Pope at Angelus: Children are God's greatest blessing
06 October 2024, 12:07
During his Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis encourages Christian couples to persevere in love, marriage, and welcoming the beautiful gift of life, which he acknowledges is demanding, but well worth it
.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov
"Let us not forget, also, that for spouses, it is essential to be open to the gift of life, to children, that are the most beautiful fruit of love, the greatest blessing from God, a source of joy and hope for every home and for all of society."
Pope Francis offered this reminder during his Sunday Angelus address in the Vatican.
Addressing the thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square, the Holy Father recounted the day's Gospel according to St. Mark in which Jesus speaks to us about marital love.

Pope Francis leads Rosary prayer for peace for ‘world in danger’
06 October 2024, 18:18
Pope Francis leads the recitation of a Rosary for peace at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, and prays that violence and hatred may be extinguished from human hearts.
By Devin Watkins
“Transform the hearts of those who fuel hatred, silence the din of weapons that generate death, extinguish the violence that brews in the heart of humanity, and inspire projects for peace in the actions of those who govern nations.”
Pope Francis made that supplication for peace on Sunday evening as he prayed the Rosary at the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
He was joined by participants in the Synod on Synodality taking place in the Vatican this month.

‘I am close to you,’ says Pope to martyred flock in the Holy Land
07 October 2024, 12:54
Marking one year from the Hamas attacks on Israel that plunged the Holy Land into all-out war, Pope Francis addresses a letter to the Catholics of the region decrying the “shameful inability of the international community and powerful countries to put an end to the war” and expressing his closeness to those who "suffer the devastation which the powerful impose on others."
By Linda Bordoni
In a letter dated 7 October 2024, one year from the "sad day" when the lighting “of the fuse of hatred (…) that exploded in a spiral of violence,” Pope Francis reaches out to the Catholics of the Holy Land “as blood and tears are still being shed.”
“I am thinking of you and praying for you,” the Pope says, decrying “the shameful inability of the international community and the most powerful countries to silence the weapons and put an end to the tragedy of war.”
He notes that “Anger is growing, along with the desire for revenge, while it seems that few people care about what is most needed and what is most desired: dialogue and peace.”
“War is a defeat,” he reiterates, "Weapons do not build the future but destroy it, violence never brings peace. History proves this, yet years and years of conflict seem to have taught us nothing.”

Second Session of the XVI General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops[ -- Oct. 2–27, 2024

Cardinal Hollerich at Synod: We must become peacemakers in service of humanity
07 October 2024, 16:46
In his address on the second module of the Synod’s Instrumentum Laboris dedicated to "Relations," the General Relator, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, reflects on the moment of prayer in the Basilica of St. Mary Major on Sunday evening saying "May the prayer for peace help us place our work today in the right perspective".
By Vatican News
Recalling the Rosary for Peace prayed on Sunday evening by Synod members with Pope Francis in the Basilica of St. Mary Major, Cardinal Hollerich, General Relator of the Synod, called on the assembly to continue interceding today “through the ancient and traditional practice of fasting.”
His invitation came as men and women of goodwill across the world heed Pope Francis’ call for a Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace on Monday, October 7, marking the first anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.
Thus, at the start of the sessions, Synod participants reaffirmed this intention as did Cardinal Hollerich, who presented Module II of the Instrumentum Laboris, focused on the theme "Relations."
“The prayer for peace,” Cardinal Hollerich emphasized, “helps us approach today’s work on the section dedicated to Relations with the proper focus: May our desire for peace guide our reflections and discussions, and may the Lord show us the way to become peacemakers, in service of all humanity.”
The Archbishop of Luxembourg also took the opportunity to offer his congratulations to the soon-to-be new members of the College of Cardinals, announced by Pope Francis during the Angelus, particularly those present in the Synod Hall.

The story so far
Oct. 7: Pope invites prayer for the Middle East as participants from that region begin week 2 of the synod
Since the beginning of the Synod on Synodality, synod delegates and participants have echoed Pope Francis’ pleas for prayers and solidarity with communities across the war-ravaged region. As the second week of the synod gets underway, on the World Day of Prayer and Fasting held on the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Pope Francis addressed Catholics in the Middle East on the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ attack on Israel. Kirstina Millare has more.
Oct. 7: Women deacons off the table? Synod delegate claims ‘some women sense a call to priesthood’
While the topic of “women deacons” is not formally up for discussion at the Synod on Synodality assembly this month, the official Vatican press conference for the synod showcases a female delegate who spoke about women experiencing “a call to priesthood,” Courtney Mares reports.

Women deacons off the table? Synod delegate claims ‘some women sense a call to priesthood’
By Courtney Mares
Vatican City, Oct 7, 2024 / 13:45 pm
While “women deacons” are not formally up for discussion at the Synod on Synodality assembly this month, the official Vatican press conference for the synod on Monday showcased a female delegate who spoke about women experiencing “a call to priesthood.”
Synod delegate Sister Mary Theresa Barron, OLA, said that while we tend to look at the topic of women deacons from the perspective of “can women or can they not be ordained in the Church today?” — she believes that the question should also be asked in another way.
“I think we have to look at the question very much from … the Spirit. ‘Is the Spirit calling women?’ Because some women do sense a call to priesthood or diaconate,” she said on Oct. 7.

