Pope’s September prayer intention: For the cry of the earth
30 August 2024, 16:00

In a video message accompanying his prayer intention for September, Pope Francis prays that "each of us might listen with our hearts to the cry of the earth and of the victims of environmental disasters and climate change, making a personal commitment to care for the world we inhabit."
By Christopher Wells

Considering rising temperatures around the globe, we can say the earth has a “fever”, Pope Francis says in his video-message announcing this month’s prayer intention.

The earth “is sick”, he continues, “just like anyone who’s sick”.

“But are we listening to this pain?” he asks. “Do we hear the pain of the millions of victims of environmental catastrophes."

In his message the Holy Father notes that it is the poor who suffer most from these disasters, pointing especially to those forced to leave their homes due to floods, heat waves, or drought.

Our response, he continues, must be comprehensive, involving not only ecological but also “social, economic, and political” action.

“We must commit ourselves to the fight against poverty and the protection of nature, changing our personal and community habits.”

“We must commit ourselves to the fight against poverty”, the Pope says, and to “the protection of nature” by making both personal and communal changes”.

Pope Francis’ prayer during the month of September – when the Church observes the “Season of Creation” – is “that each of us might listen with our hearts to the cry of the earth and of the victims of environmental disasters and climate change, making a personal commitment to care for the world we inhabit”.

Pope: We are called to live our faith consistently in prayer and practice
01 September 2024, 12:38

Before leading the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis reflects on the Sunday Gospel and reminds us that our relationship with God goes beyond outward gestures and calls on us to cultivate interior attitudes of charity, love and tenderness.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis recounted how in today's Gospel, Jesus speaks about purity and impurity in response to the accusation by some scribes and pharisees that He allowed his disciples to have food without performing the purity ritual of the washing of hands. The Lord then spoke about the importance of purity, but not linked to external rituals, but first and foremost about inner disposition. The Pope explained how Jesus points out the contradiction of external purifying gestures, like the washing of one's hands several times, if the person still harbours in the heart evil thoughts, such as greed, envy, pride, deceit, theft or slander.

“Jesus draws attention to the need to beware of ritualism, which does not make one grow in goodness; on the contrary, this ritualism can sometimes lead one to neglect, or even justify, in oneself and in others, choices and attitudes contrary to charity, which wound the soul and close the heart.”

Pope Francis offers his closeness and prayers to Cardinal Pietro Parolin and his family on the death of their mother, Ada Miotti Parolin, who was 96 years old. The funeral will be held the morning of 3 September in Schiavon in the province of Vicenza.
By Vatican News

Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical promoting labor and condemning socialism: Rerum Novarum
By Tyler Arnold
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Sep 2, 2024 / 08:00 am

As European society was grappling with the impact of the Industrial Revolution and the rise of socialist ideology in the late 1800s, Pope Leo XIII issued an encyclical that expressed empathy with the discontentment of laborers but outright condemnation of the socialist movements of the time.

The papal encyclical, called Rerum Novarum and published in May 1891, emphasizes a need for reforms to protect the dignity of the working class while maintaining a relationship with capital and the existence of private property.

The message was promulgated fewer than 50 years after Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels published “The Communist Manifesto” in 1848 and after Pope Pius IX denounced both socialism and communism in his 1849 encyclical Nostis et Nobiscum.

As Americans celebrate Labor Day in 2024, Pope Leo’s teachings can still help inform readers on the proper relationship between labor and capital.

Leo writes of a “great mistake” embraced by the socialist-leaning labor movements, which is the notion that “class is naturally hostile to class” and “wealthy and the working men are intended by nature to live in mutual conflict.”

This view, he asserts, is “so false … that the direct contrary is the truth.”

Labor has long been a central concern of Catholic social teaching. Starting with Rerum Novarum, the seminal encyclical of Catholic social teaching issued by Pope Leo XIII in 1891, through the current pontificate of Pope Francis, the role of work and rights of workers have been a focus of the papal magisterium and, consequently, of Catholic social ethics.

In 1981, however, St. Pope John Paul II issued his first social encyclical and labor was not a central part of it; labor was the focus of the entire document. Laborem exercens broke new ground in the church's reflection on labor by returning to the earliest sources in the Christian Scriptures. Instead of following the example of earlier popes whose social teaching was voiced almost exclusively in terms of natural law theory, John Paul II began with a reflection on the Book of Genesis.

The papal plane departed from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport at 5:32 PM, as the Pope began his 45th Apostolic Journey abroad.

The 12-day visit to four countries in Asia and Oceania will be the longest Pope Francis has ever made as the Successor of Peter.

Ahead of his departure from the Casa Santa Marta, the Pope met with 15 people who are homeless and assisted by the Dicastery for the Service of Charity.

