Pope canonizes founder of Scalabrinians, Salesian pharmacist
09 October 2022, 11:11

Pope Francis presides over the canonization Mass of Bishop Giovanni Battista Scalabrini and Artemide Zatti, recalling how these holy men lived as examples of an inclusive Church and encouraging the faithful to relearn how to humbly give gratitude for our lives and God’s presence in it.
By Sophie Peeters

Pope Francis presided over the beatification mass of now-Saints Bishop Giovanni Battista Scalabri and Salesian Brother Artemide Zatti in Saint Peter's Square on Sunday. The Mass was co-celebrated by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, with fifty thousand faithful participating.

In his homily, Pope Francis reflected on the Gospel of Luke which tells the story of the ten lepers who, after crying out to Jesus for mercy, were healed, with only one Samaritan realizing his healing and turned around “praising God with a loud voice” (Lk 17:15).

The Pope invited the faithful to reflect on two aspects of the Gospel: walking together and giving thanks.

Pope to Scalabrinian missionaries: To be inclusive we must be creative
10 October 2022, 12:30

Pope Francis meets with Scalabrinian missionaries who travelled to Rome for the canonization of their Founder, and urges them to promote a message of humanity and encounter, while never hesitating to be creative.
By Francesca Merlo

Addressing a group of Scalabrinian missionaries, who are in Rome for the Canonization of St. John Baptist Scalabrini, Pope Francis commented on the diversity of their assembly, noting that in this way, "you well represent the breadth of Bishop Scalabrini's work, the openness of his heart, to which, so to speak, one diocese was not enough."

During the audience on Monday, the Pope then spoke of Bishop Scalabrini's work, saying his apostolate in favour of Italian emigrants was "of great importance".

Pope Francis expresses condolences to victims of explosion in Ireland

CNA Newsroom, Oct 10, 2022 / 08:42 am

Pope Francis has assured his “spiritual closeness” to those affected by an Oct. 7 gas station explosion in northwest Ireland.

In a message sent to Bishop Alan McGuckian of Raphoe, the pontiff said he was “saddened to learn of the loss of life and destruction caused.”

The Catholic primate of Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh, visited Creeslough on Monday and spoke to some of those involved in the rescue effort, RTE reported.

An explosion on Friday afternoon at a gas station in Creeslough, County Donegal, killed 10 people, three of them children. At least eight more people were wounded and taken to the hospital, according to local media reports.

“His holiness implores the divine blessings of consolation and healing upon the injured, the displaced, and the families coping with the pain of loss,” the Vatican message, signed by Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said.

The letter, dated Oct. 8 and published by Highland Radio, continued: “While entrusting the deceased to the merciful love of almighty God, his holiness implores the divine blessings of consolation and healing upon the injured, the displaced, and the families coping with pain of loss.”

“As a pledge of strength and peace in the Lord, the Holy Father sends his blessing to all the people in Ireland.”

In a message marking the 60th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II, the organizers of the Synod on Synodality called the Synod of Bishops a “fruit” of the council.

Quoting Pope Francis, the synod’s general secretariat on Monday said the synod was “indeed one of [the Council’s] most precious legacies.”

An overview of the Second Vatican Council
11 October 2022, 10:01

Pope John XXIII officially opened the Second Vatican Council on 11 October 1962 during a solemn ceremony inside St. Peter's Basilica, setting in motion a 4-year event which would see the Church open her doors to the world in a process of “updating” (in Italian: "aggiornamento") for the contemporary age.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope John XXIII opened Vatican II by delivering his famous 'Gaudet Mater Ecclesiae' speech, in which he indicated the main purpose of the Council.

The Second Vatican Council marked a milestone in Church history, setting off a process of deep transformation within the Church itself, and in its relations with the modern world, other Christian Churches and non-Christian religions. The process is still ongoing.

The 21st Ecumenical Council in Church history

Vatican II was the 21st ecumenical council to be convened in the Church's bimillennial history, and gathered nearly a century after Pope Pius IX convoked Vatican I (1869-70) which defined the dogmas of papal infallibility and the primacy of papal jurisdiction.

