Police profilers brought in for Heeringa search
Updated: Monday, May 13 2013, 12:48 PM EDT

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – There is new information Monday afternoon in the search for Jessica Heeringa.

Michigan State Police profilers are coming in to assist in the search.

We spoke with North Shore Police Chief Daniel Shaw and he tells us the state police profilers are expected in West Michigan Monday. They are hoping to help identify the person who took Jessica Heeringa.

Police believe Heeringa likely knew her abductor, which is why they are bringing in this new team.

The chief tells us behavior analysts are also joining the investigative team this week.

Heeringa disappeared April 26th while working alone in the gas station near Muskegon.

Chief Shaw says they are still getting tips in on a daily basis and are investigating every one that comes in.

Jessica Heeringa ‘Flyer’ On The Big Screen
1 hour ago

MUSKEGON, Mich.– As each day passes it gets harder and harder for Jessica Heeringa’s family, but one thing that keeps hope alive, the continued out-pouring of support from the community.

Steven Mayes doesn’t know Jessica or her family, he met them just recently at their command center.“I guess it was their pain of not knowing where their loved one is, I mean that`s what drew me to it” said Mayes.

Like so many, since the news of Jessica’s disapperane broke, Mayes knew he had to do something.  “That was the thing I didn`t expect a call back really, I was just spit balling out ideas.” He thought, what better way to reach people than the big screen?

Mayes worked with the V.P. of Marketing for Celebration Cinemas  over the past week. “He let me know right of the bat that this would be a stretch but he was going to put his all into making it happen and when everybody gets together and does that usually it happens.”

Mayes was sent over a few different ideas for slides until they came up with one. A big and clear picture of the suspect, the van and Jessica.

“My thought is how can it not bring some sort of useful information, somebody knows him, somebody knows where she is.” It’s now being played in every Celebration Cinema in Muskegon and Grand Rapids, during the pre-show before each PG-13 and rated R movie.

Exclusive: Fox 17 Sits Down with Jessica Heeringa’s Dad
3 hours ago

KENT CITY, Mich.-  We’ve seen Jessica Heeringa’s family out at their command center for the past two weeks but no one’s heard from her father, until now.

The past two weeks have been excruciating for Jessica’s Dad and Stepmom, Pete and Christina Jenkins.  Pete says, “My daughters gone and nobody knows where she is.”  He hasn’t seen Jessica in seven months saying distance and losing touch are to blame. “I just want her back, that’s all.” Pete says.

Police say Jessica was abducted while working at the Exxon Gas Station in Norton Shores.  Pete and Christina didn’t know she was working alone.  Pete says, “There should have been somebody there with her.  She worked at the Sparta Gas Station, but she was never alone.”

Jessica lived with Pete and Christina from ages 12-17, then moved back in when she found out she was pregnant with Zeven.  The Jenkin’s say that was a special time for them, “Going to doctors appointments with her, ya know and being there when the baby was born, it was great,” Pete says.

Pete says Jessica gets her love for music, especially The Beatles, from him.  He says he spends time in his music room to feel closer to her, “I feel helpless, my hands are tied.”

Police Chief on Jessica Heeringa case: Now is not the time for independent ground searches
on May 14, 2013 at 9:27 AM, updated May 14, 2013 at 9:32 AM

Shaw respectfully asks that the public holds off on canvassing the area for clues to Heeringa’s whereabouts.

“Our concerns about conducting ground searches at this point are, number one, we don’t have a defined area to begin a search. Based on the evidence we have, we believe she was transported from the scene, so where do we start?,” Shaw said. “The ground search would probably not be a good use of resources at this time.”

There are bigger issues behind conducting ground searches as well, he said.

“The other thing we need to consider, is if ground searches are being conducted, we need to do them legally. We can’t go tramping through people’s property. And if anything is found, we have to preserve the evidence,” he said. “If people do it themselves, those issues won’t be address properly. Valuable evidence could be ruined and we could lose the opportunity to find Jessica or her abductor.”

