Pope at Angelus: Let God's light surprise and reawaken our hearts
13 March 2022, 12:19

In his Sunday Gospel reflections for the Angelus, Pope Francis recalls the Apostles who witnessed the Transfiguration of Jesus, noting that we too are in the need of God's light that reawakens our desire to pray and serve others.
By Vatican News staff writer

Greeting pilgrims in Saint Peter's Square for the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis spoke about the day's Gospel reading on this Second Sunday of Lent that narrates the Lord's Transfiguration while praying on a mountain when He changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. And in the light of his glory Moses and Elijah appear, witnessed in awe by the apostles Peter, John and James. The Pope observed that in Luke's Gospel we read that the Apostles were "overcome by sleep" but then when "fully awake" saw the Lord's glory.

Cardinal Krajewski: 'I saw great suffering but strong faith in Ukraine'
13 March 2022, 09:16

Before leaving Ukraine Cardinal Konrad Krajewski recalls the profound suffering of the people, especially the women and children, but also their great faith and trust in the future.
By Benedetta Capelli

Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Papal Almoner, has expressed hopes that the sun will rise once again in war-torn Ukraine.

The Cardinal spoke to Vatican News by telephone as he was leaving Ukraine by car on Saturday. He spoke about his mission of Gospel charity, a journey made up of being with others in solidarity and hope, despite air raid sirens and the tried faces of so many women fleeing with children in their arms.

Q: Your Eminence, you are about to conclude your journey. How would you sum up your mission?

I went to Ukraine to support our brothers and sisters, to bring the Holy Father's blessing, to be close to them, to pray with them. So we met them along with various religious leaders, we were together... And then [I went to Ukraine] also to thank the people of good will who are offering their homes to refugees, the many volunteers in Ukraine and also the many donors.

There are large trucks filled with aid supplies that are constantly going to Kyiv, stopping a hundred kilometers away more or less. It has been a journey of faith, a Gospel journey, truly a religious mission.

Pope Francis' words against the religious justification for war
13 March 2022, 18:33
Editorial

The Pope's message is an appeal to stop "the unacceptable armed aggression" against Ukraine as he reminds us that those who support violence profane the name of God.
By Andrea Tornielli

"In the name of God, I ask you: stop this massacre!" exclaimed Francis during his Angelus on Sunday, 13 March, the ninth anniversary of his election as Bishop of Rome. During his appeal, the Pope recalled the victims of Mariupol, as well as the "barbarity of the killing of children, innocents and unarmed civilians". He also asked for an end to what he unequivocally called "unacceptable armed aggression" before it "reduces cities to cemeteries" and expressed his gratitude for the welcome given to the many refugees before, finally, asking that everyone multiply moments of prayer for peace.

In the final part of his message, Francis was clear and firm on the distorted use of religion to justify the ongoing massacres: "God is only the God of peace, he is not the God of war and those who support violence profane his name". These are the same expressions that have been used many times in recent years by the Pontiff and his predecessors, St John Paul II and Benedict XVI, to warn against the instrumental use of the name of God to justify hatred, violence and terrorism.

Pope to Russian Patriarch: 'Church uses language of Jesus, not of politics'
16 March 2022, 18:54

Pope Francis holds a video call with Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill to discuss the war in Ukraine, and calls on Church leaders to use the language of Jesus, not that of politics.
By Vatican News staff reporter

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, confirmed that a conversation took place in the early afternoon between Pope Francis and Orthodox Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

Mr. Bruni noted that Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, and Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Head of the External Relations Department of the Moscow Patriarchate, also attended the meeting.

War in Ukraine

The statement said their conversation focused “on the war in Ukraine and on the role of Christians and their pastors in doing everything to ensure that peace prevails.”

Pope Francis thanked the Patriarch for the meeting, motivated by the desire to point out, as shepherds of their people, a path to peace, to pray for the gift of peace and for a ceasefire.

The Pope said, in agreement with the Patriarch, that "The Church must not use the language of politics, but the language of Jesus.”

