Pope at Angelus: The Sign of the Cross makes us feel God's embrace
04 June 2023, 12:06

The sign of the cross reminds us how much God loves us and makes us feel God's constant embrace, Pope Francis reassured during his midday Angelus address Sunday on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, as he urged faithful to ask themselves whether they witness God-as-love in their lives and communities.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

The sign of the cross reminds us how much God loves us, Pope Francis underscored during his Angelus address Sunday at noon on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. Addressing the thousands of faithful in St. Peter's Square, before reciting the midday prayer, the Pope said that the simple gesture, that we learn as children, makes us feel God's embrace, that, with His Love and tenderness, envelops us completely.

New interview: Pope Francis appears on a weekly religious programme of the RAI, Italy’s public broadcaster

Pope Francis discusses faith, world issues on Italian TV
04 June 2023, 14:26

Pope Francis appears on a weekly religious programme of the RAI, Italy’s public broadcaster, which was recorded on 27 May and broadcast a week later. The Pope offered his thoughts on world challenges and social issues, encouraging all to pray and find strength in their faith.
By Salvatore Cernuzio and staff reporter

Pope Francis became the guest star of Italy’s television programme on faith and religion called “A Sua immagine” ('In His image'), a weekly broadcast by RAI, the nation’s public broadcaster.  The Pope dialogued on a host of issues and social challenges, especially the world situation.

In speaking about the quest for world peace, he said, "It's a story as old as humanity: with peace you always come out ahead, maybe a little but you gain, whereas with war you lose everything. Everything! And so-called gains are losses."  The Pope recalled Pius XII's appeal in his 1939 radio message to leaders of the world when, on the eve of World War II, he said, "Nothing is lost with peace. All can be lost with war."

Pope Francis makes this warning his own, recalling the conflict in Ukraine that wounds Europe but also all the wars and violence that mark the world. He decried the glamorizing of violence, especially torture, which we are seeing in wars and even the media, whereas it is a terrible reality that must be stopped.

Pope: We have responsibility before God to protect Common Home
05 June 2023, 11:20

Pope Francis says that we have a responsibility before God to protect the earth, under constant attack from devastating effects of climate change, which requires a concrete response by all, as he addressed organizers of and participants in the Green&Blue Festival, coinciding with World Environment Day.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

The catastrophic effects of climate change hold us accountable before God.

Pope Francis stressed this on Monday in the Vatican as he addressed participants in and organizers of the Green&Blue Festival, coinciding with World Environment Day, today, 5 June 2023, as he appealed for recognizing our shared responsibility to take concrete action to protect the planet.

With events scheduled today in Rome, and from 6 - 8 June in Milan, the festival brings together Italian and international players who are united in their commitment to urgently combat climate change.

During the audience, the Pope encouraged them in their commitment to protect the environment. He also drew attention to the ever-more violent natural disasters devastating the globe, as he urged the International Community, and all people of good will, to do their part in safeguarding our Common Home.

“Experts clearly point out how the choices and actions put in place this decade will have an impact for thousands of years. Our knowledge about the impact of our actions on our Common Home and those who inhabit it, and will inhabit, it has expanded.”

Addressing representatives of the Foundation in the Vatican, he encouraged them to continue to “think and act in terms of community,” making space for others and working for “a future where everyone can find their place and have their space in the world.”

Thirty Nobel winners to gather in St Peter’s Square for Human Fraternity event
05 June 2023, 16:54

The World Meeting on Human Fraternity, to be held in St Peter’s Square on the 10th June, will bring together artists, young people, charity workers, and Nobel peace prize winners from across the world.
By Tiziana Campisi

To make the word “fraternity” resound, worldwide, from St Peter's Square.

This, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti explained on Monday morning during a press conference held in the Holy See Press Office, is the objective of 'Not Alone', the World Meeting on Human Fraternity that will be held in the Vatican on the 10th June, and in which Pope Francis will also take part.

Inspired by the Pope’s encyclical letter Fratelli tutti, the event will bring together artists, young people, and Nobel peace prize winners from across the world.

