Pope encourages French youth to build on the heritage of holiness
14 May 2022, 13:19

Pope Francis meets with young pilgrims from the French town of Viviers, the hometown of Charles de Foucauld and Marie Rivier who will be canonized on Sunday, and invites young people to build on their heritage of holiness.
By Tiziana Campisi

Pope Francis on Saturday welcomed young pilgrims from the Diocese of Viviers, France, who are in Rome for the canonization on Sunday of Charles de Foucauld, Marie Rivier and Fr. Gabriel Longueville, all three who hail their diocese.

The Pope highlighted how the three Blesseds to be declared Saints offer examples the faithful can follow in their own faith journey.
The legacy of the three soon-to-be Saints are Fr. Charles de Foucauld, who went to the Sahara and lived among the Tuareg, Sr. Marie Rivier, who founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, and Fr. Gabriel Longueville, beatified as a martyr in 2019 who was an old acquaintance of Pope Francis before he became Pope during his years in Argentina.

The Pope described Fr. Longueville's self-sacrifice and attention to the poorest in the parish where he worked "a model for the priests of his homeland." He also added how "this succession of blesseds and future saints clearly shows the fruitfulness" of the Diocese of Viviers, hoping that "this patrimony of holiness" will be preserved and may grow.
Speaking about the figures of Charles de Foucauld and Marie Rivier, the Pope said:

“My wish for you today is to learn from Charles de Foucauld in order to have that experience of God that led him to evangelize by his presence. It is a discreet form of evangelization, but a very demanding one, because it requires the witness of a consistent life, that is, one truly conforming to the aspirations of every person loved by God and called to something other than fleeting pleasures or immediate and visible results.”

Pope Francis: To be a teacher is to live a mission
14 May 2022, 13:25

Pope Francis greets Sisters from the Maestre Pie Filippini Institute, and pilgrims from the Italian dioceses of Viterbo and Civitavecchia-Tarquinia, which included children making their First Communion, and underlines that we cannot be content with "teaching" Jesus if we do not bear witness to Him.
By Vatican News staff reporter

The Sisters and pilgrims were gathered in the Vatican to mark the 350th anniversary of the birth of St Lucia Filippini, their foundress and an educator who put Jesus at the centre of her life.

Teaching and mission

Reflecting on the work of the Institute and the word Maestre, which means teachers, the Pope focused on a proverb which says that "one does not teach what one knows, but what one is.”

He explained that “we transmit to others what we are inside. It is not enough to fill one's head with ideas, that is not educating; to educate is to transmit life.”

“To be a teacher is to live a mission,” he said.

He urged the Sisters to follow the example of their Foundress, who he said, “can help you to live this mission.”

Pope Francis canonizes 10 new saints of the Catholic Church
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, May 15, 2022 / 03:00 am

Pope Francis on Sunday recognized 10 new saints of the Catholic Church during a canonization Mass in St. Peter’s Square.

It was the Church’s first canonization since that of St. John Henry Newman and four others in October 2019.

Religious men and women, priests, and a lay man are among the 10 people who are recognized to be in heaven after living lives of exemplary holiness on earth.

“Holiness does not consist of a few heroic gestures, but of many small acts of daily love,” Pope Francis said during his homily on May 15, a sunny, warm day in Rome.

Pope Francis, who has been suffering from knee pain and has used a wheelchair to avoid walking in recent days, was able to stand for a short time and walk short distances during the Mass. He had assistance and walked visibly slower than in the recent past.

The Mass began with the rite of canonization, which included the reading of short biographies of each blessed, read by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

A litany of saints was sung before Pope Francis recited the formula of canonization.

Pope: ‘Dialogue especially with those who disagree with you’
16 May 2022, 12:18

Pope Francis receives in audience a group of members of the “Political Fraternity” of the Chemin Neuf Community and invites them to pursue their commitment to foster encounter and take action for the good of humanity.
By Linda Bordoni

The Chemin-Neuf Political Fraternity brings together young people aged 18 to 35, from different countries and political cultures, motivated by the same passion for the common good and the poor, and eager to act in politics according to the heart of God.

