Consistory: 20 new Cardinals and 2 Saints for the universal Church
27 August 2022, 13:38

Cardinal-designates from five continents receive their red hat from Pope Francis on Saturday. Members of three religious orders will enter the College of Cardinals, and four new countries will be represented therein: Mongolia, Paraguay, Singapore and East Timor. At the conclusion, they will approve the canonization of the founder of the Scalabrinians, Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, and Salesian layman, Artemide Zatti.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

Existing and new members of the College of Cardinals from every corner of the globe gather in Rome on Saturday, 27 August, for Pope Francis' eighth Consistory, where he creates 20 new cardinals, 16 of whom are under the age of 80, thus electors in a future Conclave, and four non-electors, over the age of 80.
The celebration marks a universal Consistory, with Church leaders from the five continents. It will also be a "mixed" Consistory with the creation of the 20 new cardinals, who vote shortly afterwards on the causes for canonization of two Blesseds. The Consistory takes place at the end of August, which is usually a quiet period, and includes other celebrations over the next two days and next week with the reflection and in-depth study meeting on Praedicate Evangelium, the Apostolic Constitution reforming the Roman Curia.

Rite of creation of new Cardinals

The rite during which Pope Francis will place the red biretta on the new Cardinals, give them their ring, and assign them their title and rank takes place at 4 p.m. in St. Peter's Basilica.

It begins with the singing of "Tu es Petrus" and words of thanksgiving to the Holy Father by the Cardinal first on the list. The Pope pronounces the formula of creation of new cardinals, who promises their allegiance and obedience to the Pope and his successors "even unto the outpouring of blood."

One by one they approach the seat of the Pope to receive on their knees the symbols of the cardinalate: red skullcap, biretta, ring, the bull assigning the title and rank. Each receives an embrace of peace from Pope Francis, a gesture repeated immediately afterward by the Cardinal Dean, the senior Cardinal Priest and senior Cardinal Deacon, representing the entire College of Cardinals.

Pope to new Cardinals: 'May we bring fire of God's love to all'
27 August 2022, 16:25

In his homily during the Consistory, Pope Francis encourages 20 newly-created Cardinals to embrace apostolic zeal and bear witness to God's boundless love, and asks everyone to pray for new Cardinal Richard Kuuia Baawobr, Bishop of Wa, Ghana, who was hospitalized Friday after arriving in Rome.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Quoting a passage from Luke's Gospel when Jesus says, “I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!”, Pope Francis focused his homily on the image of fire, the "powerful flame of the Spirit of God," reflecting "a passionate love that purifies, regenerates and transfigures all things."

He looked at two examples of this "fire": the "consuming fire" of God's love, and the "quiet and gentle" charcoal fire that Jesus started at the shore when cooking fish for the disciples, as recounted in John's Gospel

The Pope was speaking on Saturday at the Ordinary Public Consistory for the creation of Cardinals held in St. Peter's Basilica. This was Pope Francis' eighth Consistory, and he created 20 new Cardinals, 16 of whom are under the age of 80, thus electors in a future Conclave, and four non-electors, over the age of 80. He also asked everyone to pray for Ghanaian Cardinal Richard Kuuia Baawobr, the Bishop of Wa, Ghana, who fell ill upon his arrival in Italy on Friday and spent Saturday in hospital.

One new cardinal did not attend the consistory due to heart problems — Here is what Pope Francis said:
By CNA Staff
CNA Newsroom, Aug 27, 2022 / 13:46 pm

Pope Francis ended his homily during the Aug. 27 consistory mentioning that one cardinal-elect, Richard Kuuia Baawobr of Wa (Ghana), was not present. Francis asked for prayers for the African prelate, explaining Baawobr had been taken ill.

The Holy Father said Cardinal Baawobr had been hospitalized and, therefore, unable to attend the ceremony.

“I do not want to end without recalling Cardinal Richard Kuuia Baawobr, Bishop of Wa, who yesterday, upon his arrival in Rome, felt bad and was hospitalized with a heart problem and I think they did some type of operation,” said Pope Francis after his homily for the day’s festivities.

“Let us pray for this brother who ought to have been here and is hospitalized,” said the Holy Father. “Thank you.”