The Pope's role

Pope Francis will be in St. Peter's Square at 6 p.m., and will greet those present, as well as those joining via videolink from all around the world.

He will listen to what emerged from the morning's working groups, and meet with Muhammad Yunus and Nadia Murad, representatives of the group of Nobel winners. They will present the Pontiff with a document on fraternity and together they will launch a campaign to collect one billion signatures on it.

Pope Francis pays brief visit to Gemelli hospital for evaluation
06 June 2023, 15:27

Pope Francis visits Gemelli hospital on Tuesday and returns to the Vatican before noon.
By Vatican News

The Pope returned to Gemelli University Policlinic on Tuesday – but this time, in contrast to his stay in the hospital two months ago, it was just for a quick checkup.

The Pope’s visit to Gemelli was confirmed by the director of the Holy See’s Press Office, Matteo Bruni, in response to questions from journalists after reports emerged this morning that the Pope had gone back to the hospital. Bruni’s statement explained that the Pope underwent some clinical examinations “and returned to the Vatican before noon.”

Pope Francis' itinerary for World Youth Day 2023
06 June 2023, 12:10

The Holy See Press Office releases the itinerary of Pope Francis' visit to Portugal from 2 to 6 August for the 37th World Youth Day.
By Francesca Merlo

The Holy See Press Office on Tuesday, 6 June, released Pope Francis' schedule for the 2023 World Youth Day, to take place from 1 to 6 August 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Over 400,000 young people have registered to take part in the event on 1-6 August 2023.

In a video message released earlier this month, the Holy Father said that the desire of these young people to travel to the Portuguese capital later this year fills him with joy. Pope Francis has presided over four World Youth Days, having previously done so in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2013; Krakow, Poland, in 2016; and Panama City, Panama, in 2019.

World Youth Day in Lisbon will be the 37th, and was originally scheduled to take place in the Portuguese capital in 2022, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For this year's WYD's motto, Pope Francis has chosen a passage from Luke's Gospel: "Mary arose and went with haste" (Lk 1:39), which opens the account of the Visitation, when Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth following the angel’s announcement to the Blessed Mother that she would be the mother of the Son of God.

IOR reports net income of 29.6 million euro in 2022
06 June 2023, 11:33

The Institute for Works of Religion ("Istituto per le Opere di Religione" or IOR) publishes its annual report, highlighting its commitment to comply with “the highest ethical and regulatory international standards” and noting that its Moneyval rating “puts the Institute as one of the best-ranked institutions in the world.”
By Vatican News

The annual report on the activities of the Institute for Works of Religion ("Istituto per le Opere di Religione" or IOR) – which, as provided for by recent regulations issued by Pope Francis, is “exclusively” responsible for the role of “asset manager and custodian of the movable patrimony of the Holy See and the Institutions connected with the Holy See” – was published on Tuesday, 6 June 2023.

A statement accompanying the release of the report indicates that net income was 29.6 million euro (compared to 18.1 million euro the previous year); the net interest margin was + 3.7 percent; the net commission margin amounted to + 20.9 percent; and the Moneyval rating ranks the IOR among “the best-ranked institutions in the world.”

Pope at Audience: Let's imitate Saint Therese's loving 'Little Way'
07 June 2023, 09:17

At his weekly General Audience, Pope Francis extols Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and her 'little way.' He praises the Doctor of the Church, who, despite illness and early death, illustrated how to do even the littlest of things with extraordinary love, and who now is "spending time in heaven doing good on earth.'
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Let us imitate the 'Little Way' of St. Therese, by doing even the littlest of things, like the Lord did, with great love.

With this sentiment, Pope Francis described St. Therese of Lisieux, patroness of the missions, at his weekly General Audience on Wednesday in St. Peter's Square, as he continued his catechesis series on saints who personified apostolic zeal.

Recalling the beloved saint was born 150 years ago, on 2 January 1873, the Pope expressed his plan to dedicate an Apostolic Letter to her on the anniversary.

"She is patroness of the missions, but she was never sent on mission," the Pope said, as he challenged the conventional notion of what constitutes being a missionary.