According to the Holy See Press Office, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski accompanied the group to the Pope’s residence for a brief visit.

“This afternoon, shortly after 4:00 PM, around fifteen homeless individuals, both men and women, accompanied by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Papal Almoner, visited Pope Francis at Casa Santa Marta before his departure for his upcoming Apostolic Journey to Asia and Oceania,” said a statement

We must have been about 40 minutes into the ITA Airways papal flight to Jakarta for the first stop of the Pope‘s 12-day visit to four countries in Asia and Oceania.

As per protocol, we boarded the plane well before the Holy Father and were well settled in the section at the back of the plane reserved for the press.

Spirits were high, and old friends and acquaintances of many journeys past were chatting across the isles, when suddenly a crack in the curtains separating the various sections of the plane gave way to an expectant lull and buzz of excitement: Pope Francis had come to greet us!

Pope Francis is welcomed in Jakarta, Indonesia

After more than 13 hours aboard the papal flight, Pope Francis lands in Jakarta, as he sets forth upon his 45th Apostolic Journey abroad, and longest thus far of his pontificate, to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Singapore.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Pope Francis has arrived in Jakarta, kicking off his 45th Apostolic Journey abroad to Asia and Oceania.

The flight arrived a few minutes early at the Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in the Indonesian capital at about 11:19 AM local time. The ITA-Airways papal flight, carrying the Pope and the journalists following the Journey, had left Rome's Fiumicino International Airport at 5:32 PM local time Monday afternoon.

Aboard the aircraft, the Holy Father individually greeted the press accompanying him.

Once landed, the Holy Father was welcomed warmly in Jakarta. While he will take it easy on Tuesday with no public events on his schedule, on Wednesday, the Pope will have several appointments in the capital as he kicks off the intense 12-day Visit.

In spite of this, shortly after Pope Francis arrived at the apostolic nunciature in Jakarta, he privately met with refugees taken in by the Jesuit Refugee Service, orphaned children raised by Dominican nuns, as well as elderly, refugees, and homeless people accompanied by the Indonesian Community of Sant'Egidio.

The Holy Father will spend three nights in Jakarta, before continuing his Asiatic Visit, marking the longest thus far of his pontificate, to Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, and Singapore. The Pope will be welcomed by Cardinals in each country, three of whom were created Cardinals by Pope Francis himself, as the first-ever Eminences of their countries.

After arriving in Jakarta on Tuesday morning for the first leg of his Apostolic Visit to four Pacific nations, Pope Francis was welcomed by children and migrants on the eve of the official Welcome Ceremony at the Presidential Palace.
By Linda Bordoni - Jakarta

Hailing from just two of the almost 17,500 islands that form Indonesia that are home to over 1,300 ethnic groups and about 719 different languages, 5-year-old Mary in her typical Javan costume and 10-year-old Iphrim from Papua stood solemnly before the Indonesian Guard of Honour at Jakarta airport to greet Pope Francis on Tuesday morning. Timidly, they presented him with a large bouquet of flowers and the assurance he is a most welcome guest for every citizen of this incredibly pluralistic and diverse nation.

Yes, because although Catholics make up only about 3 per cent of the 280 million-strong population that is overwhelmingly Muslim, Indonesia is proud of its diversity and peaceful cohabitation as its founding “Pancasila” principles decree, and as Indonesian Cardinal Ignacio Suharyo pointed out just before the trip: “It is not only Catholics who enthusiastically welcome the Pope’s visit, but also sisters and brothers from other faith communities.”

Pope to Indonesian authorities: ‘Interreligious dialogue fosters mutual respect’
04 September 2024, 05:57

As he meets with Indonesia’s civil authorities in Jakarta, Pope Francis upholds the nation’s motto of “Unity in Diversity,” and promises the Catholic Church’s efforts to support interreligious dialogue and civil harmony.
By Devin Watkins

Pope Francis delivered his first speech on Indonesian soil on Wednesday as he met with the country’s authorities, civil society, and diplomatic corps at the Istana Negara presidential palace in Jakarta.

He was welcomed by President Joko Widodo, a crowd of Indonesian children waiving Vatican and Indonesian flags, and several members of the presidential guard.

Signing the Book of Honour, the Pope wrote, in Italian: “Immersed in the beauty of this land, a place of encounter and dialogue between different cultures and religions, I wish the Indonesian people growth in faith, fraternity, and compassion. God bless Indonesia!”

Pope Francis greets Cardinal Julius Riyadi Darmaatmadja, SJ

Pope Francis has held his customary encounter with his brother Jesuits at the Apostolic Nunciature in Jakarta on the second day of his Apostolic Journey to Indonesia.
By Salvatore Cernuzio and Devin Watkins

Pope Francis met Wednesday with members of the Society of Jesus serving in Indonesia, as he continues his Apostolic Journey to the country.

