Pope to Romanian College: Be true to your roots to bear fruit
19 May 2022, 13:43

Pope Francis receives in audience the Community of the Pontifical Romanian College “Pio Romeno” on the occasion of the eighty-fifth anniversary of its establishment by Pope Pius XI.
By Vatican News staff reporter

At the heart of the Pope’s address to the Pontifical Romanian College was the need to look to one's roots, whether it be religious or cultural traditions.

Nourishing roots

He told seminarians from Romania that training in Rome offered them the opportunity to rediscover their roots in a fulfilled way, through study and meditation.

It was also a precious opportunity to reflect on how roots were formed, he said

The Pope recalled the period during World War II, when the Romanian Greek Catholic Church no longer had any active Bishops, as they had been killed or imprisoned.

He observed that many priests during that time offered to God their sufferings and the testimony of their faith, even at the cost of their lives.

The Pope underlined that without nourishing roots “every religious tradition loses fruitfulness.”

Meeting with editors of 10 various Jesuit publications, Pope Francis spoke about the war in Ukraine, the life of the Church, and the synodal journey.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis met ten Jesuit magazine editors in the Vatican on Thursday morning.

These were the European cultural magazines of the Society of Jesus: Stimmen der Zeit (Germany), Choisir (Switzerland), Signum (Sweden), Razón y fe (Spain), Brotéria (Portugal), Deon (Poland), A Szív (Hungary) , Viera in život (Slovakia), Thinking Faith (UK) and La Civiltà Cattolica (Italy).

Three editors are lay people, including two women (for the Swiss and English magazines). The others are Jesuits. The Father General of the Society of Jesus, Father Arturo Sosa Abascal, S.J., also attended the audience.

Their conversation lasted over an hour long and was conducted in the "usual fraternal and direct style", wrote Father Antonio Spadaro, SJ, director of La Civiltà Cattolica, in a tweet.

Pope launches Scholas International with U2's Bono, says girls must be educated
19 May 2022, 18:54

Pope Francis takes part in the festive launch of the Scholas Occurrentes International Movement, along with U2 singer Bono Vox, and appeals for girls around the world to receive a good education.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis took the opportunity of a festive and musical atmosphere to launch the international Pontifical Foundation “Scholas Occurrentes” with strong appeals for educating girls and protecting the environment.

The event took place on Thursday evening at the Pontifical Urban University, known as the Urbaniana, which lies within walking distance of St. Peter's Square.

Since its inception, Scholas has become a worldwide network of schools that share assets, with common objectives and special attention to those most in need. Scholas Occurrentes’ roots are to be found in educational projects created for children in impoverished areas in the city of Buenos Aires, at the initiative of the then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis.

Update:  The Vatican finance trial

https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251287/cardinal-becciu-pope-francis-responsible-for-vatican-auditors-ousting
Cardinal Becciu: Pope Francis responsible for Vatican auditor's ousting
Vatican City, May 18, 2022 / 13:33 pm

Cardinal Angelo Becciu said Wednesday that he is blameless in the forced resignation of a Vatican auditor, because it came at Pope Francis’ request.

Becciu was said to be responsible for the sudden firing in 2017 of the Vatican’s first auditor general, Libero Milone, as well as the cancelation of an internal audit.

But during a May 18 hearing in the Vatican’s finance trial, Becciu denied this, stating that in June 2017, Pope Francis called him to a meeting in his Santa Marta residence, where he claimed that he longer had trust in Milone, and therefore wanted Becciu to call the auditor and tell him he must resign.

According to Becciu, the pope also expressed regret for entrusting the then-sostituto of the Secretariat of State with “these thankless tasks.”

At a May 5 hearing, the 73-year-old Becciu had declined to respond to a question from a prosecuting attorney about his involvement in Milone’s firing, claiming “for love of the Holy Father” he could not answer.

But during Wednesday’s interrogation, Becciu said he had since received Pope Francis’ permission to speak freely about the situation.

Archbishop Cordileone tells priests that Nancy Pelosi Communion denial is ‘pastoral, not political’
By Carl Bunderson
Denver Newsroom, May 20, 2022 / 13:04 pm

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone took extra pains Friday to explain to priests of the Archdiocese of San Francisco his decision barring House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from receiving Communion because of her advocacy of abortion.

In a May 20 letter addressed priests of the archdiocese, Cordileone explained that his instruction is nothing but the application of the Church’s teaching. The archbishop addressed a separate letter to the laity.

“There are those who speak of such actions as I am taking as ‘weaponizing’ the Eucharist.  However, this is simply application of Church teaching.  One would have to demonstrate that a person’s actions in following Church teaching is explicitly for a political purpose in order to justify the accusation of ‘weaponizing’ the Eucharist,” the archbishop wrote. “I have been very clear all along, in both my words and my actions, that my motive is pastoral, not political.”

He added “that one can also violate Church teaching and take Holy Communion for a political purpose as well, thus ‘weaponizing’ the Eucharist for one’s own ulterior motives.”

