Pope appeals to Putin to stop war and Zelensky to be open to serious peace offers
02 October 2022, 12:06

Pope Francis expresses concern over the nuclear threat and military escalation in the war in Ukraine, dedicating his entire Angelus address to the situation and issuing a powerful appeal for an immediate ceasefire. He deplores the annexations, calls for respect for the territorial integrity of every country and the rights of minorities. He is saddened by the thousands of victims, especially children.
By Vatican News

We publish below a working translation of Pope Francis' address in Italian before leading the recitation of Sunday's midday Angelus prayer in Saint Peter's Square.

Dear brothers and sisters, buongiorno!

The course of the war in Ukraine has become so serious, devastating and threatening, as to cause great concern. Therefore, today I would like to devote the entire reflection before the Angelus to this. Indeed, this terrible and inconceivable wound to humanity, instead of healing, continues to shed even more blood, risking to spread further.

Pope's October prayer intention: A Church that walks together
03 October 2022, 16:00

Pope Francis releases his prayer intention for the month of October, in which he asks that the Church be one of synodality, which means walking together, along the same road.
By Francesca Merlo

As is customary at the beginning of every month, Pope Francis has released his prayer intention for the month of October: "A Church that is open to everyone".

In The Pope Video, produced by the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network, the Holy Father begins by asking "What does it mean 'to synod'?", before answering himself, that it means walking together: syn-od. He explains that in Greek, the word synod means to walk together, and to walk on the same road.

Video on St. Peter’s facade ‘an encounter between ancient and modern,’ cardinal says
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Oct 3, 2022 / 13:02 pm

The facade of St. Peter’s Basilica was illuminated on Sunday night with 3-D projection mapping of art from the Vatican Museums in a new light display that seeks to combine new and old.

Cardinal Mauro Gambetti described the Vatican’s new light showcase as “an encounter between ancient and modern using 3-D production technologies to enhance masterpieces of the past with a message aimed at the future.”

The cardinal spoke in St. Peter’s Square on Oct. 2 at the opening of the light display, which is showing each night on the basilica for the next two weeks.

Thousands gathered in front of St. Peter’s Basilica to watch the eight-minute video, “Follow Me: The Life of St. Peter,” on the first night as the basilica was lit up with moving images of Renaissance art from the Vatican Museums.

The video display will be projected on the facade of St. Peter’s Basilica every 15 minutes between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. each night through Oct. 16.

By Sophie Peeters

Pope Francis met on Monday with members of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) on the occasion of their 37th General Chapter. The missionary order was founded in 1816 by St. Eugene de Mazenod in the south of France.

In his address to members of the Congregation, the Pope offered his well-wishes to Fr. Luis Ignacio Rois Alonso, who was elected last Thursday as the new OMI Superior General for a 6-year term. He also thanked the previous Superior General, Fr. Louis Lougen, for his service over the past 12 years.

Pope Francis meets Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Vatican
By Courtney Mares
CNA Newsroom, Oct 3, 2022 / 04:22 am

Pope Francis met with Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Vatican on Monday morning.

Cook heads up a company whose stock market value hit $3 trillion in June. He spoke privately with Pope Francis on Oct. 3, the eve of the feast day of the pope’s namesake, St. Francis of Assisi — known for embracing radical poverty.

The technology executive has been in Italy since Sept. 28. He first traveled to Naples, where he launched the first Apple Developer Academy in Europe and received an honorary degree from the University of Naples Federico II.

Top Russian prelate says relations with Vatican are ‘practically frozen’
By Elise Ann Allen
Oct 3, 2022

ROME – Less than a month after meeting briefly with Pope Francis in Kazakhstan, one of the Russian Orthodox Church’s most senior prelates has said that relations between the two churches are more or less at a standstill.

In an interview with the “Church and Peace” program on Russian television station Russia 24, Metropolitan Anthony Sevryuk of Volokolamsk, the Russian Orthodox Church’s “foreign minister,” said that “currently relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic one, are practically frozen.”

