Pope Francis writing meditations for Good Friday Way of the Cross
26 March 2024, 14:50

This year, Pope Francis is writing his own Via Crucis' meditations for the Way of the Cross this Good Friday at Rome's iconic Colosseum, the Vatican announces.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Each year for the annual tradition of the Via Crucis, presided over by Pope Francis in Rome's Colosseum on the evening of Good Friday, different individuals are entrusted with writing the meditations.

However, this year, the Holy Father has decided to write them himself, the Holy See Press Office disclosed to journalists on Tuesday.

"In prayer with Jesus on the Way of the Cross" is the theme of the reflections that will accompany the fourteen stations at the Colosseum.

The traditional Way of the Cross celebration at Rome’s Colosseum will begin at 9:15 pm Friday evening.

How to obtain a plenary indulgence during Holy Week 2024[/
By CNA Staff
CNA Staff, Mar 23, 2024 / 05:00 am

A plenary indulgence is a grace granted by the Catholic Church through the merits of Jesus Christ to remove the temporal punishment due to sin.

The indulgence applies to sins already forgiven. A plenary indulgence cleanses the soul as if the person had just been baptized.

A plenary indulgence can be obtained during Holy Week for oneself or for a deceased person if one of the following works established by the Church is performed.

Holy Thursday — March 28, 2024

1. If during the solemn reservation of the Blessed Sacrament (typically on a side altar), which follows the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, you recite or sing the Eucharistic hymn “Tantum Ergo.”

2. If you adore the solemnly reserved Blessed Sacrament for a half hour.

Pope at Audience: Patience offers convincing witness to Christ's love
27 March 2024, 09:28

During his Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis calls on the faithful to imitate Christ's patience, saying this virtue offers one of the most convincing testimonies of the Lord's love.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Even if often it is not easy, when a Christian practices the difficult virtue of patience, they bear witness to Christ's love.

Pope Francis made this point during his weekly General Audience on Wednesday of Holy Week, which was originally scheduled to be held in St. Peter's Square but was moved to the Paul VI Hall at the last minute due to rain.

Acknowledging the change in location due to the weather, the Holy Father joked, "It is true that you will be rather crowded, but at least we will not get wet. Thank you for your patience."

Pope to Catholics in Holy Land: May hope arise from seeds sown in pain
27 March 2024, 12:02

In an Easter Letter addressed to Catholics in the Holy Land, Pope Francis expresses his spiritual closeness and paternal affection, and encourages Christians around the world to offer concrete support and prayers for peace.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis has written to Catholics in the Holy Land, assuring them that they are daily in his thoughts and prayers.

“I embrace all of you, in the variety of your rites, dear Catholic faithful living throughout the Holy Land,” he writes, adding, “In a particular way, I embrace those most affected by the senseless tragedy of war: the children robbed of their future, those who grieve and are in pain, and all who find themselves prey to anguish and dismay.”

In his letter, released on Wednesday, the Holy Father recognizes the special significance of Easter for those who live in the places sanctified by Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.

Pope at Chrism Mass: Dear priests, let sorrow sanctify you
28 March 2024, 10:21

During Chrism Mass in the Vatican on Holy Thursday, Pope Francis thanks priests for heroic witness, but urges them to transform shortcomings, errors, and hardened hearts into an opportunity to draw closer to Christ and start anew.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"Thank you, dear priests, for your open and docile hearts.  Thank you for all your hard work and your tears.  Thank you, because you bring the miracle of God’s mercy to our brothers and sisters in today’s world.  May the Lord console you, strengthen you and reward you."

Pope Francis gave this encouragement on Holy Thursday morning during the Chrism Mass in St. Peter's Basilica.

In his homily, the Pope reflected on how St. Peter, the first Pastor of our Church, lost sight of Christ and denied him three times. In remorse, the Pope recalled, Peter's eyes were flooded with tears that, "rising up from a wounded heart, liberated him from his false notions and his self-assurance."

