Pope Francis entrusts Apostolic Journey to Canada to Our Lady
22 July 2022, 11:13

Pope Francis places his Apostolic Journey to Canada into the hands of Our Lady, praying before the icon of Mary, Salus Populi Romani, in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
By Francesca Merlo

Two nights before Pope Francis's 37th Apostolic Journey abroad, he went as is his custom to the Roman Basilica of Saint Mary Major to entrust his visit to Our Lady, according to a statement from the Holy See Press Office.

Pope Francis will depart Rome on Sunday morning, arriving in Canada around 9:00AM local time.

Penitential pilgrimage

On Sunday during his Angelus, the Holy Father described his journey to Canada as a "penitential pilgrimage", that will hopefully contribute to a process of healing and reconciliation with the country’s indigenous peoples.

During the 24-30 July Visit, the Pope will make stops in Edmonton, Quebec, and the northern city of Iqaluit.

Motu Proprio on Opus Dei to protect charism and promote evangelization
22 July 2022, 13:14

With the document "Ad charisma tuendum," as of August 4, Pope Francis disposes that the Prelature of Opus Dei transfer competencies from the Dicastery for Bishops and establishes that the Prelate can no longer hold episcopal status. Prelate Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz says the Pope asks that the new Prelate “be a guide but above all a father.”
By Alessandro De Carolis

Forty years after the Apostolic Constitution Ut sit, with which Pope St. John Paul II erected Opus Dei as a Personal Prelature, Pope Francis modifies some of its structures on the basis of Praedicate Evangelium, with the aim of "protecting the charism" and "promoting the evangelizing action that its members carry out in the world" by spreading "the call to holiness in the world, through the sanctification of work and family and social commitments."

The Motu Proprio Ad charisma tuendum , promulgated today, establishes new orientations that see the amendment of some Ut sit's articles, harmonizing them with what has been established by the recent Apostolic Constitution.

The Holy See intervened in the German “Synodal Way” on July 21, 2022, warning of a “threat to the unity of the Church.”

Below is the full text of the statement in a working translation into English, provided by CNA:

"In order to safeguard the freedom of the People of God and the exercise of the episcopal ministry, it seems necessary to clarify that the 'Synodal Way' in Germany does not have the power to compel bishops and the faithful to adopt new forms of governance and new orientations of doctrine and morals.

Here’s how to receive a plenary indulgence July 24 on the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly
By Maisy Sullivan
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Jul 23, 2022 / 09:30 am

On July 24, the Catholic Church celebrates its second annual World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.

This special observance, held on the fourth Sunday of July each year, is timed to roughly coincide with the July 26 feast day of Sts. Anne and Joachim, Mary’s mother and father and Jesus’ grandparents.

By visiting the elderly on July 24, Catholics are eligible to receive a plenary indulgence.

A plenary indulgence, as defined by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, is “a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven.” It must be followed by confession, Holy Communion, and prayer as soon as possible afterward. Those who wish to receive it are required to truly intend to remove themselves from sin.

A decree issued by the Apostolic Penitentiary on May 30 said that the indulgence for the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly is available “to the faithful who devote adequate time to visit, in presence or virtually, through the media, their elderly brothers and sisters in need or in difficulty.” The plenary indulgence can also be obtained by attending a solemn commemoration of the annual event by Pope Francis or related celebrations around the world.

Since Pope Francis has said that plenary indulgences can be granted by visiting the elderly either in-person or virtually, this means that a simple phone call can grant you forgiveness from sins, and make beloved grandparents and elderly loved ones smile.

Pope in Canada Day One: on the land of the Indigenous Peoples
25 July 2022, 13:50

Pope Francis’ “penitential pilgrimage” in Canada gets into full swing on Monday morning, with a visit to a former residential school in Maskwacis, about an hour south of Edmonton.
By Christopher Wells, Edmonton

Instead of the usual meetings with civil authorities and members of the diplomatic corps, the Pope’s first stop on this Apostolic Journey will be an encounter with survivors of the notorious residential school system, which for more than a century aimed at assimilating indigenous school children into the prevailing eurocentric culture.