Pope in L’Aquila: ‘Faith illuminates pain and drives effort to rebuild’

Pope Francis travels to the central Italian city of L’Aquila, 13 years after a devastating earthquake killed 309 people, and encourages residents to continue rebuilding their lives with faith in God.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis traveled 100 km northeast of Rome by helicopter on Sunday morning to the central Italian city of L’Aquila. He kicked off his pastoral visit by meeting civil authorities and families of the victims of the 2009 earthquake, which struck in the middle of the night on 6 April 2009.

Around 66,000 people were left homeless, and 309 people were killed in the wake of the quake and subsequent tremors.

On Sunday, Pope Francis followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who made a visit less than a month after the earthquake, on 28 April 2009. The Pope also visited the ruins of the Cathedral of St. Maximus, which was partially destroyed by the 6.3-magnitude earthquake.

During Mass in the central Italian city of L'Aquila for the occasion of the 'Celestinian Pardon,' Pope Francis recalls God's power to accomplish all things, along with the courageous witness, often misunderstood, of Pope Celestine V who resigned in 1294.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

God can accomplish all things for those who believe. Pope Francis stressed this during the Mass he celebrated in the central Italian city of L'Aquila, where he made a 28 August pastoral visit for the occasion of Celestinian Pardon.

He presided over the Eucharistic Celebration in the square before the Basilica of St. Mary in Collemaggio.

The Pope's visit to the Italian city falls 13 years after a devastating 2009 earthquake which killed 309 people. The month of the quake, then-Pope Benedict XVI visited L'Aquila.

World's Cardinals meet with Pope to reflect on Curia reform
29 August 2022, 12:46

Two days of meetings of the world's Cardinals with Pope Francis are underway in the Vatican to focus on Praedicate Evangelium, offering a chance for Cardinals to get to know each other better and wrapping up with a Mass on Tuesday with the newly-created Cardinals.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

Just under 200 cardinals, out of the College's 226, are participating on Monday and Tuesday (29-30 August) in closed-door meetings convened by Pope Francis to reflect on the Apostolic Constitution Praedicate Evangelium, the document reflecting the Pope's reform of the Roman Curia.

The event will most likely mark the Pope's largest and most attended meeting with the College of Cardinals. In almost ten years of his pontificate, never has such a meeting been held, and such wide attendance was seen only eight years ago when the Pope called the synod on the family (2014-15), inviting some 180 Bishops and Cardinals. Having travelled to Rome from their countries over recent days to welcome the 20 new confreres created Cardinals in the 27 August Consistory, the Cardinals, together with Eastern Patriarchs and Superiors of the Secretariat of State, will participate in the meetings held at the new Synod New Hall during three morning and afternoon working sessions, with a break for lunch.

The two days of meeting will culminate on Tuesday, 30 August, at 5:30 p.m. with a papal Mass in St. Peter's Basilica with the new Cardinals, which Pope Francis was unable to celebrate on Sunday due to his pastoral visit to L'Aquila.

Participants say they received an agenda in recent weeks listing themes and questions on various aspects related to the Document. They are discussing them in language groups, and then will have moments of general discussion at the plenary sessions in the Hall.

Cardinals discuss importance of Church's communion and outreach
29 August 2022, 16:25

The first day of the two-day meeting of the Cardinals with Pope Francis to reflect on Praedicate Evangelium focuses on the importance of communion in the Church and the missionary calling to witness to God's love for all.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Italian Cardinal Enrico Feroci, parish priest of Santa Maria del Divino Amore (Our Lady of Divine Love) in Castel di Leva, spoke to Vatican News about the first session of the Cardinals' meeting with Pope Francis on Monday, describing the very fraternal atmosphere characterizing it.

After the opening prayer, Pope Francis offered some brief introductory words inviting everyone to participate and offer their own contribution to the discussions during these two days of reflection on Praedicate Evangelium, the Apostolic Constitution reforming the Roman Curia.

The cardinals then divided into various language groups, and later met all together again to share their reflections.

'Taken out of context': Pontifical Academy defends Archbishop Paglia's abortion law remarks
By AC Wimmer
Rome Newsroom, Aug 29, 2022 / 06:49 am

The Pontifical Academy for Life on Monday clarified remarks of the Academy's president on Italian television that the law legalizing abortion in Italy was a "pillar of society".

Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia had been taken out of context, a spokesperson said in a statement sent to CNA on request.

