Pope at Mass: 'Divine Mercy opens us to suffering of others'
24 April 2022, 10:39

Pope Francis delivers the homily at Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday in St. Peter’s Basilica, and reflects on Jesus’ post-Resurrection exhortation to His disciples: “Peace be with you.”
By Devin Watkins

For the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic, Mass was celebrated in St. Peter's Basilica on Divine Mercy Sunday, after the feast was celebrated for the last two years in the nearby Church of the Holy Spirit in the Saxon District.

Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization, presided over the Mass, which saw Pope Francis participate and deliver the homily.

The Pope focused on the three times Jesus spoke the words “Peace be with you” to the disciples after His death and resurrection.

He said that Christians find that those words of God’s mercy “give joy, then grant forgiveness, and finally offer comfort in every difficulty.”

The original Image of Divine Mercy: It's not where you might think
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vilnius, Lithuania, Apr 24, 2022 / 06:03 am

Among Catholic devotions, the Divine Mercy message is well-known: the iconic image of Christ, with rays of red and white pouring from his heart; St. Faustina, called the "Apostle of Divine Mercy;" and the Basilica of Divine Mercy in Krakow, Poland.

But what you might not know is that more than 450 miles north of Krakow, in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, there is another Sanctuary of Divine Mercy, one which houses the first image of the merciful Jesus created, and the only Image of Divine Mercy St. Faustina herself ever saw.

Archbishop Gintaras Grusas of Vilnius told CNA that the city, often called the "City of Mercy," is not only "a place of the Divine Mercy revelations, but also a place that is in need of mercy, throughout history, and a place that in the last couple decades has been a place where we need to show mercy."

24 April 2022, 12:15

At the Regina Coeli prayer on Divine Mercy Sunday, Pope Francis says the Risen Jesus wishes to return to stay with us and only waits for us to seek Him, since He is always ready to help us overcome our fears and unbelief.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis led the midday recitation of the Regina Coeli prayer in St. Peter's Square with forty thousand pilgrims onhand on this Divine Mercy Sunday.

The Pope participated and gave the homily at the morning Mass that took place earlier in the Basilica with the presence of 8,500 faithful, including around 300 Missionaries of Mercy called to Rome for the weekend.

Pope to Patriarch Kirill: May we become peacemakers for Ukraine
25 April 2022, 11:03

Pope Francis sends his Easter greetings to Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, and prays for the people of Ukraine as they long for a “new dawn that will end the darkness of war.”
By Salvatore Cernuzio

“Dear Brother! May the Holy Spirit transform our hearts and make us true peacemakers, especially for war-torn Ukraine, so that the great Easter passage from death to new life in Christ may become a reality for the Ukrainian people, who long for a new dawn that will end the darkness of war.”

Pope Francis penned those words to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, as Christians who follow the Julian calendar celebrated Easter on Sunday.

The Pope’s brief letter of Easter greetings was sent also to other Patriarchs of Eastern Churches, and was published on the Moscow Patriarchate’s website.

Pope Francis encourages Irish students to promote culture of encounter
25 April 2022, 11:16

Pope Francis spurs Catholic students from Queen’s University in Belfast to cultivate the culture of encounter so as to contribute to building up Ireland’s noble traditions of hospitality, reconciliation and fidelity to the Gospel.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis on Monday received in audience a group of students from the Catholic Chaplaincy at Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as they celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Chaplaincy. In his prepared remarks that were handed over to the group, the Holy Father encouraged them to cultivate the culture of encounter in their academic community.

“If we truly believe in Jesus, we must do what Jesus does: encounter others, encounter our neighbours, in order to share with them the saving truth of the Gospel," Pope Francis wrote.

“The Christian faith is fundamentally about an encounter with Jesus Christ”

Pope: Too many people are still trapped in slavery
25 April 2022, 11:20

Pope Francis receives participants in the "International Trinitarian Solidarity“ conference in audience in the Vatican, and points to the dramatic actuality of their charism that promotes action against religious persecution and solidarity with victims of slavery, oppression, exclusion, and persecution.
By Linda Bordoni

“Your charism is of flagrant actuality, unfortunately!" Pope Francis told members of “Trinitarian International Solidarity” gathered in the Vatican on Monday.

