Pope at Audience: A good disciple is vigilant
14 December 2022, 09:10

Pope Francis comes to “the final phase of catechesis on discernment” at the weekly General Audience, focusing his reflections on the importance of vigilance.
By Christopher Wells

Over the course of the past few weeks, Pope Francis’ weekly catechesis has focused on different aspects of discernment, from prayer, self-knowledge, desire, and the “book of life”; to desolation and consolation, the matter of discernment; and, most recently, the confirmation that accompanies the choices made.

At Wednesday's General Audience, Pope Francis began the “final phase of this journey of catechesis,” reflecting on the attitude of vigilance, an attitude essential to ensuring that the work of discernment is not in vain.

There is a genuine risk, the Pope explained, that the Evil One could “ruin everything,” leaving us even worse than we were to start with.

“This is why it is indispensable to be vigilant. Therefore, today it seemed appropriate to emphasize this attitude, which we all need for the discernment process to succeed.”

Cardinal Zen appeals conviction in Hong Kong court
By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, Dec 14, 2022 / 07:47 am

Cardinal Joseph Zen has filed an appeal with Hong Kong’s High Court following his conviction last month for failing to register a fund that helped pay for the legal fees and medical treatments of Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters.

The Hong Kong Free Press reported on Dec. 14 that the 90-year-old cardinal and former bishop of Hong Kong filed an appeal of the verdict this week together with four other trustees of the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund who were fined about $500 (HK$4,000) each.

Zen’s trial from September to November focused on whether it was necessary for the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund trustees to apply for local society registration between 2019 and 2021.

BREAKING: Jesuit superior says that Fr. Marko Rupnik was excommunicated in 2019
By CNA Staff
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Dec 14, 2022 / 14:46 pm

The Jesuit Superior General, Father Arturo Sosa, has confirmed that Jesuit artist Father Marko Rupnik incurred an automatic excommunication in 2019 for absolving a woman he had sex with, a fact his religious order was aware of but did not disclose until now.

According to a report by the Associated Press, Sosa disclosed this new information Wednesday in a briefing with journalists in Rome.

Abusing the sacrament of confession in this manner is one of the most serious crimes in the Catholic Church.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith “said it happened, there was absolution of an accomplice,” Sosa said. “So he was excommunicated. How do you lift an excommunication? The person has to recognize it and has to repent, which he did.”

Sosa also contradicted the Jesuits’ earlier statement and said the restrictions on Rupnik’s ministry, which remain in effect, dated from this earlier conviction, and not the 2021 allegations that the Vatican’s sex crimes office decided to shelve because they were deemed too old to prosecute, the AP reported.

Pope Francis exhorts young people put themselves on the line
15 December 2022, 12:20

In his prepared remarks to the young members of Italian Catholic Action, Pope Francis reiterates the importance of “teaming up” in a world that tends to isolate and divide people.
By Edoardo Giribaldi

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Mt 28:19). Pope Francis introduced his prepared remarks to the young members of Catholic Action recalling Jesus' exhortation "to every Christian in every age."

The Pope expressed his gratitude to the National President of Italian Catholic Action, Giuseppe Notarstefano; the Assistant General, Bishop Gualtiero Sigismondi; and the Catholic Action leaders and the educators, all working for younger generations' "human and Christian growth."

Pope Francis focused on the verb used by Jesus: "Go!" A crucial indication, capable of "transforming the disciple into an apostle," making him a missionary. "And you too, dear friends, are called to go, because God doesn't like it when we stay lazy on the couch."

Pope Francis tells new ambassadors to be peacemakers
15 December 2022, 12:37

Welcoming a group of newly-appointed Ambassadors to the Holy See, Pope Francis reminds them of their responsibility to contribute to the common good of the entire human family.
By Linda Bordoni

Acknowledging the variety of ways in which single nations contribute “to the common good not only of their citizens but of our entire human family,” Pope Francis on Thursday told newly accredited diplomats to the Holy See their role can help shine a light into the darkest corners of the world.

He was addressing the new Ambassadors of Belize, Bahamas, Thailand, Norway, Mongolia, Niger, Uganda and Sudan as they begin their mandates to liaise with the Vatican.

“Especially in these days marked by the continued problems associated with the global health crisis and by the entrenched violent conflicts around the world, the concerted action of the whole family of nations and the work of diplomacy are required more than ever.”

