02 March 2023, 16:00

In his prayer intention for March 2023, Pope Francis prays for victims of abuse, and says the Church must serve as a model of safeguarding and must offer safe spaces for victims.
By Vatican News staff

“In response to cases of abuse, especially those committed by members of the Church, it is not enough to ask for forgiveness,” says Pope Francis in his video-message announcing his prayer intention for March 2023.

The Pope this month is praying in a special way for victims of abuse.

Pope tells media to ‘globalise’ solidarity not indifference
04 March 2023, 12:50

Receiving in audience the staff of a Catholic Italian TV programme, Pope Francis expresses gratitude for its continuing commitment to spread the Gospel message and encourages it to continue shining the spotlight on stories and realities of the peripheries.
By Linda Bordoni

Congratulating those, who twenty-six years ago, chose the name for the Italian TV programme: In His Image (A Sua Immagine), Pope Francis told its editors and other staff never to stop communicating the message of dignity and sacredness of life inherent in every human being.

The programme, which is a joint Italian State TV and Italian Bishops Conference venture, provides religious content, socio-political features and a Catholic perspective on current events. It also provides TV coverage of Papal events including the weekly Angelus or Regina Coeli prayer and his apostolic visits.

Pope to young UK Catholics: ‘Dare to testify to Christian ideals’
04 March 2023, 14:00

Pope Francis sends a message to young Catholics gathered in London for the 2023 Flame Congress, and urges them to dare to be different as they walk in friendship with Christ.
By Devin Watkins

Tens of thousands of young Catholics from across England and Wales gathered at the OVO Arena Wembley, in London, for the 5th CYMFed Flame Congress on Saturday.

The event was held 150 days before the 37th World Youth Day—to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 1-6 August 2023—under the theme “Rise Up!”, an echo of the WYD Scripture passage: “Mary arose and went with haste”.

The Popes and the Lenten fast: A soul training excercise
03 March 2023, 17:34

The magisterial teaching of modern Popes provides answers to contemporary questions about the traditional penitential discipline of fasting during Lent.
By Amedeo Lomonaco

There are three key elements of the Lenten journey that begins each year with Ash Wednesday: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Fasting, in particular, should not be understood only in its formal dimension. It has real significance, as Pope Francis repeatedly reminds us, if one follows the example of the Good Samaritan. It has value if one adopts a sober lifestyle, if one lives “a way of life that does not waste, a way of life that does not ‘throw away’.”

What is the fasting the Lord desires?

Lent is a privileged time of fasting and penance. But what kind of fasting does God want from us? Pope Francis answered this question on 16 February 2018 during his morning meditation in the Chapel at the Domus Sanctae Marthae: it is not just a matter of making choices about food, but of a lifestyle where one has the humility and consistency to recognize and correct one’s sins.

Pope Francis explains that the answer comes from Scripture, where we read: “Bow down your head like a rush,” that is, “humble yourself,” and think about your sins. This, Pope Francis emphasizes, is “the fasting that the Lord desires: truth, consistency.”

In his homily during the Ash Wednesday Mass in the Basilica of Santa Sabina on 22 February 2023, the Pope recalls that “Fasting is not a quaint devotion, but a powerful gesture to remind ourselves what truly matters and what is merely ephemeral.”

Pope at Angelus: Christians must share the glorious light of God's love
05 March 2023, 12:08

At the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis explains how the Transfiguration of Jesus reveals the beauty and splendour of divine Love incarnate in Christ. He encourages us to recognize this luminous beauty of love, even when it bears the marks of the cross.
By Thaddeus Jones

Speaking to the faithful gathered in a sun-filled Saint Peter's Square for the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis gave his customary reflections before leading the recitation of the Marian prayer.

He recalled the day's Gospel of the Transfiguration when Jesus revealed the glorious light of God's majesty and beauty shining on His face and clothing.

The disciples Peter, James and John witnessed this spectacular moment when Jesus reveals to them "the beauty and splendour of divine Love incarnate in Christ," the "perfect image of the Father" and "a foretaste of paradise."

