It was 2AM on Friday, is it possible that he was followed by some one from the location where he bought gas? Did the gas station have security cameras? Its only about 30 miles from Coopersburg to Collegeville.

Has anyone seen a time of both the siting from the Hess surveillance camera in Coopersburg, PA. and the moment when he actually bought gas at the Sunoco station on Route 100 in Breinigsville?

College student reported missing last spotted in Lehigh County: The 21-year-old was en route from University of Rhode Island to his Montgomery County home.

Question: Even if Matthew took the longer route which would have been 287 through Westchester County, NY across the Tappan Zee bridge over the Hudson River. Follow 287 to 78 W to Bethlehem/Allentown. I say this as I have used this way many a time, traveling the more direct way on 95 is a PITA. The quicker you can get out of the greater metropolitan NYC area the better when driving. That being said, he left at 6-6:30 pm from college, if his car was seen in Coopersburg at 2am, that mean that 8 hrs would have gone by. There is no way it should have taken that ling. Did he stop along the way?

Hard to believe there were not gas stations open on rt 78. Why go to Breinigsville?

Police Search For Missing College Student Headed Home To Montgomery County

http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2013/05/19/police-search-for-missing-college-student-headed-home-to-montgomery-county/
Quote
Janet Royer says that’s the last she and her husband Randy heard from Matt. A cell phone tower near Route 78 in Allentown picked up a signal from his phone at 2 a.m. Friday.

The Coopersburg Hess station at 2:08 a.m. on Friday, he’s seen on a video passing by the station,” says Janet.

Randy Royer verified that his son was driving the silver 2008 Chevy Cobalt and it appeared he was the only person inside the car. Matt’s debit card was used at a Sunoco station on Route 100 in Breinigsville, and that’s where the trail runs cold.

Here is the story with the time line. I wonder what time that purchase occurred? Was it before or after the other two times on Rt 78 or Cooperstown Hess?

Student from Montgomery County missing after leaving University of Rhode Island
6:06PM. May 19, 2013

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/local&id=9107929

Quote

He normally takes I-95 to the Tappanzee Bridge, then to I-78 where he takes Route 100.

According to family, at 2:08 a.m. there is clear video of Royer buying water and gas at a Sunoco in Breiningsville. He made the transaction with his debit card.

The video shows Royer in his Chevy Cobalt headed south on Route 100, about 40 miles from his destination.

"We've narrowed it down to 30-40 miles from our house and we can't find him," said Janet.

Royer's parents helped him move out of school a few weeks ago and his car was crammed with belongings including electronics and a laptop.

Note for the timeline...
One article seems to say the 2:08 is driving by the Hess station and the other says its when he was seen making a purchase at the Sunoco. The Philadelphia cbslocal one seems to be a direct quote so maybe this abc local was a misquote?

Matthew Royer, 21, was last seen on a security camera at a gas station on Route 100 at 2:05 a.m. Friday. He had been traveling home from school and had turned in his apartment keys to a realtor before leaving town for the summer.

Royer's parents were out of town for the weekend and rushed home Friday morning when they learned their son had not shown up for work at the Skippack Golf Club.

Over the next day, they traced Matthew's steps: At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, he had texted his mother, Janet Royer, to say he was leaving his Narragansett apartment.

Early Friday morning, a cell tower picked up his cell phone on Route 78 in the Lehigh Valley -- "which would be his route home," Janet Royer said.

Matthew bought gas and a water around 2:05 a.m. at a Sunoco on Route 100, Janet Royer said. A security camera caught him drinking water in the car, then heading south on Route 100.

"If anyone has a camera that shoots Route 29 or Route 100," we would hope they would check their film," Janet Royer said. "He drove over five and a half hours to get lost a half-hour from home."

even stopping and getting gas,he still should have been home by 12am the latest
thats if he did leave at 6:30pm or close too,....6:30 to 2:05 is 7.5 hrs
so 2.5hrs or so are missing in the timeline

New sighting reported of missing student Matthew Royer's car
Updated at 11:44 AM today

Police now say the car, belonging to 21-year-old Matthew Royer, was spotted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17th at Route 501 and Route 422 in Lebanon County, Pa.