Pope Francis added that “we are shepherds of the same Holy People who believe in God, in the Holy Trinity, in the Holy Mother of God: that is why we must unite in the effort to aid peace, to help those who suffer, to seek ways of peace, and to stop the fire.”

Mr. Bruni also said the Pope and the Patriarch stressed the exceptional importance of the ongoing negotiation process, because, according to the Pope, "those who pay the price for war are the people; it is Russian soldiers and common people who are bombed and die."

Pope: Ukraine and Syria united in sorrow and suffering
16 March 2022, 16:17

Pope Francis sends a letter to participants at a Conference taking place in Damascus and dedicated to “listening, dialogue and the future of Christian communities” in the region. He assures Syrian Christians of the Church's concern for them and turns his thoughts also to Ukraine asking for prayers for peace.
By Linda Bordoni

Reassuring the Christian community in Syria that it is not forgotten, and that the Church remains particularly concerned for its welfare, Pope Francis conveyed his closeness to the people of the ravaged nation noting that the war, now in its 12th year, continues “to cause suffering, hunger, death and the ongoing flight of Syrians.”

In a letter read to the ensemble by his envoy, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, the Pope reminded the Christians of Syria that they “are the protagonists of the mission of Jesus in this land,” and said that great efforts are being made to “offer hope and future prospects to those who remain.”

The Conference is entitled “The Church as a House of Charity – Synodality and Coordination.” It is organized by the Congregation for the Eastern Churches of which Cardinal Sandri is Prefect, and sees the participation of Caritas Syria and other charitable agencies.

Vatican Radio increases shortwave broadcasts to Ukraine and Russia
16 March 2022, 13:13

From next Monday the Pope’s radio station will expand its Ukrainian and Russian programmes. The increase of shortwave frequencies aims to empower the Radio’s outreach in its mission to communicate the Gospel message and to “read” current events through this perspective.

From Monday, 21 March, Vatican Radio will increase its shortwave broadcasts to Ukraine and Russia. In addition to the two daily broadcasts (afternoon and evening) in the two languages, the morning programmes to Moscow and Kyiv will last twenty minutes longer.

"The decision,” Massimiliano Menichetti, head of Vatican Radio Vatican News explains, “was taken with the agreement of the entire management team of the Dicastery for Communication, at this time when war is raging, in order to better respond to our mission: to bring hope, the Pope's words and the reading of facts through the light of the Gospel to the whole world.”

In these past weeks, he added, thanks to a network of direct contacts that support the work of our reporters, we are trying to give comfort to those who are suffering and to ensure timely information.

The frequencies of Vatican Radio, the pages and posts of Vatican News in 51 languages (including English and Italian in sign language) aim to not leave anyone alone, even in the awareness of the power of prayer".

What has Pope Francis changed about Mass intentions? A CNA Explainer
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome Newsroom, Mar 16, 2022 / 08:47 am

One way Catholics can pray for people in need, both the living and dead, is through having a Mass said for that intention.

According to Church law, priests may accept a donation — often around $10 per Mass — for offering the celebration for that intention. If someone is unable to provide the donation, but would really like a Mass intention to be said, the stipend can also be waived.

The law does not say how many Mass intentions a priest or Catholic parish can accept, but stipulates that the number should not be more Masses than can be reasonably said in one year’s time.

So what happens if a priest, even with the best of intentions, accepts Mass intention offerings he cannot fulfill within the course of a year?

That’s the subject of a clarification to canon law which the Vatican published this week, following a small change Pope Francis made last month.

Pope highlights St. Joseph’s ‘father’s heart and creative courage'
17 March 2022, 11:01

Pope Francis meets with a delegation of the General Chapter of Augustinian Recollects, and holds up the figure of St. Joseph as a model for religious and priests.
By Robin Gomes

Ahead of Saturday’s solemnity of St. Joseph, Pope Francis held out Jesus' foster father as a model for Christians, drawing attention particularly to his “father’s heart” and “creative courage”.

