George Strait Breaks His Own Record With Attendance at Final San Antonio Show
June 3, 2013

George Strait has dethroned himself! The King of Country just wrapped the 2013 leg of his two-year, Cowboy Rides Away final tour, which is expected to close in 2014.

Strait performed his final show of the year on June 1 to a capacity crowd of 73,086 fans at the Alamodome in his hometown of San Antonio, breaking the previous attendance record that he himself set back in 2010.

Upon opening his set, he told the crowd, “I’ve been thinking about this show all month long, and I have to admit, I was a little nervous… but I’m not anymore!” Strait performed for two hours on a rotating stage situated in the center of the venue, to the delight of nearly 75,000 strong.

Congrats to Strait for still being able to pack houses at age 61! The singer celebrated his 61st birthday last month and also enjoyed his 60th No. 1 single with ‘Give It All You Got Tonight.’ 2013 has been a year of breaking records for an artist who has enjoyed one of the most prolific careers in country music. Life really does begin at 60. Or at 61, as in the case of Strait.

BIG WELLS, Texas -- A private funeral is planned for the father of country music star George Strait.
A statement on Strait's website said his 91-year-old father, John Strait, died Tuesday morning after an illness that kept him hospitalized for the past month. A funeral reserved for friends and family is scheduled for Thursday.

Strait was a former junior high school math teacher who also worked a ranch outside the southwest Texas town of Big Wells, about 90 miles southwest of San Antonio.
According to the family statement, Strait worked at the ranch with his family on weekends and in the summers.

The second leg of George Strait‘s farewell The Cowboy Rides Away Tour got off to a huge start on Friday (Sept. 27). The first date to go on sale, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, sold out all 17,178 tickets in nine minutes.

Strait announced his retirement from the road last September at a press conference in Nashville. The legendary singer revealed that he would split his farewell tour into two legs that would begin in 2013 and conclude in 2014.

He hit the road with Martina McBride last year, selling out some of the biggest venues in the country. The entertainer is not retiring from music, however; he still plans to release a new album every year, and recently signed an extension on his deal with MCA.

This year’s tour will features a variety of very special opening acts, including McBride, Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Sheryl Crow, Ronnie Dunn, Vince Gill, Miranda Lambert, and Merle Haggard and Lee Ann Womack.

Tickets for the following dates will go on sale beginning at 10AM in the venue’s respective local time zone on Friday, Oct. 4:

1/17/14 – CenturyLink Center – Omaha, Neb.
1/31/14 - Valley View Casino Center – San Diego, Calif.
2/7/14 - US Airways Center – Phoenix, Ariz.
2/14/14 - The Palace – Auburn Hills, Mich.
2/15/14 - Nationwide Arena – Columbus, Ohio
3/22/14 - Philips Arena – Atlanta, Ga.
4/5/14 – Pepsi Center – Denver, Colo.

Strait Wins Entertainer of the Year at ACM Awards

LAS VEGAS - George Strait won his second entertainer of the year - 25 years after he won his first - and Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban teamed up to earn top honors Sunday night at a jam-packed Academy of Country Music Awards that had a little something for everyone.

Strait's victory was not unexpected. The 61-year-old is a few months from retiring from the road and won the same trophy at the rival Country Music Association Awards five months ago. But the ACMs entertainer award is fan-voted and some wondered if Strait's older fan base might vote.

"I've always said I have the best fans in the world," Strait told the crowd. "I heard this was a fan-voted thing, so I rest my case."

No one will begrudge Strait the win, including co-hosts Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan, who were also nominated in the category with Lambert and Taylor Swift.

"Our hero," Shelton said in a genuine moment. "Our hero won tonight!"

OMgosh!  Average price on secondary market (scalpers) for George Strait tickets at AT & T Stadium is $688.00     I realize he's ending his touring, and I can't blame him.  But he will still be putting out music.       There is no way I would pay that much for a ticket.

George Strait's final concert sets attendance record
June 8, 2014

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Country music king George Strait capped off the last tour of his career with an epic, star-studded final performance at the billion-dollar stadium where the Dallas Cowboys play, dazzling an audience of nearly 105,000 people with duet after duet with some of the biggest names in country music.

The attendance shattered the previous record set by The Rolling Stones at The Louisiana Superdome in 1981. More than 10,000 fans alone took in the three-hour show from the stadium floor.

The show brought an end to Strait's nearly 40 years on the road, starting in 1975 with the Ace in the Hole Band. Many of the 11-piece band's original members played back up Saturday, "the best band anybody could have out here on the road," Strait said.

Born in Poteet and raised in Pearsall, about 60 miles southwest of San Antonio, Strait has more gold and platinum albums than any other music act except The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

And while he's quitting the road, Strait may yet add to his chart-topping total after renewing his deal with MCA Records last year to produce five more albums. He has said he will continue to play the occasional gig.

Strait began this last tour, The Cowboy Rides Away, last year. Each of the 45 stadiums and arenas he's played in 31 states has sold out. He's performed for an estimated 1 million fans.

As he sang the tour's eponymous song at the end of the set, fans waved, cheered and did the two-step. And the cowboy rode away.

The concert was filmed live in Dallas and featured a slew of big name acts who wanted to help Strait say goodbye in style. Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Miranda Lambert and Martina McBride were all there, and all will be seen in the CMT special, which airs on Aug. 29 at 7PM ET.
