Pope to visit Kazakhstan to promote interreligious dialogue and peace
09 September 2022, 13:29

As Pope Francis prepares to fly to Kazakhstan on Tuesday, the Holy See Press Office shares details of his 38th Apostolic Journey abroad, which will see him participate in the 7th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Nur-Sultan, while showing his closeness to the country's small but fervent Catholic community.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis’ upcoming Apostolic Visit to Kazakhstan on 13-15 September will be the Holy Father's latest gesture to promote peace in the world with the help of religious leaders, suggests the Director of the Holy See Press Office. Matteo Bruni noted that this is yet another gesture in a papacy full of interreligious efforts.

During a briefing at the Holy See Press Office on Friday, Mr. Bruni presented the Pope’s 38th Apostolic Visit abroad. The Central Asian nation will be the 57th country the Holy Father has visited.

With his visit next week, Pope Francis follows in the footsteps of his predecessor, St. John Paul II who travelled to Kazakhstan shortly after the September 11 attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon in the United States. During his visit, St. John Paul II applauded the peaceful coexistence of religions and ethnicities, such as Kazakh, Russian, Ukrainian, and many others, within the country.

Kazakhstan gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Pope to catechists: 'Share a living experience of the faith'
10 September 2022, 12:49

Pope Francis welcomes catechists taking part in the Third International Congress on Catechesis, and encourages them to transmit a lived experience of the faith, while remembering their calling to show others the love of Jesus Christ.
By Thaddeus Jones

Greeting the participants gathered at the Vatican for the Third International Congress on Catechesis, organized by the Dicastery for Evangelization, Pope Francis expressed his joy in meeting with them and paid tribute to their international diversity.

The Pope stressed the very important role catechists play in the Church, calling them "a sign of the Church's responsibility to so many people: children, young people and adults who wish to make a journey of faith." He explained that he instituted the ministry of Catechist knowing the great role it can play in the Christian community.

Pope Francis pointed out that he greeted everyone at this audience as catechists, including the bishops, priests and consecrated members among them, as all are catechists. "The Lord calls us all to make His Gospel resound in the heart of every person."

The Pope also shared that he truly enjoys his weekly General Audience on Wednesday at the Vatican, since it is a "privileged time" to reflect together on the Word of God in light of the Church's tradition and find ways to witness to the Gospel in our daily lives.

By Vatican News staff reporter

Greeting pilgrims in St. Peter's Square for the Sunday Angelus prayer, Pope Francis shared reflections on the day's Gospel reading, which presents three parables of mercy Jesus tells in response to the pharisees and scribes who complained about His welcoming sinners and eating with them.

The Pope said these parables reveal that God "excludes no one; He wants everyone at His banquet, because He loves everyone as His children."

Vatican publishes schedule for papal trip to Kazakhstan
By Carol Glatz
Aug 2, 2022 | Catholic News Service

ROME — Pope Francis’s September visit to Kazakhstan will mostly focus on a gathering of religious leaders from around the world, but it will also include a Mass and meeting with Catholics in this Muslim-majority nation.

The Vatican Aug. 2 released the pope’s schedule for the Sept. 13-15 trip, which also includes private meetings with religious leaders and his fellow Jesuits.

Kazakhstan is a former Soviet Republic in Central Asia that gained independence in 1991. After experiencing Soviet-led atheist policies, the new nation adopted a secular form of government.

While there was a revival of religious practice and identity, religious movements and missionaries from foreign countries also began gaining influence in the nation, according to a 2018 report by the Stockholm-based nonprofit and nonpartisan research and policy organization, the Institute for Security and Development Policy.
Rather than following a more Western approach of wide religious freedom, the country adopted increasing restrictions aimed at countering extremist influences after a number of incidents of terrorism. It also adopted measures hoping to encourage the revival of traditional religious communities and ensure stability and harmony in society, the report said.

Of the country’s more than 19 million people, about 70 percent are Muslim and 26 percent are Christian — Russian Orthodox being the majority. Nearly 3 percent identify as atheist and less than 1 percent as other.

Upon his arrival in the nation’s capital of Nur-Sultan, the pope will meet with the country’s president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, as well as with government authorities and members of the country’s diplomatic corps.

The next day, he will take part in a silent prayer with religious leaders attending the VII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions and give an address to the assembly. He also will meet with religious leaders privately and give an address on the last day of the congress, which will present a final declaration.

Here is the detailed schedule released by the Vatican Aug. 2. Times listed are local, with Eastern Daylight Time in parenthesis:

Tuesday, Sept. 13 (Rome, Nur-Sultan)

— 7:15 a.m. (1:15 a.m.) Departure from Rome’s Fiumicino airport.
— 5:45 p.m. (7:45 a.m.) Arrival at Nur-Sultan international airport.
— 6:30 p.m. (8:30 a.m.) Welcoming ceremony at the presidential palace, followed by a courtesy visit to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
— 7:30 p.m. (9:30 a.m.) Meeting with authorities and members of the diplomatic corps at the Kazakh Central Concert Hall. Speech by pope.

