Pope: World needs a new Christian model of economy
25 May 2022, 13:47

Before the Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis meets 20 members of the Global Solidarity Fund (GSF) and encourages them to continue their commitment for a more inclusive economy in line with the Catholic Social teaching and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis on Wednesday reiterated his call for the Church to reach out to the physical, but also the spiritual "peripheries" of the world, recalling that this is exactly what Jesus did in his time.

He made the call during an audience with a delegation of the Global Solidarity Fund (GSF), an alliance that promotes partnerships for the most vulnerable across the private sector, the development sector, and Catholic communities, inspired by his vision and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to build a better world, based on solidarity, charity, and equality.

Pope at Audience: Elderly must resist temptation to knowledge without action
25 May 2022, 09:23

At the Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis continues his catechesis on old age, and urges the elderly to hold on to their passion for justice while resisting the temptation to accumulate knowledge without turning it into action.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis reflected on the Old Testament Book of Qoheleth, or Ecclesiastes, at the weekly General Audience, noting how its refrain “everything is vanity” represents a particular temptation in our own day and age.

He said the wise man Qoheleth bounced back and forth from sense and meaninglessness in his quest for knowledge of life, saying he teetered on non-sense when leaning toward knowledge detached from “passion for justice.”

Qoheleth, added the Pope, concluded his book with an indication of how to get out of the trap: “Fear God, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.”

26 May 2022, 10:37

Pope Francis, in connection with international shrines worldwide, will lead a Rosary for peace from the Basilica of St. Mary Major on 31 May for those suffering the ongoing war in Ukraine and other wars around the world.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis will lead a Rosary for peace as a sign of hope for those suffering from the ongoing war in Ukraine and wars around the world.

The news was announced on Ascension Thursday in a statement from the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization.

“At the conclusion of the Marian month, Pope Francis wishes to offer a sign of hope to the world, suffering from the conflict in Ukraine and deeply wounded by the violence of the many wars still active.”

On Tuesday, 31 May, at 6pm, the Pope will pray the Rosary before the statue of Mary Regina Pacis in Rome's Marian Basilica.

"All the faithful in every part of the world are invited to support Pope Francis in his prayer to the Queen of Peace," the statement encouraged.

Pope: Synodality should lead us to live communion more intensely
26 May 2022, 16:00

In a videomessage for the Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, Pope Francis reflects on the meaning of synodality and communion, insisting both are necessary as the Church embarks on the synodal journey.
By Christopher Wells

Synodality has been taking root in the Church in Latin America for some time, embracing “a correct interpretation” of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council that implies “learning anew how to walk together” in the face of epochal changes in society.

At the same time, Pope Francis told the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, “we have to be aware of our limitation in order to be able to mature and bear evangelical fruit” on this synodal path.

The Pope was speaking on the theme of “Synodality and Communion,” in a video message to the Plenary Assembly of the Commission.

Despite Limited Mobility, Pope Francis Has Ambitious Summer Travel Plans

The Holy Father has scheduled strenuous, long-distance trips to Africa and Canada.
Edward Pentin  May 26, 2022

VATICAN CITY — Despite persistent health concerns, Pope Francis appears on course to face two strenuous, long-haul apostolic journeys in July — first to Africa with visits to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, and then a multi-stop tour of Canada.

Health Questions

All three of these apostolic journeys are extensive, raising questions over whether the 85-year-old Pontiff, who is currently confined to a wheelchair due to what Vatican sources say is a “fractured knee,” will be in a fit enough state to take them. The Pope’s health has been in question since last July when he underwent a major operation to remove a large part of his colon. For a number of years, he has also suffered from sciatica.

“What’s really directing this [visit] is the Pope’s limited ability to get around,” Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton told reporters May 13. “So the Vatican is very clear: When he comes to a country, he can’t get around by helicopter, he can’t be in a car any more than an hour, he cannot be in a different place every night.”

Sources familiar with the situation told the Register last week that Francis will have to have surgery on his knee soon, as doctors say pain medication or “infiltrations,” a therapy that offers pain relief, will not be effective in the long run. But, sources say, Francis’ doctor is on standby, awaiting the Pope’s personal decision to undergo the surgery.

