Canadian First Nations peoples share their stories with Pope
31 March 2022, 17:59

Pope Francis receives a group of about 20 representatives of Canada’s First Nations peoples Thursday morning, having previously met with representatives of the Inuit and Métis peoples. On Friday, the Holy Father will receive all three groups together in a public audience.
By Benedetta Capelli

An “atmosphere of listening and closeness” marked the meeting Thursday morning between Pope Francis and a group of some 20 delegates of Canada’s First Nations peoples, who were accompanied by several Canadian bishops. It was the Pope’s third visit with delegations of indigenous Canadians, having met earlier this week with representatives of the Mètis and Inuit peoples in separate audiences. On Friday, the Holy Father will meet with all three groups together for a public audience in which the Pope is expected to address the delegates.

Following the meeting on Thursday, First Nations delegates dressed in traditional attire met with members of the press outside St Peter's Square to talk about their experience. “It’s a special day," said Regional Chief Gerald Antonie, the delegation lead, noting that Pope Francis had listened attentively to their words. “The things that happened to us should never have ever happened…” he continued, adding “We’re here to tell you the truth.” His words were also marked by pain for the past, for the abuses that took place, for the many victims of the so-called residential schools.

Pope Francis appoints new bishop of Lourdes
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Mar 30, 2022 / 06:30 am

Pope Francis named on Wednesday a new bishop of the French Catholic diocese that is home to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, one of the world’s most-visited Marian shrines.

Msgr. Jean-Marc Micas was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Tarbes-et-Lourdes on March 30.

Micas currently serves as the French provincial superior of the Society of Priests of Saint-Sulpice (PSS), a society of apostolic life founded in 1642 that focuses on priestly formation.

The 58-year-old priest will fill the vacancy in the Lourdes diocese left when Bishop Nicolas Brouwet was reassigned as bishop of Nîmes in August 2021.

Pope Francis: Armida Barelli is a model for politically engaged Catholic women
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Mar 31, 2022 / 11:30 am

Pope Francis has written a new book preface commending the example of Venerable Armida Barelli, a lay leader who formed generations of Catholic women to be civically engaged in the early 20th century, including the pope’s grandmother.

The pope said that Barelli, who will be beatified in April, “fostered the conscious participation of women in social and political life, making a decisive contribution to the establishment of democracy in Italy.”

“The Church now points to her as a model of a woman who in her own humanity, with the intelligence and gifts that God gave her, was able to bear witness to God’s love.”

Ahead of Barelli’s beatification in Milan Cathedral on April 30, Pope Francis wrote a preface to a biography written by the vice postulator for her sainthood cause, which was published in Italian on March 29.

Behind the Order of Malta’s reform debate is a clash of two visions
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Rome Newsroom, Mar 31, 2022 / 04:42 am

Pope Francis received two drafts of a new constitution for the Order of Malta at an audience with members of the 1,000-year-old institution on March 19. He reserved the right to read them calmly and then make his final decisions.

To understand what’s at stake, it’s essential to know how the order is structured. The organization’s members belong to three classes.

The First Class consists of the Knights of Justice, or professed knights, and Professed Conventual Chaplains, who take the religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. They are defined as religious but not required to live in a community.

The Second Class is composed of Knights and Dames in Obedience, who promise to strive for Christian perfection in the spirit of the order.

The Third Class comprises lay members who neither take vows nor make promises but are committed to living a fully Catholic life according to the order’s principles.

Pope: Person with autism can be a Good Samaritan
01 April 2022, 12:01

On Friday, the eve of World Autism Awareness Day, Pope Francis met a delegation from the Italian Autism Foundation (FIA). He encouraged a culture of inclusion, participation, and solidarity for those suffering from the disorder.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis on Friday urged for a culture of inclusion, belonging and solidarity for persons with autism so that they not only receive attention but also participate in and contribute to society. He made the exhortation in his meeting with over 200 representatives of the Italian Autism Foundation (FIA), on the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, April 2, Saturday.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication.

The Holy Father thanked the foundation saying through their research projects and initiatives in favour of the weakest and most disadvantaged, they are making a valuable contribution to the fight against the "throw-away culture prevalent in our society that is too focused on competition and profit."   He acknowledged, "We are victims of this throw-away culture.”

“The Samaritan can be the person with a disability, with autism, who becomes a neighbour to others, putting his or her talents at the service of the community

Pope urges adherence to synodal decision concerning celebration of Holy Qurbana
01 April 2022, 15:19

In a letter to the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly, Pope Francis invites the faithful to adhere to the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Archepiscopal Church concerning the form of celebration of the Holy Qurbana prior to Easter 2022.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis has addressed a paternal exhortation to the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly, urging adherence to “the synodal decision concerning the form of celebration of the Holy Qurbana by Easter 2022” as determined by the Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Archiepiscopal Church.