Pope St. John XXIII announced the convocation on 25 January 1959 only three months after his election to the Petrine ministry in October 1958, as he addressed the cardinals gathered in the in Benedictine Monastery of St. Paul in Rome.

Mass on 60th anniversary of Second Vatican Council

Pope at Mass: 'Learn from Vatican II how to see the Church'
11 October 2022, 17:45

In his homily during Mass on the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis says Jesus’ words to St Peter – “Do you love Me? Feed My sheep” – are also addressed to the Church today.
By Christopher Wells

“Do you love Me? Feed My sheep.” These words of Jesus, originally spoken to St Peter, are “also addressed to us, to us as Church,” said Pope Francis in his homily at Mass celebrated on Tuesday, marking the sixtieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican – Vatican II.

In fact, the Pope said, the Council was “one great response” to the Lord’s question, “Do you love Me?”

“To rekindle her love for the Lord,” he said, “the Church, for the first time in her history, devoted a Council to examining herself and reflecting on her nature and mission.”

These reforms were met with intense resistance by certain factions of the church who argued that the church was watering down and abandoning the essentials, including the breakaway traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), which remain separated from Rome to this day.

Others defended the reforms as necessary adjustments in a rapidly changing world, but condemned certain interpretations of the reforms as being too lax and verging on Protestantism, and therefore unfaithful to the true reforming spirit of so-called Vatican II.

Many of these divisions still exist to this day, particularly surrounding the liturgy and Pope Francis’s decision last year to restrict access to the Traditional Latin Mass.

Pope Francis recalled the opening speech of the council given by Pope John XXIII, whose remains were displayed to the side of the main altar during Mass, and repeated his predecessor’s declaration of Gaudet Mater Ecclesia, or, “Mother Church rejoices.”

“May the Church be overcome with joy,” he said, saying, “If she should fail to rejoice, she would deny her very self, for she would forget the love that begot her.”

“Yet how many of us are unable to live the faith with joy, without grumbling and criticizing? A Church in love with Jesus has no time for quarrels, gossip and disputes,” he said, asking God to “free us from being critical and intolerant, harsh and angry,” saying this “is not a matter of style but of love.”

12 October 1962: John XXIII's appeal to States to heed "anguished cry for peace"
12 October 2022, 07:58

On 12 October 1962, day two of the Second Vatican Council and amid the unfolding Cuban Missile Crisis, Pope John XXIII addresses diplomats accredited to the Holy See, noting that Heads of State bear responsibility for the fate of nations and urging them to listen to “the anguished cry” for peace which rises from every part of the world.
By Linda Bordoni

The scores of cardinals, bishops, members of delegations, and experts who flocked to Rome in October 1962 to attend the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council were living an international political crisis that in many ways was dramatically similar to the one we live in today.

Tensions were rising in the so-called Cuban missile crisis, which originated from the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. 15 October is the date on which the US took a picture of the missile installations in Cuba confirming that the Soviets were building missile bases on the island. Pope John XXIII had already undertaken his extraordinary mediation action by starting a dialogue with the non-Catholic population of the Soviet bloc, and on the second day of the Second Ecumenical Council, he addressed representatives of Heads of States – the ambassadors accredited to the Holy See – and told them that “We, and all the heads of state who bear responsibility for the fate of nations,” must omit no effort to achieve peace.

Pope Francis says ‘traditionalism’ is ‘infidelity’ to the Catholic Church and Vatican II
Michael Haynes
Wed Oct 12, 2022 - 12:14 pm EDT

VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) – Marking the 60th anniversary of the start of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis attacked “traditionalism” as being “evidence … of infidelity” to the Catholic Church.

The Argentinian Pontiff made his remarks in his homily during a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on October 10, marking the 60th anniversary of the opening of the ecumenical Second Vatican Council.

Using a passage from St. John’s Gospel – “Do you love me? Feed my sheep” – Francis launched his attack on the traditionalist movement.