His car is described as a silver 2008 Chevy Cobalt with Pennsylvania tags GZR-9059. It also has a scratch on the hood.

That new sighting is about 11 hours after the previous sighting, which was from a surveillance camera at a Sunoco gas station in Breiningsville, Lehigh County, where Royer used his debit card to make a purchase. That was shortly after 2:00 a.m. Friday.

His family is desperately trying to find him.

"We've narrowed it down to 30-40 miles from our house and we can't find him," said his mother, Janet Royer.

She showed Action News a text message Royer sent, saying he overslept and was getting a late start around 6:00 p.m. Thursday. A gas station stop in Rhode Island shows Royer left around 6:30 p.m.

The sighting in Breiningsville was just 35 miles from his parent's home.

A check of Royer's cell phone shows it stopped working around noon on Saturday.

According to Royer's parents, his normal route from the university takes five to six hours. He normally takes I-95 to the Tappan Zee Bridge, then to I-78 where he takes Route 100.

Police: Missing Montco 21-year-old may have gone off on his own

The Pennsylvania State Police suggested Monday that the Montgomery County 21-year-old Matthew R. Royer, who has been missing since leaving Rhode Island Thursday, might have decided on his own to detour from returning home to Skippack Township.

"While it may be a voluntary move on Matthew's part, we are still expending all resources in this investigation to locate Matthew," said Trooper Morgan Crummy, a spokeswoman at the State Police's Skippack station.

Eye Witness  tells police that they saw Royer's car seen at Route 501 and U.S. Route 422 in Myerstown, Lebanon County, Pa.

So far, this is the timeline investigators have been able to sketch together:

Thursday 6:30 p.m. -- Matthew Royer leaves his Rhode Island apt. and heads for home

Friday 1:58 a.m. -- police trace Royer's last cell phone ping -- or signal to a cell tower --  in the Allentown area.

Friday 2:07 a.m. -- Surveillance video of Matthew buying gas and water at a Sunoco along Route 100 in Allentown

Friday 1 p.m. -- Royer's car seen at Route 501 and U.S. Route 422 in Myerstown, Lebanon County, Pa.

That last location is about an hour and 15 minutes from Royer's home.

A witness reportedly spotted Matthew’s silver 2008 Chevy Cobalt at 1 p.m. on Friday in Myerstown, P.A., a town 55 miles away from Collegeville. It is unclear whether Matthew was in the car.

The student’s cellphone stopped working around noon on Saturday, WPVI reports.

Matthew reportedly dropped out of the University of Rhode Island’s pharmacy program last fall. He did not take classes during the spring, but was still a registered student at the school, university spokeswoman Linda Acciardo told Philly.com.

The college junior’s car was likely crammed with expensive belongings, his parents said — like his laptop and other electronics.

The story just does not make sense that he went off on his own. Matthew drove his car 30 miles from his home. If he had left college and drove off in the opposite direction, that would make more sense with the theory of purposely missing. Who drives all the way from Rhode Island to PA, only to not go home? With all of the items in his car that are referenced like laptop and electronic devices, if some one saw this at 2am in the morning ... anything could have happened.

The witness who claims to have seen the car did not say whether he was driving.

It sounds like he may have been on a bit of a downward spiral and perhaps he decided home wasn't the place to be so he took another option at the last minute.  Hopefully, if that's the case, he is just off somewhere trying to get his head clear.

Contrary to media reports, the Pennsylvania State Police say that Matthew Royer, who went missing on his way home from college Thursday, is still missing.

University of Rhode Island Student Matthew Royer, who vanished on his way home from college en route to his Skippack home Thursday, has not been located, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.

Several media outlets have reported that he is no longer missing.

"His current location is not known at this time, the investigation is ongoing and we are following up on leads as they come in," said a Pennsylvania State Police report.  "When new details emerge they will be released in future notifications."