In a letter dated 25 March, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of Our Lord, the Pope addressed a dispute that has arisen within India’s largest Eastern Church, following the decision by the Syro-Malabar Church Synod of Bishops “not only to approve certain liturgical texts but also the form of celebration in the way that it had been proposed some years ago.”

The Pope recalls that with that decision, “fully aware of the different traditions with the diverse contexts of your Church, all were asked to take a step back from their respective styles of celebration in order to offer a sign of communion born of the fact that everyone involved sacrificed something particularly their own, out of love and witness to something greater.”

Pope in Malta in the footsteps of Saint Paul
01 April 2022, 12:27

Pope Francis visits the Mediterranean Island nation of Malta from 2 – 3 April. He will visit the capital Valletta, as well as Rabat, Floriana and the island of Gozo.
By Benedict Mayaki

Pope Francis embarks on his 36th Apostolic journey abroad this weekend with a visit to Malta, an island nation located in the central Mediterranean Sea.

The 2 – 3 April visit, themed, “They showed us unusual kindness” (Acts 28:2), was originally scheduled to take place in May 2020 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This will be the fourth visit of a Pontiff to Malta. St. John Paul II visited twice (in 1990 and 2001) and Pope Benedict XVI visited in 2010, on the occasion of the 1,950th anniversary of the shipwreck of St. Paul.

Pope Francis’ trip to Malta -- April 2-3, 2022

Vatican publishes schedule for papal trip to Malta
By Junno Arocho Esteves
Feb 25, 2022 | Catholic News Service

ROME — Pope Francis’s April visit to Malta, while brief, will include stops at three cities and an island, as well as meetings with authorities, local Catholics and migrants.

The Vatican Feb. 25 released the pope’s schedule for the April 2-3 trip, which also includes a visit to the grotto where St. Paul stayed when he and his companions were shipwrecked.

Malta is a Mediterranean archipelago made up of three main islands, and more than 90 percent of the country’s 460,000 people profess to be Catholic.

The pope’s long-awaited trip to Malta was originally planned for 2020 to commemorate the 1,950th anniversary of St. Paul’s arrival. However, the trip was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Upon his arrival in Malta, the pope will meet with Maltese President George Vella and Prime Minister Robert Abela as well as with government authorities and members of the country’s diplomatic corps.

On his final day, Pope Francis will visit St. Paul’s grotto and celebrate Mass in Floriana. He will also meet with migrants at the John XIII Peace Lab’s center for migrants in Hal Far, before returning to Rome.

Malta — along with Italy, Spain and Greece — continues to be a major point of arrival for many migrants crossing the sea from North Africa, and current European Union policies have left these countries on their own to rescue, shelter, verify and try to integrate these migrants.

Here is the detailed schedule released by the Vatican Feb. 25. Times listed are local, with Eastern Daylight Time in parenthesis:

Saturday, April 2 (Rome, Malta)

— 8:30 a.m. (2:30 a.m.) Departure from Rome’s Fiumicino airport.
— 10 a.m. (4 a.m.) Arrival at Malta international airport. Welcoming ceremony.
— 10:50 a.m. (4:50 a.m.) Meeting with President George Vella at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta.
— 11:35 a.m. (5:35 a.m.) Meeting with Prime Minister Robert Abela at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta.
— 11:50 a.m. (5:50 a.m.) Meeting with authorities and members of the diplomatic corps at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta. Speech by pope.
— 3:50 p.m. (9:50 a.m.) Departure by catamaran for Gozo.
— 5 p.m. (11 a.m.) Arrival at Mgarr Harbor.
— 5:30 p.m. (11:30 a.m.) Prayer meeting at the National Shrine of “Ta’ Pinu” in Gozo. Homily by pope.
— 6:45 p.m. (12:45 p.m.) Departure by ferry for Malta.
— 7:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m.) Arrival at Cirkeww Harbor.

Ukrainian refugees bid farewell to Pope as he departs for Malta

Pope Francis is traveling to the Mediterranean island of Malta for a two-day visit focused on evangelization and the need to welcome, promote, protect and integrate migrants and refugees.
By Linda Bordoni

The Papal ITA Airways plane carrying Pope Francis, a number of members of the Curia, and 74 journalists took off from Rome’s Fiumicino airport at about 8.30 am on Saturday morning.

This Apostolic Journey to Malta represents the Pope’s 36th visit abroad and is his first journey of 2022. It is a visit twice postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Malta is Europe’s most southern country and holds a strategic position in the Mediterranean Sea. Of its 475,000 inhabitants, 90% profess to be Catholic.

Pope Francis will return to the Vatican on Sunday evening.

As he always does before embarking on an Apostolic Visit, he prayed before the beloved icon of Salus Popoli Romani in Rome’s Basilica of Saint Mary Major entrusting his journey to Our Lady.