Pope to Jesuits: Roles for women in the Vatican are changing
08 October 2024, 11:09
“La Civiltà Cattolica” publishes the full text of Pope Francis’ encounter with 150 Jesuit confreres from Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands at the Collège Saint-Michel in Brussels. During the meeting, the Pope addresses the role of women in the Church, encourages Jesuits “not to be afraid of anything,” and reiterates the call to welcome and integrate migrants
.
By Salvatore Cernuzio
The theme of women and their role in the Church, which came up several times during the September 26-29 trip to Luxembourg and Belgium, was also central in Pope Francis' conversation with the 150 Jesuits he met in Brussels.
As in every apostolic journey, the took time for a private meeting with the members of the Society of Jesus. The encounter was sandwiched between a visit to the campus of the Université Catholique in Louvain and a surprise stop at the Brussels Expo Hall with 6,000 young people gathered for a vigil.
The meeting with the Jesuit brethren not only from Belgium, but also from Luxembourg and the Netherlands, took place in the Collège Saint-Michel. It was a private meeting, interspersed with questions and answers on topics related to the mission of the Society of Jesus today or on current events in the world and the Church – from secularization to inculturation, from the Synod to migration – and also with a song sung with guitar accompaniment at the opening by the superior of the Region of the Netherlands, Father Marc Desmet.
Following the usual custom, La Civiltà Cattolica has published the full text of the dialogue, in an article signed by Father Antonio Spadaro, which emphasizes its “spontaneity” and “immediacy.”

Bernini’s baldacchino to be unveiled on October 27
08 October 2024, 15:29
After 8 months under scaffolding, Pope Francis will inaugurate the newly refurbished baldacchino with a Mass—also signaling the end of the Synod
.
By Kielce Gussie
October 27 marks a significant day in the Vatican. Both the Synod and the work on the baldacchino covering the main altar in St. Peter’s Basilica will end. The Archpriest of the Basilica, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, announced that Pope Francis will celebrate Mass and officially unveil the newly refurbished baldacchino.
An important date in the Church
“This is a significant date for many reasons,” the Cardinal explained. “October 27 will mark the conclusion of the Synod and Pope Francis will hold the concluding Eucharistic celebration. However, Oct. 27 is also a date of peace because it recalls the interreligious meeting desired by St. John Paul II in 1986 in Assisi.”
Pope Francis has seen the progress on the baldacchino and, Cardinal Gambetti, said, he “appreciated it very much.”

Synod Briefing - Day 5: Embracing pain of people suffering from war
07 October 2024, 18:28
The press briefing on day 5 of the Synod General Assembly reveals that participants marked the Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace with a special moment dedicated to the first anniversary of Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel and the subsequent escalation, highlighted the role of women in the Church, and focused on building bridges
.

Monday morning’s Synod sessions, with 351 participants, “were preceded by a prayer and a moment of heartfelt participation in the suffering of people in the Middle East due to war, on a day, October 7, that is dramatically symbolic.”
Paolo Ruffini, the Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, announced this during a briefing for journalists. He also noted that Pope Francis had sent a letter to Catholics in the Middle East “on this sad day.”
Furthermore, Dr. Ruffini shared that Cardinal Grech reminded the Synod participants that Monday was “a day of prayer and fasting,” at the Pope’s request, following Sunday evening's Rosary for Peace at the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
Dr. Ruffini reported that Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Papal Almoner, announced a fundraising effort beginning in the afternoon. It will specifically provide support for the only Catholic parish in Gaza and its priest, Fr. Gabriel Romanelli, “whom the Pope calls every day to express his closeness to those who suffer.”
9 of the 21 new cardinals announced by the Pope on Sunday will take part in this initiative. They are: Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera, Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi, Pablo Virgilio Siongco David, Ladislav Nemet, Jaime Spengler, Ignace Bessi Dogbo, Dominique Mathieu, Roberto Repole, and Timothy Peter Joseph Radcliffe.

The Catholic Church’s final session of the multiyear Synod on Synodality has entered its second week. Pope Francis has urged participants to listen to the Holy Spirit rather than pursue personal agendas

The story so far
Oct. 8: Synod participants donate for Gaza parish
In a video played for journalists at the Holy See Press Office on Oct. 8, Gaza parish priest Father Gabriel Romanelli thanks synod participants for both prayers and financial help, because in Gaza, “everyone is in need of everything.”
The pope’s charity office announces that synod participants donated 32,000 euros (about $35,000) for the Catholic parish in Gaza from synod participants on Oct. 7, the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel.
The synod donations were combined with another 30,000 euros (about $33,000) from Pope Francis’ charity coffers and sent to Holy Family Parish, the only Roman Catholic parish in the Gaza Strip, which is sheltering hundreds of Palestinian Catholics.

