Pope Francis and Christians across the world join in praying the Rosary for peace at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, in Rome.
By Linda Bordoni

Pope Francis on Tuesday invoked the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, to grant humanity the gift of peace.

Speaking on Sunday, the Pope invited the faithful across the globe to join him in praying the Rosary on the last day of the Marian month of May, as wars continue to afflict humanity with death, suffering and destruction.

The prayer vigil, which took place in the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major, included the participation of people affected or displaced by war, of migrants and refugees.

Pope at Audience: The elderly can inspire a more just and humane society
01 June 2022, 09:45

Continuing his catechesis on the meaning and value of old age, Pope Francis says the elderly can offer us a much-needed example of perseverance in prayer and hope-filled surrender to the Lord.
By Thaddeus Jones

Citing the heartfelt prayer found in Psalm 71, “You, O Lord, are my hope; my trust, O Lord, from my youth,” Pope Francis in his weekly catechesis noted how the Psalmist senses the growing frailty and vulnerability that come with age, and implores God's continued protection and care.

Pope Francis: Crisis an opportunity for evangelisation
01 June 2022, 11:26

Pope Francis meets with participants in the International Conference on the Global Education Pact, a project he launched in 2019, and tells them the crisis we are experiencing can become a propitious moment for re-evangelisation.
By Vatican News staff reporter

In an address to participants in an International Conference on the Global Compact on Education, Pope Francis spoke about how a crisis can become a stimulus to set people out on new paths.

The example of Aeneas

“An eloquent example of how to confront a crisis,” he said, was how the mythological figure Aeneas saves his father and son from the flames of his burning city. “Aeneas saves himself, but not by himself. He brings with him his father, who represents his past, and his son, who represents the future.”

This image, noted the Pope, “can serve to illustrate the mission of educators, who are called to preserve the past and to guide the steps of the young towards the future. It can also help us to reflect on some fundamental principles of the Global Compact on Education.”

Pope Francis names Cardinal Cupich a member of Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship
By CNA Staff
Vatican City, Jun 1, 2022 / 05:25 am

Pope Francis on Wednesday named Cardinal Blase Cupich as a member of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

The archbishop of Chicago’s appointment was announced by the Holy See press office on June 1.

In 2021, Cupich welcomed the publication of the motu proprio Traditionis custodes, restricting celebrations of the Traditional Latin Mass.

Other churchmen named as members of the congregation include the Irish-American Cardinal Kevin Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, the Family, and Life, and the Bronx-born Archbishop Augustine Di Noia, adjunct secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Di Noia also welcomed the publication of Traditionis custodes, saying in a 2021 interview with the Catholic News Service that “the TLM (Traditional Latin Mass) movement has hijacked the initiatives of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI to its own ends.”

Other members of the Congregation include Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Burmese Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Yangon, and Bishop Hugh Gilbert of Aberdeen, president of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland.

Members of Vatican congregations normally have five-year terms.

Pope Francis sends a telegramme expressing his prayers and good wishes for Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee.

This Thursday marks the start of a weekend of celebrations across the United Kingdom on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne.

Marking this milestone, Pope Francis has sent a telegramme to the Queen offering his prayers and good wishes.

In it, he says: “On this joyful occasion of your Majesty’s birthday, and as you celebrate this Platinum Jubilee year, I send cordial greetings and good wishes, together with the renewed assurance of my prayers that Almighty God will bestow upon you, the members of the Royal Family and all the people of the nation blessings of unity, prosperity and peace.”

In a previously-unpublished message sent to Queen Elizabeth on 29 March, the Pope said he joins with those expressing appreciation for her persevering and steadfast service to the good of the nation, “the advancement of its people, and the preservation of its illustrious spiritual, cultural and political heritage.”

Pope’s June prayer intention: ‘For families’
02 June 2022, 16:00

Pope Francis releases his prayer intention for June 2022, and urges Catholics to pray for all families during the month in which Rome hosts the 10th World Meeting of Families.
By Devin Watkins

“There is no such thing as a perfect family. There are always ‘buts.’’

Pope Francis made that affirmation in The Pope Video released on Thursday to promote his prayer intention for June.

Yet, he added, “that doesn’t matter. We shouldn’t be afraid of mistakes; we have to learn from them so we can move forward.”