Refugees from Ukraine bid the Pope farewell

Early Saturday morning, before leaving Casa Santa Marta, the Pope greeted some refugee families from Ukraine hosted by the Community of Sant'Egidio, together with the Papal Almoner, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski.

While greeting journalists aboard the papal flight from Rome to Malta, Pope Francis was asked whether he is considering the offer to visit the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, and responded that it is on the table.

The Holy Father was beginning his full first day of his visit to the Mediterranean island nation of Malta.

As is customary for Pope Francis' Apostolic Journeys, the Holy Father welcomed the journalists aboard the flight and briefly greeted each individually.

Pope in Malta: Amid winds of war, a call for shared future of peace
02 April 2022, 12:10

At the start of his Apostolic Journey to Malta on Saturday, Pope Francis holds his first public event in the island nation with the country’s authorities and the diplomatic corps, calling for nations to reject the "icy winds of war" and embrace a future of peace.
By Robin Gomes

Pope Francis wishes that Malta, in the heart of the Mediterranean,  may continue to foster the heartbeat of hope, care for life, acceptance of others and yearning for peace. Delivering his first public discourse on Maltese soil (click here for full text), addressed to the country’s authorities and the diplomatic corps in the capital Valetta, he used the analogy of the compass rose, or “rose of winds” to encourage Malta and Europe on the path of peace, legality, respect for life and human dignity and open itself to people on the move.

Pope Francis who is on Saturday kicked off the 36th apostolic journey of his pontificate, April 2-3, referred to the four cardinal points of the compass rose to describe four fundamental influences for Malta’s social and political life.

Love of God is what drives our joy. Pope Francis gave this powerful reminder his first day in Malta during the prayer meeting at the National Marian Shrine of Ta’ Pinu on the Maltese island of Gozo on Saturday.

The Holy Father is visiting the Mediterranean island of Malta, marking his 36th Apostolic Visit abroad. On Saturday, he travelled to Gozo, home to Malta’s most important Marian shrine, where both Pope St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI took pilgrimages during their Apostolic Journeys to the archipelago.

Pope Francis prays and meets sick persons at St Paul’s Grotto

Pope Francis prays at St. Paul's Grotto in Rabat, and prays at one of Malta's most venerated sites, where the Apostle to the Gentiles is believed to have stayed for three months and baptized the land's first Christians.
By Lisa Zengarini

After meeting privately with a group of Jesuits in the Nunciature, Pope Francis began his second day's Apostolic journey to Malta on Sunday with a visit to St. Paul’s Grotto, in Rabat, where he stopped to pray the Apostle, greeted religious leaders, and met a group of sick persons.

Tradition has that the Apostle stayed here three months after shipwrecking on the island on his way to Rome and preached, baptized and healed the sick sowing the seeds of Christianity in Malta.

The site, which is believed to have miraculous qualities, was also visited by Pope St. John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI during their Apostolic Journeys to the island country.

Pope at Mass in Malta: With Jesus, a new different life is always possible
03 April 2022, 10:50

Pope Francis celebrates Mass in Floriana during his Apostolic Visit to Malta, and reminds Christians that Jesus always offers us the possibility of a new life.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

With Jesus Christ, a new and different life is always possible. Pope Francis stressed this during his second day in Malta during his Mass for the nation's faithful in the city of Floriana on Sunday.

The Holy Father is visiting the Mediterranean island nation, marking his 36th Apostolic Visit abroad. His visit concludes on Sunday afternoon, following a meeting with refugees, and he then returns to Rome in the evening.

In the homily, the Holy Father recalled the day's Gospel according to St. John about the woman caught in adultery, and highlighted the Scribes and Pharisees thought they already knew everything and did not need the teaching of Jesus.

The woman's accusers, the Pope said, disregard their own faults, yet are very concerned with those of others. Appearing righteous and religious, the Pope said, they wish to condemn and test Jesus "under the cloak of their reputation as devout and religious men."

Pope in Malta: Our warm welcome to others can help save the world
03 April 2022, 18:04

Pope Francis visits with migrants at the John XXIII Peace Lab Centre during his final event in Malta, and warns humanity that we face a shipwreck of civilization, which threatens not only migrants but all of us, if we do not conduct ourselves with kindness and humanity.
By Thaddeus Jones

On Sunday afternoon, Pope Francis visited Malta's "Pope John XIII Peace Laboratory," founded in 1971 by Franciscan friar Dionysius Mintoff, following an appeal made by Pope John XXIII, who called for the world to reflect on peace.

The Peace Lab runs an extensive adult education programme and assists people of all backgrounds and cultures as a way to show solidarity to those in need and offer an oasis where people can encounter others with openness and warmth.

The gathering with Pope Francis started with introductory words by the 91-year-old founder, Father Mintoff, who explained how the Pope's visit helps strengthen the faith that inspires their work in helping those fleeing war and famine.