Pope Francis approves canonization of two Blesseds
21 May 2022, 13:14

In decrees approved on Saturday, Pope Francis approves the canonization of Blessed Giovanni Battista Scalabrini and Blessed Artemide Zatti; recognizes a miracle attributed to Spanish laywoman Maria de la Concepción Barrecheguren y García; and recognizes the heroic virtues of seven Servants of God.
By Vatican News staff reporters

Pope Francis will convene a consistory to canonize Bishop Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, raising to the altars a bishop already recognized throughout the world as a patron of migrants. Scalabrini, who served as Bishop of Piacenza, Italy, in the 19th century, is the founder of the Congregations of the Missionaries of St Charles, which have as a special charism the mission of serving migrants.

Scalabrini’s canonization was announced on Saturday at an audience granted to Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Pope Francis also approved the canonization Artemide Zatti, an Italian layman who emigrated with his family to Argentina in the late 1800s, and who became a Salesian co-worker and missionary in Patagonia.

The decree on causes for canonization signed by the Pope at the audience also recognized a miracle attributed to the intercession of a Spanish laywoman, Maria de la Concepción Barrecheguren y García, and of the heroic virtues of seven servants of God, who thus became Venerable.

In wake of Pelosi communion ban, pope backs pro-life demonstration in Italy
By Inés San Martín
May 22, 2022

ROME – Two days after Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone announced that U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was barred from receiving communion in San Francisco over her support for abortion rights, Pope Francis offered support to a pro-life demonstration, saying that life is a gift from God.

On Sunday, Francis thanked those who took part in Scegliamo la Vita (Let’s Choose Life), Saturday’s march and pro-life demonstration in Rome, applauding participants for “your commitment in favor of life and in defense of conscientious objection, the exercise of which is often attempted to be restricted.”

The pope said that “unfortunately,” in recent years “there has been a shift in the common mentality, and today we are increasingly inclined to think that life is an asset at our total disposal, which we can choose to manipulate, give birth to or let die as we please, as the exclusive outcome of an individual choice.”

“Let us remember that life is a gift from God,” he said. “It is always sacred and inviolable, and we cannot silence the voice of conscience.”

Francis’s remarks came at the end of his weekly Regina Caeli prayer

Pope to Italian Civil Protection: ‘Every war goes against principles of the UN'
23 May 2022, 13:47

Pope Francis meets with volunteers of the Italian Civil Protection Department, and laments the destruction of war as a betrayal of the principles of the United Nations to protect humanity.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis on Monday thanked volunteers of the Italian Civil Protection Service, the national emergency management agency, for their “silent service” during the Covid-19 crisis and, more recently, for refugees from war-torn Ukraine, remarking that “good makes no noise, but builds the world.”

The Italian Civil Protection Service (Protezione Civile) was officially established in 1992 to ensure the presence of human resources and means in every area of the country, as well as operational, organizational and decision-making capacities, so as to be able to intervene in a timely and effective manner in case of natural and humanitarian disasters, but also to prevent and foresee  them. Its origins go back to the mid-seventies, following the devastating earth-quake in Northern Italy’s region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis said he is saddened to learn of the tragic loss of life and destruction caused by the tornado which struck the Gaylord community in recent days.

In a telegram addressed to Bishop Jeffrey J. Walsh of Gaylord, a city of about 4,200 people west of Detroit in the US State of Michigan, the Pope expressed heartfelt solidarity with all affected by this natural disaster.

In the message signed on his behalf by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, the Pope said he “also offers the assurance of prayers for the dead, the injured and displaced and those engaged in relief efforts," and he invoked God’s blessings of strength and peace on all those affected.

Friday's tornado killed two people, injured more than 40 others, knocked out electricity, and flattened parts of the northern Michigan community where such extreme weather conditions are rare.

Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi has been elected new president of the Italian Bishops' Conference (CEI).

Pope Francis named the 66-year-old Archbishop of Bologna, who has been long affiliated with the Community of Sant'Egidio, as the new leader of the CEI on Tuesday.

The nomination came shortly after the end of the second session of the 76th General Assembly of the CEI at the Hilton Rome Airport in Fiumicino.

Their meeting takes place on 23-27 May, and is focused on the theme: “Listening to the Narratives of the People of God: The first discernment: What priorities are emerging along the Synodal Journey?”

Cardinal Zuppi succeeds outgoing CEI president, Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, 80, Archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve, who read the announcement.

Welcoming his nomination, Cardinal Zuppi thanked the Pope and the bishops.

Archbishop Cordileone responds to criticism that he's 'politicizing the Eucharist'

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone on Monday responded to criticism that he is “politicizing” the Eucharist by denying Nancy Pelosi Holy Communion, saying he would prefer the Democratic House Speaker remain in office “and become an advocate for life in the womb."

"What does it mean to politicize the Holy Eucharist if one is following Church teaching and applying Church teaching?” Cordileone said in an interview with EWTN News’ Erik Rosales that aired May 23 on “EWTN News Nightly.”

“One would have to demonstrate that one is doing that for a political purpose,” the archbishop said.

“I've been very clear all along, my purpose is pastoral, not political,” he added. “I am not campaigning for anyone for office. As a matter of fact, my preference would be for Speaker Pelosi to remain in office and become an advocate for life in the womb."