Russia says Vatican apologized for Pope Francis’ remarks about ‘cruel’ minority fighters in America magazine interview
Cindy Wooden - Catholic News Service
December 15, 2022

VATICAN CITY (CNS)—The Vatican has had diplomatic contact with Russia regarding comments Pope Francis made about Russian minorities being responsible for the worst acts of cruelty in the country’s war on Ukraine.

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry, told reporters Dec. 15 that the Vatican had apologized and so Russia considered the matter closed, the Russian news agency Tass reported.

“We received a letter through diplomatic channels from the Vatican, which contains an official statement on behalf of Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin in connection with the pontiff’s aforementioned statement,” Zakharova said, according to Tass.

The Vatican letter “says, in particular, the following: ‘The Vatican Secretariat of State apologizes to the Russian side. The Holy See has the utmost respect for all peoples of Russia, their dignity, faith and culture, as well as for other countries and peoples of the world,’” Tass reported Zakharova as saying.

Matteo Bruni, director of the Vatican press office, told reporters, “I can confirm there have been diplomatic contacts in that respect.” He did not add other details.

Pope Francis gives Greek Orthodox archbishop fragments of Parthenon sculptures from Vatican Museums
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Dec 16, 2022 / 05:15 am

Pope Francis has decided to give the Greek Orthodox archbishop of Athens three fragments of Parthenon sculptures that have been kept in the Vatican Museums for centuries.

The Vatican announced on Dec. 16 that the pope wants to gift the artifacts to His Beatitude Ieronymos II, the Orthodox archbishop of Athens and All Greece, “as a concrete sign of a sincere desire to continue on the ecumenical journey of witness to the truth.”

The Parthenon is a temple built atop the Acropolis in Athens to honor the Greek goddess Athena in the mid-fifth century B.C.

According to the Vatican Museums website, three marble fragments from the Parthenon’s decorative sculptures arrived in the Vatican’s collection in the 19th century. The fragments include part of the head of a horse from a sculpture of Athena’s chariot, as well as the heads of sculptures of two men.

Cardinal Cantalamessa: Mary places Jesus in our arms at Christmas
16 December 2022, 11:00

Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa delivers his third Advent Sermon to Pope Francis and the Roman Curia, and encourages us to welcome God’s love in Jesus into our lives during this Christmas Season.
By Devin Watkins

The Preacher of the Papal Household brought his series of Advent Sermons to a close on Friday, offering the Pope and the Roman Curia a reflection on “The Gate of Charity”.

Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap., began his sermon by noting that the ancient pagans—as expressed by Aristotle—understood God to be active and effective only to the extent that he (or they, in their view) received the love of human beings.

The New Testament, said the Cardinal, completely reversed this to make our ability to love dependent on God’s own love, as expressed in His Son, Jesus Christ.

“In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as expiation for our sins... We love because He first loved us” (1 Jn 4:12.19).

Registration opens for online Synod course on synodality
16 December 2022, 12:08

The General Secretariat for the Synod teams up with Sophia University Institute to offer a multilingual online course to explore the theme of synodality.
By Devin Watkins

As the Synod on synodality continues through the Continental Stage, registration has opened up for an online course to be held in Spring 2023 focused on the ongoing Church-wide event.

In a press statement released on Friday, the General Secretariat for the Synod said the 4-stage course would be offered in Italian, with simultaneous translation in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Theoretical and practical scope

The synodality course seeks to offer a “wide-ranging theological and pastoral preparation with the objective of providing the Christian community with a model for the communal exercise of Christian thinking and acting.”

According to the press release, the course will consist of four stages, including 3 academic modules and a residential meeting.

“They will deal with topics related to the synodal process: what is synodality? Is it in line with what is expressed in the Magisterium of the Church and Canon Law? How is it possible to live it in the Church?”

Open to all

Registration closes on 15 January 2023, and can be found at the website of Sophia University Institute.

Based in the central Italian town of Loppiano, the Focolare-run university is hosting the course through its Evangelii Gaudium Centre.

Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod, will offer the first introductory lecture on 17 January.

In keeping with his constant care for others, Pope Francis has chosen to celebrate his 86th birthday on Saturday by honoring three people who “live charity on behalf of the poorest of the poor.”

The Pope offers Fr. Hanna Jallouf, Gian Piero (known as Wué), and Silvano Pedrollo an expression of his gratitude for their charitable efforts for others.

According to a press release from the Dicastery for the Service of Charity, the gesture seeks to recall that “each of us is called” to give ourselves in service to others.