The encounter took place at the Apostolic Nunciature in Jakarta following his meeting with Indonesia's authorities, civil society, and diplomatic corps at the presidential palace.

Among those present at the Nunciature was Cardinal Julius Riyadi Darmaatmadja, SJ, the 89-year-old Archbishop Emeritus of Jakarta (1996-2010).

As he usually does, the Pope spoke with the Jesuits privately for around an hour and answered several questions.

‘Brotherly visit among confreres’

According to Fr. Antonio Spadaro, SJ, Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, the encounter was warm and familiar.

“Pope Francis is always very relaxed,” Fr. Spadaro told Vatican News. “He feels at home, so he is able to give his initial feedback on the visit.”

With his Indonesian confreres, he added, the Pope expressed his surprise and joy at seeing so many young people.

“It is perhaps what struck me the most,” he said. “The Holy Father noticed how young the Jesuits in formation in Indonesia are,” said Fr. Spadaro.

He said the Pope spoke about the Society of Jesus and the importance of discernment and prayer.

Pope invites Indonesian clergy to ‘bear witness to the resurrection'

Pope Francis meets with bishops, priests, deacons, religious men and women, seminarians, and catechists in Jakarta’s Cathedral, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption.
By Christopher Wells

After hearing testimonies from a priest, a religious sister, and two catechists (a man and a woman), Pope Francis reflected on the three virtues that comprise the theme of his Apostolic Journey to Indonesia: faith, fraternity, and compassion. “I think these are three virtues that express well both your journey as a Church and your character as a people, who are ethnically and culturally diverse”, the Pope said. “At the same time, you are characterized by an innate striving for unity and peaceful coexistence”.

Pope Francis meets with members of Scholas Occurrentes

Pope Francis meets with young members of the ‘Scholas Occurentes’ as part of his first full day in Jakarta, Indonesia, and gives them four guidelines for peaceful coexistence.
By Francesca Merlo

A much awaited meeting, as Pope Francis begins his 45th Apostolic Journey abroad. The encounter with members of Scholas Occurentes - a regular feature of the Pope's foreign visits - always touches on some of the themes most important to the Holy Father’s heart and to his pontificate. They go hand in hand with the motto of the Indonesian people: “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, or Unity in Diversity.

Scholas, a global educational project founded by the Pope, focuses on engaging youth in education, art, and sports. The 200 young people from the Indonesian branch, who come from various islands, schools, and religions, greeted the Pope in Jakarta’s “Grha Pemuda” Youth House, demonstrating precisely the diversity and unity so important both to the Pope and to the Indonesian people.

The Polyhedron

A sculpture of a polyhedron dominated the room where the meeting took place. So big that the Pope was able to step inside it. It was made by over 1500 young people from Jakarta, Lombok, Labuan Bayo and Bali. Two women inside the Polyhedron greeted Pope Francis, before sharing their testimonies.

Pope at mosque in Indonesia: May we cultivate friendship as pilgrims on our way to God
05 September 2024, 05:25

Pope Francis visits Indonesia’s Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta for an interreligious meeting, and pays tribute to the people’s “great gift” of working for dialogue, mutual respect, and harmonious coexistence, to which we are all called.
By Thaddeus Jones

Pope Francis began the third day of his Apostolic Journey to Asia and Oceania on Thursday, 5 September, by visiting the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, Indonesia, for an interreligious meeting in southeast Asia’s largest mosque.

Welcoming him was the Grand Imam, Dr. Nasaruddin Umar. Together they also visited the “Tunnel of Friendship,” which provides an underground walkway connecting the Istiqlal Mosque with the Catholic Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption.

They also signed the Joint Declaration of Istiqlal 2024, underscoring that the values common to all religious traditions be effectively promoted to “defeat the culture of violence and indifference” and promote reconciliation and peace.

In his address, Pope Francis thanked the Grand Imam for his warmth and hospitality, and for reminding everyone how this place of worship and prayer is “a great house for humanity” where people can take time to remember the “yearning for the infinite” that we carry in our hearts and the need “to seek an encounter with the divine and experience the joy of friendship with others.”

Pope in Jakarta: You are champions of love in the Olympics of life
05 September 2024, 05:45

Pope Francis meets with beneficiaries of charitable organisations, hears their testimonies, and calls each of them a "champion of love in the great Olympics of life."
By Francesca Merlo

At the Headquarters of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference (KWI - Konferensi Waligereja Indonesia), for the second event on his second full day in Indonesia, Pope Francis met with beneficiaries from several charitable organisations.

The President of the Bishops' Conference, Bishop Antonius Subianto, opened the meeting by describing the people of Indonesia's love for the Pope as "boundless", before introducing him to some of the ill, disabled, and poor present in the KWI. Two of them shared their stories.
