London Soldier Killed in Broad Daylight
May 23, 2013

WOOLRICH, SOUTH LONDON--- Lee Rigby, 25, known as "Riggers" to his friends, was killed in broad daylight on Wednesday as he walked in Woolwich, South London, near an army barracks.

Two suspects allegedly brutally murdered a young soldier in London Monday with large knives as terrified witnesses looked on. Top British security officials are calling the murder a terrorist attack. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

In a statement, the U.K. Ministry of Defence said Rigby, who served with the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was "a loving father" to his two-year-old son Jack.

"An extremely popular and witty soldier, Drummer Rigby was a larger than life personality within the Corps of Drums and was well known, liked and respected across the Second Fusiliers," the statement said.

"He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. The Regiment's thoughts and prayers are with his family during this extremely difficult time," it added. "Once a Fusilier, always a Fusilier."

Horror as 2 men with machete knifes decapitate soldier on streets of London (Photos)
May 22, 2013

Two men who CNN reported may be linked to Al Qaeda terrorism were shot on the spot by police in Woolrich, London after attacking a soldier and decapitating him with machete-style knives.
The soldier who was just 200 yards away from his Army barracks was wearing a T-shirt that said Help for Heroes.

An eyewitness to the horrific incident told LBC radio as he fought back tears, “They were hacking at this poor guy, literally. They were chopping him, cutting him. These two guys were crazed. They were just animals. They dragged him from the pavement, dumped his body in the middle of the road and left it there.”

Video footage of a black man holding a bloody machete was captured with him shouting.

“Allah Akbar,” the man shouted in Arabic meaning God is great. “We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you.”

British police ponder conspiracy after soldier murder
May 23, 2013
(Reuters) - Police investigating the murder of a soldier hacked to death on a busy London street were looking on Friday into whether the two suspected killers, British men of Nigerian descent, were part of a wider conspiracy.

The two suspects, aged 22 and 28, are under guard in hospitals after being shot and arrested by police following the murder of 25-year-old Afghan war veteran Lee Rigby on Wednesday in broad daylight. They have not yet been charged.

Detectives were also questioning another man and a woman, arrested on Thursday on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, as they tried to determine whether those responsible had links to militants in Britain or overseas.

"This is a large, complex and fast-moving investigation which continues to develop," police said in a statement.

"Many lines of inquiry are being followed by detectives, and the investigation is progressing well."

One of the assailants, filmed justifying the killing as he stood near the body holding a knife and meat cleaver in bloodied hands, was named by acquaintances as 28-year-old Londoner Michael Adebolajo, a British-born convert to Islam.

Little is known so far about the other man.

The two men used a car to run down Drummer Rigby outside Woolwich Barracks in southeast London and then attacked him with a meat cleaver and knives, witnesses said.

The pair told shocked bystanders they acted in revenge for British wars in Muslim countries.

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reason we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day," Adebolajo was filmed saying by an onlooker. "This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

Rigby, who had a two-year-old son, was not in uniform. The bandsman was working locally as an army recruiter.

"All he wanted to do from when he was a little boy was to be in the army," his family said in a statement. "He wanted to live life and enjoy himself."

Michael Adebolajo charged with murder of Drummer Lee Rigby
June 1, 2013

Michael Adebolajo has been charged with the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby, police said this evening.

He is the second man charged with the murder of Drummer Rigby, who was stabbed to death outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich last Wednesday.

Scotland Yard confirmed that 28-year-old Adebolajo, of Romford, Essex, has also been charged with the attempted murder of two police officers and possession of a firearm.

Adebolajo had been under armed guard in hospital since being shot by police in Woolwich, south-east London, last Wednesday.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Fellow suspect Michael Adebowale, 22, appeared before magistrates in Westminster on Thursday charged with murder, and is also next due in court at the Old Bailey on Monday.

Two men, aged 42, held on suspicion of being involved in the supply of guns in connection with the murder have been bailed until later this month.