"Those bitter tears," Pope Francis said, "changed his life."

"Dear brother priests, the healing of the heart of Peter, the healing of the Apostle, the healing of the pastor," the Pope said, "came about when, grief-stricken and repentant, he allowed himself to be forgiven by Jesus."  He noted that his healing took place amid tears and bitter weeping, which led to renewed love.

This Holy Thursday of the Year of Prayer, the Pope said he wished to share, with his fellow priests, thoughts on an aspect of the spiritual life that, he said, has been somewhat neglected, yet remains essential.  "Even the word I am going to use is somewhat old-fashioned, yet well worthy of reflecting on. That word is compunction."

Pope on Holy Thursday: 'The Lord never tires of forgiving'
28 March 2024, 18:06

At the Mass of the Lord's Supper at the women's section of Rebibbia prison in Rome, Pope Francis reminds us to never tire of asking the Lord for forgiveness and learning to serve as He did.
By Lisa Zengarini

Continuing his custom of celebrating the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in a prison, Pope Francis visited the female section of the Rebibbia correctional facility in Rome on Holy Thursday afternoon.

He presided over Mass and the ritual of the washing of the feet for dozens of inmates, guards, chaplains and officials gathered in an outdoor area of the prison.

In his brief off-the-cuff homily, the Pope focused on two episodes of Jesus’ Last Supper on the eve of His Passion.

Pope Francis: Jesus of Nazareth has shown us His face
28 March 2024, 11:59

In a message to the Church in Sonsonate, El Salvador, Pope Francis encourages the devotees of a famous image of Jesus of Nazareth to contemplate the face of God.
By Joseph Tulloch

Pope Francis has sent a message to the faithful of Sonsonate, El Salvador, who are celebrating the 420th anniversary of the arrival in the region of a famous image of Jesus of Nazareth.

The message, addressed to the local Bishop, Constantino Barrera, and all devotees of the image, thanks them "for having made me a part of the commemoration”, and for “allowing me to join in your celebration on this solemn day.”

The Apostolic Nuncio in El Salvador, Archbishop Luigi Roberto Cona, read the message from Pope Francis at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Sonsonate, where thousands of devotees had gathered to accompany the traditional procession of the image through the streets of the town.

US: Movie about Sister Cabrini makes a splash
28 March 2024, 14:35

A powerful and inspiring film about the life of Sister Frances Saverio Cabrini has been a great success in the U.S, including among atheists and those of other faiths.
By Fr. Paweł Rytel-Andrianik

A film about a religious sister, Francesca Cabrini, who embodied sensitivity to migrants, faith, and a "never give up" attitude, has reached fourth place in the US box office.

"Muslims, atheists, and Christians saw the film, and they all say one thing: that they want to be like Cabrini," says Executive Producer Eustace Wolfington.

The film was produced by Angel Studios, a company that also made the internationally successful series The Chosen about Jesus of Nazareth.

The film is directed by Alejandro Gómez Monteverde, who directed and co-wrote Sound of Freedom, one of the most successful movies in the US in 2023.

Cabrini opened in theaters in the U.S. on Women's Day, March 8, and will soon hit screens in Italy and many countries worldwide. Pope Francis had the opportunity to watch some scenes from the film, which tells, in a Holywood style, the story of Sister Frances Saverio Cabrini, who lived from 1850 to 1917.

How to obtain a plenary indulgence during Holy Week 2024

Good Friday — March 29, 2024

1. If you venerate the cross in the solemn celebration of the Lord’s Passion.

2. If you piously participate in the Stations of the Cross.

Holy Saturday — March 30, 2024

1. If two or more people pray the holy rosary.

2. If you attend the celebration of the Easter Vigil at night and renew your baptismal promises, which is part of the liturgy of that Mass.

