Pope to South Sudan's clergy: We need courageous souls ready to die for Africa
04 February 2023, 09:10

While addressing clergy in Juba for his long-awaited ecumenical pilgrimage in South Sudan, Pope Francis insists we need courageous, generous souls ready to die and suffer for Africa.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

We need courageous, generous souls ready to suffer and die for Africa.

Pope Francis stressed this when speaking to bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated persons, seminarians and lay pastoral workers, of South Sudan, in the Cathedral of Saint Therese in the African nation's capital of Juba, on Saturday morning.

This encounter marks the first event of the Pope's second day in the country, before meeting with his Jesuit confreres, internally displaced peoples, and participating in an ecumenical prayer gathering, later on in the day. The Pope will celebrate Mass for the nation's faithful on Sunday morning.

The Holy Father is in South Sudan as a "pilgrim of peace," where he is embarking upon a three-day ecumenical pilgrimage for peace, with the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

The visit to the country marks the second leg of his two-nation, 40th, Apostolic Journey abroad, and his fifth Journey to Africa.

Pope Francis visited the DRC from 31 January to 3 February, following in the footsteps of Pope St. John Paul II, who visited there in 1980 and 1985.

Pope to displaced South Sudanese: be seeds of hope and rebirth
04 February 2023, 15:32

Pope Francis meets South Sudanese internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Juba with Archbishop Justin Welby and Rev. Iain Greenshields, and reiterates his heartfelt appeal to end all conflict in South Sudan so as to bring a better future for its people.
By Lisa Zengarini

“The future of South Sudan cannot lie in refugee camps.”

Meeting on Saturday with a group of South Sudanese internally displaced persons (IDPs), along with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and Scottish Presbyterian Moderator Rev. Dr Iain Greeshields, Pope Francis renewed his “forceful and heartfelt” appeal to end all conflict in South Sudan, and to resume the peace process “in a serious way”, so that “violence can end and people can return to living in dignity”.

“Only with peace, stability and justice can there be development and social reintegration”, he said.

The meeting took place on Saturday afternoon at the “Freedom Hall” in Juba, on the second day of the three Christian leaders’ Ecumenical Pilgrimage for Peace aimed at restarting the young country’s stalled peace process and at drawing international attention to continued fighting and a worsening humanitarian crisis.

Pope at Ecumenical Prayer in South Sudan: Those who unleash war betray God
04 February 2023, 18:28

Pope Francis addressed the faithful gathered for an ecumenical prayer service in South Sudan, and urges all those present to pray, to work and to journey.
By Francesca Merlo

In Juba's John Garang Mausoleum, concluding his second day in South Sudan, Pope Francis addressed the faithful gathered for an ecumenical prayer. He noted that from the South Sudanese land, "wracked by violence", "many prayers have now been raised to heaven".
Pope Francis asked all those present to reflect on three verbs:

South Sudan’s President pardons 71 prison inmates
04 February 2023, 12:37

Sudan’s President Salva Kiir pardons 71 inmates who were serving different sentences. The act of clemency comes during Pope Francis’ pilgrimage of peace to the east African nation.
By Linda Bordoni

In a decree read on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, the nation’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardit pardoned 36 inmates on death row and 35 inmates who failed to pay compensations or fines.

He reportedly ordered prison authorities to execute the order accordingly.

No reasons were given by the Head of State for the pardon, but the act of clemency comes following his meeting earlier in the day with Pope Francis, the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland Rev Iain Greenshields, at the start of their Ecumenical Pilgrimage of Peace that takes place from 3 to 5 February.

Papal request for clemency

In December, in the run-up to Christmas, Pope Francis sent a letter to the world’s heads of state asking them to pardon prisoners.

In his invitation to make a “gesture of clemency” he invited world leaders to grant leniency to “those of our brothers and sisters deprived of their liberty whom they deem fit to benefit from such a measure, so that this time marked by tensions, injustices, and conflicts may be opened to the grace that comes from the Lord.”

Pope at Mass in South Sudan: Jesus knows and loves you
05 February 2023, 08:36

With the reassurance that Jesus knows and loves each of us personally, Pope Francis calls on the faithful of South Sudan to be "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world" during his Mass for vast crowds in Juba.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"Jesus knows your anguish and the hope you bear in your hearts, the joys and struggles that mark your lives, the darkness that assails you and the faith that, like a song in the night, you raise to heaven.  Jesus knows you and loves you.  If we remain in him, we must never fear, because for us too, every cross will turn into a resurrection, every sadness into hope, and every lament into dancing."

Pope Francis offered these comforting words during his Mass for South Sudan's faithful in the nation's capital of Juba on Sunday morning, his final day in the country, and of his Apostolic Journey.

Addressing the vast crowds enthusiastically gathered in the "John Garang” Mausoleum, the Holy Father's homily began by expressing his joy to be in South Sudan, and his desire to bring to the country's faithful Jesus' hope and closeness.

