Pope at Mass for Rome's Congolese community: ‘Peace begins with each of us'
03 July 2022, 10:05

As he presides over Mass in St. Peter's Basilica for the Congolese community in Rome, Pope Francis asks the faithful to join in for prayer for peace for the wounded but vibrant Democratic Republic of Congo.
By Linda Bordoni

At Mass on Sunday with the Congolese community in Rome, on the day he had been scheduled to preside over Mass at Ndolo Airport in Kinshasa, Pope Francis asked for prayers for peace for the wounded nation and reminded Christians that they are called to “Live in peace, kindle peace,” so that peace may dwell in their homes, Church, and country.

Mission

The Pope found inspiration in the Gospel according to Luke that assures us that the nearness of God who is Jesus, the source of our joy, fills us with awe, surprises us and changes our lives. He noted that this is what drove the disciples to go far away, on a mission, to announce God's closeness and proclaim the Word of the Lord.

“If we ask ourselves what our task is in the world, what we are to do as the Church in history, the answer of the Gospel is clear: mission.”

As Christians, the Pope said, we cannot be content to live in mediocrity, for we are missionaries of Jesus, and we are sent into the world “with three missionary surprises that Jesus has in store for the disciples and for each of us.”

Cardinal Parolin at Mass in Kinshasa: ‘May peace return to DRC’
03 July 2022, 15:04

Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin celebrates Mass in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and appeals for Congolese to overcome division and work toward peace.
By Salvatore Cernuzio – Kinshasa, DRC

"Greed for raw materials and the thirst for money and power slam the doors on peace and represent an attack on people's right to life and serenity... Peace upon this house! Peace upon the Congolese land: May you return to being a house of fraternity!"

The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, spoke those words as he celebrated Mass in front of the House of Parliament in Kinshasa.

Around 100,000 Congolese faithful took part in the Mass, which was held at around the same time on Sunday as Pope Francis celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica for Rome’s Congolese community.

Cardinal Parolin offered the Pope’s closeness to the people of the DRC, since he was forced to postpone his Apostolic Journey due to treatment of severe knee pain.

Pope at Angelus: ‘We proclaim Jesus through witness of brotherly love’
03 July 2022, 12:06

Pope Francis reflects on the Sunday Gospel at the Angelus prayer, and urges Christians to bear witness to Jesus through mutual respect and brotherly love.
By Devin Watkins

Ahead of the traditional noon-day prayer of the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis paused to reflect on the day’s Gospel, in which Jesus sends out the 72 disciples in pairs.

He considered why Jesus chose to do so instead of sending them out alone to proclaim the Kingdom of God.

“To go on a mission two by two, from a practical point of view, would seem to bring more disadvantages than advantages,” he said.

The pair of disciples might not get along or proceed at different speeds, he noted.

Yet, Jesus does not think in this manner, said the Pope, and explained why.

New interview with Pope Francis...

https://www.vaticannews.va/en/poewpe/news/2022-07/pope-francis-condemns-abortion-like-hiring-a-hit-man.html
Pope Francis respects US Supreme court decision and condemns abortion
04 July 2022, 10:57

In a wide-ranging interview with American journalist Philip Pullela of Reuters, Pope Francis covers topics such as the recent US Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the possibility of resigning, the decision to postpone his planned Apostolic Visit to South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and his hopes for a trip to Moscow and Kyiv.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis has responded to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, which returned power to regulate abortion to the individual states, saying he respected the decision, but had not studied it enough to comment on it from a juridic point of view. “I tell you the truth. I don’t understand it from a technical point of view,” he explained, adding, “I have to study it because I don’t really understand (the details of) the ruling 50 years ago and now I can’t say whether it did right or wrong from a judicial point of view.” However, he said, “I respect the decisions.”

The science and morality of abortion
The Pope went on to consider the question of abortion itself, saying, “Leaving that [the Supreme Court decision] aside, let’s go back to the issue of abortion, which is a problem.” He said it is important to look at what science has learned in the past few decades: “In this we have to be scientific, see what science tells us today. Science today and any book on embryology, the one our medical students study, tells you that 30 days after conception there is DNA and the laying out already of all the organs.”

He asked, “Is it legitimate, is it right, to eliminate a human life to resolve a problem?” He insisted, “It’s a human life - that’s science. The moral question is whether it is right to take a human life to solve a problem."

“Indeed, is it right to hire a hit man to solve a problem?”

Pope Francis made the remarks in an hour-and-a-half-long interview with Reuters correspondent Philip Pullella, published on Monday.

The Holy Father also emphasized the importance of a pastoral approach to Catholic politicians who support abortion, saying, “When the Church loses its pastoral nature, when a bishop loses his pastoral nature, it causes a political problem. That's all I can say.”

Pope hopes Provisional Agreement with China will be renewed
05 July 2022, 13:17

In an interview with Philip Pullella of Reuters, Pope Francis speaks about the appointment of bishops in the People’s Republic of China.
By Vatican News

The Pope says the Holy See's Provisional Agreement with the People's Republic of China “is going well” and that he hopes it can be renewed next October. Pope Francis made the remarks in an interview with the Reuters news agency, conducted by correspondent Philip Pullella.

