The Department of Public Safety and the Providence Police Department are searching for an undergraduate student who has been missing since Friday evening.

Sunil Tripathi, a member of the class of 2013 currently not enrolled in the University, was last seen at his residence at 204 Angell Street around 7:30 p.m. Friday, Deputy Chief of Police for DPS Paul Shanley wrote in an email to The Herald.

DPS and Providence Police were advised Sunday around 1 p.m. that Tripathi had gone missing, Shanley wrote. “We have been working with the Providence police in searching the area and assisting in any way we can to help locate Sunil Tripathi,” he wrote.

Tripathi, 22, was wearing “a black jacket, blue jeans and a Philadelphia Eagles cap,” according to an ABC6.com article posted Sunday evening. Tripathi weighs 130 pounds and is 6 feet 2 inches tall. He was “possibly depressed and left home without any of his belongings,” according to ABC.

The FBI has joined the search for Sunil Tripathi, a former member of the class of 2012 who went missing Saturday morning.

An agent met with family members Thursday night to discuss the case and move forward in conjunction with the Providence Police Department and the Department of Public Safety, Tripathi’s mother Judy Tripathi said.

Law enforcement officials told the family that “the more eyes (search for Tripathi,) the better,” she said.

Police officers are “looking for Sunil alive,” she said. “Law enforcement are saying to us there is every chance he is still with us.”

Search expands for missing Brown University student

Published March 24, 2013

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  Brown University says the search for a missing student who was last seen on campus a week ago is expanding outside Providence to Boston, Connecticut, New York and Philadelphia.

Sunil Tripathi is a philosophy major at Brown who grew up in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He has been living in Providence since 2008. He was on approved leave from the Ivy League school.

Brown spokeswoman Darlene Trew Crist says in a statement Saturday that Providence and Brown police departments are leading the missing person investigation.

Sister: Police have lead in search for Brown University student
E-mail | Print | Comments () 03/25/2013 1:41 PM

Police now have a potential lead as the search continues for missing Brown University student Sunil Tripathi, his sister Sangeeta Tripathi said this morning.

Both Sangeeta Tripathi and the FBI said Providence police were working on a lead, but they didn’t release any more details. Providence police didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

Extensive media coverage has generated numerous tips for Tripathi, 22, locating him in Providence, his sister said, though nothing solid has materialized yet.

“It’s really scary also knowing that we have so many resources out there and he still isn’t found,” she said.

Volunteers have been searching commuter rail stops from Providence to Boston, which Sangeeta Tripathi said her brother rode frequently, as well as hospitals, public libraries, YMCAs, and any “places a young man with no resources could end up,” she said.

Sunil Tripathi: Missing Ivy League Student Seen in New Surveillance Video

March 30, 2013

New surveillance video footage of a missing Brown University student on the morning of his disappearance may provide authorities with new clues to help locate him.

New images from a surveillance camera show 22-year-old Sunil Tripathi, of Radnor, Pa., moments after leaving his apartment at 1:33 a.m. on March 16, just 20 minutes after he last used his computer. Police said he left his wallet and phone behind.

"Typically, two reasons people don't take the normal things they take with them is because they're stepping outside to talk to somebody, they're going half a block away, or they're not coming back," ABC News consultant and former FBI agent Brad Garrett told "Good Morning America."

Body found in river may be Sunil Tripathi - missing student wrongly linked to Boston marathon bombing
April 24, 2013

Police in Rhode Island are trying to determine whether the identity of a body of a man that was found in a river running through the city of Providence was that of a student mistakenly linked with the Boston bombings last week.

Police reportedly told local media it was “very, very possible” the body is that of missing student Sunil Tripathi, the young man misidentified on social media as a suspect in the Boston bombing case.

The Boston Globe quoted Providence police Lieutenant Joseph Donnelly as saying the body could be that of the missing 22-year-old, after it was recovered from the Providence river on Tuesday. Police were alerted to the body at around 6pm by the coach of the Brown University rowing team.

Mr Tripathi, who last year suspended his studies at Brown after enduring bouts of depression, had gone missing on 16 March. He left his phone and wallet behind in his student digs. His family launched a search across the state of Rhode Island to try to find him and produced a video which they uploaded on to YouTube urging “Sunny” to come home. Mr Tripathi’s family also set up a Facebook page to try to find him, which features videos and photos of their search.

Last week, many on social media claimed Mr Tripathi was one of two men being sought by police over the Boston bombings. Earlier this week, editors of the Reddit social-news forum apologised for what they said turned into a “witch-hunt”.

The body on which post-mortem examinations are currently being carried out was found floating in the water behind the city’s Wyndham Garden Providence hotel.

Body in river is that of Brown student, police say
April 25, 2013

(CNN) -- A body found Tuesday in Rhode Island's Providence River has been identified as that of Sunil Tripathi, a Brown University student who had been missing since mid-March, police said.
No foul play is suspected, police said, citing the state medical examiner's office.
It might take two months to determine the cause of death of the 22-year-old philosophy major, said Dara Chadwick of the Rhode Island Health Department.
The identification was made through forensic dental examination, Chadwick said.
His relatives' search for Tripathi was detailed on a Facebook page, "Help us find Sunil Tripathi." They had temporarily taken down the page after they were inundated by ugly comments when he was falsely accused on social media of being one of the Boston Marathon bombers.
Tripathi was last reported seen early March 16, on a security video walking south on Brook Street in Providence, near his home. His last recorded computer activity was shortly before that sighting.
"He was seen on the 15th, Friday, hanging out with his friends, talking to family members, all normal activities, nothing out of the ordinary that anyone detected," his brother Ravi told CNN affiliate WPRI on April 10.
Tripathi had been on leave from the Ivy League school, meaning he was granted time off but remained a student there.
Sunil was trying to figure out what he wanted to do, Ravi told WPRI.