Pope’s November prayer intention: For those who have lost a child
31 October 2024, 16:00
In his prayer intention for November, Pope Francis prays that all parents who mourn the loss of s son or daughter might find consolation in their community, and may receive peace of heart from the Spirit of Consolation
.
By Christopher Wells
“There are no words” that can console a parent who has lost a child, Pope Francis says in the video-message for his November prayer intention. Although we have words for those who have lost spouses or parents, there’s not word for those who have lost their children.
Even attempts at consolation, words of consolation, can seem banal or sentimental; even when uttered with the best intentions, “they can end up aggravating the wound.”
Instead, the Pope says, “To offer comfort to these parents who have lost a child, we need to listen to them, to be close to them with love, to care responsibly for the pain they feel, imitating how Jesus Christ consoled those who were afflicted.”

Pope on All Saints' Day: With the Lord's help, let's aspire to holiness
01 November 2024, 12:33
During his Angelus address on this Solemnity of All Saints, Pope Francis invites faithful to not see holiness as unattainable, and urges them, like the Saints, to take little steps to live more holy lives
.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov
"Do I ask God, in prayer, for the gift of a holy life? Do I let myself be guided by the good impulses that His Spirit inspires in me? And do I commit myself personally to practising the Beatitudes of the Gospel, in the environments in which I live?"
Pope Francis called on faithful to reflect seriously on these questions during his Angelus address in the Vatican on the Solemnity of All Saints.
The Holy Father began by recalling the day's Gospel according to St. Matthew, in which Jesus proclaims the Beatitudes, which Pope Francis called once again "the Christian's identity card" and helps us on the path toward holiness.

Pope at the Angelus: The source of everything is love
03 November 2024, 12:00
During his Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis stresses that exterior practices do not matter, but rather how we love one another.
By Kielce Gussie
During his Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis reflected on St. Mark’s Gospel passage of what the greatest commandment is. He explained that the question is not one just for biblical times but it “is essential for us too, for our life and for the journey of our faith.”
In the midst of everyday life, the to-do lists and tasks, it is possible to become overwhelmed and lost, so the Pope posed the question, “where can we find the center from which all the rest radiates?” Just as Jesus told the scribe in the Gospel, the answer lies in putting two commandments together: love of God and love of neighbor. Pope Francis called them “the heart of Christian life.”

Estonia celebrates 100 year legacy of fidelity to Catholic faith
03 November 2024, 13:27
To mark the centenary of the establishment of the country’s Apostolic Administration, the Pope sends a message praising the “small yet vibrant Church” in Estonia
.
By Kielce Gussie
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Apostolic Administration of Estonia, Pope Francis sent a letter to Bishop Philippe Jean-Charles Jourdan of the Diocese of Tallinn. An apostolic administration is a Catholic community that has not been made a diocese by the Pope and is governed by an apostolic administrator.
The Pope’s message began by recalling his journey to Estonia in 2018 and he congratulated the milestone as it “marks a century of steadfast fidelity to the Catholic faith.” He praised the “small yet vibrant Church” for being a “source of compassion and spiritual nourishment for countless men and women across the nation.”

The Vatican introduced an anime-style mascot named Luce to represent Catholic pilgrims in the 2025 Jubilee year on Monday, Oct. 28 — and within a week, the character has already become a viral internet sensation
.
In less than seven days, hundreds of memes and fan art renditions of Luce (pronounced Lu-Chay) popped up on social media websites such as Facebook, X, Reddit, and TikTok and have been circulating the platforms.
The character has become particularly popular with Catholic meme accounts and groups but also has a presence in non-Catholic spaces, such as with amateur anime artists, Protestant meme accounts, and some secular and political meme accounts. It has also inspired Halloween costumes and the creation of a cryptocurrency called Luce Token, which has a market capitalization that has surpassed $50 million.

Bishop Robert Barron pans ‘Conclave’ movie: ‘Run away from it as fast as you can’
By Tyler Arnold
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Nov 5, 2024 / 06:00 am
Bishop Robert Barron is urging Catholics to skip the new film “Conclave” — a fictional movie that depicts a papal conclave — saying that it “checks every woke box.”
“If you are interested in a film about the Catholic Church that could have been written by the editorial board of the New York Times, this is your movie,” Barron, the bishop of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, said in a post on X after watching the film himself.
The film, based on the 2016 Robert Harris novel of the same name, hit American movie theaters on Oct. 25. It depicts ideological and theological infighting among Catholic cardinals during the election of a new pope. More traditional cardinals are pitted against others who are portrayed as being open to changes in doctrine that are contrary to Catholic teaching.
“The hierarchy of the Church is a hotbed of ambition, corruption, and desperate egotism [in the movie],” Barron continued. “Conservatives are xenophobic extremists and the liberals are self-important schemers. None can escape this irredeemable situation.”
In the movie, a fictional cardinal with female chromosomes and an intersex disorder is selected as the new pope.
“The only way forward is the embrace of the progressive buzz words of diversity, inclusion, indifference to doctrine, and the ultimate solution is a virtue-signaling cardinal who takes the papal name of Innocent and who is a biological female,” Barron said.