Addressing a group of its members in the Vatican on Monday, Pope Francis offered a reflection on the genuine meaning of politics for Christians.

“Politics is encounter, reflection, action.”

First and foremost, he said, politics is an art of encounter.

Noting that this encounter consists of being open to others and accepting their differences as part of a respectful dialogue, for Christians, he said: there is more.

The Gospel, the Pope explained, demands that we love our enemies and this means that we are “called to see political encounters as fraternal encounters, especially with people who disagree with us.”

It’s an attitude, he continued, that requires us to change the way we look at others, showing acceptance and respect.

“Without such a change of heart, politics often risks turning into a violent confrontation, where people try to impose their own ideas and pursue particular interests over the common good, contrary to the principle that “unity prevails over conflict” (cf. Evangelii Gaudium, 226-230).

Pope to universities: Rethink development models and inspire community service
16 May 2022, 15:01

Pope Francis meets with University Rectors from Italy’s Lazio region on Monday, inviting them to commit their institutions to rethinking economic, cultural and social models that put the human person back at the centre. He also encourages them to continue to welcome students and teachers who are victims of war and persecution.
By Vatican News staff reporter

In his address to University Rectors from Italy’s Lazio region, Pope Francis stressed the importance of these places of learning “in this particular historical moment,” saying they are entrusted “with a task of great responsibility.”

He told those gathered that the pandemic years, war in Europe, the global environmental issue, and the growth of inequalities, “challenge us in an unprecedented and accelerated way.”

“We have to tell ourselves the truth: we are in crisis,” said the Pope in off-the-cuff remarks.

But he added that being in a crisis can be a good thing because it “makes us grow.”

The danger, he pointed out, “is when the crisis turns into conflict: conflict is closed and destroys. But we must learn to live in crisis, as we do now, and to bring forward the young people who are [in]our universities, teaching them to live in crisis and to overcome crisis.”

Pope to Mission Societies: ‘Be faithful, bold and creative’
16 May 2022, 16:23

In a message to members of the Pontifical Mission Societies gathered in the French city of Lyon to celebrate the 200th anniversary of their foundation, Pope Francis points to the path traced by Pauline Jaricot for the continuation and fulfillment of their mission.
By Linda Bordoni

“In this special year you have gathered in Lyon, the city where the Pontifical Missionary Societies originated and where the beatification of Pauline Jaricot, will be celebrated,” writes Pope Francis in a message to members of the Pontifical Mission Societies who are marking a series of anniversaries including the 200 years from the foundation of their institution.

Pauline Jaricot was a French laywoman who felt the call to missionary life and founded the association of the “Propagation of the Faith” which was approved by Pope Pius VII in 1823.

In his message, the Pope highlights the fact that these anniversaries are part of the celebration for the 400th anniversary of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide, to which the Missionary Works are closely linked and with which they collaborate in supporting the Churches in the territories entrusted to the Dicastery.

Pope Francis addresses the 5th Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour taking place in South Africa and underlines that ensuring the present and future of children is ensuring the present and future of the entire human family.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

The 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour is taking place in Durban, South Africa from 15 – 20 May.

For the occasion, Pope Francis has sent a message extending his warm greetings and prayers to the participants in a letter addressed to Mr. Guy Rider, the Director-General of the International Labour Organization.

The six-day event aims to raise awareness about child labour and to accelerate efforts towards its elimination at a time when about 160 million children - almost one in ten worldwide - are being forced to work, according to the UN.

Parolin: ‘Praedicate evangelium’ realizes a chief goal of the pontificate
17 May 2022, 15:15

Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin says “Praedicate evangelium” represents the realization of one of the chief goals of Pope Francis’ pontificate: the reform of the Roman Curia.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

Structural changes, novelties dictated by present contingencies, processes already underway for years and finally completed: Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, went to the heart of Praedicate evangelium, the Apostolic Constitution reforming the Roman Curia, which was published on 19 March and which will take effect 5 June. With the Apostolic Constitution, Cardinal Parolin said, “one of the main objectives that the present pontificate had set for itself from the beginning has been realized.”