Pope to civil authorities in Kazakhstan: 'Harmonise with your past and present'
13 September 2022, 11:12

Pope Francis meets with civil authorities and the diplomatic corps in Kazakhstan, and urges them to find harmony, as they do in their history and traditions, to allow peace and democracy to prevail in the country.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis arrived in Kazakhstan on Tuesday for his 38th Apostolic Journey outside of Italy. Meeting on that same afternoon with Authorities, Civil Society, and the Diplomatic Corps in Nur-Sultan, the Pope offered a "cordial greeting" to all, before expressing his "honour" at being there as "a pilgrim of peace, seeking dialogue and unity".
The Pope began by stressing the urgency with which our world needs peace and to "recover its harmony". He went on to use the Kazakh traditional instrument, dombra, one of the most important symbols of the country, as an example of this.

As he shared photos, handshakes and jokes about knee-related health problems, Pope Francis received a special gift on Tuesday as he greeted journalists at the beginning of his flight from Rome to Nur-Sultan.

Eva Fernández, a reporter for Spanish Radio station Cope, gave the Pope a pagne—or stole—which is a traditional garment of Mozambique, where it called a capulana, and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa and can symbolize life.

Pope Francis on papal plane: ‘I’m always ready to go to China’
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Sep 13, 2022 / 04:59 am

Pope Francis told journalists on the papal plane Tuesday that he is ready for the first papal trip to China.

In a conversation with reporters on the flight from Rome to Kazakhstan on Sept. 13, the pope said: “I’m always ready to go to China.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit Kazakhstan on Sept. 14, midway through Pope Francis’ three-day trip to the Central Asian country. Reuters reported that the pope said he did not “have any news” about the speculation that he might meet Xi during the trip.

The coinciding visits of Francis and Xi come as the Holy See and China determine the renewal of a provisional agreement on the appointment of bishops in China and a Catholic cardinal is preparing to stand trial in Hong Kong for his role in a pro-democracy legal fund.

In his address at the 7th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, Pope Francis underscores how religions need to grow in friendship in order to respond to the thirst for world peace and for the infinite that dwells in the heart of each of us.
By Vatican News staff reporter

The first major event on the Pope's schedule in Kazakhstan took place on Wednesday morning in the nation's capital of Nur-Sultan when he addressed participants at the 7th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.

The two-day meeting, which takes place every three years, has brought together religious leaders from around the world to focus this time on how religious leaders can foster the spiritual and social development in the post-pandemic world. Over 100 delegations from 50 countries are attending the Congress, made up of religious, cultural, civil, governmental, and non-governmental representatives.

Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill meeting still possible at future date, Russian Orthodox metropolitan says

Rome Newsroom, Sep 14, 2022 / 05:17 am

Pope Francis met Wednesday with the head of the Russian Orthodox delegation in Kazakhstan, who said that a second papal meeting with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow is still on the table.

Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, who is in charge of foreign relations for the Russian Orthodox Church, told a pool of Vatican journalists on Sept. 14 that a second meeting between the patriarch and the pope would require significant preparation.

The metropolitan insisted that this meeting “needs to be well prepared” and should produce an appeal at the end, like what was signed by Pope Francis and Kirill in the first-ever meeting between a pope and a Russian patriarch in Havana, Cuba, in 2016.

Pope at Mass in Kazakhstan: 'Our salvation is to behold Jesus crucified'

Pope Francis presides over Mass for the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at the EXPO Grounds in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, and says that from the crucified Jesus, Christians learn “love, not hatred; compassion, not indifference; forgiveness, not vengeance.”
By Christopher Wells

Although representing less than 1% of the country's population, members of Kazakhstan’s small Catholic community turned out by the thousands to participate in the Holy Mass presided over by Pope Francis in Nur-Sultan’s EXPO Centre on Wednesday.

Although “the Cross is a gibbet of death,” Pope Francis said in his homily, “today we celebrate [the Feast of] the Exaltation of the Cross of Christ, for on its wood Jesus took upon Himself all our sin and the evil of the world, and vanquished them by His love.”

Russian pilgrims join Pope Francis at Mass in Kazakhstan
14 September 2022, 14:17

On the occasion of Pope Francis’ 3-day Apostolic Journey to Kazakhstan, the Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow has organized a special pilgrimage to the Central Asian nation running from 12-15 September. The Auxiliary Bishop of Moscow explains the importance of their participation and of the Pope’s visit to the region for Russian Catholics at this difficult time.
By Lisa Zengarini

Among the thousands of Catholic faithful attending the Holy Mass presided over by Pope Francis at the “EXPO Grounds" in Nur-Sultan on Wednesday, there was also a small representation of pilgrims from Russia.

The pilgrimage is organized by the Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow under the motto “We are witnesses of unity”, to express the closeness and support of the Catholic Church in Russia to the Pope as he brings his message of peace and fraternity to neighbouring Kazakhstan in these difficult times for the region and the entire world.

The group, which departed from Moscow on 12 September, arrived in the Kazakh capital on Wedneday, after stopping in the Siberian city of Omsk, in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, and visiting Karlag, one of the largest Soviet gulags. It was in Karlag, between 1930 and 1960, that tens of thousands of inmates, including Russian Christians, lost their lives.
