Interview)
I.Media for Aleteia - published on 03/04/22

For Bernard Lecomte, "Russia fascinates all the popes," but the Vatican must comfort the Catholics of Ukraine.

How much room does the Pope have to maneuver in the face of the Russian offensive in Ukraine? What is thought to be the power of Russian influence on the actions of the Pope and Vatican diplomacy? I.MEDIA interviewed journalist Bernard Lecomte, who has reported on numerous occasions in Eastern Europe.

He’s the author of a biography of John Paul II and of the book “The Pope who Conquered Communism” (“Le pape qui a vaincu le communisme,” 2019). He points out that from Moscow’s point of view, the Vatican cannot be considered a neutral body, given the important place of the Catholic Church in Ukraine.

Faced with this Russian offensive in Ukraine, has the Holy See found itself in the same state of perplexity as the diplomatic services of Western countries?

Lecomte: I think so. When I came to the Vatican, I was always struck by the fact that there were very few people who knew the USSR well or who know Russia today. This country fascinates all the popes, but there are very few specialists within the diplomatic apparatus of the Holy See. So they have probably been stunned by what is happening.

Fatima, First Saturdays and Russia’s conversion
Philip Kosloski - published on 03/04/22

It is often forgotten that Our Lady of Fatima requested the First Saturday devotion to be widely observed to ensure Russia's conversion.

When Our Lady of Fatima appeared to Sr. Lucia on December 10, 1925, the Virgin Mary requested the practice of the First Saturday devotion for the conversion of Russia.

This request was also connected to the famous “consecration of Russia” to the Immaculate Heart of Mary that is so often a point of debate among Fatima enthusiasts.

The Holy See has repeatedly insisted that the consecration of Russia has taken place, and that Sr. Lucia confirmed this fact to St. John Paul II.

Pope Francis: Real revolution means raising up the vulnerable
05 March 2022, 13:30

Pope Francis meets with a group from the “Project Agata Smeralda” Association, and says true revolution is carried out by those who daily seek to help the poor and marginalized to live according to their dignity as children of God.
By Vatican News staff reporter

The Agata Smeralda Association is a project that operates in the Brazilian favelas, and elsewhere in the world, and aims to help street children. There are at least 10,000 children in Brazil who are welcomed by missionaries and laypeople in 160 shelters located in Salvador di Bahia in the northeast of the country.

Thanks to the support of "long-distance adoption”, these children can benefit from adequate health care and have access to education. The project is also aided by the Italian City of Florence which gives support to the Family Shelter for single mothers at Itapúa.

Ukraine: Asian bishops join Pope urging end to Russian invasion
04 March 2022, 14:12

Cardinal Bo of Yangon has released a statement on behalf of Asia’s bishops, calling for an end to the Russian aggression that possibly could lead to a nuclear disaster.
By Robin Gomes

The bishops of Asia have joined Pope Francis in appealing to Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine and seek a peaceful resolution to all issues at the United Nations, warning that the possible use of weapons of mass destruction would lead to a nuclear holocaust.

“We join Pope Francis in appealing to the rulers of Russia and to all others who believe in the power of violence, to solve world problems through peaceful means and dialogue in the UN,” Myanmar Cardinal Charles Bo of Yangon said on Friday.