“You are in my heart, you are in our hearts, you are in the hearts of Christians around the world! Never lose hope. And lose no opportunity to build peace.”

Those words of encouragement were the final public comments which Pope Francis spoke on South Sudanese soil at the end of his 40th Apostolic Journey abroad.

The papal plane departed from Juba’s International Airport at 11:56 AM local time, carrying the Pope and over 70 journalists for the return trip to Rome.

The Pope is scheduled to arrive in Rome at around 5:15 PM local time.

On the return flight from South Sudan, Pope Francis is joined by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Moderator of the Church of Scotland for a press conference. The Pope reflects on the instrumentalization of Benedict XVI’s death and the reiterates that criminalizing homosexual people is an injustice.
By Vatican News

"The whole world is at war and self-destruction, we must stop in time!"

Pope Francis made the remark in his press conference aboard the papal plane on the return flight to Rome from South Sudan. He spoke to reporters alongside the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and Rt. Rev. Iain Greenshields, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

The three jointly answered questions put to them by journalists covering the Apostolic Journey to DR Congo and South Sudan.

Pope Francis reiterated the "injustice" of the criminalization of homosexual people, and addressed polemics surrounding the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who died on 31 January 2022. The Pope said his death was “instrumentalized” by people “who took political sides rather than that of the Church.”

He also explained that his predecessor, whom he consulted several times in recent years, "was not bitter about my actions.”

At the outset of the press conference, Pope Francis reiterated the ecumenical nature of the visit to South Sudan. “I wanted the two of them to be in the press conference,” he said, “especially the Archbishop of Canterbury, who has a years-long history along the path toward reconciliation” in South Sudan.

Here follows a working English transcription and translation of the press conference (Archbishop Welby and Rt. Rev. Greenshields spoke in English, while Pope Francis spoke in Italian):

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, shares his thoughts at the end of the ecumenical pilgrimage with Pope Francis to South Sudan, and says Christians have grown accustomed to living apart, but it is rather the norm for the Church to work as one.
By Andrea Tornielli

"We need constantly to be reminded, and I hope this trip reminds people that the normal is for the Church to work as one."

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, shared that consideration with Vatican News while still aboard the return flight to Rome from Juba.

Following a joint press conference, Archbishop Welby granted the following interview about the ecumenical pilgrimage of peace which he carried out with Pope Francis and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Rt. Rev. Iain Greenshields.

Pope grieving for victims of quakes in Turkey and Syria
06 February 2023, 13:57

Pope Francis is saddened by the huge loss of life caused by earthquakes in Turkey and in Syria. His words of closeness and assurances of prayers came in telegrams sent to the apostolic nuncios of the countries.
By Linda Bordoni and Nathan Morley

Pope Francis says he is deeply saddened to learn of the huge loss of life caused by a powerful earthquake that has struck south-eastern Turkey and north-western Syria.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked wide swaths of the neighbouring countries early Monday morning toppling hundreds of buildings and killing thousands of people.

Hundreds are still believed to be trapped under the rubble and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers search mounts of wreckage in cities and towns across the area.

In two separate telegrams signed on his behalf by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope offered words of condolence and asked the apostolic nuncios, Marek Solczynski in Turkey, and Mario Zenari in Syria, to send his assurance of his spiritual closeness to all those affected.

The Pope entrusted “those who died to the loving mercy of the Almighty” and sent his “heartfelt condolences to those who mourn their loss.”

Likewise, he said he “prays that the emergency personnel will be sustained in their care of the injured and in the ongoing relief efforts by the divine gifts of fortitude and perseverance.”

The Pope also expressed a “renewed sign of his spiritual solidarity” for the “long-suffering Syrian people.”

Ukrainian Greek Catholics to celebrate Christmas on December 25
07 February 2023, 17:18

The Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has decided to move away from the Julian Calendar which will involve changing the dates of several fixed liturgical feasts. For the time being, however, Greek Catholics will continue to celebrate Easter on a later date according to the old calendar.

As from this year, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) will be celebrating Christmas on the 25 December, and not on January 7, and the Epiphany on 6 January instead of the 19th.

The switch of dates is part of a major change decided last week by the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, moving away from the Julian Calendar which is presently used almost exclusively by the Russian Orthodox Church and other Eastern Churches under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Moscow.

The governing body of the UGCC meeting in Lviv-Bryukhovychi on February 1–2, decided that the changeover will take effect on September 1, but allowed for parishes to transition gradually with permission from their respective bishops.

90 per cent of Ukrainian Greek Catholics in favour of the reform

The decision was officially announced in a live broadcast of “Live TV” on Monday, 6 February, by the head of the UGCC, Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, who explained that it was adopted after a vast consultation, involving clergy, religious and Church leaders, which indicated a shift of opinion in favour of the change.

Until the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February, 2022, Ukrainian Greek Catholics, including those of the diaspora, were divided on the issue. Instead, said Archbishop Shevchuk, the survey showed that now more than 90% of Ukrainian Greek Catholics are supporting the move from the Julian calendar, which many Ukrainians associate with the Russian occupiers.