Stating that “we are always tempted to start from ourselves rather than from God, to put our own agendas before the Gospel,” he decried those who wished to “retrace our steps.”

“Yet let us be careful,” he said, “both the ‘progressivism’ that lines up behind the world and the ‘traditionalism’ – or ‘looking backwards’ – that longs for a bygone world are not evidence of love, but of infidelity.”

Francis styled both “traditionalism” and “progressivism” as “forms of a Pelagian selfishness that puts our own tastes and plans above the love that pleases God, the simple, humble and faithful love that Jesus asked of Peter.”

Praising the Council for its actions, Francis stated that it “rediscovered the living river of Tradition without remaining mired in traditions.”

He told the assembled congregation not to be concerned with being “on the climb” towards heaven, or with attempts to “shepherd yourselves.” Rather, Francis urged a rejection of everything in the service of fraternity.

How often, in the wake of the Council, did Christians prefer to choose sides in the Church, not realizing that they were breaking their Mother’s heart! How many times did they prefer to cheer on their own party rather than being servants of all? To be progressive or conservative rather than being brothers and sisters? To be on the “right” or “left,” rather than with Jesus?

Pope at Audience: Desire is the compass to discern our direction
12 October 2022, 09:15

Pope Francis dedicates his catechesis on discernment to the weekly General Audience to the theme of desire, and encourages the faithful to ask the Lord to help us know His desire for our lives.
By Benedict Mayaki, SJ

During his Catechesis at the Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis continued reflecting on discernment, focusing on its indispensable “ingredient”: desire.

He said that “discernment is a form of searching, and searching, always stems from something we lack, but somehow know.”

Pope: encounter and prayer can change the world
14 October 2022, 11:24

Meeting with members of the Francophone Catholic Communities in the World, Pope Francis emphasizes the value of remaining united in prayer and in going forth to bring the message of the Gospel to the world.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis on Friday met with members of the Francophone Catholic Communities in the World, who are gathered in Rome for an experience of pastoral formation where they are reflecting on the ongoing synodal process. The group consists of French speakers living in foreign countries who “seek to share fraternity in order to live the joy of the Gospel.”

These pastoral days, the Pope said, “are a sign of communion" with the communities in which they live, with the Church in France, and with the Pope and the universal Church.

Pope on World Food Day: In a world at war put fraternity first
14 October 2022, 14:26

Pope Francis joins World Food Day 2022 with a letter to the Director of FAO in which he points out that hunger needs to be eradicated bearing in mind that people are not numbers and he calls for humanity and solidarity in international relations.
By Linda Bordoni

“Leave no one behind” is the theme of World Food Day, marked on 16 October 2022.

A theme, Pope Francis pointed out in a message to the Director of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that poses many challenges, in particular today, as “unfortunately, we are also living in a context of war, which we could call a 'third world war'.”

He recalled that the observance takes place as the UN agency marks 77 years since it was established to respond to the needs of so many people oppressed by destitution and hunger in the context of the Second World War.

Vatican II is back in the news, which begs a question: What was Vatican I?
By Carl Bunderson
Denver Newsroom, Oct 15, 2022 / 10:00 am

The First Vatican Council, held in 1869 and 1870 and left unfinished due to the capture of Rome, is regarded as the forerunner of Vatican II and is best known for its definition of papal infallibility.

The historian Father Philip Hughes wrote of Vatican I as “the most striking evidence … as to the Church’s essential independence of all but the grace of her divine Founder and her divine Guide.”

Vatican I’s context was the upheaval of the French Revolution, as the product of the enlightenment, and the subsequent liberalism of the 19th century. It was called by Blessed Pius IX.

The council produced two documents: Dei Filius, a dogmatic constitution on the Catholic faith, and Pastor aeternus, a first dogmatic constitution on the Church of Christ.

Vatican II complemented the First Vatican Council’s teaching by treating more fully of the College of Bishops, the nature of the episcopacy, and episcopal collegiality.
