Pope Francis answers a new calling: Catholic Church's iPad app

Published May 19, 2013

This apple has nothing to do with Adam.

The Catholic Church unveiled a new iPad application this week, intended to keep the faithful abreast of Vatican comings-and-goings, as well as other news from the church’s missions throughout the world.

Called the MISSIO App, the new software debuted during a ceremony hosted this week by newly-minted Pope Francis in the Vatican’s Clementine Hall, according to the Catholic News Agency, or CNA.

“I push here?” the Pope reportedly asked, when presented with an iPad from Father Andrew Small, U.S. national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies.

“As soon as the Holy Father hit the button, a little notice came across the top …and it said, ‘Pope Francis has unlocked the MISSIO App,’" the Rev. Small told CNA. “He sort of looked a little bit surprised.”

The app is reportedly available in English, Spanish, Italian, German, French, Portuguese, Chinese and Arabic.

New app promotes Catholic social teaching

Washington D.C., Feb 9, 2014 / 06:25 am (CNA/EWTN News).- A new iPhone and iPad application from a Washington, D.C., think tank aims to spread Catholic social teaching through Church documents, news and commentary.

The Ethics and Public Policy Center said its free app is “a great resource for politicians, journalists, teachers, students and anyone who wishes to better understand the Church’s teaching on issues of economics, politics and culture.”

The Catholic Social Teaching App provides a selection of papal encyclicals ranging from Pope Francis’ 2013 “Lumen Fidei” back to Pope Leo XII’s 1891 “Rerum Novarum.” It includes documents from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on bioethics and Catholic political participation, as well as Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation on evangelization, “Evangelii Gaudium.”

The Catholic Social Teaching App is available for download from Apple’s App Store. Its content is also available at the app’s website, http://catholicsocialteaching.eppc.org.

Bolded by me.
Very interesting.  Instead of having big, dusty  (and expensive) tomes for study, one can now use a free app on their devices.  I'm not of the Catholic faith, but I do like to read and learn and an app like this could be used to help better understand the Church's teachings.  I can't say I would always agree with the teachings, but as a person outside the Catholic faith, it could help bridge better understanding of them.

Vatican Museums Launches Fundraising, 'Art Lovers Platform,' App
Vatican City State,  August 17, 2015

The Vatican Museums has launched a fundraising app--said to be an "exciting platform for art lovers"--which can be downloaded for free from the App Store.

In a press release, the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums announced ‘Patrum,’ targeted at patrons and donors and intended to raise needed funds for several major restoration projects. There is a requested minimum donation of $10.

In existence since 1982 when a major exhibition went to the cities of New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums remains dedicated to preserving the collection of art housed in the Vatican Museums. Since it began, interested people helped restore the works from that exhibition and since then, the number of patrons continues to grow.

“Patrum is the first ever cultural institution app bringing together instant chat technology, crowdsource fundraising, and online community building," the release stated, noting the app "is your connection to engaging deeply and instantly with the art in the Vatican Museums, revolutionizing the accessibility and understanding of one of the most famous collections in the world."

Papal prayer intentions: 'Click to Pray' app ready for launch
2016-03-04 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) A revamped “Click to Pray” app is officially launched at the Vatican Friday as an initiative for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The launch also coincides with this year’s 24 Hours for the Lord.

An initiative by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, the “Click to Pray” app allows users to take part in a mobile network of prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father, with reminders at different points of the day to pray for a specific intention.

The application allows users to ask others for prayer, prompts users to pray for others’ intentions and lets users know the monthly prayer intentions of Pope Francis. Each month is identified with a different prayer theme – February intentions were for Creation and the focus for March is the family.

The app was originally launched in November 2014 by the Apostleship of Prayer in Portugal to help young people pray with the Pope. The new version becomes the digital platform for the global network of the Pope's prayer efforts. It is available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Communications Secretariat creates new internet office
2016-04-04 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) The Secretariat for Communications announced an new web initiative on Monday: a dedicated office – DotCatholic – to inform and engage the worldwide virtual community with Catholic doctrine, preaching, and ethos.