Conditions in all cases

Pope Francis releases meditations ahead of Via Crucis at Colosseum
29 March 2024, 12:31

Pope Francis publishes his reflections for the Good Friday Stations of the Cross, saying that "with God, suffering never has the final word."
By Tiziana Campisi

Pope Francis’ meditations on the Via Crucis for this Good Friday are a dialogue with Jesus, a face-to-face conversation with Christ, made up of reflections, questions, introspections, confessions, and invocations.

The sufferings of Jesus on the path to Golgotha, the loving gaze of Mary, the women who offer their help, Simon the Cyrene and Joseph of Arimathea: all of these figures provoke an examination of conscience that then becomes prayer, with a final invocation that repeats the name of Jesus fourteen times.

Pope presides at Solemn Liturgy of Lord’s Passion on Good Friday
29 March 2024, 18:14

As Pope Francis presides at the Liturgy of the Lord's Passion on Good Friday, Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, the Preacher of the Pontifical Household, preaches on the passage “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I Am”.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis presided over the liturgy of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ in St. Peter’s Basilica on Good Friday afternoon. Good Friday is the only day of the year on which Holy Mass is not celebrated.

The Church celebrates the Solemn Liturgy of the Passion of the Lord, consisting of three parts: the Liturgy of the Word, culminating in the chanting of the Passion according to St. John; the Adoration of the Cross; and reception of Holy Communion.

After the proclamation of the Passion, Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, the Preacher of the Pontifical Household, delivered the homily, taking as his starting point the passage: “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I Am” (Jn 8:28).

Pope prays Way of the Cross from Casa Santa Marta
29 March 2024, 22:38

Pope Francis follows the Way of the Cross held at Rome’s Colosseum on Good Friday from his residence at the Casa Santa Marta, while still leading the faithful in reflecting on our Christian journey of prayer.
By Devin Watkins

“We now take this time to be with you. We want to spend it in closeness to you. On the way from Gethsemane to Calvary, you never stopped praying.”

Pope Francis introduced his reflections on the Good Friday Via Crucis with an invitation to reflect on the centrality of prayer in the Christian life, especially during the Year of Prayer leading up to the 2025 Jubilee.

According to the Holy See Press Office, the Pope chose not to attend the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum in person.

“To preserve his health for tomorrow's Vigil and the Holy Mass on Easter Sunday,” said the statement, “Pope Francis will follow the Way of the Cross at the Colosseum this evening from the Casa Santa Marta.”

Last year, too, Pope Francis was not present at the Colosseum. Cardinal Angelo de Donatis, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome, offered the final blessing, both in 2023 and this year.

In an apparent last-minute decision, Pope Francis skipped the Way of the Cross ceremony held at Rome's Colosseum on Friday to safeguard his health ahead of the upcoming liturgies on Saturday and Easter Sunday.

“To conserve his health in view of tomorrow's Vigil and the Holy Mass on Easter Sunday, Pope Francis will follow the Via Crucis at the Colosseum this evening from Casa Santa Marta,” a statement from the Holy See Press stated.

The news arrived just as the event was scheduled to begin, where two men were seen carrying away the papal chair, where Rome’s mayor Roberto Gualtierei was seen standing in the background. Earlier in the day, Pope Francis presided over the Good Friday Liturgy in Saint Peter’s Basilica.

Pope at Easter Vigil: ‘With Jesus no tomb will suppress the joy of life’
30 March 2024, 21:30

At the Vigil Mass in the Holy Night of Easter in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Francis invites us to “look up” to Jesus, the God of life, and reminds us that by welcoming Him no failure will doom us to despair.
By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis presided over the traditional Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter in Saint Peter's Basilica on Saturday evening. The celebration started at the entrance of the Basilica with the evocative rite of the blessing of fire followed by the candlelight procession while Lumen Christi was sung and the Basilica lights came on in all their brilliance. The celebration included the baptism and confirmation of eight catechumens from Italy (4), South Korea (2), Japan (1) and Albania (1).

Pope Francis celebrates Easter 2024: ‘Jesus Christ is risen’
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Mar 31, 2024 / 08:15 am

Pope Francis presided over Mass in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday 2024 before giving the traditional urbi et orbi blessing in the presence of approximately 60,000 people.