On Saturday, Pope Francis visits a dormitory in Rome run by the Missionaries of Charity to present his “flower of gratitude” to the three men.

Pope to artists: music is a path to peace
17 December 2022, 13:14

Pope Francis thanks the artists who will perform on Saturday evening in the annual Christmas Concert in the Vatican, saying their talents are a gift but also a responsibility. The proceeds of the music performance, which this year is dedicated to the theme of peace, will go to two humanitarian projects planned by the Salesians in war-torn Ukraine.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis on Saturday received in audience the artists who will perform tonight in the 2022 Christmas Concert in the Vatican.

The Christmas Concert in the Vatican

The event has been organized every year since 1993 for charitable purposes bringing together internationally renowned music artists. The proceeds of the show this year will go to support two humanitarian projects planned by the Salesians of the Don Bosco Missions in the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Lviv.

In his greeting remarks addressed to some 120 people,  Pope Francis thanked the organizers for choosing to dedicate this 30th edition to the theme of peace, under the motto "Our Emergency is Peace".

“Peace – he said – embraces the deepest yearnings of the human heart, so it is right that we should devote the best of our material, intellectual and spiritual energies in its service”.

In new interview, Pope asks for 'peace in the world' for Christmas
17 December 2022, 14:24

In this preview of an interview Pope Francis has given to the Spanish daily ABC, the Pope responds to a variety of questions regarding what he would like for Christmas, memories of his homeland of Argentina, and his wish to be close to the people even though his institutional role can make that difficult. The full interview will be published on Sunday, 18 December.
By Julián Quirós, ABC Editor, and Javier Martínez-Brocal, ABC Vatican correspondent

Pope Francis has given wide-ranging interview to the Spanish daily ABC that will be published in full on Sunday, 18 December. The newspaper's editor, Julian Quiros, and their Vatican correspondent, Javier Martinez Brocal, carried out the interview, and shared with Vatican News excerpts of their conversation.

In response to one of the first questions, the Pope acknowledged that sometimes his words are taken out of context, also as a way for those asking him questions to go were they want to with the discussion and answers, but that is the reality.

Some of the questions asked included the following, which we share along with excerpts from the Pope's answers....

Church to beatify Polish family killed for helping Jews in WW2
17 December 2022, 15:43

Pope Francis has approved the publication of numerous decrees regarding causes of canonization, including the recognition of the martyrdom Józef and Wiktoria Ulma and their children, who were killed by the Nazis for trying to save Jews during the Second World War; of layman Franz de Castro Holzwarth’s “offering his life” for others during a prison riot; and of the heroic virtues of Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci.
By Paolo Ondarza

During an audience on Saturday with the prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of Decrees concerning ten servants of God who will soon be beatified, and fourteen holy men and women recognized as Servants of God, who will now be known as “Venerable”.

A whole family of blessed

Among the new blesseds is an entire Polish family, Józef and Wiktoria Ulma and their seven children, who were killed by the Nazis in 1944 for sheltering eight Jews.

After Hitler's decision to implement the heinous "final solution," the Ulma family, aware of the risk to themselves and despite their financial straits, and moved by the commandment of love and the example of the Good Samaritan, hid a Jewish family for a year and a half before they were betrayed to the police. After killing the Jews they found, the agents of the Nazi regime executed the family sheltering them as a warning to others. The children shared in the operative faith of their parents, while the unborn child in Wiktoria’s womb received a baptism of blood.

BREAKING: Vatican dismisses Father Frank Pavone from priesthood
By Shannon Mullen, Joe Bukuras
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Dec 17, 2022 / 17:05 pm

Father Frank Pavone, a well-known pro-life activist and national director of the organization Priests for Life, has been dismissed from the clerical state for “blasphemous communications on social media” and “persistent disobedience of the lawful instructions of his diocesan bishop,” CNA has learned.

In a Dec. 13 letter to U.S. bishops obtained by CNA and confirmed by multiple sources as authentic, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, wrote that the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy issued the decision on Nov. 9, adding that there was “no possibility of appeal.”

“Father Pavone was given ample opportunity to defend himself in the canonical proceedings, and he was also given multiple opportunities to submit himself to the authority of his diocesan bishop,” explains a separate statement attached to Pierre’s letter. “It was determined that Father Pavone had no reasonable justification for his actions.”

Pavone, however, told CNA Saturday that he had not been notified about the Vatican's judgment.