Study Day

The Cardinal opened a Study Day entitled, “Praedicate Evangelium: Structure, content and novelty,” which was organized by the Institutum Utriusque Iuris of the Pontifical Lateran University. The first major event since the publication of the Constitution, the study day is a significant moment of high-level discussion to understand the framework and criteria of the document with which Pope Francis has harmonized the changes to the Curia that have already been implemented and become operative during his pontificate. In addition to Cardinal Parolin, other speakers included Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, secretary of the Council of Cardinals for many years; the prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, Father Juan Antonio Guerrero Alves; the prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, Paolo Ruffini, and the Auditor General, Alessandro Cassinis Righini. Bishop Marco Mellino, secretary of the Council of Cardinals, who had been scheduled to speak, was absent for health reasons.

Pope: St. Charles de Foucauld shared essence and universality of faith
18 May 2022, 09:00

Pope Francis meets with men and women inspired by the charism of St. Charles de Foucauld, and praises the new Saint’s focus on the love of Christ for all people.
By Devin Watkins

Just three days after declaring Charles de Foucauld a Saint, Pope Francis met with a delegation of the many women and men inspired by the French missionary’s life and charism.

Speaking to the Association of the Spiritual Family of Charles de Foucauld on Wednesday, the Pope called him a “prophet for our times, who knew how to highlight the essence and universality of the faith.”

He said St. Charles de Foucauld boiled the meaning of faith down into two words: “Iesus – Caritas (“Jesus – Love”).

The Saint discovered that truth by returning to Jesus’ hidden life at Nazareth, after he lived in Jesus’ hometown for several years.

“I encourage you, like Brother Charles, to continue to envision Jesus walking in the midst of people, patiently carrying out a difficult job, and living day-to-day in a family and a city.”

Pope at Audience: The elderly teach us to persevere in faith
18 May 2022, 10:13

Continuing his catechesis on the elderly at the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis draws inspiration from the biblical figure of Job, who witnesses a God of tenderness behind His silence.
By Vatican News staff reporter

In his continuing catechesis on the meaning and value of old age in the light of God’s word, Pope Francis turned to the great biblical figure of Job.

Persevering in faith

He told the faithful gathered at Wednesday’s General Audience in St Peter’s Square that Job’s persevering faith amid profound suffering led him to understand that God, who often appears silent in the face of evil, is nonetheless mysteriously present with His redemptive mercy and love.

“We encounter him as a witness of a faith that does not accept a 'caricature' of God, but protests loudly in the face of evil until God responds and reveals His face,” said the Pope.

“He shows Job His glory without crushing him, or better still, with sovereign tenderness.”

In his affliction, said Pope Francis, Job rejects the simplistic explanations of evil offered by his friends and pours out all his violent pain and protest before God.

Pope authorizes non-clerics to be Major Superiors in certain cases
18 May 2022, 14:21

With a rescript promulgated on Wednesday, Pope Francis grants the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life faculties to allow non-clerics to serve as “major superiors” in religious communities.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis has authorised the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated and Societies of Apostolic Life to grant dispensations that would allow non-clerics to hold the office of Major Superior in some cases.

The Holy Father did so in a rescript promulgated on Wednesday, concerning the possibility of a dispensation from Canon 588 §2 of the Code of Canon Law (CIC), which stipulates that that clerical institutes be governed by clerics.

Major superiors, along with their vicars, are those who govern an entire or a part of a clerical institute, and are called to “devote themselves diligently to their office and together with the members entrusted to them are to strive to build a community of brothers or sisters in Christ,” according to the CIC.

Pope Francis dismisses prominent German ex-monk from clerical state
By CNA Staff
Munich, Germany, May 18, 2022 / 10:51 am

Pope Francis has dismissed a prominent German former monk from the clerical state in the wake of his continued celebration of weddings and baptisms after leaving the Catholic Church.

The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising on May 18 confirmed to CNA Deutsch, CNA’s German-language news partner, “that Anselm Bilgri has been dismissed from the clerical state by the Vatican.”