Police Chief: Jessica Heeringa's abduction task force to remain intact as long as 'credible leads' come in
on May 15, 2013 at 4:09 PM, updated May 15, 2013 at 4:18 PM

NORTON SHORES, MI – It will take weeks before the Michigan State Police profilers can piece together solid information in the Jessica Heeringa abduction case, but local task force investigators remain hopeful that the added assistance will make a difference.

That’s according to Norton Shores Police Chief Dan Shaw, who said the task force remains intact, still consisting of around 25 law enforcement officials – some of whom will soon return back to their own departments as the case progresses

The profilers are based at the Michigan State Police headquarters in Lansing. They are a special unit that often gets involved in hard-to-solve cases like Heeringa’s.

“We don’t know how long the profiling process will take,” Shaw said. “It could take several weeks to review all the data that we’ve provided them. They have all the reports written so far. They have videos of interviews of people and everything else. They are reviewing everything they have from us.”

Authorities don’t yet have a motive pinned down for Heeringa’s apparent abduction, Shaw said. As of Wednesday, May 15, a person of interest or suspect hasn’t yet been identified.

Jessica Heeringa's abduction case nets 'high priority tips' over the weekend
on May 20, 2013 at 10:16 AM, updated May 20, 2013 at 10:55 AM

NORTON SHORES, MI – Investigators are chasing down “high priority tips” they received over the weekend in connection to the Jessica Heeringa abduction case, said Norton Shores Police Chief Dan Shaw.

Shaw declined to give details about the information authorities received, but said they consider it “high priority” and on Sunday, May 19, investigators began to actively investigate them.

“We just have to figure out what’s true and what’s not. There are a couple tips that the guys are actively investigating since Sunday. Hopefully, we’re getting closer. Every piece of information we get is beneficial,” Shaw said.

“We are starting to get more information this morning. We’re moving forward. It’s all we can do," he added.

Second woman accused of fraudently raising funds to send Jessica Heeringa's son to Chuck E. Cheese

ROOSEVELT PARK, MI – A second woman has been accused of fraudulently attempting to raise money in Jessica Heeringa's name.

The Roosevelt Park Police Department has forwarded the woman's case to the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office for review to decide whether any criminal charges will be filed, according to Police Chief David Boone.

He said Joanne Vaughan, a 56-year-old Fruitport resident, and the second woman, whose name was not released on Tuesday, May 21, were attempting to raise money to send Heeringa's 3-year-old son to Chuck E. Cheese. Boone said both women have denied the allegations.

Boone said the two are claiming that they weren’t working together, but he said he isn’t sure if that’s true. Both women were standing outside the Wal-Mart on Henry Street in Roosevelt Park collecting money, police said.

Joann Vaughan, who lives in the 6600 block of Hile Road in Fruitport, has been charged with larceny by false pretenses, less than $200. A warrant for her arrest was signed last week, said Muskegon Chief Assistant Prosecutor Timothy Maat.

“She was seeking funds from anyone who would pass by,” Maat said. “She indicated that the money was being raised to support the son. That turned out not to be true at all.”

One month since Heeringa disappearance
Updated: Thursday, May 23 2013, 07:30 PM EDT

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It's been nearly one month since the search for Jessica Heeringa began.

The 25-year-old missing mother is believed to have been abducted from her place of work--the Exxon Mobil gas station in Norton Shores, and police are still looking for clues into her disappearance.

The Chief says the investigation hasn't really changed since day one, as they've uncovered pieces of evidence along the way, but nothing that's really brought them any closer to answers.

But he hopes evidence will come, and says that even though the investigation is slow-going, he plans to bring Jessica home.

"I'm confident we will; it's just, I don't know when, and that's the hard part," said Chief Shaw.

The reason he believes there is someone out there who knows what happened is because there is talk of the case on social media and people who aren't using their real names have information that police haven't released.