"The intention of this statement was not to make a value judgment about the law, but to state that it is practically impossible to abolish Law 194, since it is now a structural part of the relevant legislation," Fabrizio Mastrofini explained.

"So there is much to say about the quality of the 'pillar.’"

In his interview with Italian state television Rai Tre, Paglia said, “I believe that at this point Law 194 is a pillar of our society.”

Italy's “Law 194,” established in 1978, made abortion legal for any reason within the first 90 days of pregnancy, and afterward for specific reasons with a physician's referral.

Paglia said on Italian television: “In my opinion, and I have written as much, I would like to see more emphasis on the part that is hardly spoken of, namely the right to motherhood, to see our country grow, in the face of the drama of a generational imbalance that is quite dramatic.”

The prelate added he would “exhort to look with trust upon a country that wishes to live in liberty, development, and progress, and I think that the crisis in natality is a problem on which we have unfortunately not reflected and it is already late.”

Curia Reform Meeting concludes with focus on 2025 Jubilee of Hope
30 August 2022, 17:35

The final meeting of a two-day encounter in the Vatican that saw the participation of some 190 Cardinals from across the globe takes place in the Vatican on Tuesday afternoon.
By Linda Bordoni

A Holy See Press Office communiqué on Tuesday revealed that the last session of the encounter convoked by Pope Francis was dedicated to discussing various aspects of the 2025 Jubilee of Hope.

The assembly will dissolve on Tuesday evening after the celebration of Holy Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica presided over by Pope Francis, after which, the communiqué says,  “each participant can return to his own diocese.”

Free discussion

The Holy See Press Office also said “The work in language groups, and the discussions in the Synod Hall provided the opportunity for participants to freely discuss many aspects of the Document and of the life of the Church.”

The Meeting has seen almost the entire College of Cardinals gathered in the Vatican with Pope Francis for the first time since the start of his pontificate almost 10 years ago.

The prelates have been discussing the new challenges faced by the Curia and by the Universal Church, focusing on important themes such as the role of lay persons, financial transparency, synodality, a new administrative organization, the call to mission and the proclamation of the Gospel in today’s world.

Members of the College of Cardinals gather with Pope Francis for an evening Mass on Tuesday, marking the culmination of several events at the Vatican, and the Pope encourages us to renew our wonder and gratitude before God's saving plan.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis presided over the Mass with the new Cardinals and College of Cardinals in St. Peter's Basilica early Tuesday evening.

The celebration followed Saturday's Consistory for the creation of new Cardinals and two days of meetings of all the Cardinals to discuss Praedicate Evangelium, the new Apostolic Constitution of the Roman Curia.

The Mass took place three days after the Consistory given Sunday's pastoral visit of Pope Francis to the Italian city of L'Aquila and the Monday and Tuesday meetings with the Cardinals. Some 190 Cardinals, as well as Eastern Patriarchs and Superiors of the Secretariat of State, participated in the two days of discussion and reflection.

Ukraine, the Holy See: Pope defends life rather than taking political positions
30 August 2022, 12:05

In response to polemics that have arisen in recent days concerning the words of Pope Francis, a communiqué from the Holy See cites the Pope’s “numerous” interventions concerning the war, and recalls that he has always condemned the Russian aggression as “morally unjust, unacceptable, barbaric, senseless, repugnant, and sacrilegious.
By Vatican News

The Pope speaks as a pastor who defends every human life, and not as a politician: that is the correct lens through which to view his numerous interventions concerning the war in Ukraine.

This is the affirmation of a communiqué from the Holy See, released one week after the words of Pope Francis at the Audience of Wednesday, 24 August, and his mention of the attack in which the daughter of Russian political analyst Alexander Dugin lost her life in Russia – words which have provoked controversial reactions at the political and institutional level in Ukraine.

30 August 2022, 14:15

Internationally-recognized artists from around the world, including Denzel Washington, Andrea Bocelli, and Patricia Heaton will join Pope Francis for the first-ever “Vitae Summit” at the Vatican on August 31 – September 1 to begin a conversation on how to use the arts to foster a culture of hope and unity.
By Vatican News staff reporter

A two-day summit will be held from August 31 – September 1 by the Vitae Global Foundation at the Casina Pio IV inside the walls of Vatican City.

