Pope Francis appears on a weekly religious programme of the RAI, Italy’s public broadcaster, which was recorded on 27 May and broadcast a week later. The Pope offered his thoughts on world challenges and social issues, encouraging all to pray and find strength in their faith.

Pope Francis became the guest star of Italy’s television programme on faith and religion called “A Sua immagine” ('In His image'), a weekly broadcast by RAI, the nation’s public broadcaster.  The Pope dialogued on a host of issues and social challenges, especially the world situation.

In speaking about the quest for world peace, he said, "It's a story as old as humanity: with peace you always come out ahead, maybe a little but you gain, whereas with war you lose everything. Everything! And so-called gains are losses."  The Pope recalled Pius XII's appeal in his 1939 radio message to leaders of the world when, on the eve of World War II, he said, "Nothing is lost with peace. All can be lost with war."

Pope Francis makes this warning his own, recalling the conflict in Ukraine that wounds Europe but also all the wars and violence that mark the world. He decried the glamorizing of violence, especially torture, which we are seeing in wars and even the media, whereas it is a terrible reality that must be stopped.

To make the word “fraternity” resound, worldwide, from St Peter's Square.

This, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti explained on Monday morning during a press conference held in the Holy See Press Office, is the objective of 'Not Alone', the World Meeting on Human Fraternity that will be held in the Vatican on the 10th June, and in which Pope Francis will also take part.

Inspired by the Pope’s encyclical letter Fratelli tutti, the event will bring together artists, young people, and Nobel peace prize winners from across the world.
 
The Pope's role

Pope Francis will be in St. Peter's Square at 6 p.m., and will greet those present, as well as those joining via videolink from all around the world.

He will listen to what emerged from the morning's working groups, and meet with Muhammad Yunus and Nadia Murad, representatives of the group of Nobel winners. They will present the Pontiff with a document on fraternity and together they will launch a campaign to collect one billion signatures on it.

The only official liturgical celebration published today is the Mass for the Solemnity of the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, on 29 June at 9:30 a.m., in St. Peter's Basilica.

Traditionally, the Solemnity's Holy Mass in the Basilica is celebrated in the presence of Bishops and Cardinals as well as a delegation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, who travel to Rome for the traditional exchange of delegations on the feast days of their respective patron saints.

The Holy See Press Office on Tuesday, 6 June, released Pope Francis' schedule for the 2023 World Youth Day, to take place from 1 to 6 August 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal. 

Over 400,000 young people have registered to take part in the event on 1-6 August 2023.

In a video message released earlier this month, the Holy Father said that the desire of these young people to travel to the Portuguese capital later this year fills him with joy. Pope Francis has presided over four World Youth Days, having previously done so in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2013; Krakow, Poland, in 2016; and Panama City, Panama, in 2019. 

World Youth Day in Lisbon will be the 37th, and was originally scheduled to take place in the Portuguese capital in 2022, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For this year's WYD's motto, Pope Francis has chosen a passage from Luke's Gospel: "Mary arose and went with haste" (Lk 1:39), which opens the account of the Visitation, when Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth following the angel’s announcement to the Blessed Mother that she would be the mother of the Son of God.

The annual report on the activities of the Institute for Works of Religion ("Istituto per le Opere di Religione" or IOR) – which, as provided for by recent regulations issued by Pope Francis, is “exclusively” responsible for the role of “asset manager and custodian of the movable patrimony of the Holy See and the Institutions connected with the Holy See” – was published on Tuesday, 6 June 2023.

A statement accompanying the release of the report indicates that net income was 29.6 million euro (compared to 18.1 million euro the previous year); the net interest margin was + 3.7 percent; the net commission margin amounted to + 20.9 percent; and the Moneyval rating ranks the IOR among “the best-ranked institutions in the world.”

“For the eleventh consecutive year,” the statement reads, “the Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR) publishes its Annual Report containing its 2022 Financial Statements prepared in accordance with IAS-IFRS international accounting standards.”

Let us imitate the 'Little Way' of St. Therese, by doing even the littlest of things, like the Lord did, with great love.

With this sentiment, Pope Francis described St. Therese of Lisieux, patroness of the missions, at his weekly General Audience on Wednesday in St. Peter's Square, as he continued his catechesis series on saints who personified apostolic zeal.

Recalling the beloved saint was born 150 years ago, on 2 January 1873, the Pope expressed his plan to dedicate an Apostolic Letter to her on the anniversary.

"She is patroness of the missions, but she was never sent on mission," the Pope said, as he challenged the conventional notion of what constitutes being a missionary.

At the end of the General Audience on Wednesday morning Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s A. Gemelli University Hospital where he will undergo surgery in the early afternoon.

A statement released by the Holy See Press Office said the Holy Father “will undergo a laparotomy and abdominal wall surgery under general anaesthesia.”

“The surgery, decided upon over the past few days by the medical team assisting the Holy Father, became necessary due to an incisional laparocele (hernia) that is causing recurrent, painful and worsening sub-occlusive syndromes,” the statement said.