Vatican correspondent Franca Giansoldati, writing in Il Messaggero May 24, wrote that Francis is reluctant to undergo surgery, telling Italian bishops this week that the last time he went under the knife to resolve his colon problem last year, he had difficulties following the general anesthesia.

Pope to Mongolian Buddhists: Humanity must renounce all forms of violence
28 May 2022, 10:37

Pope Francis greets a Buddhist delegation from Mongolia visiting the Vatican, and calls for interreligious dialogue to help humanity embrace nonviolence in every aspect of life.
By Devin Watkins

As the Holy See and Mongolia mark the 30th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations, a delegation of Buddhist leaders from the East Asian nation met with Pope Francis on Saturday.

The group was accompanied by Bishop Giorgio Marengo, the Apostolic Prefect of Ulaanbaatar.

Pope Francis offered the delegation a “warm and respectful welcome”, and praised their desire to build a peaceful society through mutual understanding with the Catholic Church.

“Peace is the ardent yearning of humanity today. Consequently, there is an urgent need, through dialogue at all levels, to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence. This dialogue must invite all people to reject violence in every form, including violence done to the environment.”

At the same time, the Pope lamented that some people still seek to employ religion to justify violence and hatred.

Pope: Study of history can offer valuable way to foster peace
28 May 2022, 13:49

Meeting with Members of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences, Pope Francis expresses his hope that historians will give courageous initiative to researching and dialoguing on the concrete history of peoples and States.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis met on Saturday morning with Members of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences gathered in Rome for their Plenary Session. Pope Pius XII established the Committee in 1954 with the purpose of promoting the study of history, especially regarding the Church, as a service to the Pope, the Holy See and the local churches. Members hail from 14 countries and three continents, expressing a multicultural, international and multidisciplinary dynamic.

In his meeting with them, the Pope paid tribute to the valuable contribution they provide, especially through dialoguing and collaborating with historians and academic institutions studying the history of the Church, and how Christianity and world history are intertwined.

Pope encourages Cursillos to 'go beyond' for mission and unity
28 May 2022, 17:41

Pope Francis meets members of 'Cursillos of Christianity' in Italy, and encourages them to promote communion in the Church and to continue their mission of evangelizing society.
By Lisa Zengarini

Moving towards communion, and mission: Pope Francis indicated these two “directions” to the Cursillos de Cristianidad of Italy, as he addressed some 2,400 members in the Paul VI Audience on Saturday on the occasion of their 7th national gathering, called ‘Ultreya’.

The Cursillos de Cristianidad is an international lay movement founded in 1944 in Spain, by a group of laymen, aimed at teaching men and women how to become effective Christian leaders in their neighbourhoods, parishes, work situations, and other places where people live. The group forms Christians through spiritual formation courses (cursillos), in which they are invited to build a closer relationship with Christ and to a deeper experience of Christian community. It was officially recognized by Pope St. Paul VI, who designated the Cursillos as a renewal movement of the Church. The movement is now present in many countries across the world, including the United States.

The Vatican releases the official programme of Pope Francis' 37th Apostolic Journey abroad, which takes him to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan from 2 to 7 July.

Two nations, three cities, eight discourses, three homilies, and meetings with civil and ecclesial authorities, young people, displaced persons, and victims of violence.

An intense programme with few moments of rest awaits the Pope as he travels, from 2 to 7 July, to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, where - fulfilling a wish expressed years ago – is due to undertake an "Ecumenical Pilgrimage of Peace", together with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Iain Greenshields.

Pope at Regina Coeli: True love never stifles but leaves us free to love
29 May 2022, 12:08

Pope Francis prays the Regina Coeli with pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square on the feast of the Ascension, and reflects on the liberating love of Jesus who never leaves us as He ascends to the Father.
By Devin Watkins

Though traditionally celebrated on Thursday, many nations mark the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ on the Sunday before Pentecost, including in Italy.

On Ascension Sunday, Pope Francis prayed the Eastertide Marian prayer of the Regina Coeli, and reflected on the day’s Gospel (Lk 24:46-53).