Note to those with knowledge of this case they haven't shared with LE:  Keep on posting on social media.  You just can't stand it, you've gotta let folks know you know something we don't. You can share it on FB or twitter or whatever, but you can't share it with LE.  If you were really worried or scared, you would be absolutely quiet.  But you aren't.  Since you don't seem to have a conscience and can't do the right thing, you share a certain amount of guilt.  I hope you reap what you sow.  Even if you didn't have a hand in her disappearance and you saw, heard or know something or even stronly suspect something, then  you have a responsibility.  I hope LE catches up with you and not only gets information to find Jessica, but has enough to prosecute  you too!  JMHO  I can't imagine what it would be like to have a loved one missing and someone out there is posting on FB (or whatever) about it.  The term "lower than dirt" comes to mind.  Again, JMHO Rant over.

The Latest On Jessica Heeringa Investigation
3 hours ago

NORTON SHORES, Mich.– It was 4 weeks ago Friday, Jessica Heeringa went missing. She was working the late shift at the Exxon mobile gas station in Norton Shores when police say she was abducted. Investigators have been working around the clock, pouring over thousands of tips but still no sign of the missing mother.

Norton Shores Police Chief Daniel Shaw says they continue to take it day by day, tip by tip.Shaw says they are just forging ahead and every morning they come in, they rededicate themselves to this case.

Investigators are still focused on that silver minivan and the man in the sketch. The chief says the task force, made up of agencies all across the state is still together and will be next week again.

Shaw says someone knows something that could break the case wide open and that is what is most frustrating, that someone isn’t stepping forward. You can call Silent ******* and leave an anonymous tip at 231-72-CRIME.

Heeringa Search Renewed Over Memorial Day Weekend
5 hours ago

NORTON SHORES, Mich.– It’s been 4 weeks since the 25-year-old mother from Norton Shores went missing. Police say Jessica Heeringa was abducted from the Exxon Mobile Gas Station while working the late shift on April 26th. Since then thousands of tips have poured in but still no break in the case.

Jessica’s family though is hoping the holiday weekend will spark a renewed interest in the investigation. It’s the first time Jessica’s family has been out at the make-shift command center in over a week. Jessica’s Grandma Diane Homrich says “I genuinely feel that they missed us being here.”

They decided Friday would be a perfect opportunity to spread the word. “With the holiday weekend coming up we are hoping that people will stop by and pick up a whole bunch of flyers and if they’re going out-of-town take them with them and pass them out wherever they go. A lot of out of towners, wear your t-shirts and talk to them about it lets keep her face out there and keep things moving.”

Who abducted Michigan mom Jessica Heeringa?
6:20 AM, May 27, 2013

Time line of case

Heeringa vanished the night of April 26 near closing time. She was working alone.

Somehow she was drawn out to the back of the building, where a small spot of her blood was found, Kasher said.

The garbage hadn’t been taken out, the cash drawer was left on the counter, her purse was left behind and nothing in the station had been disturbed, police said.

A fellow Exxon Mobil employee was driving past when she saw a minivan drive behind the station, Kasher said. The woman turned around, drove past the station again and saw a man — who has been described as being about 30 to 40 years old — getting into the van, Kasher said.

Police have said Heeringa’s last sale was made at 10:50 p.m. Less than a half hour later, a customer called 911 to say the station was open, but no one was there, police have said.

Police say they believe Heeringa knows her abductor. Investigators are looking into the possibility that more than one person is involved in her disappearance, Kasher said.

He said the names of three men, who have been considered persons of interest, continue to surface through the course of the investigation. Kasher said the men are customers and acquaintances of Heeringa and some of the information they provided to police didn’t add up.

The blood outside of the station indicates she was injured, but maybe not severely, police said.

Police said they are still operating under the belief that Heeringa is alive.