Ermineskin Indian Residential School

The Ermineskin Indian Residential School that Pope Francis is visiting on Monday was one of the largest in Canada and was operated by Catholic missionaries from its foundation in 1895 until the federal government assumed responsibility for the facility in 1969. The school was closed six years later.

Canada's only designated Indigenous Church welcomes Pope

Fr. Susai Jesu, OMI, parish priest of Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples in Edmonton which will host the Pope on the first day of his Apostolic Journey to Canada, reflects on the significance of the Pope’s visit to the community of the only designated Indigenous Church in Canada.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Pope Francis arrived in Canada on Sunday to begin his 37th Apostolic Journey abroad - a “penitential pilgrimage” as he describes it - with an emphasis on the Indigenous peoples of the country who await his message of repentance and reconciliation.

On the lineup of the Holy Father’s activities on Monday is a visit to Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples in Edmonton, which will see him meet with members of the Parish community and the Indigenous peoples, including those who may not have a particular connection to an Indigenous organization or group.

Sacred Heart is Edmonton’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit parish and is the only designated Indigenous Church in all of Canada.

The words sorry, shame, pain and indignation resounded strongly in Pope Francis’s first public speech of his penitential pilgrimage to Canada. Addressing some 2,000 Indigenous people residential school survivors, Chiefs, leaders, elders, knowledge keepers and youth from First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities in Maskwacis Park ("Bear hills", in the Cree language) on Monday, the Pope reiterated his deep sense of “pain and remorse” for the suffering inflicted on the Indigenous peoples of Canada, and specifically for the violence of forced assimilation endured in the residential school system.

Pope: ‘Christ, crucified in Canada's residential school students, reconciles us on Cross’
26 July 2022, 01:28

Pope Francis meets with members of the Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples in Edmonton, and says reconciliation is a gift of Christ to move forward in the wake of the pain caused by the Church’s role in the Canadian residential school system.
By Devin Watkins

“This is the way forward: to look together to Christ, to love betrayed and crucified for our sake; to look to Christ, crucified in the many students of the residential schools.”

Pope Francis set out that path for the Catholic Church in Canada on Monday, as he met with members of the country’s only designated Indigenous parish church.

The Pope held the encounter in the western city of Edmonton with parishioners of the Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, which came on the heels of his public apology for the Church’s role in running residential schools.

Pope in Canada: Preserve your history to protect your future
26 July 2022, 18:00

During Mass celebrated at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on Tuesday - the feast day of Sts Joachim and Anne - Pope Francis reflects on the important role of grandparents in passing down the faith, and highlights the need to preserve the memory of those who preceded us.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

On the second day of his 5-day “Penitential Pilgrimage” to Canada, Pope Francis presided at the Holy Mass at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, with the presence of the faithful.

In the homily, the Holy Father invited everyone to think about their own grandparents, as the Church celebrates the feast day of Saints Joachim and Anne, in whose home the child Jesus came to know his relatives and “experienced the closeness, tender love and wisdom of His grandparents.”

Pope: Indigenous Peoples and grandmothers are a precious treasure of the Church
27 July 2022, 02:37

Following the Mass in the Commonwealth Stadium of Edmonton, on Tuesday, Pope Francis celebrates a Liturgy of the Word at Lac Ste. Anne, one of the most sacred sites for Indigenous peoples of North America, long known as a place of healing. In his homily he says that Indigenous Peoples and grandparents are a precious treasure of the Church.
By Lisa Zengarini

Thousands of pilgrims welcomed Pope Francis as he joined their annual pilgrimage to the sacred shores of Lac Ste. Anne, on Tuesday afternoon, local time.  The lake called Wakamne (“Lake of God”) by the Nakota Sioux and “Lake of the Spirit” by the Cree people, is renowned for its healing waters and for its spiritual significance both to Catholics and Indigenous Peoples in Canada and Northwestern United States.

It was named after St. Anne, the mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus, by a Quebecois Catholic missionary, who launched the pilgrimage in the late 19th century, celebrating the week of her Feast Day, on 26 July.