“At this stage I must say that some comments we read and hear not only from the lips of the pope, but also the great part of his aides, absolutely do not contribute to the preparation of a new meeting and our further cooperation,” he said, referring to efforts being made to organize a second meeting between Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill.

Vatican unveils new documentary on climate change
04 October 2022, 12:17

A new documentary “on humanity’s power to stop the ecological crisis” facing the world is presented at a press conference at the Vatican on Tuesday. The film “The Letter,” says Cardinal Michael Czerny, “is a clarion cry to people everywhere: we have to act together, we have to do it now.”
By Christopher Wells

A new documentary by filmmaker Nicolas Brown “highlights the key concept of dialogue,” Cardinal Michael Czerny explained on Tuesday, at the presentation of the film “The Letter” at the Holy See Press Office.

The film itself is aimed at conveying the messages of Pope Francis’ encyclical letter Laudato si’. Despite the encyclical’s “widespread impact on the global stage” since its publication seven years ago, “the environmental crisis of our common home has worsened drastically,” the Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development said.

Vatican presents accession to UN and Paris Climate Agreements
04 October 2022, 20:14

The Holy See deposits its instrument of accession to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention, and the Paris Agreement signed in 2015, to the United Nations Secretariat, and holds an event in the Vatican to celebrate the occasion.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

"At this particular moment in our history, marked by increasingly troubling conflicts that undermine multilateralism, it is necessary to consolidate our efforts in favor of integral ecology - an issue that - like climate change - is in danger of being overshadowed."

Speaking on Tuesday, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, who inspired the Pope's commitment to the care of our common home, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin announced that the Holy See, on behalf of Vatican City State, has joined the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), adopted in 1992, and the Paris Agreement signed in 2015.

Pope's appeal with religious leaders and scientists

Cardinal Parolin spoke at a meeting organized by the Secretariat of State, in collaboration with the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences, in the Casina Pio IV to reflect on the theme "Care for our Common Home". It was an important moment of reflection and sharing (online and in presence) that also took place in view of COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh on November 6-18.

Significantly, the evnet took place on the first anniversary of the "Faith and Science: Towards COP26" event, which was held in the Apostolic Palace on 4 October 2021. That event saw numerous religious leaders and scientists from scientific traditions and fields sign, together with the Pope, an appeal to move decisively and with conviction from the "throwaway culture" to a "culture of care" for the planet.

Analysis: Amid new testimonies, Vatican corruption trial points to key question
By Andrea Gagliarducci
Vatican City, Oct 4, 2022 / 11:00 am

The hearings at the Vatican’s corruption trial resumed last week and shed light on new aspects of the “trial of the century” and the broader context of Vatican finances.

Behind every decision and litigation, in the end, one can glimpse a power struggle, whether it is big or small, systemic or personal.

Primarily, the trial revolves around the Secretariat of State’s investment in luxury real estate in London. However, it also explores further criminal allegations.

Cardinal Angelo Becciu, for instance, also faces charges for allocating money from the Secretariat of State to Caritas in his native region. The Sardinian is furthermore called to answer for the engagement of Cecilia Marogna as a consultant to the Secretariat of State.

However, the big deal at the center of the trial is the luxury property investment.

The Secretariat of State bought shares of the property on London’s Sloane Avenue and repeatedly changed brokers — apparently to make the investment profitable — before deciding to buy the property, only to sell it at a considerable loss.

The court will determine if the businessmen who profited on the Secretariat of State’s investment behaved legally and in accordance with the contracts.

A broader scenario emerges

Pope at Audience: Prayer, self-knowledge enable us to grow in freedom
05 October 2022, 09:20

Pope Francis encourages Christians to strive toward self-knowledge by engaging in patient soul-searching in order to discover what we are most sensitive to, as well as recognize what is truly important for us during his catechesis at the General Audience on Wednesday.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis continued his cycle of reflections on the theme of discernment during his catechesis at the Wednesday General Audience.