Synod on Synodality: Europe’s Continental Assembly in Prague discusses tensions in the Church
By Courtney Mares
Prague, Czech Republic, Feb 7, 2023 / 15:55 pm

Two hundred delegates — including 65 women and 46 bishops — are meeting this week in the capital of the Czech Republic for the last stage of regional discussions in the Synod on Synodality.

On Tuesday, the second day of discussion, participants were asked to identify “substantial tensions,” questions, and issues that should be addressed by the Synod of Bishops at the Vatican in October.

The delegates broke up into small discussion groups based on language, nation, and vocation and then presented their conclusions in front of the entire assembly.

One of the French-speaking groups brought up the tension of the role of women in the Church in light of the changing role of women in society as a whole and “in relation to the messages of justice that we want to proclaim outside the Church.”

A young woman said that her German-language group discussed the importance of youth involvement and “the inclusion of all people who are on the fringes of Church,” offering up the example of how a group of young people carrying a rainbow flag at the World Youth Day in Panama were insulted on the street.

The moderator urged presenters to be as transparent as possible about tensions that emerged in group discussions. Time was also allowed for individuals to come up and address the assembly at the end.

Pope: Human trafficking 'disfigures dignity'
08 February 2023, 13:30

Pope Francis decries human trafficking's 'disfiguring' of human dignity, in a video message released for the 9th World Day of Prayer and Reflection against Human Trafficking, marked in the Catholic Church on the feast of St. Josephine Bakhita.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis has launched an appeal to combat "the shameful scourge" of human trafficking, decrying that it "disfigures dignity."

The Pope's cry came in a video message for the ninth World Day of Prayer and Reflection against Human Trafficking, released Wednesday, 8 February, the feast of St Josephine Bakhita.

The Catholic Church’s annual observance was first introduced by Pope Francis in 2015 when he invited women and men religious of the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) and the Union of Superiors General (USG) to mark the day on the liturgical memorial of St. Josephine Bakhita, patron saint for victims of human trafficking.

The United Nations separately marks its own World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July.

Pope Francis says sport is a metaphor for life
09 February 2023, 13:00

Pope Francis greets members of an Amateur sports association and urges them to follow three rules, both in sports and in life.
By Francesca Merlo

Addressing members of an Amateur Sports Association (Associazione Dilettantistica Sportiva) in the Vatican on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Vatican Football League, Pope Francis noted that since the first football match in the Belvedere Courtyard in 1521 in the presence of Pope Leo X, the Association now includes other sports disciplines.

The Holy Father told those present that when they travel for championships they are "called upon to bear witness to your bond with the Holy See". He explained that healthy athleticism is an activity that can contribute to the maturation of the spirit, and outlined three fundamental rules for an athlete.

Pope to Doctors: Don't be discouraged
09 February 2023, 13:10

Pope Francis encourages those providing healthcare ministry for the Diocese of Rome to never be discouraged, to continue serving Jesus present in the faces of all they assist, and tells the sick, that the Lord is always close to the fragile.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Meeting physicians and the sick ahead of the upcoming World Day of the Sick, Pope Francis told the doctors to never be discouraged, for it is the face of Jesus, in those they serve, and that the Lord is closest to those in fragility.

The Holy Father offered these comforting reminders as he addressed representatives of the medical area of the Health Pastoral Office of the Diocese of Rome on Thursday in the Vatican.

The annual World Day is marked on 11 February, it was introduced by Pope St. John Paul II as a way for believers to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses.

Thanking all those committed to healthcare ministry, the Pope recalled the meeting takes place in the context of the World Day of the Sick, which this year, in the context of the synodal journey, has as its theme the Gospel motto 'Take care of him' from the Gospel according to St. Luke.

Cardinal Angelo Becciu

Pope Francis meets with Cardinal Becciu amid ongoing Vatican finance trial
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome Newsroom, Feb 9, 2023 / 08:48 am

Pope Francis met at the Vatican Thursday morning with Cardinal Angelo Becciu, who is on trial for charges related to Vatican finances.

The meeting appeared on the top of Pope Francis’ list of official audiences for Feb. 9, published by the Vatican every day at noon Rome time.

The editors of the news aggregation website Il Sismografo called the official nature of the meeting “puzzling” given that the pope and the cardinal have been in contact other times since Becciu’s fall from grace in 2020.

Becciu served as “sostituto,” or second-ranking official at the Secretariat of State, from 2011 to 2018, when Pope Francis named him a cardinal and made him head of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

Since July 2021, Becciu has been on trial in the Vatican on several finance-related charges. The trial centers on the Secretariat of State’s purchase of a London building, a controversial investment that lost the Vatican hundreds of thousands of euros. It also marks the first time a cardinal has been tried by a Vatican court of lay judges.

The 74-year-old cardinal has also been accused of using Vatican funds to help a charity run by his brother, an allegation that made waves when it was published in a major Italian newspaper in September 2020.
