Pope at Angelus: Respond to opposition with firm decision to do good
26 June 2022, 12:02

At the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis calls the faithful to follow Jesus, who did not respond to opposition with anger and bitterness, but instead made a “resolute decision” to continue on to Jerusalem, knowing that rejection and death awaited Him there.
By Christopher Wells

Jesus’s decision to go to Jerusalem was a turning point, Pope Francis said at the Angelus on Sunday, because He knew it meant facing rejection, suffering, and death.

The Pope pointed out that we, too, are called to make a firm decision for our lives “if we want to be disciples of Jesus.” Sunday’s Gospel passage, he said, can help us see what this decision involves; because “we must be disciples of Jesus in earnest, with real determination, and not—as an elderly lady I knew used to say—'rosewater Christians.’ No, no, no! [We must be] serious Christians!”

Pope to Neocatechumenals: Be docile to the Spirit and obedient to Jesus
27 June 2022, 13:46

Pope Francis meets 5,500 members of the Neocatechumenal Way, a Catholic lay association founded in Spain in 1964 dedicated to post- and pre-baptismal formation of Christians, and urges them to remain docile to the Holy Spirit.
By Lisa Zengarini

Following the closing of the five-day 10th World Meeting of Families in Rome, Pope Francis on Monday granted a special audience to members of the Neocatechumenal Way, during which he sent 430 new Neochatechumenal families on mission.

Attending the festive event in the Paul VI Audience Hall in the Vatican were 5,500 members of the association from the five continents, including families from war-torn Ukraine, accompanied by their bishop, as well as Neocatechumenal families from the Diocese of Rome.

Pope to send Cardinal Secretary of State to South Sudan & DRC
27 June 2022, 20:02

Pope Francis is set to send Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin to Kinshasa and Juba, after having to postpone his Apostolic Journey to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan due to knee pain.
By Vatican News staff reporter

The Holy See Press Office announced on Monday evening that Pope Francis "has decided to send the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to Kinshasa and Juba in order to show his closeness to the beloved peoples of the Congo and South Sudan."

The move comes after the Pope had to postpone his Apostolic Journey to those African nations due to intense knee pain and at the insistence of his doctors. The Vatican Secretary of State will carry out the visit in the Pope's stead from 1 to 8 July.

Cardinal Parolin's visit will take place during the period when Pope Francis' 37th Apostolic Journey abroad was originally scheduled.

On 3 July, the Pope will however celebrate Mass with the Congolese community in Rome, on the same day in which he would have presided over Mass in Kinshasa.

Vatican publishes updated guidelines for cases of clerical sexual abuse of minors
27 June 2022, 11:09

Two years after the first edition, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith publishes a second version of the "Vademecum on Certain Points of Procedure in Treating Cases of Sexual Abuse of Minors Committed by Clerics".
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

The Vatican has published its second, updated version of the "Vademecum on Certain Points of Procedure in Treating Cases of Sexual Abuse of Minors Committed by Clerics."

The Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith announced in a statement on Monday that the new version will build upon the 2020 Vademecum developed by the Dicastery to assist bishops, or any person in authority, with guidelines explaining what they need to know and what they need to do in various situations in which a cleric is accused of sexual crimes against minors.

According to the Dicastery, “the text, which does not have the force of law, is intended to respond to a growing need for knowledge of the praxis in treating the situations described above by those who are called to take part in various procedural roles.”

27 June 2022, 12:00

Following a long-standing tradition, a delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople is in Rome this week to help build unity between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.
By Vatican News staff reporter

The Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity released a statement on Monday to announce the visit of an official delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople to Rome on 28-30 June.

The visit comes as part of the “traditional exchange of delegations for the respective feasts of the Patron Saints: 29 June in Rome for the celebration of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and 30 November in Istanbul for the celebration of St. Andrew the Apostle”.

The Orthodox delegation is led by Archbishop Job of Telmissos, who is accompanied by Bishop Adrianos of Halicarnassus and Patriarchal Deacon Barnabas Grigoriadis.

Archbishop Job is the co-chair of the International Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.

The delegation will attend the Mass presided over by Pope Francis on Wednesday, 29 June, to mark the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, and will meet with the Pope on Thursday, 30 June.

Pope tells young people to be messengers of hope
28 June 2022, 12:02

Pope Francis encourages young people participating in first Global Youth Tourism Meeting - underway this week in the town of Sorrento on Italy's Amalfi Coast - "to be messengers of hope and rebirth for the future."
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis is encouraging young people to be messengers of hope and rebirth for the future, in a video message to those participating in the Global Youth Tourism Summit taking place in Sorrento, Italy, from 27 June to 3 July 2022.

The Global Youth Tourism Summit is a new platform, developed by the UN World Tourism Organization, “to enhance youth empowerment and engagement in the tourism sector.”

The Summit consists of a series of international events, workshops, and education initiatives that, according to the website, "will give children and youth a unique platform to share and discuss innovative ideas, visions and their proposals for the future of sustainable tourism within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development."

Pope Francis: ‘I have been able to walk for three days’
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Jun 28, 2022 / 07:30 am

The Vatican has released a video of Pope Francis telling a group of bishops from Brazil this week that his mobility has improved.