Participants include arts, media, and entertainment personalities who will join Pope Francis to discuss how to “leverage the arts, media, and entertainment to trigger a cultural transformation that promotes the common good, universal values, and an encounter between people.”

Two days of encounter

On Tuesday, the VITAE Global organization announced the guest list of summit participants (found below), including American-born actor Denzel Washington and Italian-born singer Andrea Boccelli.

World famous artists, actors, actresses, and musicians will hold meetings to share their thoughts on strategies and creative proposals and initiate a conversation on how to turn people toward more meaningful and inspiring content.

Hope, unity, and the common good are the main themes of the summit framed amongst the overall goal of inspiring a change in the world through art.

By Devin Watkins & Lisa Zengarini

Mikhail Gorbachev died at hospital in Moscow on Tuesday following a lengthy illness at the age of 91.

Pope Francis sent a telegram of condolences on Wednesday to the former Soviet statesman’s daughter, Ms. Irina Gorbachev.

The Pope expressed his “spiritual closeness” during this time of grief, and extended his “heartfelt condolences” to his family members and everyone who saw him as a valued statesman.

“As we gratefully remember his far-sighted commitment to concord and fraternity amongst peoples, as well as to the progress of his own country at a time of important changes, I raise prayers of suffrage, invoking eternal peace for his soul from the good and merciful God.”

Pope at Audience: ‘Discernment requires loving relationship with God’
31 August 2022, 09:14

At the weekly General Audience, Pope Francis launches a new catechesis series on discernment, and says learning to choose what is best for our lives requires us to have a close relationship with God.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis kicked off a new series of catecheses on discernment at the Wednesday General Audience, reflecting on the question: “What does it mean to discern?”

Discernment, he said, is a process which everyone must learn to master in order to live well.

“One chooses food, clothing, a course of study, a job, a relationship,” he said. “In all of these, a life project is realised, and so is our relationship with God.”

Pope’s September prayer intention: For abolition of the death penalty
31 August 2022, 16:00

In his prayer intention for September, Pope Francis calls on all people of good will “to mobilize for the abolition of the death penalty throughout the world.”
By Vatican News staff reporter

“Each day, there is a growing ‘NO’ to the death penalty around the world,” says Pope Francis in the video released on Wednesday announcing his prayer intention for September. “For the Church, this is a sign of hope.”

In The Pope Video, produced by the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network, the Holy Father maintains that the death penalty is not necessary “from a legal point of view.”

He argues that “society can effectively repress crime without definitively depriving offenders of the possibility of redeeming themselves.”

He adds that there must be “a window of hope” in every legal sentence. Capital punishment, he says, “offers no justice to victims, but rather encourages revenge. And it prevents any possibility of undoing a possible miscarriage of justice.”

Behind the scenes and between the lines: Cardinals debate laity, power, synodality
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Rome Newsroom, Aug 31, 2022 / 07:41 am

There were no press conferences, reports, or sensational announcements at the end of the extraordinary consistory convened by Pope Francis to discuss the reform of the Roman Curia.

197 cardinals from all over the world came to participate. One of them, the new Ghanaian Cardinal Richard Bawoobr, was unable to attend because he was hospitalized.

All participants received a text written by Bishop Marco Mellino, secretary to the Council of Cardinals. Unfortunately, however, they did not have a plenary discussion, and the time for debate was limited.

The cardinals were encouraged to deliver a report or to provide a written text if they had prepared one, which would be for the pope's consideration.

CNA was able to view some of these texts. To respect the confidentiality of the sources, however, only indirect reference will be made to these.

Pope: Liturgy must look to God without being worldly
01 September 2022, 12:51

n an address to an Italian association of liturgists, Pope Francis warns against “worldly” approaches to the liturgy, saying liturgy must be directed to the Mystery of Christ while remaining close to daily life.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis on Thursday addressed the Italian Associazione dei Professori e Cultori di Liturgia (Association of Professors and Practitioners of Liturgy) on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the organization’s foundation.

The Pope noted that fifty years corresponds to “the ecclesial season of this liturgical reform”: following the initial phase marked by the publication of new liturgical books, "we are now in a period of deepening acceptance of the reform." This process, he said, requires not only time but also “passionate and patient care,” “spiritual and pastoral understanding,” and ongoing formation.

He encouraged members of the Association to continue to pursue their work in a spirit of dialogue.

“Theology can and must have a synodal style.”