He noted that Jesus, in His final apparition to the disciples, did two things before ascending to God the Father: “He announces the gift of the Spirit, and then He blesses the disciples.”

What message is Pope Francis sending with his choice of new cardinals?
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Vatican City, May 30, 2022 / 05:15 am

The consistory for the creation of cardinals on Aug. 27 is a ceremony that seems to mark the end of a pontificate — though that end might be long in coming.

After praying the Regina Coeli on Sunday, Pope Francis announced the creation of 16 new cardinals eligible to vote in a future conclave and five over the age of 80.

He also summoned all cardinals to take part in another consistory, on Aug. 29-30, to discuss the new Vatican constitution Praedicate evangelium. Such a broad discussion among cardinals hasn’t taken place for seven years.

The 85-year-old pope chose to convene the consistory in August, a non-traditional date. The last such event took place on Aug. 24, 1807, when Pius VII named Francesco Guidobono Cavalchini as a cardinal in pectore. The move was only made public in 1818.

By announcing the gathering to discuss the new Vatican constitution, the pope effectively froze the ongoing debate until the end of August. For three months, discussion of curial reform and the Church’s broader trajectory will be effectively contained, giving Pope Francis a freer hand to make changes, including new curial appointments, and present them as a fait accompli by the time of his meeting with the world’s cardinals

“The promotion and deepening of Jewish-Christian dialogue has been something close to my heart since I was a young boy,” Pope Francis said on Monday morning, “because at school I had Jewish classmates; it is a dialogue made up of encounter and concrete gestures of fraternity.”

The Pope addressed his remarks to a delegation from B’nai B’rith International, a Jewish service organization committed to advocating for Jews around the world and promoting human rights

Pope: 'Counter a culture of indifference with one of providence'
30 May 2022, 12:53

Pope Francis tells the female and male members of the Order of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence that the geographical and existential peripheries to which the Lord sends then are the field in which to announce God’s providential love through mercy.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis on Monday said the Church today needs religious communities who are open to the world and unafraid of going forth into the geographical and existential peripheries responding to the needs of the poor and the discarded in society.

Addressing members of the Poor Servants and Poor Sisters Servants of Divine Providence upon the conclusion of their General Chapters, the Pope noted that they continue to be guided by the legacy of their founder, St. Giovanni Calabria and his prophecy of communion.

“It seems to me that you wanted to put it into practice in the setting of these days,” he said noting that “communion is born and nourished first of all in our relationship with God the Trinity,” then “manifested concretely in fraternity.”

By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis on Monday sent a message to members of the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) on the occasion of their Plenary Council which began the same day.

The Holy Father seized the opportunity to emphasize some points to guide their discernment, as they meet to carry out three important tasks: choosing the Commission’s new governing committee, approving the new statutes, and determining its operational guidelines for the coming years.

Vatican grants indulgences for Day for Grandparents and Elderly
30 May 2022, 12:17

The Holy See announced on Monday a series of indulgences that can be obtained by those taking part on the second World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.
By Christopher Wells

In a decree published on Monday, the Apostolic Penitentiary – the Vatican tribunal responsible for issues relating to mercy and the forgiveness of sins in the Church – announced several grants of indulgences for those taking part in the second World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, which this year falls on Sunday 24 July.

A plenary indulgence, which may also be obtained in suffrage for the souls in Purgatory, is granted:

 - to grandparents, the elderly, and the faithful who, motivated by a true spirit of penance and charity, will participate on July 24th in the solemn celebration that Pope Francis will preside over in the Vatican, or in the various functions that take place throughout the world;

 - to the faithful who, on the same day, devote adequate time to visit, in person or virtually through the media, their disabled brothers and sisters in need or in difficulty (such as the sick, the abandoned, or the disabled

 - to the sick elderly and to all those who, unable to leave their homes for a serious reason, will unite spiritually with the sacred services of the World Day, offering to the Merciful God their prayers, the pains and sufferings of their lives, especially while the words of the Supreme Pontiff and the various celebrations are broadcast through the media

The grants of indulgence, “from the heavenly treasures of the Church,” are made under the usual conditions of sacramental Confession, Eucharistic confession, and prayers for the intentions of the Pope.