Pope at Audience: Christian community must visit elderly, help them to serve
15 June 2022, 09:17

Continuing his catechesis on the value of old age at the General Audience, Pope Francis invites the elderly to overcome the temptation to stand aside, because the Lord never discards them, but rather restores their strength to serve.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

During the Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis continues his catechesis series on the elderly, reflecting on the account of the healing of Simon’s mother-in-law in the Gospel of Mark

“We do not know if it was a mild illness, but in old age, even a simple fever can be dangerous,” the Pope said, adding “when you are old, you no longer command your body. One must learn to choose what to do and what not to do.”

He noted that in old age, the vigor of the body fails and abandons us even though our heart does not stop yearning and we must then learn “to purify desire: to have patience, to choose what to ask of the body, or of life.”

Pope: ‘Church must walk closely with couples toward marriage’
15 June 2022, 12:01

Pope Francis pens the preface for guidelines to create “Catechumenal Itineraries for Married Life”, and urges the Church to help better prepare future spouses for marriage so as to avoid the suffering caused by broken families.
By Devin Watkins

The Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life on Wednesday released new pastoral guidelines for local Churches, which lay out a path toward the creation of “Catechumenal Itineraries for Married Life”.

Pope Francis wrote the preface for the Document, saying it represents a “fruit” of the Amoris Laetitia Family Year marking his Apostolic Exhortation on the family.

“The Church, in every age, is called to proclaim anew the beauty and abundance of grace contained in the Sacrament of Marriage and the family life which flows from it, especially to young people.”

New public associations of faithful require Vatican approval
15 June 2022, 17:02

Diocesan bishops must receive written authorization from the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life before erecting a public association of the faithful that is expected to become a religious institute.
Vatican News

Before erecting, by decree,  “a public association faithful with a view to becoming an institute of consecrated life or a society of apostolic life of diocesan right,” the diocesan bishop must obtain a “written license” from the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

This was decreed by Pope Francis in a Rescript on Wednesday about public associations of the faithful “in itinere”, following an audience, granted on 7 February to Cardinal João Braz de Aviz and to Archbishop José Rodríguez Carballo, respectively Prefect and Secretary of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

The Rescript, which comes into effect today, 15 June, with its publication in L'Osservatore Romano, is part of the synodality process promoted by Pope Francis, intending to develop closer collaboration between the offices of the Holy See and diocesan bishops engaging them in "mutual listening."

An interview with Pope Francis...

Pope: ‘War cannot be reduced to distinction between good guys and bad guys’
14 June 2022, 10:25

Pope Francis grants an interview to the Jesuit review ‘La Civiltà Cattolica’, and shares his thoughts on the war in Ukraine, Germany's synodal path, and signs of fresh life in the Church.
By Vatican News

We publish here an ample excerpt of Pope Francis’ conversation with La Civiltà Cattolica, which was released on Tuesday.

Q: The Society [of Jesus] is present in Ukraine, part of my [i.e. the Polish] Province. We are living a war of aggression. We write about it in our magazines. What is your advice for reporting on the situation we are experiencing? How can we contribute to a peaceful future?

To answer this question, we have to get away from the common mindset of "Little Red Riding Hood": Little Red Riding Hood was good and the wolf was the bad guy. Here there are no metaphysical good guys and bad guys, in the abstract. Something global is emerging, with elements that are closely intertwined with each other. A couple of months before the war started, I met with a head of state—a wise man, who speaks very little: very wise indeed. After we discussed the things he wanted to talk about, he told me that he was very concerned about the way NATO was acting. I asked him why, and he said, "They are barking at the gates of Russia. And they don't understand that the Russians are imperial and they will not allow any foreign power to approach them." He concluded, "The situation could lead to war." This was his opinion. On 24 February, the war began. That head of state was able to read the signs of what was happening.

Pope to make brief visit to Italian city of L'Aquila in August
04 June 2022, 12:08

Pope Francis will make a pastoral visit to L'Aquila on 28 August for the annual 'Celebration of Forgiveness', held in the city in the central Italian region of Abruzzo which was devastated by a massive earthquake in 2009.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis will make a pastoral visit to L'Aquila, the capital city of the Italian region of Abruzzo, on 28 August.

The Holy See Press Office announced the news on Saturday.

Each 28-29 August in L'Aquila, Catholics renew the solemn rite of Forgiveness (“Perdonanza”), the perpetual plenary indulgence that Pope Celestine V granted to the faithful.

The Pope's visit will fall the day after the Pope's consistory for the creation of 21 new Cardinals in the Vatican, and during the 27-29 August encounter the Holy Father requested for the world's Cardinals to gather in the Vatican together to reflect on the recently-published Apostolic Constitution Praedicate Evangelium on reforming the Roman Curia.