Pope to US seminarians: Listen to the Lord, walk together, offer witness
06 March 2023, 11:57

Welcoming a group from Saint Mary’s Seminary in Cleveland, Ohio (USA), Pope Francis encouraged them to deepen their listening to the Lord, walking together in communion, and giving witness to their faith, key elements that mark their seminary formation and the Church’s synodal journey.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis met with priests, deacons, seminarians and staff from Saint Mary’s Seminary in Cleveland, Ohio on Monday morning. The US group is celebrating the 175th anniversary of the seminary's founding.

After opening greetings by Cleveland's Bishop Edward Malesic, Pope Francis addressed the group by first giving thanks to God for the great number of priests formed by the seminary over almost two centuries. He noted how the seminary continues this mission today by educating and training deacons and lay ministers "to assist God’s holy people in living their call to be missionary disciples."

The Pope in his prepared text then highlighted how this mission of formation takes on "ever greater importance" as the Church continues in its synodal journey by underscoring three key elements: listening to the Lord, walking together, and giving witness.

Close friend, aide says Pope Francis has left pastoral imprint on the Church
By Elise Ann Allen
Mar 6, 2023

ROME – One of Pope Francis’s closest friends and aides has said that after ten years, the pontiff has left an indisputably Jesuit mark on the church and has propelled Catholicism into a more open conversation with the world, eliciting criticism but also distinguishing himself as a pastor and a global moral authority.

Speaking to Crux, fellow Jesuit Father Antonio Spadaro, Editor in Chief of the Jesuit-run periodical La Civiltà Cattolica, said he believes that as the tenth anniversary of Pope Francis’s election approaches, “it seems that a great parrhesia has developed in the church, which is exactly what the pope asked and is asking for.”

“Pope Francis is a popular figure, but I would say, beyond popular, he’s perhaps the only global moral figure that there is right now in the world,” Spadaro said, noting that the current Successor of Peter has a strong personality and clear pastoral approach that not everyone agrees with.

“Francis is a very strong and high-profile figure, he has a significant, ingenious personality, in his way, which can attract or push away,” he said, but insisted that, rather than concentrating on the specific personality of the man in office, “what counts is his message.”

Synod on Synodality: The continental assembly under the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar

Africa Synod Assembly: a ‘kairos’ for renewal of the Church
06 March 2023, 10:27

It wasn’t an easy day for delegates at the Synod's Continental Assembly for Africa when it came to the discernment of priority issues for the Church in Africa as the meeting drew to a close.
By Andrew Kaufa smm

The synodal way can be hard but is absolutely necessary. Sometimes difficult conversations arise among brothers and sisters. This was the experience of many when it came to the discernment of priority issues for the Church in Africa. As a matter of fact, the mood in the auditorium of De Leopol Hotel in Addis Ababa could as well be described as tense on Saturday afternoon when delegates reconvened to pass the draft Africa Synod document.

Family of God in Africa

Sr Esther Lukas Jose Maria had earlier warned the delegates saying, “At this point, we have to think not as me but as one Church family of God in Africa.”

“We have not yet reached the stage of what is to be done but listening to one another and to the Holy Spirit. This is what we shall offer as the Church in Africa. And priority means the most important thing, not everything. Since we have 15 groups, we want to get 15 priority areas which we shall reduce to five,” she continued.

Prioritising cross-cutting topics

However, as usual with spiritual discernment, picking few priorities out of fifteen proved a challenge. For the facilitating team of the Saturday afternoon session, it was a hustle to guide the assembly towards consensus on the eight cross-cutting topics.

After much listening, eventually, a synthesis of the contributions from the fifteen working groups highlighted the following priority areas for the Church in Africa:

New statutes issued for IOR in papal Chirograph
07 March 2023, 12:03

The Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR) receives new statutes that bring it in line with the new Apostolic Constitution 'Praedicate Evangelium.' The governing structure is simplified with new roles clearly defined for the various management offices to avoid duplication. New norms are issued regarding conflicts of interest. Management changes from a collegial body to one led by a single Director.
By Vatican News

The statutes guiding the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR) have been renewed, now four years since their last revision. The changes are intended to bring the statutues in line with the new Apostolic Constitution Praedicate Evangelium. They include five-year mandates with the possibility of renewal only once, and a simpler governing structure with roles more clearly defined among the various offices in order to avoid overlap or duplication of activities.

