Search for missing Eden Prairie woman after boyfriend shoots self outside police station

Posted: May 02, 2013 12:51 PM PDT Updated: May 03, 2013 12:57 PM PDT

DEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Investigators continued searching Friday for Mandy Matula, a 24-year-old Eden Prairie, Minn. woman missing since early Thursday. Her estranged boyfriend, 24-year-old David Marshall Roe, of Victoria, Minn., was about to be questioned when police say he shot himself in the city center parking lot.

TIMELINE OF WHAT HAPPENED

Wednesday, May 1, 11:30 p.m.

Mandy Matula and David Roe were last seen leaving Matula's parents' home in Eden Prairie.

Thursday, May 2, 1:30 a.m.

Roe's black Ford Escape SUV was spotted in Miller Park.

Thursday, May 2, 8:30 a.m.

Matula's parents reported her missing when she didn't show up for work at the Eden Prairie Public Works Department. During the course of the missing person investigation, police identified Roe as a person of interest and he agreed to speak with an investigator.

Thursday, May 2, 1:30 p.m.

Roe had come to the police station to cooperate with investigators but instead pulled out a handgun and shot himself in the parking lot before they could question him. He was transported to HCMC, but his condition is currently unknown.

"They do know she was believed to be with him last night and in our attempt to talk to him, obviously, he had agreed to come in and talk to us but ultimately we didn't get that opportunity," Eden Prairie Lt. Bill Wyffels said.

Roe left some kind of note on the car's dashboard, but police said there was "limited writing" and wouldn't elaborate..

No not good at all.  I wasn't even sure if I should post since we probably know the outcome.  Very sad!

Matula’s parents reported her missing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday when she failed to show up for her job as a city maintenance worker, according to the station.

Authorities identified Roe as a person of interest in their investigation, but before they could question him, he shot himself in the head outside Eden Prairie police headquarters Thursday afternoon. Roe was transported to an area hospital where his condition is unknown.

"They do know she was believed to be with him last night and in our attempt to talk to him, obviously, he had agreed to come in and talk to us but ultimately we didn't get that opportunity," Eden Prairie Lt. Bill Wyffels told the station.

Matula’s father, Wayne, told the Star Tribune that his daughter, a stand-out high school softball player, had planned to break off her relationship with Roe.

Investigators are now scouring Miller Park in Eden Prairie where Matula was last seen.

CLUES IN SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS?

Eden Prairie police had very few additional details at a Friday morning news conference. They said officers did not follow Roe into the city center parking lot and said officers have not searched the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.

Police are asking business owners to review surveillance video with the hope of tracing the path of Roe's Ford Escape.

Friday afternoon, police said they are conducting limited searches in specific areas for Mandy Matula, but wouldn't specify where.

Yea, its never a good sign when the Person of Interest in a Missing Person's case tries to commit suicide just before they are about to talk to police in questioning of a missing person who you were the last one to be seen with.

Suspect in Mandy Matula disappearance dies
Article by: JOY POWELL and KELLY SMITH , Star Tribune staff writers

David M. Roe, the man who shot himself in the head outside the Eden Prairie police station Thursday before authorities could question him about Mandy Matula’s disappearance, is dead.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed his death Saturday morning, but released no other details, saying they were still in the process of talking to his family members.

Also Saturday, police cordoned off an area near Miller Park after an unfired piece of ammunition was discovered in the search for Matula. The 24-year woman has been missing since late Wednesday night, when she left her family’s Eden Prairie home with Roe. Family members said she had been trying to break off her relationship with him. Yellow crime scene tape cordoned off the area near Eden Prairie and Scenic Heights roads.

Meantime, Mandy Matula’s brother, Steven, said volunteer searchers were concentrating on the area of Eden Prairie High School, where both Mandy Matula and Roe graduated in 2007.

“It’s the only area we haven’t searched,” he said.

Many had clung to fading hopes that Mandy Matula lay injured somewhere, but her younger brother, conceded that police had told them they were looking for a body

Human remains found near St. Cloud may be missing former UMD softball player

http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/281731/

Quote
The Stearns County Sheriff's Office reported the remains were found by a hiker in a shallow grave in Mississippi River Park.

