Tip Leads Police to Man in Heeringa Case; Questioning Underway

NORTON SHORES, Mich. -  FOX 17 News has learned that one of the several persons of interest in the Jessica Heeringa disappearance was being questioned Wednesday night at the Norton Shores Police Department.

FOX 17′s Ann Marie LaFlamme reports the man was named in a tip, then was pulled over while driving and brought into the police department for questioning.

Several people were being looked at after Heeringa went missing Friday night during her shift at the Exxon gas station in Norton Shores.  As FOX 17 first reported during its 6:00pm newscast Wednesday, the owner of the gas station was cleared as one of the persons of interest in the case.  Heeringa’s fiance was also given a polygraph test and is not considered a suspect.

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WZZM) -- A customer at the Exxon gas station says he overheard a man in a van talking to Jessica Heeringa before she was allegedly abducted.

Christian VanAntwerpen was buying gas about three hours before Heeringa was reported missing. He works at a store within sight of the station and told police just as he was leaving Exxon Friday night, a van pulled into the parking lot.

VanAntwerpen says he overheard the man in the van talking lightheartedly with Heeringa about being in the parking lot and not inside the store behind the cash register.

I know everyone wants updates. The most unfortunate situation in this tragedy is the reporters are hearing & getting updates first. Down at the command center, I've seen Shelly Heeringa's heart break each time something is released and she is last to know. Most of you know before the family & volunteers. Shelly has asked Chief Shaw to bring the info to her first. Maybe it's policy or tactical. We just try hard not to impede the investigation, and leave crime fighting to the professionals. Much love.

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) - Norton Shores police continue to question people based upon tips from the public, but have not developed a suspect in the abduction of Jessica Heeringa.

Heeringa, 25, vanished from the Sternberg Road Exxon Mobil where she worked on Friday night. Police believe she was abducted by a person driving a gray or silver minivan  -- possibly a Chrysler Town and Country.

They have continued to receive tips as more surveillance footage of the minivan was released Wednesday afternoon. 

For instance, officers received tips Wednesday about a man who drives a silver van. At about 6 p.m., the man was pulled over and taken in for questioning.

"It is what we have been doing since Saturday," Norton Shores Police Chief Dan Shaw told 24 Hour News 8.

But none of the questioning so far has gotten police any closer to identifying a suspect.

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) - The lack of surveillance cameras at the Norton Shores gas station from which police sa y Jessica Heeringa was abducted has prompted an effort for new legislation.

The lack of cameras at the Sternberg Road Exxon Mobil has slowed the investigation into who took the 25-year-old mother, though the minivan that is investigator's only lead was captured on surveillance cameras from other nearby businesses.

Rep. Collene Lamonte (D-Montague) thinks cameras could have stopped Heeringa's abduction and Wednesday submitted legislation to be drafted to encourage the use of surveillance cameras.