The changes came in the Chirograph of Pope Francis with the new statutes made public on Tuesday 7 March, marking a renewal of the IOR's service whose purpose is "to provide for the care and administration of movable and immovable goods transfered or entrusted to it by individuals or legal persons and intended for religious or charitable works."

Update: Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253809/reopening-of-notre-dame-cathedral-confirmed-for-late-2024
Notre Dame cathedral to open in December 2024
By Solène Tadié
Paris, France, Mar 7, 2023 / 14:00 pm

Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, whose spire and roof were destroyed by an April 15, 2019, fire, is expected be rebuilt within the five-year deadline set by the French government.

As confirmed by the head of the construction site, French Army Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin, in an interview with the Associated Press, the faithful and tourists should have access to the site again by the end of 2024.

Reconstruction work only began some 24 months after the tragic incident occurred, with the first phase consisting of cleaning and securing the site, involving more than 200 different companies.

Although the beloved cathedral will not be ready for the Olympic Games to be held in the French capital in July and August 2024, it should have regained its former shape by then, with the reconstruction phase of its emblematic spire to begin in April.

Before the end of the year, therefore, it should reappear in the Parisian sky as it was originally designed by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-duc in the 19th century, contrary to the initial wish of French President Emmanuel Macron, who had called for a “contemporary architectural gesture” in the restoration of the spire.

Pope Francis continues his catechesis on apostolic zeal at the weekly General Audience, and recalls that each baptised person plays our own unique role in the Church's mission, regardless of our position in the Church or level of instruction in the faith.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Every baptised person plays our own unique role in the Church's mission.

Pope Francis stressed this during his Wednesday General Audience in the Vatican, as he continued his series of catecheses on apostolic zeal, this week considering the ecclesial aspect of evangelization.

The proclamation of the Gospel, the Holy Father stressed, is not the task of isolated individuals, but a communal service to the Church’s apostolic faith, which "must be passed down in its integrity to every generation."

Zeal for spreading the Gospel, he said, is inseparable from this ecclesial dimension, which, he explained, protects the Christian message from distortion and from accommodating to worldly interests and ways of thinking.

The Vatican II Decree on the Church’s Missionary Activity, the Pope recalled, presents all evangelization as having its source God Our Father's immense love, which was poured out on the world through the missions of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and prolonged in the Church’s mission of proclaiming this saving love to all the ends of the earth.

10 years of Pope Francis: Significantly more women working at the Vatican
08 March 2023, 10:18

In the past ten years, the number of women employed at the Vatican has risen significantly to 1,165. Never before has the number of female employees and their share of the total staff been higher, according to a Vatican News survey of the relevant Vatican authorities. The number of women in Vatican leadership positions has also grown under Francis.
By Gudrun Sailer

There are currently 1,165 female employees working for the Pope, compared to only 846 in the year Francis took office in 2013. The percentage of women in the total workforce at the Vatican rose in the current pontificate from just under 19.2 to 23.4 per cent today. These figures refer to the two administrative units Holy See and Vatican City State together.

The increase in female employees is even more pronounced if one looks exclusively at the Holy See, i.e. the Roman Curia. Here, the proportion of women has risen from 19.3 to 26.1 per cent over the past ten years. This means that more than one in four employees at the Holy See is now a woman - in absolute figures 812 out of 3,114.

Looking back after a decade, Top 5 Papal Controversies
By Elise Ann Allen
Mar 8, 2023

ROME – With ten years at the helm of the Catholic Church under his belt, Pope Francis has become a globally beloved and respected figure, but he has also generated more than his fair share of controversy – much of which, thanks to social media, has played out visibly in real time.

After an initial “honeymoon phase” following Francis’s election, which he himself predicted wouldn’t last long, slowly a cascade of criticism began to flow in when started his serious decision-making, and it became clear there was a major shift in tone from the previous two pontificates.

As the tenth anniversary of his election approaches, here’s a look at what are arguably the most controversial decisions he has made so far.

Political Advocacy

Francis’s clear decision to get involved in what are conventionally seen as political debates, from economics to migration policy – and, of course, which side he’s taken – has been a source of debate nearly from the beginning.

Early on, this debate focused on his advocacy for the poor and his routine criticism of the capitalist system and “trickle-down” economics, gaining him a reputation among some as a Marxist. His criticism of free-market economics has also led to increased pushback, especially among right-wing American Catholics; famously, conservative American radio media personality accused Francis of espousing “pure Marxism” in 2013.