“We’re still focused on the No. 1 goal that we had from day one,” Shaw said, “and that is to find Jessica.”

Heeringa investigation: One month later
Updated: Monday, 27 May 2013, 6:07 PM EDT
Published : Monday, 27 May 2013, 5:45 PM EDT

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) - More than one month after a Norton Shores mother went missing from her job, her family told 24 Hour News 8 that they never expected the search would last so long.

Monday, police said the body that was found on the east side of the state did not belong to 25-year-old Jessica Heeringa, who was last seen on April 26 at the Exxon Mobile gas station on Sternberg Road in Norton Shores.

But while Heeringa’s family said they were relieved about that news, they said they were still searching for answers about where she is.

Memorial Day marked the one-month anniversary since police upgraded Heeringa’s disappearance from a missing persons case to a criminal investigation, saying that they believed she had been abducted.

Heeringa’s fiancé, Dakota Quail-Dyer, said it had also been long enough that it was time to explain to the couple’s 3-year-old son, Zevyn, that Heeringa was missing. He went to counseling and found an age-appropriate way to explain the situation.

“My son picks me up every day,” Quail-Dyer said. “He knows what's going on now and he keeps telling me, ‘We'll find her.’ That helps a lot. Other than that, I'm really down in the dumps about it.”

Jessica Heeringa investigation a month later: Police re-interviewing people
on May 28, 2013 at 9:07 AM, updated May 28, 2013 at 9:09 AM

“There isn’t anything new (with the case),” said Norton Shores Police Chief Dan Shaw, whose department is leading the investigation. “We are continuing with interviews and re-interviewing some people, some of the first people we talked to, just to make sure we didn’t miss anything.”

Authorities have focused largely on a silver or gray min-van – believed to be a Town & Country, maybe a 2005 – seen leaving the scene around the 11 p.m. time that Heeringa was allegedly abducted. A witness had reported seeing the van in the area, driven by a man that police have described as 30 to 40 years old.

But Shaw said investigators aren’t certain the van is connected. At this point, it’s just a hunch, he said.

“I need to be clear: We don’t know if that van was involved. We really don’t know that,” he said.

Jessica Heeringa abduction case task force whittled down due to lack of new tips
on May 30, 2013 at 9:06 AM, updated May 30, 2013 at 9:20 AM

Norton Shores Police Chief Dan Shaw, whose agencies is heading up the investigation, said the task force now includes only Norton Shores Police Department and Michigan State Police investigators. The Michigan Intelligence Operations Center is also assisting investigators by phone on occasion, he said.

Shaw said “reduction in staffing” was due to a “decrease in the volume of new tips.” Shaw said the task force is still “actively investigating this case” but there are no new developments as of today, May 30.

Jessica Heeringa Update: Body found in lake doesn't match description of missing Mich. mom, police say

(CBS/AP) PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Police officials say a man on a personal watercraft found a body floating in a western Michigan lake Monday, but the body does not match the description of Jessica Heeringa, the 25-year-old woman who disappeared April 26 from her job at a gas station in Norton Shores.

The Holland Sentinel and MLive.com report the body was discovered Monday afternoon on Lake Macatawa in Ottawa County, and the Coast Guard pulled it from the water.

The sheriff's department says an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday in an effort to identify the body.

"Based on the description I got from Ottawa County authorities, I don't believe it's Jessica," Norton Shores Police Chief Dan Shaw said, according to MLive.com

NORTON SHORES, MI – An effort by a Norton Shores woman to tweak a police sketch of the possible alleged abductor of Jessica Heeringa, the Norton Shores gas station clerk who disappeared on April 26, isn't getting support from the missing woman’s fiancé or police heading up the investigation.

Mitchell said she’s raised $450 on the Facebook page to hire a woman in Houston to add color to a black-and-white sketch of a possible suspect released by the Norton Shores Police Department.

In a statement emailed to MLive/Muskegon Chronicle, Norton Shores Police officials said this:
