Pope at Audience: The Psalms, 'the prayer of Jesus,' are for all seasons
19 June 2024, 09:50

During his Wednesday General Audience, Pope Francis encourages the faithful to engage in a 'symphony of prayer' by praying the Psalms, as Jesus did.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"It is necessary to make the Psalms our prayer, making them ours and praying with them," urged Pope Francis during his Wednesday General Audience in the Vatican.

As the Holy Father continued his catechesis series on the Holy Spirit, this week he reflected in a special way on the Psalms.

The Pope had begun by recalling that in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee, he had proclaimed 2024 a Year of Prayer.

Holy See organizes meeting focusing on the abolition of surrogacy
19 June 2024, 14:17

The Under-Secretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, moderates a meeting on surrogacy at the United Nations in Geneva focusing on the need for international planning to protect women and children from all forms of exploitation.
Vatican News

Surrogacy represents "a serious violation of the dignity and rights of women and children", and the international community "must therefore feel called upon to reflect on the urgency of placing an absolute ban on all forms of surrogacy," as Pope Francis called for in his speech to the Diplomatic Corps in January this year. In fact, consensus around "a strongly negative view of surrogacy" is emerging globally, "even from different political, ethical and religious positions". These are the conclusions proposed by Gabriella Gambino, Under-Secretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, who moderated the dicussions during the event on 18 June at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The one day meeting had the title "At what price? Towards the abolition of surrogacy: preventing the exploitation and commodification of women and children", and was organised by the Permanent Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in Geneva and the "Caritas in Veritate" Foundation.

Pope highlights ‘signs of hope’ in encounter with Lutherans
20 June 2024, 11:18

Speaking with a delegation from the Lutheran World Federation, Pope Francis points to the joint commemoration of the anniversary of Nicea and to the Joint Declaration on justification as ‘signs of hope’ on our common ecumenical journey.
By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis welcomed a delegation of leaders from the Lutheran World Federation to the Vatican on Thursday, describing their visit as “an important gesture of ecumenical fraternity.”

Recalling an earlier meeting with Lutherans, in 2021, Pope Francis highlighted the upcoming anniversary of the First Council of Nicea as “an ecumenical event.” The Nicene Creed “is an ecumenical bond that has its centre in Christ”, the Pope said, quoting the Common Word issued by LWF General Secretary, Reverend Doctor Anne Burghardt (who was present at Thursday’s encounter) and Cardinal Kurt Koch from the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity during the Federation’s recent General Assembly in Krakow.

“In this context,” he said, “you rightly recalled a beautiful sign of hope, which has a special place in the history of reconciliation between Catholics and Lutherans.”

Pope to scientists: Harmonise faith and science in the pursuit for truth
20 June 2024, 12:13

Pope Francis urges scientists to harmonise faith and science in their pursuit of truth, emphasising that both stem from God's absolute truth and should serve humanity.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis on Thursday addressed Participants at the second conference of the Vatican Specola, which focused on the theme of “Black Holes, Gravitational Waves and Space-Time Singularities”.

The Holy Father warmly welcomed all those present by paying homage to Archbishop George Lemaître, to whom the scientists’ conference was dedicated.

Pope Francis noted that the scientific value of the Belgian priest and cosmologist has been recognised by the International Astronomical Union, which, he noted, “has decided that the well-known Hubble law should more properly be called the Hubble-Lemaître law”.

As the scientists gathered to debate “the latest questions posed by scientific research in cosmology”, Pope Francis assured them that “the Church is attentive to such research and promotes it, because it shakes the sensitivity and intelligence of the men and women of our time”.

Pope to university students: 'Stay true to your convictions and faith'
20 June 2024, 16:13

Via livestream, Pope Francis dialogues with students in the "Building Bridges Across Asia Pacific initiative" organized by Loyola University Chicago together with the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Always hold true to your convictions.... and even if you are tempted to live a lukewarm faith because others torment you, hold true to your identity and stay strong like the Christian martyrs who were persecuted...

This message was at the heart of Pope Francis' remarks during a dialogue with university students from Asia. They were participating in the '"Building Bridges Across Asia Pacific" event, on Thursday 20 June, organized by Loyola University Chicago and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

The Holy Father participated via livestream.

Loyola University Chicago launched the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), a student-centered and university-organized series of events, having been inspired by Pope Francis' call to synodality. The first encounter took place in February 2022, entitled "Building Bridges North-South." The second, "Building Bridges Across Africa", took place in November that same year and involved students from across Sub-Saharan Africa. This event followed a similar model, but welcomed the Pope's participation.

Among those participating in this most recent synodal encounter were university students, pursuing various fields, from the Ateneo de Manila University (Manila, Philippines); Australian Catholic University (Brisbane, Australia); Fu Jen Catholic University (Taipei, Taiwan); Sogang University (Seoul, South Korea); Sophia University (Tokyo, Japan); Universitas Sanata Dharma (Yogyakarta, Indonesia). Students also participated from Singapore, Timor Leste, and Papua New Guinea, nations the Holy Father is set to visit during his Apostolic Journey to Asia and Oceania in September.

Vigano announces on X he is being tried for schism

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the former Apostollic Nuncio to the United States, publishes a copy of a decree summoning him to appear before the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith to answer charges of schism.
Vatican News

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, former apostolic nuncio to the United States, has posted on his “X” account a communication from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith summoning him to Rome to face an “extrajudicial penal process” (also known as an “administrative process”) for the canonical crime of schism.

According to the social account, which reproduces a copy of a decree attributed to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Viganò was to appear Thursday afternoon (or appoint his own defense counsel) at 3:30 p.m. to “take notice of the accusations and evidence concerning the crime of schism of which he has been accused (public statements which result in a denial of the elements necessary to maintain communion with the Catholic Church; denial of the legitimacy of Pope Francis; a rupture of communion with him; and rejection of the Second Vatican Council).” The document warns that should he fail to appear, or to provide a written defense submitted by June 28, the archbishop “will be judged in his absence.”

Re: Vatican financial trial

Defendant in Vatican trial takes case to UN, accuses pope of violating his rights with surveillance
NICOLE WINFIELD
New York — June 20, 202

One of the defendants in the Vatican’s big financial trial has filed a formal complaint with the United Nations, alleging that Pope Francis violated his human rights by authorizing wide-ranging surveillance during the investigation.

A lawyer for Raffaele Mincione, a London-based financier, submitted a complaint last week to the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights via a special procedure that allows individuals or groups to provide the U.N. with information about alleged rights violations in countries or institutions.

The Vatican on Thursday rejected the claim, saying the investigation followed all relevant laws and international agreements and that no surveillance was ordered for Mincione.

The filing marks the latest and highest-profile complaint about the Vatican trial, highlighting the peculiarity of the Vatican’s criminal justice system and its seeming incompatibility with European and democratic norms. The Vatican is an absolute monarchy where the pope wields supreme legislative, executive and judicial power

Pope Francis names Chinese bishop who attended Synod on Synodality to Archdiocese of Hangzhou
By Hannah Brockhaus
Vatican City, Jun 22, 2024 / 10:00 am

Pope Francis has named Bishop Joseph Yang Yongqiang to lead the Archdiocese of Hangzhou in China, transferring him from the Diocese of Zhoucun, the Vatican announced Saturday.

The June 12 nomination took place “within the framework of dialogue concerning the implementation of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China,” the Vatican’s June 22 press release said.

The new archbishop was one of two bishops from mainland China to participate in the October 2023 session of the Synod on Synodality in Rome.

1st Bishop of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham: Bishop David Waller
22 June 2024, 14:44

The Prefect of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith celebrates Mass for the ordination of the first Bishop of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham and notes that the Ordinariate is structured to enable Anglicans, entering into full communion with the Catholic Church, to preserve elements of the Anglican tradition that are "a treasure to be shared."

London - “A shepherd leads from within.” With these words, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, encouraged Bishop-elect David Waller as he was about to be ordained to the episcopacy on June 22 at Westminster Cathedral in London and commence his ministry as Bishop of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham.

Established in 2011 under the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus, the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham is a diocese-like structure for groups of former Anglicans who have entered into communion with the Catholic Church. It has since expanded to around fifty communities across Great Britain. Bishop Waller, who was an Anglican minister before entering into full communion with the Catholic Church, is the first bishop of this Ordinariate.

The presence of Cardinal Fernández as the principal ordaining bishop reflects the special relationship the Ordinariates of Anglicanorum Coetibus have with the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, Bishop Stephen Lopes, Bishop of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter in the United States and Canada, and Bishop Anthony Randazzo, the Apostolic Administrator of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross in Australia, were the other ordaining bishops.

Pope Francis met on Saturday with the Presidencies of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE) and the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE).

During his meeting with the COMECE the Holy Father discussed a number of topics, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and the outcome of the recent European elections, which have seen a significant increase in nationalistic and Eurosceptic parties in several, specifically in several Western European countries.

After the audience Archbishop Antoine Hérouard, who serves as Vice-President of COMECE, shared with Vatican News the European bishops’ concerns on the challenges facing the EU institutions at this critical time, and the role Christian Churches and other religious communities can play in helping Europe rediscover its  “European soul”, as Pope Francis put it, its founding spirit of peaceful unity also to confront Russia's war in Ukraine.

Exiting U.S. envoy plays down clash with Vatican over China, climate
By Elise Ann Allen
Jun 22, 2024

ROME – U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Joseph Donnelly, who will depart from his post this summer, has touted the Vatican as a key partner in promoting human dignity, and, while acknowledging differences over issues such as China and the climate, he played down such divergences.

Speaking to Crux, Donnelly acknowledged that the United States and the Holy See “don’t agree on China.”

“Our experience has been that without China, Russia’s attack against Ukraine would be over, that China supplies them with technology, with information, with assistance that keeps their war machine rolling. China has been incredibly oppressive against the Uyghurs, and parts of the Church,” he said.

However, Donnelly said he has discussed this information with the Holy See and voiced his belief that Rome understands the concerns, but “is hoping that China can start to improve, and we do as well, and is reaching out to try to help the 12 million Catholics there.”

“What we hope is that they do it with a very clear eye of what’s going on in China,” he said.

Pope at Angelus: 'Amid trials and 'storms', do I cling to Christ?'
23 June 2024, 12:06

During his Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis calls on faithful amid all uncertainty and fear, to draw fearlessly toward Christ who will always calm the storm.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Even amid turmoil and distress, we are to abandon ourselves to the Lord, trusting in Him always...

This was the comforting message Pope Francis offered to the faithful at his weekly Angelus address on Sunday.

Speaking to the thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square at midday, the Holy Father reflected on today's Gospel reading according to St. Mark, which recounts the story of when Jesus and the disciples were in a boat on Lake Tiberias, and the disciples were terrified, as Jesus slept, when a sudden and strong storm threatened, or so it seemed, the sinking of the boat.

Pope Francis: 'The Holy Irish Abbot St. Columban enriched the Church'
23 June 2024, 17:30

Recalling the Irish missionary monk of St. Columban and his immense legacy, Pope Francis offers encouragement to all assembled in Piacenza, Italy, for 'Columban’s Day 2024,' marking the twenty-fifth International Meeting of Columban Associations.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

The legacy of Irish abbot, St. Columban, has enriched the Church and civil society.

Pope Francis stressed this in the message he sent Sunday to participants in the XXV International Meeting of Columban Associations for the “Columban’s Day 2024” celebration, 22-23 June, in Piacenza, Italy, the region in which Columban had founded his last monastery in the small town of Bobbio in 614.

Born in 543 in Ireland's Leinster region, St. Columban was a missionary to Europe during the Middle Ages, an intrepid monk, and a scholar.

Pope praises St Peter's Circle for 155 years of selfless service
24 June 2024, 11:28

Ahead of the Jubilee of Hope, Pope Francis applauds St. Peter's Circle for their work to the Church and invites them to intensify their efforts by passing down their heritage and cultivating love and charity.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

"With your presence, with your closeness, compassion and tenderness, you have greatly served the Church and also prepare the city of Rome for the Jubilee..."

The Holy Father expressed this gratitude on Monday morning in the Vatican to members of the St Peter’s Circle volunteer association, which for 155 years, has been supporting the Church’s charitable activities and helping those most in need.

The Circle was founded in 1869, by a group of young Romans.

The Pope warmly welcomed the Circle's members as he fondly recalled their history of service to predecessor Popes, and asked those before him to extend his greetings to their President, facing health issues, as he wished him a speedy recovery.

Pope Francis appoints Archbishop Georg Gänswein as Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.
By Vatican News

A statement on Monday released by the Holy See Press Office said Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Titular Archbishop of Urbisaglia, and Prefect Emeritus of the Papal Household, as Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia.

Archbishop Gänswein, who is 67, served as Pope Benedict XVI’s private secretary during his entire pontificate and retirement.

In December 2012, Pope Benedict XVI also appointed him Prefect of the Pontifical Household. He was ordained as archbishop in January 2013.

He continued to hold both positions after Benedict resigned from the papacy about seven weeks later, in February 2013. For about seven years, Archbishop Gänswein served both Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict.

Pope Francis meets with Opus Dei prelate Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz
By Nicolás de Cárdenas, Walter Sánchez Silva
ACI Prensa Staff, Jun 24, 2024 / 17:30 pm

The press office of the Holy See reported that Pope Francis received on Monday the “moderator general” of Opus Dei, Monsignor Fernando de Ocáriz, accompanied by Monsignor Mariano Fazio, auxiliary vicar of the prelature.

The name “moderator general” has been used since the last motu proprio of Pope Francis regarding Opus Dei and is used interchangeably with the traditional name of prelate, as explained to ACI Prensa, CNA’s Spanish- language news partner, by Clara Fontan of the communications office of Opus Dei in Rome.