The Pope made the reference to St. Joseph on Thursday in his remarks to some 50 members of the Order of Augustinian Recollects, who began their 56th General Chapter in Rome on 1 March.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph
17 March 2022, 12:18

The message of Our Lady of Fatima is not intended to satisfy apocalyptic curiosities about the end of the world, but launches a heartfelt appeal for conversion so that humanity may be saved from the selfishness that destroys. At a time marked by devastating wars, Pope Francis will consecrate Russia
By Sergio Centofanti

"In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph!"  These were the words of Our Lady to the shepherd children of Fatima over 100 years ago, words that give hope in the midst of the clamour of wars. On March 25, Pope Francis will consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. At Wednesday’s General Audience, he prayed intensely for peace: "Lord Jesus, who died in a mother’s arms in a bunker in Kharkiv, have mercy on us… Stop the hand of Cain!”  The meekness of prayer overcomes the arrogance of evil.

Archbishop Welby discusses war in Ukraine with Russian Patriarch Kirill
17 March 2022, 14:34

In a video call to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill of Moscow agree on the need to achieve a lasting peace.
By Vatican News staff reporter

After meeting Pope Francis via video on Wednesday afternoon, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia also held an online conversation with the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Right Reverend Justin Welby, to discuss the urgent need for peace in Ukraine.

During the conversation, the head of the Anglican Communion expressed his grave concern about the war in Ukraine, which he said is a great tragedy.

War is not the solution

According to a statement from Lambeth Palace, the Archbishop reiterated that war and violence is never an answer to disputes.

Archbishop Welby emphasized the need to find ways to live as neighbours in Europe without the aggression and human suffering, which have been too much part of European history.

Update:  Vatican finance trial

‘I am not afraid’ of the truth, says Cardinal Becciu in testimony at Vatican finance trial
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Mar 17, 2022 / 10:50 am

Cardinal Angelo Becciu asserted his innocence in testimony before the Vatican court on Thursday.

“I am here with my head held high. With a clear conscience,” the cardinal said in a declaration on March 17. “I defend my right to innocence.”

“I declare my total availability to seek and to tell the truth with you. I am not afraid of it,” Becciu told judges as he took the stand for the first time.

The hearing marked the first day of testimony in a landmark trial of 10 defendants accused of financial malfeasance, mostly in connection with a London property purchased as an intended investment by the Vatican Secretariat of State.

Becciu, who was the second-ranking official at the Secretariat of State from 2011 to 2018, faces charges of embezzlement, abuse of office, and subornation of perjury, the crime of persuading a person to commit perjury.

Pope: Only love can save the human family
18 March 2022, 11:54

Pope Francis encourages participants at a meeting organized by the Gravissimum Educationis Pontifical Foundation to continue in the path of educating young people for democracy and a civilization of love.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis, on Friday, addressed participants at an international congress on “Educating for Democracy in a Fragmented World,” promoted by the Gravissimum Educationis Pontifical Foundation.

At the start of his address, the Holy Father turned his thoughts to the war in Ukraine, responding in an off-the-cuff manner to a letter written by Yuriy Pidlisnyy, the head of the Commission for the Family and Laity of the Ukrainian-Greek Catholic Church, head of the Chair of Political Science at the Ukrainian Catholic University and head of the Educating for Democracy initiative.

“We are used to hearing news of the wars, but far away,” the Pope said, adding that now the war has come closer and it makes us think of how savage human nature can be.

He said that we talk about education, and when one thinks of education one thinks of children and young people. “We think of so many soldiers who are sent to the front, very young, Russian soldiers, poor things. Let's think of so many young Ukrainian soldiers, let's think of the inhabitants, the young people, boys, girls... This is happening close to us,” the Pope said.

Pope: Walking together is the essence of religious life
18 March 2022, 13:20

Pope Francis says Institutes of Consecrated Life are “repositories of a great heritage and of a rich tradition of synodality,” in an audience with participants in the General Chapter of the Sisters of St Dorothy.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis welcomed a group of Dorothean Sisters to the Vatican on Friday, on the occasion of their General Congregation, which opened on March 3. In his address to the sisters, Pope Francis noted that the experience of the Chapter in religious life “is a concrete way of implementing synodality: a strong time of fraternity, of listening, of dialogue, of discernment, all in the light and with the anointing of the Holy Spirit.”