Addressing the faithful, the Pope highlighted that good discernment also requires self-knowledge because “it involves our human faculties: memory, intellect, will, affections.”

“Often, we do not know how to discern because we do not know ourselves well enough, and so we do not know what we really want,” the Pope said.

Vatican Museums' visitor throws two busts to the ground
06 October 2022, 10:35

Two ancient busts of the Chiaramonti Gallery suffer slight damage after they were thrown down early Wednesday afternoon by an American tourist visiting the Vatican Museums, and were immediately brought into the restoration laboratories of the pontifical galleries.

On Wednesday, a man in a state of agitation threw down two ancient Roman busts preserved in the Chiaramonti Gallery of the Vatican Museums, which date back to the 1st century.

He was handed over by the Vatican Gendarmerie to the Italian police for questioning.

Reports say the man was an American tourist of Egyptian origin, about sixty years old, who had been in Rome for three days.

By Vatican News staff reporter

More than 30 people died, including 23 children, in a violent attack at a daycare centre for children in the northeast of Bangkok, Thailand.

Police have identified the attacker as an ex-policemen who burst into the daycare in a horrific rampage, killing mostly children. It is one of the worst child death tolls in a massacre by a single killer in recent history.

In response, Pope Francis sent a telegram, signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, expressing his “deep sadness” and offering his heartfelt condolences to those affected by the attack.

“Deeply saddened to learn of the horrific attack that took place at a child-care centre in Uthai Sawan, His Holiness Pope Francis offers his heartfelt condolences and the assurance of his spiritual closeness to all those affected by this act of unspeakable violence against innocent children.”

2022 Ratzinger Prize goes to theologian and to professor of law
07 October 2022, 13:12

Michel Fédou, SJ, and Professor Joseph H.H. Weiler are the winners of the Ratzinger Prize 2022, the prestigious award that is given to scholars who stand out for their scientific research in the theological field.
By Linda Bordoni

On 1 December next, Pope Francis will award the Ratzinger Prize 2022 to Professor Michel Fédou, SJ, and to Professor Joseph Halevi Horowitz Weiler during a ceremony in the Apostolic Palace’s  Clementine Hall.

The prestigious award is assigned – according to what is recommended by the Ratzinger Foundation’s Statutes – to “scholars that stood out for their publications and/or scientific research”.

It was launched in 2011 to recognize scholars whose work demonstrated authentic and meaningful contributions to theology, much like Pope Benedict XVI had throughout his life. In the past few years, the prize has also been given to academics, composers, artists, and writers who have made notable contributions to the world of arts related to Christianity.

Pope: Inclusive growth begins with a gaze that is not turned in on itself
08 October 2022, 12:00

Pope Francis highlights the importance of a new outlook for the future based on inclusive growth and sustainable development in his address to the Centesimus Annus Foundation.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

Pope Francis met with the participants in the meeting of the Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation in the Vatican on Saturday morning.

In his address to them, he acknowledged all the work carried out by the Foundation, particularly regarding the Church’s social doctrine: first, at the level of reception - making it known and understood; then at the level of deepening, because they read the complex economic and social world from the inside, and can continually compare the doctrine with reality, which is always in motion and always changing.

Pope: Blessed Artemide Zatti dedicated his whole life to the sick
08 October 2022, 12:25

On the eve of Blessed Artemide Zatti’s canonization, Pope Francis recalls the Salesian brother as a migrant, a friend of the poor, a religious brother, and an intercessor for vocations.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis on Saturday welcomed members of the Salesian religious family to the Vatican, on the eve of the canonization of Blessed Artemide Zatti.

Zatti, a professed Salesian brother, was born in Italy and emigrated to Argentina as a young man. He became a pharmacist, and was renowned for his care of the sick.

In his address to the Salesians, Pope Francis recalled the various aspects of Zatti’s character, noting that, with the support of his family, Zatti maintained his faith while many other migrants lost theirs.