He said our time "boasts of having abolished slavery, when, in reality, there are too many men and women, even children, reduced to living in inhumane conditions, enslaved”

Trinitarian International Solidarity is an Order committed to incarnating the Trinitarian charism in the specific area of liberation on behalf of those, who because of their Christian faith, are reduced to slavery, oppression, exclusion, or persecution.

Its members, in Rome for a conference, operate across the globe in collaboration with like-minded organizations and the Institutes and Laity of the Trinitarian Family, promoting solidarity with those who are persecuted or enslaved, favouring dialogue and tolerance.

Pope to Missionaries of Mercy: Show the face of God's boundless mercy to all
25 April 2022, 12:01

Pope Francis welcomes Missionaries of Mercy from around the world, and encourages them to receive warmly those seeking God's mercy and to offer consolation to the sad and lonely, offering the biblical figure Ruth as an inspiration for their ministry.
By Thaddeus Jones

Welcoming the Missionaries of Mercy from around the world in the Paul VI Audience Hall on Monday, Pope Francis explained how he wanted to bring them back to Rome as a way to renew their ministry of being instruments of God's mercy.

Saying their ministry is the one closest to his heart, the Pope recalled that he even had their fundamental role included in the new Apostolic Constitution on the Roman Curia, "Praedicate Evangelium", under the section focusing on evangelization.

He said they are now part of the structure of the Church, and hopefully will grow in number as Bishops identify priests "who are holy, merciful, ready for forgiveness, in order to become full-fledged missionaries of Mercy.  "Pope Francis instituted the role of the Missionaries of Mercy six years ago when he met them in Rome during the Jubilee Year of Mercy in 2016 to give them their mandate to witness around the world the closeness of God and His love, mercy and forgiveness.

The Missionaries of Mercy offer a special ministry of outreach, hearing confessions and finding new ways to proclaim, express and bring God's mercy to all. They also have special faculties to give absolution to serious sins that ordinarly would require consultation and permission from the local bishop or the Holy See.

Pope Francis on Monday expressed his closeness with the families of the victims of Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday bombings 3 years ago, and urged the country's authorities to unveil the truth behind the attacks, saying it will usher in peace.

He also prayed that the country be able to tide over its worst economic crisis in living memory.

The Pope was addressing some 3,500 Sri Lankan Catholics working in Italy, including a delegation of the families of victims and survivors of the 2019 terrorist bomb attacks, led by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith of Colombo.

Pope Francis cancels day’s activities due to knee pain, says Vatican
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Apr 26, 2022 / 05:26 am

Pope Francis canceled his engagements on Tuesday due to ongoing knee pain, the Holy See press office said.

“Due to pain in his knee, and on medical advice, Pope Francis has interrupted the activities planned for today, including participation in the Council of Cardinals, a new session of which is underway these days,” the press office said on April 26.

Francis, 85, has been suffering from pain in his right knee, causing him to take smaller roles in some liturgies and to remain seated more often.

His agenda was cleared on April 22 for medical checkups, and he preached at, but did not preside over, Mass for the Octave Day of Easter on April 24.

Pope Francis updates canon law on dismissal from religious institutes
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Apr 26, 2022 / 09:35 am

Pope Francis issued an apostolic letter on Tuesday bringing Church law up to date on the rules for dismissal from religious institutes, in light of the updated penal law on sanctions related to clerical sexual abuse and other crimes.

The letter, known as Recognitum librum VI and issued motu proprio (on the pope’s “own impulse”) on April 26, modifies one sentence from canon 695 of the Code of Canon Law.

The pope explained that the modification makes the line consistent with the major revisions made last year to Book VI of the code’s penal law, which classified some crimes differently and introduced new crimes.

Pope at Audience: The beauty of bonds that unite generations
27 April 2022, 10:03

By Vatican News staff reporter

In his continuing catechesis on the meaning and value of old age in the light of God’s word, Pope Francis reflected on the figure of the widow Naomi as presented in the biblical Book of Ruth, which he called “a jewel of the Bible.”

He told those gathered at Wednesday’s General Audience in St Peter’s Square that this beautiful story “sheds light on the beauty of family bonds,” and invited the faithful to “rediscover the Book of Ruth.”

Pope: Transform mindsets of war into plans for peace
27 April 2022, 01:00

In a video message to the US National Catholic Congress on Hispanic Ministry - taking place in Washington, DC - Pope Francis invites participants to reflect on the need to be Christians who can create bridges in all sectors of society.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis has again seized the opportunity to call on humanity to change its mindset and to plan for peace.