A diocesan spokesperson added that it was “normal procedure” for this to be communicated by the local archdiocese.

“This is also the route taken in less prominent cases,” the spokesperson said.

Bilgri is a well-known figure in the German-speaking Catholic world. He was ordained a priest by the future Benedict XVI in 1980. As a Benedictine monk and prior of the scenic monastery of Andechs, famous for its Bavarian brewery, Bilgri soon became known to a wider public.

WYD Lisbon 2023 announces 13 patron saints for young pilgrims
18 May 2022, 19:00

The press office of World Youth Day announces the 13 patron saints of WYD Lisbon to act as models for the young people who will gather in the capital of Portugal on 1-6 August 2023.
By Devin Watkins

As preparations continue for next year’s World Youth Day in Lisbon, thirteen holy men and women are being held up as examples of holiness for young people around the world.

Cardinal Manuel Clemente, the Patriarch of Lisbon, says these patrons “have shown that life in Christ fills and saves the youth of all times.”

In a press statement released on Tuesday, the Cardinal explores the contribution each holy person can make in the lives of young people.

“The patroness par excellence of the next World Youth Day is the Virgin Mary, the young woman who accepted to be the mother of the incarnate Son of God”

Inspiration for young, holy lives

Cardinal Clemente also pointed to Pope St. John Paul II, who brought the WYD events to life, “which have brought together and encouraged millions of young people from the five continents.”

Pope to ambassadors: Don’t lose hope for a world of fraternity
19 May 2022, 10:22

Pope Francis welcomes new non-resident Ambassadors to the Holy See from Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Burundi, and Qatar, and urges nations not to lose hope in a world filled with human fraternity and peace.
By Christopher Wells

Welcoming new non-resident ambassadors to the Holy See on Thursday, Pope Francis noted that they are beginning their missions “in a uniquely challenging moment” in history.

The new Ambassadors represent Burundi, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, and Qatar.

Although the world is beginning to return to normalcy in the wake of the pandemic, “the dark cloud of war [has] descended over Eastern Europe, subsequently enveloping the entire world in direct or indirect ways.”

Pope praises work of Santa Marta Group to combat human trafficking
19 May 2022, 11:54

Meeting participants of the Santa Marta Group Conference, Pope Francis thanks them for their ongoing commitment in the fight against the scourge of human trafficking.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis on Thursday met with participants in the Santa Marta Group Conference, as they concluded their three-day meeting on human trafficking at the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences in the Vatican's Casina Pio IV.

Founded in 2014

The group, led by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, was established in 2014 to pledge closer cooperation on anti-trafficking initiatives between the Catholic Church and law enforcement agencies worldwide, as this scourge continues to grow and greater numbers of vulnerable people are falling prey to criminal organizations.

It was named after the Papal residence where the participants from the Vatican Conference stayed in April 2014 and resulted in a signed ‘Declaration of Commitment’ by all the Chiefs of Police present to work together on the international stage to develop strategies in prevention, pastoral care and the re-integration.

Since that first event, police chiefs, civil society leaders, bishops, and religious sisters have met regularly to share experiences and good practices. They also seek to strengthen cooperation on the international, national and local so as to improve and better enforce existing legislations against human trafficking, which Pope Francis has described "a crime against humanity” and “a wound on the body of Christ”.

Pope: ‘Church must help heal human destructiveness’
19 May 2022, 12:57

Pope Francis praises the Pontifical Gregorian University’s Institute of Psychology for its 50 years of service, saying the Church must offer the world competent formators to respond to the destruction of war and conflict rooted in human nature.
By Devin Watkins

The Institute of Psychology at the Pontifical Gregorian University hosted a conference on Thursday to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Pope Francis sent his greetings to participants in a message reflecting on the Institute’s contribution to the Church over the past half century.

“Following the Ignatian principle of ‘cura personalis’, you have prepared specialists capable of integrating spirituality and psychology in apostolic and educational activities, in various geographical and cultural contexts of the Church.”