“I have been able to walk for three days,” the pope said with a wave on June 27 as he walked with the help of a cane across the library of the Apostolic Palace.

Pope Francis’ wheelchair could be seen in the back of the room as he greeted the Brazilian bishops. The pope has used a wheelchair for many of his public audiences for nearly two months.

Official Logo of Jubilee unveiled
28 June 2022, 18:03

The Vatican reveals the official Logo of the upcoming Jubilee Year due to be held in 2025 on the theme 'Pilgrims of Hope' and reflects on some of the Holy Year's early initiatives and plans.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

The official Logo of the upcoming Jubilee due to be held in 2025 has been unveiled.

In a press conference held on Tuesday in the Sala Regia of the Vatican's Apostolic Palace, the Vatican revealed the official Logo for the upcoming Jubilee year.

The then-Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, now contained within the new Dicastery for Evangelization, was entrusted with coordinating the Holy See’s preparations for the Holy Year 2025 with the motto: “Pilgrims of Hope.”

The former Council's President, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, revealed the logo and reminded that as preparations begin within the Church for the Holy Year, their Dicastery launched a competition, open to all, for the Logo's creation.

A total of 294 entries were received from 213 cities and 48 different countries, he said, noting participants ranged in age from 6 to 83.

“In fact, many hand-drawn designs were received from children from all over the world, and it was really moving to go through these drawings which were the fruit of imagination and simple faith.”

During the judging, the works were identified only by a number so that the author remained anonymous.

On June 11th, Archbishop Fisichella submitted the three final projects to Pope Francis to select the one that struck him the most.
"After looking at the projects several times and expressing his preference, the project of Giacomo Travisani was chosen," Archbishop Fisichella said.

Giacomo Travisani, present this evening, reflected on what motivated his submission. He said how he had imagined all people moving forward together, able to push ahead "thanks to the wind of Hope that is the Cross of Christ and Christ himself.

A new Vatican monthly magazine 'with the poor'
28 June 2022, 14:45

The first edition of the "Osservatore di Strada" is due to be published on 29 June, giving voice to those whose voices are often ignored.
By Francesca Merlo

On the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, on Wednesday, 29 June, after the Holy Father’s recitation of the Angelus prayer, L'Osservatore Romano’s new monthly magazine will be distributed among the faithful in St Peter's Square.

“L'Osservatore di Strada”, (Osservatore of the Street), is a newspaper conceived and produced by employees of the Dicastery for Communication, working in close collaboration with the poor.

The project intends to give voice to those who are usually not listened to: the poor, people wounded by life, and those who are maginalised and excluded.

Pope at Mass: Church called to promote a culture of care
29 June 2022, 09:21

At Mass to celebrate the feast of Sts Peter and Paul, Pope Francis blesses the pallia for new Metropolitan Archbishops, and reminds the faithful that the Church is called to “get up quickly” and “fight the good fight.”
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis blessed the pallia for the new Metropolitan Archbishops on the feast of Sts Peter and Paul, and presided at the Mass for the Solemnity, which was celebrated by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals.

In his homily at the Mass, the Holy Father focused on two expressions from the day's readings: “Get up quickly,” the command of the angel to St Peter as he languished in prison; and St Paul’s call to Christians to “fight the good fight,” from the Apostle’s Letter to St Timothy.
He reflected on the meaning of these two phrases for "today’s Christian community, engaged in the synodal process”.

Pope at Angelus: Peter & Paul teach us to grow daily in faith
29 June 2022, 12:08

At the Angelus address on the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul, Pope Francis reflects on the Apostles' struggles and imperfections in their faith, and says we can relate to the Patrons of Rome in our struggles to grow in closeness to Jesus.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Even if our faith journey is imperfect, we can ask Saints Peter and Paul to teach us how to always increase our trust in the Lord and grow closer to Him.

During the Angelus, following Mass in St Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis offered this suggestion as he reflected on Saints Peter and Paul on their 29 June feast day.

He began by recalling the day's Gospel according to St. Matthew, in which Peter says to Jesus: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Pope: 'Overcome polemics about the liturgy to rediscover its beauty'
29 June 2022, 12:00

With an Apostolic Letter to the people of God entitled "Desiderio desideravi”, Pope Francis calls for Catholics to overcome forms of aestheticism that appreciate only outward formality or allow sloppiness in liturgy, noting that “a celebration that does not evangelize is not authentic."
By Vatican News

The Pope has written an Apostolic Letter to the people of God on the liturgy, to recall the profound meaning of Eucharistic celebrations as it emerged from the Council and to encourage liturgical formation.

Pope Francis published "Desiderio desideravi" on Wednesday, which includes 65 paragraphs elaborating on the results of the February 2019 plenary of the Dicastery of Divine Worship and follows the motu proprio "Traditionis custodes."

The Pope's Apostolic Letter reaffirms the importance of ecclesial communion around the rite that emerged from the post-conciliar liturgical reform. It is not a new instruction or a directive with specific norms, but rather a meditation on understanding the beauty of liturgical celebration and its role in evangelization. It concludes with an in appeal: "Let us abandon our polemics to listen together to what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Let us safeguard our communion. Let us continue to be astonished at the beauty of the Liturgy” (65).