Addressing participants in a Catholic National Congress on Hispanic Ministry, he notes that we are living an “absurd time in which, without having yet come out of a pandemic that has afflicted all humanity with great suffering and sorrow, we find ourselves in the midst of the suffering and tragedy of a war.”

“Every war is born of injustice, every war, including those that at times we wage in our families and communities, which are fought in silence; they too are born of injustice.”

The Congress, entitled Raíces y Alas 2022 [Roots and Wings 2022], has been convened from 26 to 30 April on the theme “Prophetic Voices: Being bridges for a new era”.

St. John Paul II’s long-time secretary visited Pope emeritus Benedict XVI on Wednesday.

Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz met with the pope emeritus at the Vatican on April 27, the eighth anniversary of the Polish pope’s canonization.

The Archdiocese of Kraków, southern Poland, said that Dziwisz, who led the archdiocese from 2005 to 2016, celebrated Mass at the tomb of St. John Paul II in St. Peter’s Basilica.

The cardinal then greeted Benedict XVI at his Vatican residence, the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery. The German theologian succeeded John Paul II as pope in 2005 and retired in 2013.

Pope Francis canonized St. John Paul II, who led the Catholic Church from 1978 to 2005, on April 27, 2014.

The pope recalled the anniversary at this Wednesday general audience.

By Devin Watkins

A 100-member-strong delegation of The Papal Foundation is on pilgrimage to Rome this week, meeting with Pope Francis on Thursday.

The Pope welcomed the Foundation’s members, trustees, and stewards to the Vatican, and thanked them for their “generous support provided both to me and to the Church in so many areas of the world.”

“As we celebrate the Lord’s victory over sin and death and His gift of new life in this holy season of Easter, it is my hope that the joy of the resurrection will always fill your hearts, and that your visit to the tombs of the apostles and martyrs will enhance your fidelity to the Lord and His Church.”

War in Ukraine, climate change top agenda for Council of Cardinals
28 April 2022, 12:03

The Council of Cardinals meets with Pope Francis for the first time since the publication of the Apostolic Constitution “Praedicate evangelium: On the Roman Curia and its service to the Church in the World.”
By Christopher Wells

The war in Ukraine, climate change, and the role of women in the Church were among the pressing topics of discussion at this week’s meeting of the Council of Cardinals, which took place in the Vatican with the participation of Pope Francis.

It was the first meeting of the Council since the publication, in March, of the Apostolic Constitution Praedicate evangelium, which reforms the Curia in light of its service to the Church in the modern world.

The 41st meeting of the Council was opened by the coordinator, Cardinal Oscar Maradiaga, who offered a reflection on the situation in Ukraine and the resulting socio-political, ecclesial, and ecumenical situation.

Pope Francis, for his part, informed the Council of the initiatives, variously undertaken by himself, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the Secretariat of State, to promote peace. The Members of the Council offered their support and encouragement for the Holy Father in his "tireless" efforts to resolve the conflict.

Ex-director says Pope Francis wanted Vatican financial watchdog to help close London deal
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Apr 28, 2022 / 09:05 am

The former director of the Vatican’s internal financial watchdog said on Wednesday that he acted correctly to investigate a London property deal and had no power to stop it.

He also said that Pope Francis wanted his office to support the Vatican Secretariat of State’s negotiations in the final part of the deal.

Tommaso Di Ruzza was questioned during an April 27 hearing in the ongoing Vatican trial to prosecute 10 people on criminal charges mostly related to the Secretariat of State’s purchase of an investment property in London.

The trial will continue on May 5 with the questioning of Cardinal Angelo Becciu.

Pope to Protection Commission: All abuse unacceptable, Church must be trustworthy
29 April 2022, 13:01

Addressing the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, Pope Francis requests an annual report on the Church's safeguarding initiatives to help competent authorities respond to allegations of abuse on the part of clergy, and praises the work being done by the Commission.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Abuse in any form is unacceptable.

This was at the heart of Pope Francis' address Friday morning to the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors at the conclusion of their plenary meeting.

The Pope decried clerical sexual abuse and stressed the individual responsibility of each member of the Church to prevent abuse and work for justice and healing. The Holy Father also expressed his direct availability to the Commission, to ensure they maintain their freedom to help and act.

He also requested the Commission provide him with an annual report on the Church’s initiatives for the protection of minors and vulnerable adults, in an effort to provide greater transparency and accountability.