The Eden Prairie (Minn.) Police Department reported it is "working closely with Stearns County officials and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to determine if the finding is related to the Mandy Matula missing person investigation." However, as of Saturday evening the gender and identity of the remains had not yet been determined.

Matula's father, Wayne Matula, told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that authorities told his son, Steve Matula, that the remains could be linked to Matula's case.

"We're hoping for the best, but praying for closure," Wayne Matula told the Pioneer Press. "It's been a long six months."

Mandy Matula's family believes body found near Sartell is hers

Article by: KELLY SMITH and JIM ANDERSON , Star Tribune staff writers
Updated: October 27, 2013 - 8:30 AM

A hiker found remains in a park near Sartell. ‘Closure is finally coming,’ her brother said.

Human remains found Saturday in a park north of Sartell, Minn., are almost certainly those of Mandy Matula, the 24-year-old Eden Prairie woman who disappeared nearly six months ago, her family said.

Authorities haven’t confirmed the identity or gender of the remains, but they contacted Matula’s family after her ring was recovered at the scene, along with deteriorated remnants of a jacket embroidered with the University of Minnesota Duluth logo, the fast-pitch softball emblem and the number 14 — Matula’s softball number at UMD, where she graduated in 2011.

“We believe it’s Mandy,” Steven Matula, her 22-year-old brother, said from the family’s Eden Prairie home late Saturday. “The closure is finally coming, before winter.”

Her brother said he felt some relief after the countless searches he led, including at Mississippi River County Park, where the remains were found in a shallow grave at 1 p.m. Saturday by a Boy Scout leader hiking alone.

“I’m happy — Mandy is home now,” he said.

The Eden Prairie Police Department was told of the discovery by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and was working with county officials and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to identify the remains. At the park in Rice late Saturday, a sheriff’s deputy blocked the entrance as media congregated nearby. The law enforcement vehicles that came and went included Eden Prairie police cars.

The Matula family hopes to go to the park Sunday. “To actually see where it took place, it will bring closure,” said her father, Wayne Matula. “That’s forever going to be in our hearts.”

The family said an autopsy will be conducted Sunday morning and results are expected Tuesday or Wednesday. They then plan to have a funeral at Grace Church in Eden Prairie.

Making the already heartbreaking discovery all the more difficult, the remains consisted mostly of bones, the family said, as it appears animals had gotten to the body. The clothing was deteriorated except for the logos’ embroidery.

Suspect shot himself

Wayne Matula last saw his daughter leave their Eden Prairie house with her ex-boyfriend, David Roe, late on May 1 without her cellphone or purse. Roe, 24, of Victoria, was the primary person of interest in the case, telling her family she had gotten out of his car at a nearby park. But the next day, he fatally shot himself in the head in the police parking lot when called in for questioning, leaving a Post-it note on his car about a goodbye video he left for his younger brother.

Here's another case of a murdering coward taking the coward's way out again.     It may sound mean, but it's too bad he didn't just off himself and leave Mandy to live her life.  But no-o-o-o-o. He shot himself in the head when called in for questioning, per the previous article.  I'm very sad for Mandy, her family and friends.  If the remains are Mandy's (and they are by appearances) this means she can be laid to rest and they can stop looking for her.  But nothing will bring her back.     Rest in peace, Mandy.

Body of missing Minnesota woman found in shallow grave

Published October 28, 2013

| FoxNews.com

Officials in Minnesota say that remains found in a shallow grave this weekend are those of a 24-year-old woman who had been missing since May.

Eden Prairie police confirmed Sunday that the remains found in a park along the Mississippi River north of Sartell are those of Mandy Matula. A hiker found the remains Saturday. Police said that autopsy results indicated that she died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

Matula's father, Wayne, told KMSP-TV that a University of Minnesota-Duluth pullover with the number 14 was found at the site. Mandy wore that number when she played for the college's softball team before graduating in 2011. Her class ring from Eden Prairie High School was also recovered.

You are correct, he is a coward. It just amazes me that these sick SOB's cannot just move on with their lives. Instead they have to take the attitude if I can't have you no one can. Makes one wonder what he was like when they were dating and why he was an ex.

RIP Mandy