These allegations were further cemented when the pope received a crucifix shaped like a hammer and sickle, the traditional communist symbol, from Bolivian President Evo Morales during a 2015 visit to South America, and when a few months later he met with Fidel Castro during a brief stopover in Cuba in September of that year.

Yet Francis has consistently denied these accusations, arguing that he is merely promoting the social doctrine of the Catholic Church.

Pope: inclusion is the path towards a better future
09 March 2023, 10:28

Pope Francis addresses participants of the "Cattedra dell'accoglienza" (“The Chair of Welcome”) conference sponsored by the “Fraterna Domus” association and encourages their efforts in promoting a culture of inclusion and welcome in order to build a better future for all.
By Sophie Peeters

The "Cattedra dell'accoglienza" (the Chair of Welcome) is a gathering promoted by the “Fraterna Domus” association from 6 to 10 March in the town of Sacrofano, some 30 Km north of Rome.

The training course brings together teachers and academics from different cultural and religious backgrounds to provide formation on how to offer hospitality to those in need.

In his address to participants, Pope Francis recognized the association’s commitment to teaching how to welcome everyone, making it not a formula initiative, but rather a daily experience.

Pope Francis: Jerusalem holds universal spiritual value
09 March 2023, 11:24

Pope Francis greets participants in an interreligious dialogue group between the Holy See and Palestine, and recalls the universal value of Jerusalem for the three major monotheistic religions.

The Holy See hosted a meeting in Rome this week of the Joint Working Group for Dialogue between the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue and the Palestinian Commission for Interreligious Dialogue.

Pope Francis encouraged the efforts of this working group, as he met with participants on Thursday in the Vatican.

In his greetings, the Pope recalled the late Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, who started the group with Sheikh Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Religious Affairs Advisor to the President of the State of Palestine.

Pope: Indifference is a sign of a desperate and mediocre society
09 March 2023, 12:21

Pope Francis addresses members of an association working for victims of accidents in the workplace and urges them to learn to recognise the various forms of disabilities, as well as the various struggles each worker faces.
By Francesca Merlo

On Thursday morning, Pope Francis met with representatives of INAIL, Italy’s Insurance Association for Industrial Accidents.

In his address, Pope Francis thanked them for their commitment to building a society in which nobody is left behind.

The Holy Father began by noting that often, unjustly, the burden of an accident is “placed on the shoulders of the family.”

The situation worsened with the arrival of the pandemic, noted the Pope, and in this regard he expressed his gratitude to the association “for the extra care you have put in place at the height of the health crisis, especially towards the most fragile categories of the population.”

“The last few months have also seen an increase in the number of female accident cases, reminding us that the full protection of women in the workplace has not yet been achieved,” added the Pope.

St. Peter's Basilica to hold monthly Eucharistic adoration on portico
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Mar 9, 2023 / 11:00 am

St. Peter’s Basilica will now host an hour of Eucharistic adoration on its front portico once a month.

Beginning March 14, adoration will take place every second Tuesday from 8-9 p.m. on the parvise in front of the Vatican basilica leading to St. Peter’s Square.

The holy hour, according to a press release, is part of the pastoral initiatives of the basilica.

The March 14 adoration will be led by Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, OFM Conv., who is the archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica. The prayer will be offered for Pope Francis in light of his 10th anniversary as pope.

St. Peter’s Basilica is typically open every day from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the winter or 7 p.m. in the summer.

The Eucharist is also exposed in St. Peter’s Basilica for adoration in the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament from approximately 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Vatican takes climate activists to trial for damage to base of famous statue in Vatican Museums
By Hannah Brockhaus
Rome Newsroom, Mar 9, 2023 / 08:11 am

The Vatican held a hearing Thursday to try three climate activists for criminal damage to a famous statue in the Vatican Museums.

Guido Viero, 61, and Ester Goffi, 26, were ordered to appear before the Vatican City State’s tribunal on March 9.

Viero and Goffi superglued their hands to the marble base holding Laocoön and His Sons, an ancient marble sculpture on display in the Vatican Museums, on the morning of Aug. 18, 2022.

They are accused of damaging the base of the statue through the use of “particularly tough and corrosive synthetic adhesive.”