Thanks to the Provisional Agreement signed in 2018, the text of which is currently confidential, the situation of the Catholic Church in China was remedied by bringing bishops who had been installed without papal mandate back into full communion with Rome. The Agreement gives the Pope the final word on the appointment of new bishops, while providing a shared path to arrive at an agreement on episcopal nominations.

Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis expressed deep sorrow upon learning of the death of Brazilian Cardinal  Cláudio Hummes, the  Archbishop Emeritus of São Paulo  who passed away Monday at the age of 87. In a telegram addressed to Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer,  the current head of the Archdiocese, the Pope assures him of his prayers for the eternal rest of his predecessor.

Gratitude to God

He also expresses his deep gratitude to God  for Cardinal Hummes’  “dedicated and zealous service” in the various pastoral assignments entrusted to him  in Brazil, and in the Roman Curia  and, for his commitment in more recent  years, for the Amazon.  Remaks that this  pastoral  commitment was “always based on the values of the Gospel“.

The Holy Father  further said he still has a vivid memory of Cardinal Hummes’ words  on the day he was elected Pope, on March  13 2013, asking him  “not to forget the poor”.

By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis has decried the tragic shootings that killed six and wounded some 30 others during a Fourth of July parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park on Monday, appealing for a rejection of all forms of violence, and a respect for life at all its stages.

The Holy Father did so in a telegram sent to the Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Blase Cupich. In the telegram, sent on the Pope's behalf by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, he said he was "deeply saddened" to learn "of the senseless shooting" that took place in the US, and asked the Cardinal to convey his spiritual closeness to all affected by this attack.

The Pope made the remarks in an interview with Reuters Senior Correspondent Philip Pullella, in response to questions about the presence of women in the Vatican; the new Apostolic Constitution Praedicate evangelium, which reforms the Curia; and about which Dicasteries (Vatican offices) could be entrusted to a lay man or woman in the future.

Pope Francis reflects on his personal life in a podcast
06 July 2022, 14:43

The Holy Father met with Argentine priest Guillermo Marcó, who was in charge of the Press Office of the Archbishopric of Buenos Aires for 10 years, while Archbishop Bergoglio was the head of the see. A part of the conversation was broadcast on the priest’s podcast.
By Vatican News

"My heart is a warehouse, it's full of things I keep. I have to expand the shelves all the time. In this I am a bit of a 'collector' in the good sense of the word, I don't want to lose any of the good things that people give me. People gratify you so much, with examples, with words, with one or two deeds. The priest is there to teach people, but I believe that we learn a lot from people if we look at them".

Thus begins the interview that Pope Francis granted to the Argentinean priest Guillermo Marcó, who was in charge of the Press Office of the Archbishopric of Buenos Aires while Bergoglio was Archbishop. 22 minutes of the conversation, which lasted an hour and a half in total and took place on June 9, were published on Sunday, 3 July, in "Marcó tu semana, de la tele a las redes," a podcast produced by Father Marcó.

The conversation focused on more personal questions about the Pope: his spiritual life, his time away from his native Argentina - not current affairs. As many of these topics are dealt with in other media, he preferred to speak about topics “of the simpler life,” addressing “questions that I often ask myself, because when you know someone, you know how he lived, you know how he prayed", said the former spokesman in the presentation of his podcast.

"Many times he would tell you, when faced with a problem: 'Well, let me pray about it and then I'll answer you,'" Fr. Marcó said.

Pope confident that financial reforms will prevent further scandals
07 July 2022, 17:35

In the fourth part of his interview with Phil Pullella of Reuters news agency, Pope Francis discusses the reforms put in place regarding the Vatican's financial issues.
By Vatican News

Responding to a question posed by Reuters news agency, Pope Francis said he believes financial reforms will avoid future scandals, such as those that have hit the headlines in recent years.

He mentioned, in particular, the scandal regarding the purchase and sale of the Sloane Avenue building in London, now under scrutiny in an ongoing trial conducted by the Vatican court.

Speaking about the building in London, the Reuters journalist asked the Pope, "do you believe that enough controls are now in place so that similar scandals could not take place again?"

"I believe so," replied the Pope, immediately listing all the steps that have been taken. Amongst these, he mentioned "the creation of the Secretariat for the Economy with expert, technical people, who don't fall into the hands of 'benefactors or friends', who can make you slip up. I believe that this new dicastery, let's say, which has all the financing in its hands, is a real security in the administration, because before the administration was very messy'.

Pope Francis has offered his "heartfelt condolences" to the loved ones of Shinzo Abe, the former Prime Minister of Japan, in the wake of his assassination on Friday.

Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, sent the telegram expressing the Pope's condolences to the Asian country's Apostolic Nuncio, Leo Boccardi.

The Holy Father expressed his "deep sadness" at learning of the assassination of the former prime minister, and offered his "heartfelt condolences" to Abe's family and friends, and to the people of Japan.

"In the wake of this senseless act," the Pope prayed "that Japanese society will be strengthened in its historic commitment to peace and nonviolence."

Japan's longest-serving modern leader was gunned down on Friday while making a campaign speech.