On a warm and windy Easter Sunday at the Vatican, Pope Francis proclaimed: “Jesus Christ is risen! He alone has the power to roll away the stones that block the path to life. He, the living One, is himself that path. He is the Way.”

“Only the risen Christ, by granting us the forgiveness of our sins, opens the way for a renewed world,” the pope added.

Speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in his urbi et orbi blessing, Pope Francis said that “today throughout the world there resounds the message proclaimed 2,000 years ago from Jerusalem: ‘Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, has been raised!’”

Pope Francis presides at Mass on Easter Sunday

Pope Francis presides at Mass During the Day on Easter Sunday in St. Peter's Square with tens of thousands of the faithful to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

As the Church celebrates the most holy day of the Christian calendar, Pope Francis presided at Mass on Easter Sunday in St. Peter's Square to mark the Lord's Resurrection.

On Easter Sunday, tens of thousands of faithful filled a spring-like St. Peter's Square.

The Pope presided over the Mass on the Solemnity of the Resurrection of the Lord, or, simply, Easter Sunday.

As per tradition dating back to 1985, the Vatican Square was decorated with flowers from the Netherlands.

Since the Pope had already delivered his Easter homily at the Easter Vigil Mass in St. Peter's Basilica the night before, the Holy Father did not deliver another homily, as is usually the case at this daytime Mass.

Pope at Regina Coeli: Lord's Resurrection brings immense joy, transforms our lives
01 April 2024, 11:53

On Easter Monday, Pope Francis prays the Regina Coeli prayer, and reassures the faithful in St Peter’s Square and following from elsewhere that with Christ's Resurrection, our lives have changed forever and completely, and we are to be His joyful witnesses.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"The Resurrection of Jesus is not just wonderful news or the happy ending of a story, but something that changes our lives completely and forever..."

Pope Francis offered this powerful reminder to the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square before reciting the Regina Coeli prayer on Easter Monday at noon.

The Holy Father drew inspiration from today's Gospel reading according to Saint Matthew that describes the women meeting Jesus at the empty tomb.

The joy born from the living encounter with the Risen One, the Pope said, is "a powerful emotion," which impelled them to spread the word, and tell what they had seen.

Pope Francis: I was ‘used’ against Ratzinger in 2005 conclave, but he was ‘my candidate’
By Jonathan Liedl

Pope Francis said he was “used” in the 2005 conclave in an effort to block the election of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, though he supported the candidacy of the man who soon became Pope Benedict XVI.

“He was my candidate,” Francis said of his predecessor in excerpts from the forthcoming book “The Successor,” published by the Spanish newspaper ABC on Easter Sunday.

In the book, Pope Francis told Spanish journalist Javier Martínez-Brocal that his name, then-Cardinal Jose Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, was put forward as part of a “complete maneuver” by an unnamed group of cardinals to manipulate the conclave’s outcome.

Cardinal Grech’s controversial comments add to list of concerns on postsynodal study groups
By Jonathan Liedl
National Catholic Register, Mar 29, 2024 / 07:00 am

If Cardinal Mario Grech held nearly any office other than the one he does, his recent comments in favor of the female diaconate and against the need for “uniformity of thought” in the universal Church might not be so significant.

After all, when prelates offer their theological opinions, it’s generally taken as just that — an individual Church leader’s theological opinion.

But Grech isn’t an ordinary prelate — he heads the Vatican’s Secretariat for the Synod. And just one week before his March 21 interview with an Italian-language Swiss publication, Pope Francis had tasked the Maltese cardinal with implementing 10 study groups to focus on themes raised at the 2023 Synod on Synodality assembly. Among them: the possibility of “women’s access to the diaconate” and “shared discernment of controversial doctrinal, pastoral, and ethical issues” in a way that pays “greater attention to the diversity of situations” in different parts of the world.
