April 24, 2013

VILLAGE OF MANCHESTER, Ill (KSDK) - Five people are dead and one injured in a shooting in the Village of Manchester, Illinois, according to Mayor Ronald Drake.

WLDS told NewsChannel 5 a suspect is in custody.

The Scott County Sheriff's Department said a child was taken to a Springfield, Illinois hospital.

The pastor of Manchester Baptist Church told NewsChannel 5 that the murders happened inside a public housing complex on East Street Wednesday morning.

Multiple schools are on lockdown. The Jacksonville School District 117 secretary to Superintendent Steve Ptacek said the school is closed in response to a recent shootout with a suspect on Woodson Winchester Road. North Greene Unit School District #3 is closed and WLDS Radio reports Winchester schools are closed.

Manchester is about 85 miles north of St. Louis.

5 reportedly dead, 1 in custody, in Manchester, Illinois, shooting
April 24, 2013

Five people were reportedly killed in a shooting in Manchester, Ill., Wednesday morning prompting the closure of three area schools, Fox2Now.com reports.

WLDS, a radio station in the area, reports that the suspect attempted to run from the scene, got into a high-speed chase with police and shots were fired while the suspect was taken into custody.

One person was injured in the shooting, but the injuries remain unclear. The suspect, the station reports, is in custody. Police told FoxNews.com that they do not believe another suspect is at large.

The crime scene was described as a single-story apartment. The relationship between the suspect and the alleged victims was not immediately clear.

Mayor Ronald Drake said he got the call around 4:45 a.m., indicating that there had been a shooting with multiple fatalities, Fox2Now.com reports.

Drake did not say who the victims were or given any details about the suspect.

Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond says the victims were found early Wednesday morning in the southwestern Illinois community, 50 miles west of Springfield. She didn't have any details on the deaths or the circumstances surrounding the capture of the suspect.

Illinois shootings: Suspect helped wounded girl after killing 5
April 24, 2013

After he shot his way into a home in the small town of Manchester, police say Rick Odell Smith gunned down a grandmother, a young couple and three young children. Then he did something that puzzled authorities.

He scooped up one of the children, a 6-year-old girl who was still alive, and carried her to a neighbor's home. Then he jumped into his white Chevy Lumina and sped off. Police caught up with him hours later and he died in a gunfight with officers.
State Police Lt. Col. Todd Kilby couldn't explain Smith's apparent concern for the girl. "All I have is that it was a neighbor" who took her in, he told reporters.
The girl, Kassidy Ralston, remained in serious condition at a hospital in Springfield. The girl's great-grandmother, her parents and her younger brothers all died in the rampage. Relatives identified them as Joanne Sinclair, 65, Brittany Luark, 22, her boyfriend Roy Ralston, Nolan Ralston, 5, and Brantley Ralston, 1.

Smith, 43, approached the family's home southwest of Springfield shortly before dawn, around 4:30 a.m. Police said he used a shotgun to blast through a back door, and was also armed with a hunting rifle with a scope and a large hunting knife.

2 boys, 3 adults shot to death in Illinois town
April 24, 2013

MANCHESTER, Ill. (AP) — The nephew of a small-town Illinois mayor shot and killed five people, including two boys, before leading police on a chase that ended in an exchange of gunfire that left him dead, authorities said Wednesday.

Illinois State Police said they believe Rick O. Smith, 43, entered a Manchester home through the back door and shot the victims at close range with a shotgun, leaving two women, one man and the boys dead. Two people were found in a bedroom, two in a second bedroom and the man in the hallway. A sixth victim, a 6-year-old girl, was injured and taken to a Springfield hospital.