Please find Vatican Radio’s English translation of the statement from the Secretariat, below

*****************************************
At the invitation of the Secretariat, of State of the Holy See, the Secretariat for Communications has established a Bureau called “DotCatholic” with the purpose of utilizing a generic Internet domain name (.catholic) of the first level, in order to share the teachings, the message and the values of the Catholic Church with the broader global community in Cyberspace.

An informative article about "dot catholic" domain name from 2012--

http://www.news.va/en/news/vatican-seeks-dot-catholic-domain-name
Vatican seeks 'dot catholic' domain name
2012-06-12 Vatican Radio

Internet evangelisation took another step forward on Wednesday as the Vatican announced it has applied for the top level domain name ‘dot catholic’ in an effort to authenticate all websites using that name. The Catholic Church is among an estimated two thousand applicants to ICANN, the California-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which recently decided to open up to the use of new generic top level domain names, as the letters after the dot are technically known.

The applications may take a year or more to process and discussions are still underway in the Vatican as to exactly which organisations and institutions can use the ‘dot catholic’ name. But for internet users, often overwhelmed by the variety of supposedly Catholic sites in cyberspace, this move will provide a more instantly visible way of validating the authenticity of Catholic material online. So when will this come into effect? How much is it going to cost? And how can you apply to become a ‘dot catholic’ site? Philippa Hitchen put those questions to Mgr Paul Tighe, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, who has been following the Vatican’s application process….

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- In an effort to share its masterpieces with even more people around the world, the Vatican Museums has established a YouTube channel and revamped its website to offer high-resolution images and mobile-friendly information.

The "Musei Vaticani" YouTube channel lists short visual "tours" of some of its collections along with a handful of promotional videos highlighting specially tailored tours and services offered on-site, including signing guides for the deaf or hard-of-hearing.

Its website, museivaticani.va, has been completely revamped to be compatible with all platforms and devices in order to extend its reach to even "remote corners of the earth," said Barbara Jatta, the museums' new director, said at a Vatican news conference Jan. 23.

The site, offered in five languages, features a sleeker design, simpler texts and faster navigation, Jatta said. Links to pages can also be shared via Twitter, Facebook or email.

The website provides information about booking visits and purchasing tickets to the museums, the Vatican Gardens, the "Via Triumphalis" necropolis under the Vatican hill and the pontifical villas at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome.

Peter's Pence on Facebook
2017-05-19 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) The Holy See Press Office has announced that “Peter’s Pence” will now have a Facebook page.

Peter’s Pence is the name given to the financial support offered by the faithful to the Holy Father as a sign of their sharing in the concern of the Successor of Peter for the many different needs of the Universal Church and for the relief of those most in need.

The move to Facebook follows the opening of Twitter and Instagram accounts for Peter’s Pence, which took place earlier this year.

According to a press release from the Vatican, the decision to utilize the largest social network in the world has a double objective: “on the one hand, to create a community open to everyone wherever the use of Facebook is widespread; and, on the other hand, to share and relate the activities of this longstanding Office of Solidarity.”

The Vatican Secretariat for Communication releases a communiqué detailing recent restructuring efforts on social media channels under the recently-presented Vatican News logo.

Vatican Secretariat for Communication:

Vatican News community exceeds 4 million users on social media following recent restructuring of platforms

A community that exceeds 4 million users on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. This is the latest result of the reorganization of the social media channels of the Vatican Secretariat for Communication, unified under the recently presented Vatican News logo.

The launch of a Global Page on Facebook, in particular, brought together over 3 million followers, who can now consult the pages of the six languages currently available (English, Italian, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese).

On Twitter, previous fragmentation has been corrected by rendering all six language accounts @vaticannews immediately recognizable. Added to this is the new @radiovaticanaitalia account which promotes and provides information on the activity of Radio Vaticana Italia, and the unique multilingual Vatican News channel on Instagram. The three social media platforms include the YouTube channel (in 6 languages), which is also under the Vatican News brand and which offers users live and on demand videos of the Pope’s activities.

Vatican News social media is coordinated by the Editorial Department and the Theological-Pastoral Department of the Communication Secretariat. The Pope's social media accounts are entrusted to a team of the Secretariat for Communication working in synergy with the Vatican Secretariat of State. These accounts are: @Pontifex on Twitter (over 44 million followers in 9 languages) and @Franciscus on Instagram (over 5 million followers on the single multilingual channel).