Pope: 'My resignation letter is ready in case of health problems'
18 December 2022, 12:40

In an interview with the Spanish daily ABC, Pope Francis reveals that at the beginning of his pontificate he gave the then-Secretary of State, Cardinal Bertone, a letter declaring he would step down in the event of serious and permanent health impediments that made it impossible for him to exercise his role as Bishop of Rome and pastor of the universal Church.
By Salvatore Cernuzio

At the beginning of his pontificate in 2013 when Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone was still Secretary of State, Pope Francis handed in a resignation letter "in case of impediment due to health reasons." Revealing this decision, which Pope Paul VI had also taken during his time, Pope Francis spoke about this matter in a wide-ranging interview granted to the Spanish daily ABC. The full interview appeared on Sunday with previews posted a day earlier.

The Pope met with the newspaper's editor, Julián Quirós, and its Vatican correspondent, Javier Martínez-Brocal, when he addressed numerous topics on current events regarding the life of the Church and the world.

The conversations touched on the war in Ukraine, where the Pope said he does not see "a short-term end to it since it is a world war," the cases of abuse by clergy, the role of women in the Roman Curia (where he says "within two years a woman will head a Dicastery"), Benedict XVI's 2013 resignation, and his own possible resignation.

Pope at Angelus: ‘God can turn a crisis into a new horizon’
18 December 2022, 12:08

At the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis reflects on how St. Joseph welcomed the Messiah as God’s gift, and recalls that God can take the most difficult moments of our lives and turn them into opportunities for new beginnings.

Pope Francis prayed the noon-day Angelus with pilgrims in a sunny St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, reflecting on the day’s Gospel (Mt 1:18-24).

Focusing his remarks on the example of St. Joseph, the Pope noted that the man who would become Jesus’ foster father probably began his betrothal to Mary with good, simple dreams for his new life and family, such as an “affectionate wife, many wonderful children, and a dignified job.”

However, his discovery that Mary was expecting a child that was not his must have created “shock, pain, confusion, perhaps even irritation and disappointment.”

Pope Francis prays for children suffering in Ukraine
18 December 2022, 12:18

Pope Francis urges everyone to remember and pray for the children of Ukraine, as he meets with young people assisted by the Vatican’s “Santa Marta” Pediatric Dispensary.
By Devin Watkins

As Christmas approaches next Sunday, Pope Francis recalled the many children of Ukraine who will be unable to celebrate the birth of Christ in peace and security.

Meeting with children assisted by the Vatican’s “Santa Marta” Pediatric Dispensary on Sunday, as well as their parents and volunteer staff, the Pope urged everyone to pray for peace in Ukraine.

“We must not forget the children of Ukraine,” he said. “So many children are suffering from war, and in other parts of the world they also suffer from injustice.”

He pointed to a Ukrainian flag in the Paul VI Hall, where the audience took place, and noted the word “peace” written on it.

“If the Lord gives us this joy to celebrate Christmas like this, all together, in peace, let us also think of those who suffer and let us pray together for them.”

Frank Pavone cancels Mass but vows legal action after Vatican dismisses him from priesthood

The national director of Priests for Life, Frank Pavone, canceled a scheduled livestreamed Mass today, one day after CNA published a report that he was continuing to celebrate Mass after the Vatican had removed him from the priesthood.

In a defiant statement addressed to Church leaders and posted on his organization’s website Saturday, Pavone vowed to continue his ministry despite his dismissal from the clerical state.

“It’s about the millions of supporters of the movement I help to lead and will continue to lead,” he wrote, adding that he would respond by taking “all appropriate canonical and civil action as well as public communications to the Faithful.”

Pope pays tribute to late Cardinal Poletto's service to the Church
19 December 2022, 15:51

Pope Francis pays tribute to the life and ministry of the late Cardinal Severino Poletto, Archbishop-emeritus of Turin, Italy, who died on Saturday at the age of 89 and whose funeral will take place on 22 December at Turin's Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.
By Vatican News staff reporter

Recalling the late Cardinal Severino Poletto as a "faithful servant" of the Gospel and the Church, Pope Francis expressed his closeness to the local Church in Turin, Italy, in a telegram sent to the city's Archbishop Roberto Repole.

Cardinal Poletto, Archbishop-emeritus of Turin, died on Saturday at the age of 89.

He headed the Archdiocese of the Piedmontese capital from 1999 to 2010. He will be buried in the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin of the Consolata, following the funeral on 22 December in the metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Baptist.