Pope admitted to hospital for abdominal surgery
07 June 2023, 10:39

Pope Francis is admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital where he will undergo abdominal surgery on Wednesday afternoon. He is expected to remain in hospital for some days to allow for full recovery.
By Vatican News

At the end of the General Audience on Wednesday morning Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s A. Gemelli University Hospital where he will undergo surgery in the early afternoon.

A statement released by the Holy See Press Office said the Holy Father “will undergo a laparotomy and abdominal wall surgery under general anaesthesia.”

“The surgery, decided upon over the past few days by the medical team assisting the Holy Father, became necessary due to an incisional laparocele (hernia) that is causing recurrent, painful and worsening sub-occlusive syndromes,” the statement said.

The Press Office added that the Pope will remain in the hospital for several days “to allow for a normal post-operative course and full functional recovery."
The Pope’s admission to the hospital follows a visit and consultation with doctors at the same facility on Tuesday afternoon.

Pope conscious, alert and ‘joking’ after surgery
07 June 2023, 20:19

The surgeon who operated on Pope Francis on Wednesday afternoon tells journalists the operation went ahead without complications and the Pope is alert and in good spirits.
By Linda Bordoni

“The Holy Father is well, he is awake, alert, and has already joked with me!”

Doctor Sergio Alfieri, the surgeon who operated on Pope Francis at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, told journalists the operation went ahead without complications and the Pope is expected to make a full recovery within the usual timeframe for such an intervention.

He confirmed that the programmed surgical procedure to remove an incisional laparocele (hernia) caused by scarring from old surgeries was not an emergency operation.

Parolin on #NotAlone: The world needs hope and fraternity
10 June 2023, 14:43

The World Meeting on Human Fraternity opens with working groups centred on Nobel Prizes, the Environment, Schools, the Weak, and Associations. Speaking on the sidelines of this event, Cardinal Pietro Parolin says Pope Francis is well and has already expressed his desire to resume work.
By Amedeo Lomonaco

“You come together today as a sign of hope for the world,” said Cardinal Pietro Parolin at the opening the “Not Alone” World Meeting on Human Fraternity. “Your being here together already represents a sign of hope. In fact, you have chosen to bring together the wealth of differences and experiences, of which each one is a bearer, to bear witness to what unites our humanity and allows us to recognise ourselves as brothers and sisters, as the Holy Father Francis teaches with his Magisterium.”

Addressing some thirty Nobel Laureates and other world leaders, Cardinal Parolin continued, “Operating in a spirit of fraternity is a responsibility that cannot be shirked by those who are called to animate the culture of international relations.

“Many of you, through choices and gestures made in areas of conflict, demonstrate by the example of your lives that in the interruption of dialogue, relations degenerate and that the fraternity that unites is stronger than the pain that divides. Many of you can testify how weaving the patient web of dialogue is laborious, often tortuous and not infrequently unfulfilling, but it is what is most noble for the good of the human community, both locally and internationally.”

Pope’s Restrictions Spark Resurgence of Interest in Traditional Mass Among Youth
Two French Catholic writers analyze how Traditionis Custodes is fueling a Traditional Mass movement among young Catholics
Edward Pentin June 9, 2023

PARIS — The authors of two articles published in the progressive French Catholic daily La Croix have drawn attention to how Pope Francis’ restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass have fueled a growth in support for the ancient liturgy among young Catholics, producing the opposite effect to what was intended and posing a dilemma for bishops and for Rome.

In a June 4 article headlined “Young Trads: ‘Bishops Must Seek a New Balance,’” French Catholic historian Christophe Dickès recalled a video, made soon after Pope Francis imposed sweeping restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass with his July 2021 motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, in which a group of young French Catholics made clear their love for the old form of the Mass was not ideological.

They were not “grumpy, old fashioned, and even less, separatist,” Dickès observed, but were instead attached to the traditional rite because of its “transcendence, its verticality, and its orientation towards the East.” There was no desire to dissent, he said, but rather they addressed the Pope, saying: “We are your sheep.”