Pope: Christian reconciliation a way toward peace amid 'senseless' war
30 June 2022, 11:54

Meeting with a delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, Pope Francis thanks God for ecumenical progress over the years, and stresses the need to reconcile with separated Christians, especially as the world faces a "cruel and senseless war."
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Amid "a cruel and senseless war of aggression in which many, many Christians are fighting one another," Pope Francis says "reconciliation among separated Christians as a means of contributing to peace between peoples in conflict" is very timely.

The Holy Father made that point on Thursday when meeting with a delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in the Vatican, the day after the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

Following a long-standing tradition, the delegation is in Rome this week to help build unity between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

The visit comes as part of the “traditional exchange of delegations for the respective feasts of the Patron Saints: 29 June in Rome for the celebration of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and 30 November in Istanbul for the celebration of St. Andrew the Apostle."

The Pope welcomed them this morning, saying he was grateful for their visit, and asked them to convey his greetings to his "dear brother" Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and to the Holy Synod.

Recalling their presence at Wednesday's Eucharistic liturgy, the Pope told them their presence "was a source of great joy" for him and for all present, saying it visibly manifests "the closeness and fraternal charity of the Church of Constantinople towards the Church of Rome."

Pope: Interreligious dialogue 'a providential sign of our times'
30 June 2022, 13:37

In greetings intended for the International Jewish Committee on Interreligious Consultations, Pope Francis emphasizes the importance of Christians and Jews encountering one another and working together to counter negative trends in western society.
By Christopher Wells

“Interreligious dialogue is a sign of the times,” Pope Francis says, adding that he considers it “a providential sign, in the sense that God Himself, in His wise plan, has inspired, in religious leaders and in many others, the desire to encounter and come to know one another in a way respectful of religious differences.”

Pope’s July prayer intention: ‘For the elderly’
30 June 2022, 16:00

Pope Francis releases his prayer intention for the month of July, and urges everyone to pray for the elderly, so that they may be “teachers of tenderness”.
By Devin Watkins

As the Church gears up to celebrate the 2nd World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on 24 July, Pope Francis is calling on Catholics to pray throughout the month for the elderly.

His July prayer request comes on the heels of last month’s intention for families, and was accompanied by The Pope Video.

“We cannot speak about family without talking about the importance of the elderly among us,” said the Pope in the video, tying the two prayer intentions together.

He noted that never before in human history have there been so many elderly people, saying “we don’t quite know how to live this new stage of life: there are many plans for assistance for the old age, but few projects for existence.”

New interview with Pope Francis...

https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2022-07/pope-francis-interview-telam-argentina-crisis-risk-hand.html
“We do not come out from a crisis on our own: we need to take risks and take each other’s hand”
01 July 2022, 12:00

In a Spanish-language interview with Argentina's national news agency Télam, Pope Francis reflects on a wide range of issues, including "building back better," the need to live in harmony with nature, the role of young people in building a better world, and what he has achieved in the first ten years of his papacy. Télam has provided an English translation of the first part of the interview with Pope Francis, which Vatican News offers here.
By Bernarda Llorente

Outside, the blazing sun does not seem to discourage the thousands of tourists who, in full sunshine, share endless lines to enter the Vatican City. Just a few feet away, at Casa Santa Marta, his busy schedule moves forward step by step. Some odd movements announce his arrival. Francis, his Holiness, the Argentine Pope, one of the leaders who set the social and political agenda of the world, walks toward me with a beaming smile on his face. He looks fully recovered. Aware of all the transformations put in place during his nine years of Papacy and with a long-term view regarding the future of humanity, faith, and the need for new answers. As we walk together into the hall where the exclusive interview with Télam (Argentina’s national news agency) will take place during an hour and a half, I know that this 20 June is an exceptional and unique day for me.

Télam: Francis, you have been one of the most important voices in a moment of extreme loneliness and fear in the world, during the pandemic. You defined it as the limitations of a world in economic, social, and political crisis. And then you said, “We do not come out from a crisis the same as before. We either come out better or worse”. In which way do you think we are coming out of this crisis? Where are we headed?

This provisional translation of the first part of the Pope's interview has been provided by Télam. You can find a complete transcript of the interview, in the original Spanish, along with the full hour-long video, here.

Pope to DRC & South Sudan: ‘Never give up hope!’
02 July 2022, 12:03

Pope Francis sends a video message to the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan to apologize profusely for not being able to visit at the moment and to encourage their hope in God.
By Devin Watkins

On the same day he was scheduled to begin his Apostolic Journey, Pope Francis sent his greetings to the people of South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Pope’s Apostolic Journey was postponed due to severe knee pain, and he has sent Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin in his stead until he can make the journey himself.

In a video message sent on Saturday, the Pope expressed his deep sorrow for having had to put off the visit.

“The Lord knows the extent of my regret at being forced to postpone this much-desired and long-awaited visit. Let us not lose faith, but rather cherish the hope of meeting as soon as possible.”