Pope to Sicilian priests: ‘Embrace bitterness with tenderness'
09 June 2022, 13:12

Pope Francis meets with the Bishops and priests of the Italian island of Sicily, and urges them to draw near and show tenderness to the many Sicilians who taste bitterness and disappointment due to a lack of employment opportunities.
By Devin Watkins

The Bishops and priests of Sicily met with Pope Francis on Thursday in the Vatican, who encouraged them in their mission to lift up their compatriots.

The Pope noted that the Italian island has historically acted as a waypoint for the movement of peoples, who sometimes came as conquerors and at other times as migrants.

Each wave of people has left their mark on the local culture.

“This is not to say that it is a happy island, because the condition of insularity profoundly affects Sicilian society, bringing to the fore the contradictions we carry within ourselves. In Sicily we witness attitudes and actions marked by great virtues as well as cruel brutality.”

The Pope lamented that many children avoid schooling and turn to a life of crime as a result of high youth unemployment rates, which hover near 50 percent.

“The current situation in Sicily has been in decline for years,” he said. “One sign is the depopulation of the island, due to low birthrates and mass emigration of young people” who leave to find work elsewhere.

Pope at Angelus: Holy Trinity revolutionizes our way of life
12 June 2022, 12:06

In his Angelus address on the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, Pope Francis recalls that the Trinity is not a "theological exercise," but "a revolution in our way of life."
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

The Holy Trinity, Pope Francis says, "is not so much a theological exercise," but "a revolution in our way of life."

The Pope stressed this during his Sunday Angelus address in St. Peter's Square, on the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.

The Holy Father began by reflecting on today's Solemnity, recalling today's Gospel passage in which Jesus presents the Father and the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit, Jesus explains, "will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears, He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.”

The Pope pointed out that the Holy Spirit speaks, but not of Himself, rather He announces and speaks about Jesus and reveals the Father. Likewise, the Father, "who possesses everything, because He is the origin of all things," gives to the Son everything He possesses and keeps nothing for Himself.

Cardinal Gambetti on Corpus Christi: “Give of yourselves like Jesus did"
16 June 2022, 12:37

Celebrating the Solemnity of Corpus Christi in the Vatican, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti recalls that faith and a change of attitude are necessary in order to accomplish what Jesus asks of us.
By Linda Bordoni

Presiding at Holy Mass on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi in St. Peter’s Basilica, the Archpriest of the Basilica, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, reflected on the day's Gospel reading in which Jesus told the crowd “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world” (Jn 6:55).

The solemnity of Corpus Christi celebrates the presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, and it is marked on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. The Mass, which was not presided over by Pope Francis as he follows doctors’ advice to rest his knee, concluded with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament and was followed by the Benediction. Cardinal Gambetti explained that the fact that Jesus came down from heaven shows how the Father’s love for humanity was manifested in “lowering” His Son who descended from heaven and died on the cross for our salvation.

Pope Francis: Church must communicate faith with 'theology that is alive'
17 June 2022, 11:33

Pope Francis receives formators from the Archdiocesan Seminary of Milan at the Vatican on Friday, and highlights three aspects of theology that are important for the Church today.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis reflected on the mission of schools of theology and the role of theological journals on Friday, in a printed address handed out to members of the editorial board of La Scuola Cattolica during an audience on the occasion of the theological journal's 150th anniversary.

In his written remarks, Holy Father described the publication, which is associated with the Archdiocesan Seminary of Milan, as “a bit like a shop window, where an artisan displays his work and one can admire his creativity.”

Seen in this light, Pope Francis highlighted three aspects of theology that are especially important in today’s world.

Pope to Buddhists: Let’s work together to cultivate compassion and hospitality
17 June 2022, 12:18

Pope Francis receives a delegation of Buddhists from Thailand and reiterates Pope St. Paul VI’s feelings of profound regard for the spiritual, moral and socio-cultural treasures of the Buddhist tradition.
By Linda Bordoni

“At a time in which our human family and planet are facing manifold threats,” the need for interreligious dialogue and collaboration are increasingly necessary, said Pope Francis, inviting Buddhists to continue to work together with the Catholic Church “to cultivate compassion and hospitality for all human beings, especially the poor and marginalized.”

The Pope was addressing a delegation from Thailand composed of thirty-three prominent Buddhist monks of both the Theravada and Mahayana schools, together with 60 lay Buddhists and several representatives of the Thai Catholic Church. They are in Rome to participate in a conference entitled Friendship between Buddhists and Christians for a Culture of Encounter, at the Pontifical Urban University.