The Press Office added that the Pope will remain in the hospital for several days “to allow for a normal post-operative course and full functional recovery."
The Pope’s admission to the hospital follows a visit and consultation with doctors at the same facility on Tuesday afternoon.

Doctor Sergio Alfieri, the surgeon who operated on Pope Francis at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, told journalists the operation went ahead without complications and the Pope is expected to make a full recovery within the usual timeframe for such an intervention.

He confirmed that the programmed surgical procedure to remove an incisional laparocele (hernia) caused by scarring from old surgeries was not an emergency operation.

On Thursday afternoon, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, wrote:

"His Holiness Pope Francis spent a day resting.

The medical staff following the Pontiff's post-operative course reports that he has been fed a liquid diet. His haemodynamic (blood pressure) and respiratory parameters are stable. The post-operative course appears regular.

This afternoon, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, he received the Eucharist.

Doctors say Pope Francis is recovering well, starting to use an armchair, and read newspapers.

Friday afternoon, the Holy See Press Office expressed this in an update regarding Pope Francis' recovery following his surgery on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Director of the Press Office, Matteo Bruni, said: "The medical team reports that the clinical picture is progressively improving and the post-operative course is regular."

"After breakfast, His Holiness began to move about, spending most of the morning in an armchair. This allowed him to read the newspapers and start work again."

In a message to accredited journalists on Friday morning, via Telegram, on Friday morning, the Press Office said the Pope had another good night. The Press Office Director said the Pope rested well.

Saturday's late afternoon "World Meeting on Human Fraternity" in St. Peter's Square has been a great desire of Pope Francis, and much anticipated. The Meeting will begin at 4 pm Rome time and is open to anyone wishing to participate. In the morning, there will be opportunities to discuss the theme of human fraternity, with the event bringing together some 30 Nobel Peace Laureates, together with young people and humanitarian associations, in order to understand what kind of world is possible when the we focus on the importance of human fraternity, as expressed in Pope Francis' encyclical Fratelli tutti.

Representatives of some 76 organizations will be on hand, including representatives of the Christian Workers Movement, the Secular Franciscan Order, and members of Italy's agricultural association, Coldiretti, in addition to the Cooperativa Auxilium medical assistance and outreach organization. The World Meeting on Human Fraternity, with the title "Not Alone", aims to relaunch Pope Francis' dream of fraternity and also offer a way to express the closeness and prayers of all for the Pope, who was originally expected to be present at the event, but is currently in hospital.

Pope Francis rested well during his third night at the Gemelli Polyclinic, as he continues to recover from his 7 June operation of laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with prosthesis.

The Holy See Press Office announced the news on Saturday morning, explaining that further information will be provided later in the day.

On Friday evening, the Holy See Press Office released a note from the medical staff following the Pope's convalescence saying that Pope Francis' post-operative course continues to follow a normal course.

The World Meeting on Human Fraternity opens with working groups centred on Nobel Prizes, the Environment, Schools, the Weak, and Associations. Speaking on the sidelines of this event, Cardinal Pietro Parolin says Pope Francis is well and has already expressed his desire to resume work.

“You come together today as a sign of hope for the world,” said Cardinal Pietro Parolin at the opening the “Not Alone” World Meeting on Human Fraternity. “Your being here together already represents a sign of hope. In fact, you have chosen to bring together the wealth of differences and experiences, of which each one is a bearer, to bear witness to what unites our humanity and allows us to recognise ourselves as brothers and sisters, as the Holy Father Francis teaches with his Magisterium.”

Addressing some thirty Nobel Laureates and other world leaders, Cardinal Parolin continued, “Operating in a spirit of fraternity is a responsibility that cannot be shirked by those who are called to animate the culture of international relations.

“Many of you, through choices and gestures made in areas of conflict, demonstrate by the example of your lives that in the interruption of dialogue, relations degenerate and that the fraternity that unites is stronger than the pain that divides. Many of you can testify how weaving the patient web of dialogue is laborious, often tortuous and not infrequently unfulfilling, but it is what is most noble for the good of the human community, both locally and internationally.”

PARIS — The authors of two articles published in the progressive French Catholic daily La Croix have drawn attention to how Pope Francis’ restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass have fueled a growth in support for the ancient liturgy among young Catholics, producing the opposite effect to what was intended and posing a dilemma for bishops and for Rome.

In a June 4 article headlined “Young Trads: ‘Bishops Must Seek a New Balance,’” French Catholic historian Christophe Dickès recalled a video, made soon after Pope Francis imposed sweeping restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass with his July 2021 motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, in which a group of young French Catholics made clear their love for the old form of the Mass was not ideological.

They were not “grumpy, old fashioned, and even less, separatist,” Dickès observed, but were instead attached to the traditional rite because of its “transcendence, its verticality, and its orientation towards the East.” There was no desire to dissent, he said, but rather they addressed the Pope, saying: “We are your sheep.”
